Importing from DVD into FCP

I need to edit using material on a dvd in VIDEO_TS format. Is there someway to import it directly from Final Cut Pro or do I use Compressor or MPEG Streamclip or something else? Can you spell out for me what I need to do as I'm not a techie.
Also I have 2x DVD-R 's which when I put into my computer's DVD tray it reads as empty discs, yet they both play fine on my TV's DVD player. What's the solution.

Be careful,  FCP is an open system which is great, but it allows you to work with formats that are not completely compatible with fcp and can cause serious problems down the road.  You can check the formats of all audio files brought into fcp by selecting them in the browser and hitting command-9,  Use compressor to convert all audio files to 48k 16 bit aiffs before importing to fcp.  There's a preset for this format in the apple presets.  You mention video files.  The same thing holds.  In particular, avoid bringing in h264 quicktime movies.  Convert to an fcp friendly format like prores using compressor.

  • Import Clips From DVD into FCP

I am working on a 50th anniversary project for a client. They want to include several "home movie" clips in the project. They provided the home video footage to me on DVD. I am looking for the best way to import the material on the DVD into FCP.
I have used Handbrake to capture the video from the DVD and the file is saved in an MP4 format. But when I try to import that file into my FCP bin, FCP tells me that it does not recognize the file format.
I think that I can connect a DVD player to my system by running the signal from the DVD player into my DV cam, and then into my MAC, so that is a possibility.
I am just wondering if I am overlooking something that is quicker or easier.
Again my goal is to import material from a DVD into FCP so I can use clips on my timelines.
    Any hint, tips, advice?
    Thanks in advance!

  • How to import audio/video from DVD into FCP

Hi, I need to import/capture into FCP from a dvd. When dvd files are open on my Mac it show VOB fotmat for video. I imported those files but they don't have audio, also the total time is 20 minutes but when imported into FCP it shows only bout 25 seconds. can someone help on this matter?
    Thanks in advance

Cinematize works great. You can select portions or the entire DVD. It will not read encrypted DVD's so assuming you are using media that you have rights to it will do fine.
You can import in several compressions. If you like you can import only the audio, only the video, etc. It will give you a QT file at the end.

It is songs purchased from iTunes that you cannot convert...and that we cannot explain how to convert. Even though YOU might use it for legal purposes, such as temp music or demo reels, we still cannot explain how to bypass DRM on Apple's own site. Doing so would violate their rules.
BUT...if you have a CD of the music, getting songs is much easier:
#5 Imported music from CD or iTunes
    Shane's Stock Answer #5:
To get music into FCP, it needs to be an AIFF file at 48khz, 16 bit stereo. So if you want a song from a CD, you go into the iTunes Preferences and set this up under the IMPORTING tab:
File > preferences > importing > import using - AIFF encoder > Setting - Custom
    Sample Rate - 48.000 kHz
    Sample size - 16 bit
    Channels - Stereo
If you have an mp3 that you want to use, then you can convert it thru iTunes as well.
If the piece of music you want to use is something you purchased thru iTunes, I'm afraid I can't help you there. There are copywrite issues that prevent files from being converted into the format that FCP can recognize.

  • Flicker/Pixelized movie after importing from motion into FCP

Hello, I captured a clip from HDV tape via Firewire using log and capture in FCP, then exported the clip to Motion where I applied filiters. I made a movie from Motion and imported it back in FCP. The movie required rendering to play and it now has a flicker and is grossly pixelized. Anyone know what could be causing this?

The render requirement is not surprising - all motion clips require rendering. How are you viewing your clip? You can't judge by what you see in the canvas...

  • How do i import a dvd into fcp

is this even possible??? i need to know ASAP.
i am making a pretty sweet movie, and i want to use some clips from star wars in my project.
also, i downloaded a kick *** track by nickleback and want to put that over the scene where the ewoks dance. but for some reason it won't let me import the song i got off itunes into final cut. how do i get around that.
    hurry.

Yes, it surely is possible to import DVD-content in FCP, albeit not directly. This question has been asked more than once over the last few days here. I'd suggest you dig a bit further instead of writing 'hurry' - unless that's your name.

  • How do I import a DVD into FCP to edit?

I have a DVD I made of home movies. When I try to import the stuff on the DVD it says error. It only imports the Video TS portion of the DVD..SO........that means the video shows up on my time time but NO AUDIO?!
How do I import the video AND audio from the DVD?

Have you tried it and gotten no audio? Audio and video are both in Video_TS. The audio folder is for songs such as on a CD.
Use MPEG Streamclip to translate to your desired format.

  • How do you import a DVD into FCP

    Hi Brain Trust,
Have DVD  of old footage and want to import to reedit and save to harddrive. Whats the steps to take.

Most of the folks I know have MPEG Streamclip and use it for a variety of purposes – including ripping non-propected DVD's. There are certainly a whole host of convertor prodicts– but many people report conflict problems, quality problems, or format limitations. One product that you might check out is DVDxDV. I haven't used it, but there is a trial version.
    Good luck.

  • Can't transfer/import XDCAM files from harddrive into FCP

hi, i filmed all of my footage using an XDCAM and had to return the cams immediately. so i copied all the clips from the capture media to an external hard drive (everything within the BPAV folder) one to one. i also downloaded and installed the XDCAM EX Clip Browser on my MacBook Pro and can view the clips.
the problem i have is that i can't import the clips into FCP. the "Import> SONY XDCAM..." feature in FCP won't allow me to access these files. the BPAV folder remains greyed out.
what do i need to do to get the clips into FCP? is there a different plugin i need? the clip browser won't let me export the clips to any other format. i'm stumped. i run FCP computer on my G5 PPC Quad core. the file browser only runs on Intel macs. so i use my MBP to view the clips but that's all i can do.
can someone please help me out ?
    many thx!
    fj

in the spirit of armano'os last post and FYI: i picked up the cams on short notice, never used them before and there were no instructions. the ppl just told me to copy the files over to my HD, since i had to return the cams immediately and had no time to hook up the cams to FCP.
the 'mistake' i seem to have made was that i looked at the data structure and saw that the clips always ended up in the CLPR folder within each BPAV folder - each in its own folder in that fiolder and with XML and data files - so i copied directly to that one BPAV folder i copied from the first capture media i moved to my hard drive instead of copying the entire BPAV folder from each capture media. however i tested the import immediately to see if it actually played back the files in the XDCAM clip browser and they did.
i assumed all was fine with this method and it would save me a lot of duplicate BPAV folders... hopefully though this isn't the end.

  • Why is my import from DVD-R going soooo SLOW??

OK, I'm very new in the Mac world and am still trying to move my photos from my PC. I burned all of the photos to a DVD-R using the Kodak gallery program. I have 3 DVDs of photos.
Now I am in the process of importing into iPhoto. I opened iPhoto, inserted the DVD #1, and then selected import to library. The first thousand photos imported fine, but the last hundred or so have taken FOREVER...like several minutes per photo.
Should I let this just go overnight, or stop the import and try again?
Has anyone ever experienced this slowness when importing from DVD?
    Thanks!
    CC

    CC:
You would be better off copying the files to a folder on the desktop and then into iPhoto as copying from a disk the file first has to be copied to a temp file and then into iPhoto. I don't know how far you are in the current disk import but for the future ones I'd definitely copy to a folder first and then into iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Cannot import from DVD disc

I have recorded a 3 minute segment of a newscast using my DVD recorder - it contains video of a close friend of mine. I have a DVD disc which I burned on the DVD recorder from its Hard Drive containing only this short video which I want to give to him. I have tried to import it into iMovie so that I will have it on my iMac as a backup file but have been unsuccessful. I have tried following the procedure posted by "Appleman1958" in Dec 09 with no success - I know that he indicates that it is for iMovie 09 and perhaps that is my problem since I am working with iMovie HD 6. All I get is a 32 sec portion of the video with no sound. The VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD disc contains the following files: VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.VOB (it appears to be the title menu created by the DVD recorder but has nothing listed on it), VTS010.1F0, VIDEO_TS.1F0, VTS01O.BUP and VTSO11.VOB. I tried dragging ONLY the VIDEO_TS.VOB file onto mpeg streamclip as per the instructions ("drag the non-zero .VOB files and drop them into MPEG Streamclip) but it is only the title menu and there is no video. I tried adding the VTS011.VOB also but again only about 32 sec appears and there is no sound. Sorry, but I am a complete novice at this, do not understand what a VIDEO_TS folder is and what all those files within it mean and need some help here. And yes, I have purchased the Apple MPEG2 QT Component. Any simple, step-wise assistance would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi
Nop. iMovie HD6 are mainly for miniDV tape material imported via FireWire-port.
BUT - it can be done IN SOME CASES
    *DVD back for futhur editing*
    A. don't put a mini DVD into Your Mac unless it’s a trayloaded DVD burner/reader
    B. iMovie’08 prob. 09 can import from DVD (homemade without copyprotection)

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and
made for any processing as editing... or, as honorable forum member
QuicktimeKirk stated. I use the analogy of the old Polaroid
"instant" cameras. Push the button, wait for the print to develop and
    show it off. ..
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in
recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds.
    • DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro. 90$)
    • Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    • Cinematize >60$
    • Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    • Toast 6/7/8/9/10 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    • connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
    • Drop2DV (free) a free tool claiming to convert DVDs into dv-stream...
    • Use iSquint for your conversions . www.iSquint.org

  • Trouble importing .mov files into FCP X

I'm relatively new to FCP so this could be a really easy fix. I took a bunch of short video clips (20s --> 1.5 min) on my Panasonic ZS25 and imported the clips to my MacBook Pro (2008 with 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory and 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor). [I have version 10.8.4 of OSX]. The clips from my camera were in .mts format so I used the Smart Convertor Pro App from the App Store to convert all 80 files to a .mov format. Both the converted clips and FCP X are stored on my 700 GB external, and while I tried to import the clips into FCP X, the program almost immediately froze and shut down. Thinking I "overloaded" (for lack of a better word) FCP X, I decided to try and delete the blank clips that were showing up in the program. However each time I attempted to click on a clip the program crashed again. I eventually was able to delete all the clips, and decided to move the converted clips from my external to my desktop. Once they were moved I then tried to import just one clip from the desktop to FCP X (which is still run through my external). Although it was successfully imported, once I clicked on the file to play it in FCP X the program crashed again.
What can possibly be the problem and what can I do to fix it?
Note: This is my first time using both my new camera (and having to deal with this .mts BS) as well as FCP X.

Thanks Russ, Tom, and Hughmass for all your input. It really is appreciated. Unfortunatly even after moving FCPX to my desktop and converting the .mov files in MPEGstreamclip, importing the movie clips into the program still causes random shut downs. Perhaps the clips are corrupted or something? I honestly don't know, and I'd rather kind of just ignore this problem then keep hashing away seeing as the clips aren't that important (and yes, being super smart, i deleted them off the camera well before hand).
Just to make sure FCPX works, I took some short clips on my Panasonic DMCZS25, and imported them successfully into FCPX and was able to edit together a quick piece. Thanks again for all your help!

  • How to import Powerpoint movie into FCP

I have a powerpoint slideshow from a client and am needing to import it into FCP. In PPT I saved it as "Make Movie", and sought to import as .mov into FCP. When i try to open it, I get error , message, "Out of Memory." I have 27 GB of memory on the main drive, and the file is only 49MB. Any help would be appreciated.

First find a sharp object, then look for the soft spot on the inside of your wrist...
    or if you must,
Export each slide as a still file and rework them in Motion. You probably need to set them on a background because NO ONE EVER build powerpoint for text safe in video.
