Importing DNG files edited in Bridge

Thousands of DNG photo's were edited in Bridge, Now I want to put all those files into Aperture but Aperture doesn't regognise the sidecar settings made in Bridge. So, when I want to use Aperture I have to edit all those files again.
Do I do something wrong, or is there a way that Aperture will regognize the Bridge settings embedded in the DNG files?

I'm pretty sure you will need to save the DNGs as flattened images, perhaps as TIFF or straight PSD.
Our company will not adopt DNG for many reasons but mostly because it's just another non-universal format. We maintain our raw images on a separate Macintosh system so we can always go back to the source files but we upload TIFF or PSD to our coworkers, the Photoshop and CS2 geeks. They do not understand raw at all.
Support for DNG, despite Adobe's attempts, is spotty throughout the photo industry. It may catch on but it's not the same incentive for camera mfrs as, say, PDF is in the print and document distribution industries. If you dive deeply into DNG Evangelism, you will see complete support for DNG exists only in Adobe products.
Sorry for the off-topic rant, hope you get better advice as the days pass.

  • Import DNG files processed in Bridge CS3

I have imported 500 DNG files that have had some adjustments made to them in Adobe Bridge CS3. Aperture 2 does not seem to recognise the RAW adjustments that have been made in Bridge. I copied some of the DNG files to a DVD and then opened the DVD on another computer that has Bridge and the adjustments stick with the DNG file. How can you import DNG files into Aperture 2 that have been processed in Bridge without having to make the adjustments again?

You can't. The raw conversion made by ACR can not be read by Aperture and vice versa. The only reason you can read the settings in the DNG- file on another computer with ACR is that the sidecar file is embedded in the DNG. If you had not converted to DNG, then you had to export the XML- sidecar file as well if you wanted ACR on the other computer read the settings made to the raw file.

  • How can I import DNG files into iPhoto 8?

Shooting with a Canon Rebel XT, I've downloaded RAW files onto my hard drive, edited them in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and saved them as digital negatives (DNG) with the .dng extension. Bridge and iPhoto work with these just fine, but iPhoto doesn't seem to want to import them.
Aside from saving them as jpegs or TIFFs, is there any way to get these files to play nice with iPhoto 8?

I'm having the same problem with iPhoto after editing my images in Bridge and converting the files to DNG before importing to iPhoto. The metadata on the DNG file will not show up in iPhoto when I import DNG files. Yet, if I convert the DNG files to JPEG and import the JPEG files into iPhoto all the metadata and keywords in the original DNG files is imported. I use Bridge and CS3 for editing but want to use iPhoto for asset management.

  • Aperture won't import DNG files: Panasonic Lumix FZ28

Well, i went to a seminar on aperture and got all excited to use it, downloaded the trial and discovered that it won't import my camera's RAW files (even though it came out 2 years ago and is supported in PhotoShop)
I've tried various way of creating DNG files with DNG Converter (the one that works with PS CS3) but Aperture doesn't recognize those, either. (linear, non linear etc) (Will the CS4 converter do the job?)
Is there anything else I should be trying? Have any of you had success with the same camera and what do you do?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
    Elizabeth

Yep, that's what I discovered and it's the whole problem with the RAW files, but what about DNG?
I thought converting to DNG might allow them to be accessed: so you're telling me that I'm out of luck and have to stick with PhotoShop?
That dng is not a universal format recognized by Aperture?
    I appreciate your input

  • Preview new DNG files in CS3 Bridge

    Hi All,
I have Bridge CS3.  It previews existing DNG files just fine, but when I drop new DNG files in the folder - while bridge is running - they show up as just icons - no preview.  I have to wipe the cache and restart bridge in order to see the pictures.
It'd be useful to just drop the files in a folder, and they would be immediately availble for preview in bridge.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks

    thanks for the quick reply.
Click on another folder, and then back - no change.
Purge cache - Tools->Cache->Purcge Cache for folder "test"
Local folder on C drive hard disk.
    Press f5/refresh - no change.
    JPG files work file
Same thing happens with PSD files, but purging the cache works.
Only thing that works is for me to purge the cache and restart bridge.
My Camera can only output DNG or PEF raw files.  Bridge does not even recognize PEF files.

  • No preview when I import DNG files from Leica M9

    Hello,
A stange thing...when I import DNG from my Leica M9 direct from the APN card into Aperture I have no preview of the files I want to import...only the generic icon DNG.
If I import on a folder on the desktop and after I import in Aperture no problem.
Do you have the same problem ?
Thanks a lot for your help.

WAV files in iTunes don't have ID3 tags like you want.
    Here's a wiki on it
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ID3
Short answer, I don't think you can do this with iTunes.
You can suggest it through the feedback links.

  • Cant import .dng files

When I direct aperture to a folder on my hard drive, where I have imported some .fff and .dng files the files are unseen, even tho you can see them in the finder, just not in the import window in aperture???

In your reply  you wrote that you has it set to JPG. You didn't say you had tried both nor did you tell us how experienced you are.
Here's a screen shot showing that if the the RAW+JPG type is set to RAW or Both DNG's are see in the import window.

  • Importing DNG files to Aperture 2.1.4

    Hi,
I am very new to RAW image files and using aperture. I want to be able to take RAW image pictures and make use of them on aperture and so I have added CHDK on my canon ixus70. I know this topic has come up before but I can't seem to add to those.
Problem I am having is that once the pictures have been taken Aperture doesn't seem to support them. I have tried to convert the .CRW files using dng4ps2 which creates .DNG files (these were blank black files in aperture) and then converted those using adobe dng converter (these imported, but then said that they are unsupported by aperture).
I want to use Aperture as it has been the most recommended photography software, unless experts here can state otherwise.
Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.
    S

I had a similar problem with my Canon SD1100 IS. I was converting the .CRW file to .DNG using DNG4PS2, compiled on Snow Leopard, then converting to Adobe DNG with Adobe's DNG converter. By generating the .DNG file right on the camera, as described here:
    http://www.flickr.com/groups/canonpowershots5is/discuss/72157610078065768
I was able to use the newest version of Adobe's DNG converter on the camera's DNG files and then import into Aperture. An older version of the DNG converter did not work. You will need to run a program on windows to generate a badpixel file per the instructions. Hopefully this works for you.

  • Leica M9 and Aperture3 not showing camera aperture setting when import DNG files.  Shutter speed and ISO are indicated, but not aperture.  When I export and open in Adobe Camera Raw aperture setting is displayed.

Does any one have a suggestion as to how to get A3 to show the camera aperture setting on Leica M9 DNG files?

You will want to read this thread in its entirety.
The short story (as I understand it) is that the M9 body receives no information about aperture from attached lenses.  It is able to derive an estimate of the aperture, though, and it lists this derived number in the metadata field "Approximate F-stop" (not the exact field name).  Aperture (the program) does not report the contents of this proprietary field.

  • Cannot import dng files. why?

I've downloaded a collection of terxtures in .dng format which is not seen by LR. any idea why?

Normally, dng files come from a camera or a utility designed to produce DNG files from camera RAW originals.
I am not aware of texture files coming in dng format. Are you sure they are dng? Could they possibly be png?
png files are not supported by Lightroom.

  • Aperture won't import DNG files with my adjustments from LR

When I export my images from LR2 as DNG and import them into Aperture3, although they look fine in the import window, when I view them in projects they have lost all the modifications I put into them.
I then tried to import them as TIFF 16 which worked but the image size quadrupled and I'm loath to use TIFF 8 due to the loss of information.
Am I doing something wrong? I thought DNG was a universal format so why can't Aperture recognise the adjustments and modifications?

Edits in LR do not modify the DNG/raw other than embedding metadata that "calls out" editing instructions that would, in any case, be unique to Lightroom. As someone else noted, their may be no equivalent in Aperture for a particular LR edit. DNG may be a universal format but the metadata that's written to a DNG could be proprietary.
I'm afraid the only way to retain your LR edits in Aperture will be to export the data in a format that actually renders your edits to the image. If file size is a concern, I would suggest either 16bit Photoshop "PSD" or 16bit compressed TIFF. I would also suggest using AdobeRGB as your export profile/working space as I believe this is the internal color space of Aperture...I would assume Aperture is intelligent enough to honor tagged/embedded profiles but....on the other hand...I wouldn't assume!

  • Importing QT files edited on FCP - HDV to FCPX?

    Hi,
I am editing HDV clips on FCP. I then want to create QT clips that I want to import to my laptop which has FCP X.
The FCP X says it cannot read the files... please, when I create the QT sequences in FCP what is the compression I should use, or how do I make the clips compatible?
    thank you...
    T in sydney

    Hi Karsten,
I think the prores422 worked perfectly for some material but for some images I shot at night It seemed the original material was in better quality.
I am working in two computers.
so I imported sequences shot originally in HD1080i and imported them via the 'fcp7 to x' application. It seems to be in best quality possible.
the question is...When creating the sequence in fcpx should I maintain the 25i or put it 25p?
THank you for your feedback and time!
    Best,
    T

  • Imported Dng files are double size of raw

Is this correct? If not, how to import a smaller lossless file?

You probably have embedding of original raw turned on. You don't need to do that in general. Go into your preferences and the FIle Handling tab and turn off "embed original raw file". In general dngs are smaller than raw files.

  • Importing RAW files with keywords from Bridge

    Hi everyone,
I downloaded the trial version of Aperture and have now imported RAW files (Canon 20D) with keywords and IPTC data applied via Bridge.
The import of the RAW files was no problem however the files lacked the keywords and IPTC data, which I applied in Bridge.
I also tried to import JEPG files and here Aperture could show me keywords and IPTC data.
Why does this not work for RAW files? What do I have to do in order to get it to work?
Thanks in advance for your advise
    /David

When you add metadata (keywords etc.) to most proprietary raw formats (including Canon .CR2 files), Bridge doesn’t know how to embed that data in to the file—Canon and other manufacturers haven’t told Adobe (or anyone else) what the structure of these raw files is and how metadata can be stored within the file itself. Therefore, Bridge creates a ‘sidecar’ file to go with the raw file: the sidecar file sits alongside the raw file, with the same filename and a .xmp extension. This sidecar file contains any metadata you may have applied, as well as adjustments you have made in Adobe Camera Raw.
Unfortunately, Aperture doesn’t read these sidecar files when importing raw files, so you lose any adjustments from ACR (not surprising, since Aperture is obviously a different raw converter to ACR so the adjustments would be different anwyay), but also you lose any metadata you may carefully have applied.
There may be an answer, however. But it’ll cost. That would be to use iView Media Pro (which has recently been bought by Microsoft, but a Mac version still exists). There is a 21-day free trial for iVMP—since my suggestion is to use it as a temporary conduit for importing all your existing raw files into Aperture, you won’t necessarily have to pay the £129 GBP asking price for iVMP (others can debate the morality of that statement, however; fortunately I already owned iVMP and so didn’t have to worry about such things). I believe iVMP can read the XMP sidecar files created by Bridge. Create a new iVMP catalogue with all your raw files which you want to move into Aperture. It should bring all your existing metadata into the iVMP catalogue as well.
Then, import all the raw files into Aperture. As you have found, they’ll be without any metadata. As long as the filenames are the same in both the iVMP catalogue and the Aperture library, you can use Adam Tow’s application Annoture to transfer metadata from the iVMP catalogue into the Aperture library.
Sort of circuitous, but possible. If only Aperture read the metadata from those sidecar files, eh? If I’m wrong in thinking that iVMP imports the XMP metadata, then what you can do is get Bridge to convert all your .CR2 raw files into .DNG files. If you don’t know about DNG, read about it at Adobe. But briefly, Bridge is able to embed its metadata into the DNG files and iVMP is able to read that embedded metadata when importing DNG files into the catalogue. I know that for certain: I used iVMP and DNG files (from my own 20D) before using Aperture; when I started using Aperture (which I love, now) I used Annoture to transfer all my metadata from iVMP into Aperture.
Perhaps someone else will explain this better than I.

  • DNG files wont import

I've been shooting with Hasselblad for a few years, the workflow is as follows.
Import 3fr direct into Lightroom or when shooting tethered direct into Phocus I export a dng from Phocus and import the dng into Lightroom.
Sometime ago (over a year ago) I was having the same problem, today it reared its sweet face again......  .
When I try and import dng files into lightroom I can seethe thumbnails in the import screen. When I try and import nothing hapens and I have to resatrt lightroom.
    I've tried the following.
    Import at the same location
Import and copy to a new location
    Import and rename the files.
I’ve created a new set of DNG files from bridge and tried to import them.
I just downloaded 3.5rc , the problem remains.
Really need to get the files imported and on with work.
Thanks in advance  for a speedy answer.

    Patrick

    Found a solution.
I have just run "Clean my Mac", things seem to be working again. It appears to have been someething perhaps in the Cache.
    It is now importiing though.
