Import Russian text into FM 7.1, please advice

Dear professionals
From our Russian agent I received some MS-Word documents in the Russian language.
I wanted to import the Cyrillic text / characters into Framemaker documents to make a structured book.
But copying and pasting makes Frame only show question marks.
Selecting an other font did not show anything else.
What is the simpelest way of making Frame "eat" the Cyrillic MS-Word text and make a proper structured document.
I read already things about "font mappings", but haven't the faintest "clou" about how to do such a thing.
Al this on a Win-XP system and Frame version 7.1p116.
Font Arial CYR and others available in the Paragraph Designer.
Your advice will be appreciated.

You have to transform the text into the Cyrillic codepage. Codepage is a term describing a set of max. 256 characters (encodable with a single byte). With Western Windows we use the codepage 1252, for Cyrillic text codepage 1251 is necessary.
Without rebooting etc. you may want to proceed like this:
* Open the document with Word
* File > Save as Text (there might be two options, we need the option which allows to set the encoding)
* Select "Windows (Russian)" or something with "1251" from the encoding popup menu. If the document contains any characters that do not fit into this encoding, it will tell you.
* Save as txt file.
Now you can import this file into FrameMaker, if asked for an encoding, use Windows — FrameMaker 7.x does not know anything about Cyrillic etc., only when you apply a font like Arial CYR (which is a codepage subset of Arial) the correct glyphs will appear.

Adobe InDesign what version?
Version 3 introduced improved CJK, including inline input. It should work if you do as you would do in any transfer of plain text: copy from your originating application e.g. Apple Pages, clean (scrub, strip) the formatting by copying into a plain text editor and choosing Plain Text e.g. in Apple TextEdit, copy into the formatting application e.g. Adobe InDesign.
I reviewed Adobe InDesign 1.5 and was beta tester for Adobe InDesign 2 and 3.

Importing Value/Text into drop down menu Binding tab

I did this before and I can't for the life of me remember how I did it. I need to be able to replace the text in the Value and Text areas (as shown below) with updated text. I don't think I did it using Data binding. Seems like I was able to use either an .xml or .csv file and copy and paste it and I got the result I needed.
I am splitting the Value among multiple fields. I know this was not entered manually as there are about 5000 entries. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If the Clip board has copied one column(ex: excel sheet) it will copy all the rows as values "Text" of the drop down ONLY.
If the Clip board has copied 2 columns the first column goes in to "Text" and the second column goes into"Value". By default the it will be checked the "Specify item values" check box too.
All you need here is:
1.format text and values in to 2 separate columns to populate the dropdown. (can use excel features to generate the spreadsheet. This step output should be in 2 columns only to go in to text and values of DD).
2. place a dropdown field (no properties changes required on any TAB(ex: binding))
3. copy the 2 columns from the spreadsheet and paste it using the "paste from clipboard" under "Field" tab
4. now check the binding tab, should be there both values and text for all the entries provided by spread sheet.

iTunes sync is one way from iTunes library to an iOS device.
You will need third party software such as TouchCopy to transfer from iOS to your computer.

Import text into a form from a tab delimited file using an action

Good evening.
I am using Adobe Acrobat XI Pro
I have been working all weekend so far on this, and have tried many options.
What I am wanting is to import a line of data from an excel file into a form, save the file with a name drived from the form fields, close the new file, then go back to the original file, import a line of data, and so on and so on.
I had all of this working in livecyle with a tool, but now that we are going to Windows 8 and Microsoft Office 2013, the driver that I need to load the excel file into the form is not available--so now I have to redo the forms in Adobe and import using a tab delimited file.
I would like to do this with an action.
Thus far, I have the following.

To start, I have a folder level script

Yes--there are multiple lines in the data file--it will vary from month to month. It looks like from what you are saying is that I need to do the global variable since it will constantly change, and then increment it as it goes through the text file. When it reaches the end, then it will stop.
I looked at the following links--but this is from Adobe 9 API--I don't know if things have changed with XI--especially since 9 used batch processing and XI has actions.

Cyrillic Characters Import (Russian)

Dear all,
We are Importing Russian Data into Oracle DB through Custom Interface . we wuill get the .txt files from the Third party system and we will load via Custom Interface .
The Customer Names that are laoded in to Oracle DB as in the .txt file but when we Run reports and Export the Data we are seeing the Names of Russians inthis Format ?????? ???????? (R10001).
Example :
Name of the Customer looks in this way in DB tables : ("ОнЛайн Трейд" ООО (R10001) but these characters will display as above.
If i made a select on this Customer name from dual i am seeing this ?????? ???????? (R10001).
Could you please help me with your suggesstions that would be great help.

Do you know the characterset used in the txt file ?
Do you know the characterset used in the database ? (select from v$nls_parameters)
You should set NLS_LANG to a Cryllic characterset when you load the file, when you select, and when you run reports.

Importing Arabic text from an XML file

Importing text from an XML file to appear as text in Flash
works in English, however if the text I want to import is in
Arabic, when I test the movie there is no text at all.
Is there some particular syntax to preface the Arabic text?
I'll want to import text from XML in other languages too.

I'd started developing my prototpe in Macromedia Director 7,
and then Director MX, but I have not found a suitable Arabic font
that I can embed that will allow me to display Arabic fonts in
Adobe Director. I have the Arabic text in a Word document.
I've dicovered that my Flash MX Pro and Dreamweaver both
support Arabic fonts, but I want to import text from an XML file.
I'd prefer using cast libraries and cast members, but I don't
know of an equivalent in Flash to what I'm comfortable with in
Director.

Oh so many questions. You probably aren't going to like the
answers. I have Flash MX04 pro (aka Flash 7) and things made a big
jump between MX (aka 6) and MX04. If you only have MX, there might
not be a way to do this. All my advice is based upon MX04 or
higher.
It is possible to do complex languages in Flash. My
experience is with Hindi and I've helped a few folks here with
Arabic.
You won't be able to use text from Microsoft Word – at
least I don't think so. The XML file will need to be saved in the
UTF-8 format. I think Word uses its own scheme and won't work. But
I'm not a Word expert. Something like Text Edit (Mac) or WordPad
(PC) should be able to save a UTF-8 file.
The next problem is you mention "suitable Arabic font that I
can embed." AFAIK, you can't embed any of the complex scripts in
Flash. You just have to rely on the end user having appropriate
fonts installed and enabled. Most operating systems from 2000 on do
have this – although some folks like to remove them to save
space.
Next issue will be line composing. I've found that when using
anything above the normal Latin range that Flash suddenly forgets
how to make a line fit into a text area. It will just break things
in the middle of words and not even notice the spaces between
words. I've written a little snippet of code that "composes" the
lines. It works well with Hindi and folks here have used it with
Arabic and not come back saying that it doesn't work. Search the
forums (both the Flash and Actionscript) if you can't find it I'll
dig it out when I get home.
So here is the checklist:
Make sure the XML is saved in UTF-8
Import the XML file
In Testing environment go Debug–>List variables.
Does it show up correctly there?
Does it show at all in a text field?
Use the "composer" to make the lines break.

Smartforms with Russian text.

I am attempting to enter Russian text into a Smartform. I have edited the Smartform while being logged into SAP in Russian and English, but any Russian text displayed in the output has hashes (#) displayed instead of the Russian text. I've also entered the text in SE63 as well, again logged in as Russian and English, the results are the same.
Strangely enough the data, like product name, is shown in Russian.
The Smartform itself has the form_attributes->Language_attributes set to 'To selected languages' and with the Russian language being set. I have also tried using 'To all languages' as well, but with no change in effect. The default language of the Smartform though is showing as English, and I don't think that this can be changed, or indeed needs to be changed, and is probably defined when the Smartform is initially created, choosing the current language as the default.
Has anyone encountered this problem before.

I've managed to get Russian text out now using Se63. I don't know whether there's some locking goining on if you have the Smsrtform open in another session becuase I did get some very strange results. Anyway, I now exit Smartforms when using SE63 to enter texts and all seems fine now.
I am very grateful for your replies, however, I really do wish that you guys would read the message properly. Someone said that I should ensure that Russian was installed, when I had previously said that I had already logged in with the Russian language, and someoen else said I should ensure my printer is capable of printing Russian when I had previously said that the data (material description) was appearing in Russian.

Urgent: want function module to translate text into russian language

My requirement is that, field is fetched from std. table. This fiels of data type string, i.e., it contains text. I want to translate this text into russian language before displaying this in output. For otr text, i used se63 to translate. But, this text is not otr, it is dynamically fetched from diff. std. tables. So, se63 is not working here.
Please help me as its very urgent.

I don't know if there's an unique solution, you should try to open an OSS message
All tables with description should have the language (usually field SPRAS) as key fields
so u can try to read a record and create a new one but with the new language:
select * from makt where spras = 'ZH'.
   makt-spras = 'E'.
   makt-maktx = ......
   insert makt.
endselect.
But it's better to analize the risk

Importing a text file into a variable

I have a text file that I would like to import as a variable in javascript. I would like to do some editing to the text in the script before I place it into the page. I have the script splitting text into an array and the different parts need to go to different places... I have everything working for me except for importing the text from a file into a variable (right now I'm defining the variable from within the script).
Any help would be appreciated!

CS3/JS: Code to import x-tagged text into Indesign

Hi All,
Normally we import text as X-Tag using Em Software plugin manually. We developed a script for auto-pagination in Indesign. But we couldn't find any JS code to import X-tagged text anywhere. So we used word file to import but facing lot of issues while importing word file into Indesign.
Is there any javascript code to import text with X-tag plugin? If so, kindly provide. It will be be helpful for us very much.

An external plugin can only (*) be used in Javascript if the original programmers added support for it. Best is to check its documentation, and if it's not mentioned in there, contact the authors.
(*) Perhaps you can locate its menu entries and use those instead. I wouldn't know at all if that works with external plugins.

Is there a way to import text into an inDesign layout randomly from multiple word docs?

i'd like to start out by thanking everyone for the help with the text box or stroke around text/paragraph, the advise has definitely helped.. What i'm wondering now is, is there a way to take multiple docs "wether it be a word doc or an indesign doc" and have them import or insert into our main layout in inDesign randomly or by taking one paragraph from each individual doc 1 after the other till each paragraph is inserted..
To give you an idea:
say i hav 4 text docs each doc is a category so to say, each with anywhere from 25 to 100 paragraphs.. each paragraph is it's own item or description.. each of these descriptions or items so to say needs to be in our layout each week, but randomly.. Currently we are using the cut and paste method to achieve the randomness in our layout.. I'm hoping theres an easier way..
-if this is something inDesign can't do, might there be an alternative.. say an external app. that might achieve this for us?

well.. we've come up with some sort of solution that seams to work well for what we want.. we combined each doc into an excel doc with each paragraph on it's own line.. then added extra columns in excel to input random numbers and letters -that can be changed weekly, so we can use the sort feature in excel to reorder all the paragraphs.. next we copy and paste from excel to inDesign, because importing an excel doc seams to be more agravation than it's worth..
-this seems like it will work well for what we need to do, though curiouse if anyone else might have an alternative solution?

InDesign CS3 Scripting XML Import Multiple Images into same Text Frame

I am having trouble importing multiple images into the same Text Frame using XML import. I imported 5 images into the text frame. However, all 5 images are laying on top of one another. Does anyone know if there is a way to have all images laying out like how Microsoft Word handles inline images, i.e., laying out next image to the right of previsous image in the same line and if there is not enough space left in the line, then wrap to next line. Thanks in advance. I understand I could use JavaScript to do post import processing, e.g, calculate the image size and place each images accordingly. But I am trying to see whether there is a way to do this without scripts.

You can apply an object style to all anchored images by script. A text frame containing main flow should be selected.

However, there is a better approach:
Step 1
Create place holders for a single "Book" element and format it as needed -- apply an object style to the cover.
Step 2
Import the xml file -- the placeholders are replaced with data from the 1st xml element
Step 3
Drag & drop the element containing all "Books" elements into the main flow -- all elements are placed and formatted the same way as in step 1.
Finally, add a new page, click the overset text icon and autoflow text to add pages so that to fit all the text.
