Imported VHS-C Footage Includes Codes

I have a couple of dozen VHS-C tapes that I want to capture in iMovie to create a library for future video projects. No longer having the original camcorder, I bought a JVC camcorder from eBay, ran the S-video and RCA audio to a Sony Digital Hi8 camcorder, and then via firewire to my Macbook Pro to iMovie. The captured footage isn't bad, but JVC's timecodes, playback graphic, and SP or EP indicator are now permanently encoded on the resulting footage. I would expect to see this on the camcorder as I play tapes back, but I wouldn't expect to be recording it as well. Anyone ever have this issue? I have no idea how to eliminate this from the captured tape.
Thanks,
Nick

First, I was able to turn off the display options on the camcorder, so it's no longer a problem. Thanks!
Second, I'm using the passthrough device in both scenarios. When the playback unit is a VCR, iMovie's capture buttons are functional; when the playback unit is the camcorder, they're grayed out. However, with the camcorder display options turned off, iMovie is no longer "recording" but "capturing." While the buttons being grayed out is curious, the output is acceptable. Again, thanks!

  • Importing "Hi 8" footage

I have a Sony Digital 8 camcorder that I've been using with FCE 2.0.3 for a long time now. Not the highest-end product in the world but it works great for my projects.
Today for the first time I tried to use the Digital 8 camcorder to import into FCE footage that was recorded on Hi-8 tapes with a non-digital camcorder. Obviously it didn't work or I wouldn't be here crying about it.
The footage plays fine on the camcorder, and I can even import into iMovie this way, but I can't figure out how to do it with FCE. I can control the camera from FCE's import window, but I can't mark in and out points (presumably because there is no timecode on the tape). I have tried to start the tape playing and then click the Now button, but all I get is a black window that says "waiting for time code".
I have tried using the camcorder's DV pass-through feature, but that didn't make any difference either.
    Can anyone provide suggestions?

This may be a silly question...but if you convert analog "Hi 8" footage using a Digital 8 camera, will this easy setup method (non-controllable DV converter), allow you to use the DV start/stop detect feature?
The help menu describes this DV Start/Stop detect feature. I've never used it, but I have tons of Hi8 footage to transfer and would like to be able to automatically have chapter markers inserted.
Is this possible when converting old tapes using a Digital 8 camera for transferring? Or does it only work with true DV footage.
    Thanks,
    Jenny

  • Capturing VHS-C footage: Will this method work?

Ok, I'm new to the whole Video and Digital manipulation realm, but I wanted to run this by everybody before I tried it out.
    Two questions:
    1. Would this work:
    - Capturing at DVD quality (I mean, it's VHS-C tapes, not exactly IMAX level stuff)
    2. I'm using my S-VHS player and my DV player as a bridge to my computer. Which of these two is better/higher quality (or either I guess):
             a. Plug my s-video into my vcr and dv player, then usb into my computer, then capture that video using the dv camera as a bridge
              OR
              b. S-video into my dv and vcr, capture the footage onto my DV camera, then import that captured footage from the DV camera.

If you are passing the video through your DV camcorder using AV-DV option, the camcorder is converting the AV to DV, the camera would do the same if you were recording that input to tape.  Either way it is DV.  When you capture DV via Firewire, you are capturing a stream of binary data that meets the DV IEEE1394 standard.  It makes no difference if the stream comes from the pass-through, or from recording to tape first and then capturing the tape.  There is no change in quality loss between the methods.  Recognize however, the source was only VHS and the DV copy by either method can't be better than the VHS.
As for USB, I do not believe that Premiere pro can capture a USB input, the Premierr pro miniDV/HDV option is only for IEEE1394 capture.
Your USB connection may be passing through a camera-specific utility and being recorded as a AVI file on your HDD.  You then have to import that file to Premiere using the project panel

  • Importing VHS tapes w/ADVC-300 help

Please help, I'm converting a large number of VHS tapes to DVD using a ADVC-300 Analog to Digital Converter and a Sony VCR. Everything imports fine but everytime the signal hits a break in the tape (the old VHS snowstorm) iMovie stops importing. Since most of these tapes were made by my mother in law, nearly every couple minutes there is a break in the tape and I have to constantly hit import to begin again after a break.
While I enjoy being glued to 45 VHS tapes of my wive's childhood, I rather set it and forget it! It might be a function of the ADVC-300 but I was hoping there is a way to configure iMovie to import till disk full or stopped regardless of the signal coming in.
    Thanks!

    Hi Tom
I have an ADVC 100. I've imported VHS video through a panisonic VCR snow and all with no problems into imovie 5. The problem could be with the VCR or the ADVC 300.
A possible work around could be to set the VCR to play the video through to a mini DV tape camcorder. It should record one continueous video on a single time code. Then you should be able to import directly to iMovie -- snow and all!
It's an extra step, but you don't have to baby sit the VCR.
    Good luck

  • Importance of language in include command

    Hi All,
wat is the importance of language in INCLUDE command? in sapscript
i mean wat happens if we ignore/omit language in INCLUDE command?
for example i have 3 item texts
    z003 - FR
    z007 - IT
    z008 - BE
these languages may be changed by the user to any language as per his choice,,,,so we cannot pass hard-code values for lanague in INCLUDE statement..
    Thanks
    John

    John,
Adding to the points mentioned by our frnds above, if you really want the form output to be displayed in different languages, its SE63 T-code which helps in translation.
You can create the standard texts in SO10 with teh same name but in different languages. In translation, in the appropriate version you can call the text in the desired language.
IT works as you require. Try it out and get back for any other issues.

  • Import problems - Analog footage

    This is my set-up>
VHS tape > linked to DV camera.
Dv Camera in (A/V - DV mode)
There is a blank tape in Camera.
DV Camera >via Firewire to G5.
Press play on VHS Recorder, footage plays on TV and in Camera viewfinder.
iMovie says Camera connected, but there is no picture in the window.
When i press import, a picture clip appears in the timeline, but duration of only 0:00:00. The picture also disappears from the DV camera viewfinder.
I would assume that the footage would import until I press the stop button on either the VHS or in i Movie. What am I doing wrong?

Ok, now plugged into AC power.
Switch camera off and on. iMovie reads Camera Connected.
Press play on VHS - picture on TV and DV Camera viewfinder.
    Press import in iMovie>
    screen reads "camera playing"
    press import again
footage appears in iMovie for approx 1 sec then returns to blue screen "camera connected. if i press import again as soon as footage appears, it DOES capture for upto 4 secs, but the quality is very poor.
    Possible reasons >
The VHS TV combo is too old.
The footage is so poor when transferred, it aborts the capture.
DV Camera is not compatible with iMovie HD
I should give up and pay to have it done professionally. This is a pain in the a*.

  • Importing VHS tape into iMovie.

I am importing VHS tapes into either imovie 09 or 06. When I play back in the program, it has good quality. But when I save it, no matter what format: mp4, .avi, .mov, etc. The quality is very poor when played back on DVD player.
Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

I am importing VHS tapes into either imovie 09 or 06.
Use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09.
iMovie 09 and 11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
Your workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, so iMovie 06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 09, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 is a "lossless" combination.

  • Importing Canon 5D footage: No video input available

System: MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard), Production Premium CS5
When I import or open footage from my Canon 5D (1080 25p) within OnLocation CS5 I get the message "No video input available" below the clip monitor. However, the audio plays. Footage that I take with a Sony EX3 (1080 25p) plays correctly.
    Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Andreas

    Hi Mark,
    Thanks for your answer.
Being able to add and merge metadata with 5D/7D clips is exactly how I use OnLocation; not for live recording or live logging. I typically have assignments where I shoot about 200-400 clips in a day or two, covering an event from multiple angles and in various shot sizes. I exclusively work with DSLRs and have no immediate plans to switch to other formats. I chose CS5 because of native DSLR workflow support without the need for transcoding. So you would expect all parts of the suite to embrace it, including OL. Initially, it appeared to be that way, but now you call video playback of DSLR footage inside OL "a bug"!?
With the original installment of OL 5.0 I could quickly review a clip and start adding metadata to the clips (for easy reference) and then import them in PPro using the media browser (PPro does have a tendency to have incredible long save times/crashes when you keep the media browser open). After importing, by dragging the Description field right next to the name of the clip in the project panel, I can easily find the material I need for editing purposes (although a search box would help).
I guess now with 5.0.1 I have to have both Bridge (or some other video player) open to be able to view the files and then add metadata to the corresponding clip in OnLocation. Where else could I add meaning to my footage?
Just how strange is that!? Luckily Windows 7 now offers a side-by-side sticky viewing option, but surely there must be a way for OnLocation to do video playback natively...  Come on, it's just a video player, right? If Bridge and PPro and most other parts of the CS5 suite can play this footage back (you can even do matte painting inside Photoshop, right?), then why can't OnLocation? Why is it so difficult to "support" playback of these H.264 files?
The only thing I can imagine is that it may be a technical challenge to read out vectorscope info from compressed footage. So for now (CS5), you could grey out the ability to set in and outpoints inside OnLocation (rough cutting), and disable read-out of all the vectorscopes for DSLR footage... and then provide full native DSLR support in CS6. I just need video and audio playback, to be able to add metadata efficiently and keep my workflow going.
For a DSLR workflow, OnLocation can be a VERY valuable relational database tool that reads and adds metadata from/to associated footage files and creates an XML project-reference file which can then be imported in PPro. IF it works, of course...
I am more than happy to beta-test this for you guys and provide feedback.
    Richard

  • Need desperate help on importing Sony SR11 footage

I am having a real problem importing ALL SR11 footage into my new iMac. I have a lot of footage on my Sony. First I connect it to my iMac via USB, turn on the Sony, select USB Connect, it connects and iPhoto opens, not iMovie9 so I manually close iPhoto and open iMovie. Previously iMovie did open and showed some of the movie clips but not the recent video I just shot. I checked the Sony and the 48 clips I need are there and they play perfectly in the camera. The "NO NAME" icon is on the desktop and if I open it, there are 44GB of 60GB on the drive. There are several folders and a list of 287 MTS files in the STREAM folder which I guess are the video files.
I tried the archive and the files are on my Desktop now. And of course the same thing happens here too.
What am I doing wrong? And I also tried a new USB cable.
    Andy

I called Apple Support and they sent me some important information. You can not mix the formats to import into iMovie. I continually saw the SD footage but not the HD or AVCHD files. It was suggested that I remove the footage and format the HD in the camera. Sooooooo what about the footage on the camera which could not be replaced.
    Thank goodness for PCs.
I had an old version of the Sony PMB program on my HP laptop which is very slow. This program allows you to import both HD and SD files so I connected the SR11 to the PC and imported both formats into the PC in separate folders on the Desktop for easy locating. All appeared OK in the PC so I then formatted the SR11 erasing everything including stills (very important) on the card and HD and checked the camera to be sure it was clean. I then exported the HD files back into the camera and then checked to be sure all was there and then disconnected the USB cable from the PC. This took forever because I had 40+ Gigs of data on the camera which had to go both ways, import and export.
I forgot to turn iMovie off on the iMac but as soon as I plugged the camera USB cable into the iMac the import window popped open and walla, all the HD footage was there so I spent the rest of the evening importing it into the iMac as MOV files. The SD footage was already in the iMac because iMovie saw it initially when I tried to import everything. The still files were copied to the iMac via the network.
I will say that this was the first time the iMovie Import window had ever opened on its own. Just like the instructions say.
I reformatted the SR11's HD and I am now ready to start afresh.
KEEP THAT PC in the closet you just never know when it might come in handy!

  • I have been trying to import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  Did not have trouble until I upgraded to mavericks.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, iMovie 10.0.2.  Says it is recording, but when I go to check, it says the file is empty.

I have been trying import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  I have been successful doing this in the past, but now it is not working.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, (mavericks), iMovie 10.0.2.  Everything in iMovie looks like it is working.  It reads "recording" in the upper left hand corner of the pane while the video is playing.  When I stop the process to check on my clip it says that the file is empty.  The only thing that has changed since I did it successfully is that I upgraded to mavericks from whatever I had previously.  My system is about one year old.  Any suggestions?

    Hey, Clinton,
Thanks for your help!  I was able to go to iMovie 9.0.9 and import video.  I was still curious as to why it didn't work in version 10.0.2, so I contacted Apple tech support.  They were't sure at first as to why it wouldn't work, so they had me delete iMovie 10.0.2 and then re-install it just to see if something had gone wrong when it upgraded.  That didn't change anything.  In the end, they determined that 10.0.2 doesn't support the Hollywood Dazzle DV bridge.  But I have a workaround path from them that I will share so that it's possible to import to 9.0.9, then move it to 10.0.2.
         1.  Open iMovie 9 (finder/applications/iMovie 9.0.9
         2.  Import from Dazzle Bridge to iMovie 9, note which event you are importing the clips into
         3.  Close iMovie 9
         4.  Open iMovie 10 (probably in the dock)
         5.  File/Import Media...navigate to home(this was my name, on the left side of iMovie, under Favorites)/Movies/iMovie events.  Find the event folder that contains your Dazzle clips (tip-try sorting by date modified to look at recent events.)
         6.  Select the clips and import.  Click the blue "Import Selected" button on the bottom right.
You may get a message that some files cannot be imported.  Click continue import.  It's a little glitchy.  It imports your clip, and also makes a copy of it, too.  On the copy, the audio is normal, but the video is choppy.  In any case, you would delete the copy, anyway.
Hope this additional information helps somebody else.  Thanks again, Clinton for helping me!

  • Importing VHS into iMovie - Communication Error

    Hi
I have just got a new iMac with iLife 08.
I am trying to import VHS tapes through a Canon camcorder into iMovie. I have done this many times before using Final Cut Pro on my old computer. My old FCP isn't compatible with OSX 10.5 so I have to use iMovie for the first time.
My problem is when I connect everything up, I get a 'communication error'. I can play the VHS and see it playing on the camcorder but it won't play on the import window in iMovie. i have tried importing it anyway and it does capture a couple of seconds and then stops.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

I have the same problem, used the info from the above link....
Live import workaround #2: Put a tape in the camcorder and put it into CAMERA mode. Launch iMovie HD 6.0.2 -- its import mode should show the live feed from the camcorder. Remove the tape -- iMovie HD should continue to show and import live feed from the camcorder. The drawback with this approach is that it produces wear and tear to the camcorder. If you keep the tape in the camcorder, it may also go into standby mode if the tape is paused.....
But then switch from camera to play (VCR) on my canon MV500i
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

  • Importing VHS into iMovie

I just bought and hooked up a Canopus ADVC-110 between a TV/VCR combo and my computer. Several questions:
    1. When I first hooked up the canopus, the iMovie project I had been working on began displaying this message when I would open the project: " The camera you have connected is a different video standard from your project. You can edit but you will not be able to capture any new clips or export to camera". It didn't seem to affect importing digital video clips or still photos, so I just continued without worry.
    2. Now that I am TRYING to import VHS tape, when I am in my current project, nothing happens with I click the camera button and turn on my TV/VCR combo. I didn't know WHAT was wrong....until....
    3. I opened a new blank project. Suddenly, I could import video just fine. So I thought I'd try editing the clip in the blank project and then just copying it into my current project. When I tried that I got the following message: The DV file Clip is the wrong video standard and cannot be imported into this project. What is going on!?!?
    4. Lastly, I just noticed that at the top of my iMovie project it says the title and then says (PAL). Is that normal? Is that going to burn to a DVD okay? I thought North America had to be NTSC instead of PAL.
    thanks for any suggestions/advice!

I think there are small switches (DIP-switches) on the Canopus. Make sure the switches are set to NTSC.

  • Importing VHS video through digital camera

I am importing VHS video through my Sony camera (TRV22) to imovie.  For some reason it the screen will go blue for a few seconds then the picture will come back.  I was doing this on a older power pc mac and imovie would just stop recording.  On my new imac it doesn't stop recording but the screen goes blue.    Has this happened to anyone else and maybe know what is causing it?  Should I try a different way of video transfer with some other software?  Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Two possible causes:
    Faulty or badly connected cables
    You are not using Firewire

  • Audio from imported mini dv footage seems to work in iMovie, but not in Quicktime or Toast

I'm importing some old footage from mini dv tapes using iMovie 10. When I play back the footage using iMovie it plays back with audio. When I go into the library and look at the .mov files, they don't play back with audio in Quicktime.
    I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4 and iMovie 10.0.4.
I tried it in Final Cut X 10.1.2 too.
They'll play back fine in VLC.
But when I go to burn them to a DVD, the audio magically goes away again.
    Any ideas??

    Hi
How do You go from iMovie'13 (v.10) to
    - QuickTime
    - iDVD
    I would:
    - Share as file and as 480p (NO OTHER)
    - This file should both play and import OK in QT and in iDVD
How was it recorded in Your Camera ?
    - SP-mode 16-bit audio - or -
    - SP-mode 12-bit audio - or -
    - LP-mode 12-bit audio (90 minutes onto a 60 minutes tape)
To work OK with iMovie - audio must be in 16-bit mode
If tape is recorded in LP-mode - Then You need to use exactly the same Camera when making the Import to iMovie - not even same brand and type no: will work securely. Tolerances are too narrow.
(There are works around - but to do that I use analog-out and an A/D-box with TimeBase correction - to get the best SP 16-bit version to work with)
