Import video clip from DVD

Can anyone help me learn what I need to import video clips from my family video DVD's? I created the DVD's from tapes through Pinnacle Studio 8 (before becoming a Mac fan).
Thanks for any help you can give me,
Ann

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
My personal choice would be to edit them to a compatible format such as DV, you can do this with mpegstreamclip (free) provided you have the QT mpeg2 playback component installed (think it's $30), there are other third party software solutions, no doubt others will have their favourites.

    Hi
I like to know how to import video clips from a DVD? I tried and i could not figure out.
    thanks

The VOB files must be demuxed.
When they are, there two generation losses involved.
If you edit and reencode to DVD, that's three generation losses.

  • I don't want to import video clips from iPhoto!

iMovie automatically imports video clips from iPhoto, and I don't need or want this to be done. I don't want to delete or move those clips from iPhoto, so is there a way to prevent the automatic transfer?

Go to your Hotmail account on the web (NOT in mail), make a new folder (or folders) for the mail you want to keep and move the messages into it.
Mail (and all other email clients) will download all messages in the inbox unless previously downloaded. That means downloaded with the client you are attaching now.
Until that is done do not setup the account in mail.

  • Importing video clips from iMac

    Hi all,
I've just purchased a new iPhone 4 and can't seem to be able to import video clips from iPhoto onto the phone. Is there a particular format the files need to be or do I need another app or converter?
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott

    Toad, you are incorrect...
However it is a PIA to get it to work.
In very un-Apple-like fashion, it is a several step, unintuitive process that requires another program. Luckily a free program...
    1. Convert your file with Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/) and use the iPad profile. (P.S. My original .mov file needed to be converted to work on iPad. The built-in "Create iPad or Apple TV version" function in iTunes would not work for me. I received a "The video is already in the correct format" message. Annoying...)
    2. Put the converted file into a folder
    3. With your iPad connected to your computer, go to iTunes and select the "Photos" tab on your iPad.
    4. IN the "Sync Photos From:" drop down box choose "Select folder" and select the folder that contains your video.
    5. Check the "Include Videos" check box.
    6. Hit the "Sync" button
    7. Now the video will be available in Keynote. No desktop version required...
    P.S. I am a PC... Not a Mac.

  • Is it possible to export a video clip from DVD player to iMovie '09?

If I load a homemade DVD onto my iMac using Disk Utility and then import either the entire disc or portions of the disc into iMovie, that works just fine. However I noticed that some clips are missing in iMovie, even though they are on the iMac in form of a .dmg file on the desktop. The same file that was used to import in to iMovie. If I look at this file using DVD player, everything is there, but some of these clips are missing in the event window. So I created a video clip in DVD player of those pieces missing in iMovie and now how can I get these into iMovie?

Hey, best way to import video from a DVD video disc for editing is to acctually have a simple video file. Use Handbrake or MPEG StreamClip to read the disc and create a video file off the video stream.
You could also set in and out points anc manually create several clips, which may help with playback and rendering for editing. I don't know how extensive you're going to get in your editing with iMovie...
    Hope that helped.

  • How do I import video clips from iPhoto if it doesn't recognize the video clips in iMoive

I'm trying to make a movie using iMovie and I recorded some clips using a Sony Digital Camera and iMovie won't let me upload the video clips from iPhoto. I try to import them but when i try to click on the file, it won't let me. Like its not bold like other files (It will let me upload video that were taken with my iPhone) I have iMovie 09.
What do I need to do?
    Thanks!
    Ayca

Do you plan to put each video clip in iDVD to be playes separately?  If so then here's how:
1 - open iDVD and select your theme.
2 - click on the Media button at the bottom right and then on the Photo button at the top.
3 - in the search window type in ".mov" (or the extension of the video clips you plan to use).
4 - all of the video clips with the extension you entered will be displayed and you can drag them into the menu area at the left.
Another way would be to put all of the video clips in an Album and click on that album to view and drag the clips:
Remember, the order that they are added to the menu will be the order that the buttons will highlight when you scroll thru the buttons with a DVD player remote.
This will give you a menu with a separate button for each video clip (up to 12 in a menu with some themes).
If you want to play all of the clips one after another you could create a slideshow in iDVD with the "+" button at the bottom and drag the video clips into the slideshow as you would still photos.  Set the slide duration to anything but manual and don't apply any transition.
That will let you play all of the clips sequentially.

  • How to import movie clips from DVD?

    Hi,
A really stupid question, and possibly this has been asked before, but I am at my wits end--is there a way I can import video clips to iMovie from a DVD disc that contains video files? When I try to select 'import movies' from the file menu, it won't import the clips because the video files contained within the dvd are VOB. IFO. and BUP. formats, and the iMovie will only read MPEG or mov. Is there a way I can somehow import these clips by changing the setting somewhere in the iMovie or am I to require some other type of application to convert these files before I can successfully import them?
I'm really only trying to make a simple short clip, nothing big. The longest it will probably be is at most 5 mins. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Is there a way I can somehow import these clips by changing the setting somewhere in the iMovie or am I to require some other type of application to convert these files before I can successfully import them?
Not by changing a setting. Multiplexed MPEG-2 content is not iMovie '08 "edit" compatible. Either the content is recognized as being on a compatible camcorder and converts the content to an "edit" compatible compression format or you must manually convert the multiplexed MPEG-2 content yourself for import at the "Finder" file level.
    Any suggestions?
If your VOB files are not encrypted (i.e., on a homemade DVD), then they can be copied to your hard drive. Once on your hard drive, you can use any of several applications to perform your conversion. Cost and work flow depend on the application you use. I normally recommend a new user try something like iSquint for their initial attempt. It is free and simple to use. Simply drop the copied VOB file containing the video you want to the application work area, set the "Optimize for TV" option, and press the "Start" button. This will produce an MPEG4/AAC file that can be edited. Other applications can produce alternative compression formats for editing but are either more difficult to use or are not totally free. My preference would by MPEG Streamclip here, but it requires a $20 QT MPEG-2 Playback component and s much more difficult to use since it has many more options and capabilities. Visual Hub (iSquint's "big brother") is as simple to use, but is a "pay-ware" application. In any case, the free application should allow you to do what you want and then you can decide if you need/want to invest more in the way of cost, time, and/or effort in a better application.
I use Quicktime pro as well to export any file to a version that iMovie will work with
Unfortunately, QT Pro will not work in this case since QT Pro is not conversion compatible with multiplexed MPEG-2 formats. Even if you add the $20 QT MPEG-2 Playback component, it will only convert the video portion of the file. Use an MPEG-based, third-party application like those mentioned above or FFmpegX (donation-ware/difficult to use) or MPEG2 Works (Pay-ware that also requires the $20 MPEG-2 component, etc.

  • How can I import video clips from my Kodak Z740?

I have done this three times, and now I am unable to. I am losing my mind! I believe that when I did it before, I imported pictures first off the camera into iPhoto, then I pushed the import button again and the movie clips came in, which I then transferred to iMovie. This isn't working now. Help!

Hi Brealyn - welcome to iMovie Discussions!
Can you tell us more about what you are wanting to do?
Are you wanting to use movie clips from your digital still camera to make an iMovie video?
What part of the process is not working now? Are you able to import the still pictures into iPhoto successfully?
Can you also import the movie clips successfully, or is that the problem area?
If you have been able to import them, can you then not get them into iMovie?
Are you saying that you have succeeded three times in getting movie clips like that into iMovie?
Lots of questions!! Just want to clearly establish what you have managed before and what you cannot do now.
The following info comes from the iMovie Help Menu:
MPEG-4 video cameras (which yours is) may not have a FireWire connection, but have a USB connection. To transfer the video from and MPEG-4 device to your computer, connect the device to your computer using a USB cable. Your MPEG-4 camera or device appears as a hard disk on your desktop. You can open the hard disk icon and drag the video footage into your iMovie HD project or to your desktop for importing later.
When importing footage from an MPEG-4 device, your video is imported as a single clip into your project; iMovie HD does not break it up into cllps automatically. You cannot use the capture controls to import your video or control your camera. You cannot use the Make a Magic iMovie feature to import video automatically from an MPEG-4 camera connected by a USB cable.
The Help Menu is really worth looking at.

  • Problem importing video clips from Panasonic SDR-S10

Hi, can anyone help? In iMovie I try to import my video clips from my Panasonic Camcorder SDR-S10 and it shows clips there, but when you click on them the clip icon disappears. Try to import and it doesn't import anything? Any ideas.
Anyone know a workaround for importing clips from this camera I get a lot of problems with a Mac when using this one.
    Thanks
    Hayley

I have the same camcorder and have used Visual Hub to convert the .mod clips to .dv files which work just fine with iMovie. You can try out Visual Hub for clips less than 2 minutes in length in the trial mode. I think it costs about $20. Also, I've heard you can buy an mpeg2 plug in for Quicktime Pro that will let you use those files. I think that is also about $20.
Also, search the apple discussions for ".mod" and you'll find a lot of other similar questions to the one you asked.
    Hope this helps.

How to get video clip from other project?
I have been saving all the clips into one huge project and I think it is time to divide them into different projects.
Also, how do I know if the project would fit into one DVD when I burn it?

    You need iDVD for that.

  • Whats the best way to import video clips from FCP into a personal template

Hey all, I'm doing some tests. I see some color shifting going on when I export out of FCP using QT conversion (same settings as sequence), Importing into Motion, then adding lower third graphics, then exporting out of Motion .... and finally back to FCP. I put the new graphic added layer on top and have the original on bottom. I toggle the monitor on both layers and see a slight saturation drop on the graphic layer. Has anyone noticed that ?
The reason Im doing this is because lets say I have lower thirds that I want to place throughout a hour show. I want to set-up a basic lower third template and just plug in the video clips for the areas that I need those graphics. It would be way to difficult to export out of the timeline in FCP
and rebuild those lower thirds everytime in Motion. Does anyone know of a better way or does everyone have to export out to the desktop and then into Motion every time they want to use a Motion template.
    Thanks to any replies.

Try roundtripping from FCP to Motion and back using Send to Motion. In FCP, Control Click your clip>Send To>Motion Project. The clip will open in Motion with the proper project properties. Make your edits there, press Save, and then render back in FCP. No exporting necessary, although you might see a gamma shift. Much easier.
To do this with an existing Motion template, I'd try copying and pasting in that template's contents once you've sent to Motion from FCP.

  • Premiere 6.02 - can't import video clips from a different editing program

If anyone has an answer I would really appreciate it. I am using Premiere 6.02 and XP. I have a 80 GB hard drive, 256 mb ram, and 1.7ghz. I have about 9 minutes of footage that I captured on MGI's videowave 4, which came bundled with my computer from Dell. It seems that I have to import the entire 9 minute clip from videowave into premiere to be able to edit it with premiere. I have been able to carefully make a few very broad edits of this 9 minutes in my premiere timeline, however, everytime I try to open it up I can't even make a single move before premiere is not responding and it has to close down. Is there anyway around this so I can utilize this 9 minutes by adding audio tracks, fades, and specific cuts? I have to be able to use this footage. Any suggestions would be great. Also, are there any chat rooms that exist where people discuss troubleshooting issues with premiere? Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Thanks for the help. I'm in a bit of a tough situation right now.Again I have xp with 1.7 ghz, 256 mb ram, and 2 hard drives ( 40 gb and 80gb) with approx. 75 gigs free space. I'm trying to save about 12 minutes offootage that i captured with videowave 4 from being totally useless. I know you suggested to me that i convert from avi 1 files (videowave) to avi 2files (the only files premiere 6.0 accept apparently). I haven't been able to find anywhere online that has the software to do that with. My other alternative, considering the original footage on my camera has long since been erased, is to export from videowave to my camera and then import that footage into premiere and then i would be set. I wish I could. I couldn't get videowave to recognize how to "produce video" so I uninstalled and reinstalled. Now I am able to get all the way to the point where I'm simply supposed to choose "output to dv" under the output menu. When I click the dropdown menu the only option available is "full screen", which I tried anyway. It does play the footage on full screen, but it certainly doesn't capture the footage to my camera. I've looked everywhere on the videowave web site and their solutions are brief, difficult to understand, and inconclusive. Oh, something that sounds like a problem is when I reinstalled videowave it said something about missing a indeo codec. I looked for it in my video codec properties and found a couple of versions, but what I gathered from online research was that I might need indeo codec xp 5.2 (seeing as how I'm running xp) which costs $15. I thenlooked onlineto find that codec for free somewhere to no avail. HELP!!!! THANKS!!

  • Transferring a 20 minute video clip from DVD to Mac

    Hi
I would loke to transfer an old 20 minute clip from a DVD to my Mac. How do I do this?

I'm assuming you have an external DVD drive. You can use Handbrake to 'rip' the DVD to your computer, assuming the DVD isn't copy-protected.
