Importing HDV-recapturing media imported as DV to HDV

Had problems importing HDV shot on a Canon HDV camera using a Sony HD700 deck so imported as DV due to time constraints (family video). Project is finished but read a recent post by redtruck changed my settings and can now import as HDV. Question I have is with the new DVC Pro HD settings, can I go back to the original project and just recapture all the clips in the new format? Or are there other considerations. Using FCP 5.1.4
Thanks

A quick update. I tried to re-capture a single clip. Set deck to HDV instead of Auto as suggested in other posts. When I go to re-capture, it recognizes the start point, clip show up in capture window but doesn't recognize end point of clip and just keeps trying to capture past the out point. Have all AV settings at DVD Pro HD and device control preset at DVC Pro HD firewire. Set AV device playback output at Firewire DVC Pro NTSC (720x480) and audio at Firewire DV.
Any suggestions?

  • Using Project files to recapture media?

I have lots of video that I captured using capture now. If anything were to ever happen to the media captured, can the project file somehow be used to recapture the exact segment of video I originally had without having to go through the whole process all over again?
What about if the project file includes edits and I somehow lose the media. If it is recaptured, will the edits in the project file apply to the recaptured video?
    Thanks.

Pre roll is adding time to the head and tail of each clip, also called 'handles' so you have some room to change edit points, add transitions, recapture media etc. in the future. Pre roll is a FCP setup item prior to capture.
That's not quite right, Don. Pre-roll and handles are completely un-related. Handles are what you are describing in your post. Pre-roll is a recognition of playback ballistics in that a deck needs to cue to a point prior to the in-point on the tape to be captured. This is because the tape needs time to come up to speed and stabilize before you begin capture.
The amount of pre-roll required varies with the deck. I believe DV decks are often set at 6 seconds. Digibeta is lower, at 3 seconds.
As to why Capture now is generally a bad practice (or at least a sloppy one that can cause trouble) - By logging prior to capture, you can name your clips, and the quicktime media generated will have the same name. This is a LOT better that having a bunch of clips labeled untitled-1, untitled-2, etc littering your hard drive - especially if you run into the need to re-link your media.
Also, historically, there were drawbacks to using capture now - one of which was that FCP tried to allocate your entire hard drive. Revisions 5 and later deal with this more gracefully.
You also keep from filling your hard drive by FCP informing you if what you want to capture will actually fit on your scratch disk.
Finally, that little pre-roll thing mentioned above can thwart your attempts to recapture your media at a later date... (or certainlly complicate them).

  • Editing offlineRT, recapturing media at full quality comes back too big

I have been editing offlineRT (motion jpeg) then recapturing the media at full quality, in some cases HDV, others DVntsc, but when I create copy of the project and recapture, the video is coming in way bigger than the canvas space. I have had to manually resize each clip.
When first capturing as offlineRT, the prompt warns that the project preset doesn't match the media, would you like to change the project settings? So, I have tried it both ways.
    What have I missed?
    Thanks, John

DId you go through Media Manager when you did this? Because if not, then your sequence is still probably an OFFLINE RT setting sequence, 320x240. Your clips will be full res and full size....720x480 if DV. So yeah, if you are dropping them into an offline RT sequence, not only will they be too big, but you'll have to render them and they will get rendered into an OFFLINE RT codec.
If you used the Media manager, you'd get a new sequence with the proper settings and frame size, and no need to render.

  • Recapturing media situation

I have a fcphd project file that had all the media (10 hours) deleated from external hd. I still have the project file and all reels have no timecode breaks. I am trying to recapture all the media using batch capture in the capture window. I am having problems with the timecode. FCP cant find it and then it aborts capture.
I also have a duplicated item prompt before it will go to the batch window. The window asks if I want to rename a file because there is already a file in that name. The thing is that the file that needs a new name is a WAV. file that has nothing to do with the reels I am trying to capture. Answers are really appreciated and I thank you in advance for any help.
    you replied:
I know the goal is to populate the sequence with its media, but let's run a test first. In the Browser, select one of the shorter Master Clips, right-click and select Batch Capture.
See if FCP can find the TC for that one clip. If not, manipulate the tape in the deck, parking it a few frames or a second before the Start TC. Now see if Batch Capture can find it. (Also, compare teh TC numbers between what Capture wants to see and what is on tape.)
Please tell me what happens. There's more that can be done to get you back in the ballgame.
I have tried these things with no avial. wondering what else can be done to "get me back in the Ballgame!!"

What is this. Iv'e never heard. that would be great if you could explain.the other parts of the old thread are usless because they are things I knew about media manager anyway.
    <
Capture Now may have been how you originally captured the footage so, of course, there will be no timecode in your project that can be deciphered by Media Manager. But you already know that.
You may know what the previous thread was about but those of who aren't going to go back and look for it don't know that what we try to tell you will be waste of time. So some of us won't bother.
Recovering a project from the stock tapes is usually as easy as running MM and making offline and then recapturing. If your VCR isn't reading timecode, try cleaning your heads. It's not likely an FCP issue.
There are still many things worth trying. But your best bet might be to admit to yourself and your sponsor that you've destroyed your project and simply start over. I don't know why you deliberately deleted your footage but try not to make that mistake again.

  • Recapturing Media (but just audio)!

I have a movie 8 min 32 sec long (Uncompressed HD 8-bit). Files were captured without any handles because I don't have enough disk space and there were 258 clips to capture.
Now I have to prepare audio for mixing studio and they say they need handles 50 frames long.
That means that for 8,5 min long film I have to record another 17 min of material just for handles. I don't have to tell you that this represents some problems concerning disk space. The format of the movie is HD as I said before.
---Is there any way that I can recapture just audio without video?---
I know that I can using media manager make an offline sequence in some smaller format, recapture that, and just copy audio from there. But Media manage doesn't always work 100% (concerning the Speed of clips and such) and that can bring some problems on its own.
    Thanks, Peter!
P.s.: I am using FCS 2.0 all the latest updates and stuff.

Yes, you should be able to (re)capture only audio but you'll need to be careful about how you do so.
You certainly wouldn't want to simply recapture existing media in your current project - that just might end up end up overwriting your existing clips. You'll need to determine how you can do this give the limited drive space you have.
But one thing I don't understand, you knew enough (about the cuts you were going to make and/or the material that you needed) that you didn't capture with any handles? If you're exporting an OMF for the sound guy(s) I'm not sure that they handles they're asking for are the same as the handles you're thinking of. That is, you might not need to recapture anything...

  • How to recapture with header?

Is there a way to recapture media with an additional header on it? So, say I wanted to disconnect my media and recapture it with the in point on each clip backed up by three or four seconds.
    How can I do that?

You could however, simply create a new 'logged' clip, with the adjusted IN points.
If you've already edited with the original media, you'd need to rename the new clips exactly as you named the originals, if you needed it to reconnect to cuts already made.
Then, I'd make the original media offline and reconnect to the new media.
Bear in mind that if you originally did a non-controllable device capture, you won't have the same time code from the original captures.

  • Editing large stills in HD

I need to edit a sequence with dramatic pans and zooms of stills that need to be in DVC Pro HD 1080i 60. This means that my images have to be very large in order to not have a pixelated look when closely zoomed in on. No worries there, got the big tiff files.
The problem is while editing in FCP 5, even with a super fast SATA II harddrive connection, moving these massive images, and making transitions and putting filters on the images lags drastically because there so big, though they need to be in order to get those great zooms, pans and so on in HD.
Is there a way to edit these large stills in a smaller project file, or offline, with smaller image sizes, and then convert it to a larger project with the larger images? Any ideas? Thanks,
    -Pat

Ok - I'll admit I've never had to use an edl - but that's likely to be your sol'n to this - staying in fcp.
Save out your stills in dv size - make a new dv proj (16:9, I guess just for appearance sake) work in dv & get everything the way you want, filters etc; - and I'll have to let someone else lead you thru' the next bit.
But as I understand it you export out your edl (or is xml the way to go ? dunno) then bring that into your hurky big project. The manual will have this covered I'm sure. never read that bit ....
edit: ah here you go to start.

    Offline/Online Editing Workflows
The offline/online editing process in Final Cut Pro consists of the following steps:
Step 1: Set up and capture media at low resolution
You can log and capture your footage directly to low-resolution, offline-quality media files. Alternatively, you can log and capture your footage at full resolution, and then use the Media Manager to create low-resolution media files for offline editing. The latter method is useful if you want to have both full-resolution and low-resolution media for two different systems simultaneously.
Step 2: Edit with offline-quality (low-resolution) media files
You edit just as you would with any other footage. Because you are using low- resolution footage, you can fit much more footage on your hard disk, and use a portable PowerBook editing system.
Step 3: Create a sequence for recapturing media at full resolution
When you finish editing your low-resolution sequence, you use the Media Manager to create a copy with full-resolution settings. For this step, you choose the Create Offline option in the Media pop-up menu.
Important: It is important to understand the difference between clips and media files when performing this step. This option only creates a new sequence with new sequence clips at full-resolution, but no new media files are created. Once you have a
sequence with full-resolution settings, you can recapture your media files at full- resolution. Also, the word “offline” in the Create Offline option actually refers to creating clips whose media files are offline, and doesn’t actually relate to the offline/online editing process. For more information, see “Clips Described By Their Properties” on
    page 31.

  • Timecode synced to clock is disastrous in trying to capture! HELP!

So, the shooter I was working with decided to sync up the timecodes on two cameras by setting them to the clock. So, now that i am capturing, final cut recognizes a timecode break (jump) everytime the shooter pressed pause on the record button (because time of course kept ticking)! This is resulting in one tape being broken up into about 25 to 50 different files in capture. In all honestly, chronology means nothing for this footage, so i dont need the cameras to be in sync. Is there anyway to ignore the timecode breaks so that i can capture a good 20-30 minute clip? Each time final cut creates a new clip, i lose valuable seconds of footage on either end of each clip. my friend says the only solution is to dub the tape onto a nother tape using a deck and thus creating all new timecodes. this seems like a huge headache and also potentially a good way to lose image quality. HELP!

My idea scenario would be to keep the original timecode marks, but enable final cut to capture as one single clip. Is there a way to get final cut to ignore the timecode breaks so that it captures in a single clip? Is that what this command does?
"If you're dead set on not taking this option then you can change your FCP > User Preferences >> On timecode break: to Warn After Capture ... your media will be captured as a single clip but should you need to recapture / reconnect to the newly recaptured media at a later date you won't be able to do so"
It doesnt make sense to me that if the original timecoding is still on the captured material that I wouldnt be able to recapture just because i've skipped over the breaks...

  • Audio on original tape vs audio in fcp

    hey!
the audio on my original mini dv cam tape is clean but on playback in fcp it sounds bad i.e. the audio cuts in and out periodically - i have adjusted the user settings to 'high' quality audio playback and this makes no difference...
has anybody else had this experience?
do you know a work around?
    with many thanks,
    will.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   fcp 5.0.4

recapture a portion of the source which you can verify is corrupted in fcp but good on the master. if the recaptured media is corrupted in exactly the same way, and in exactly the same place, well then there may be an issue .... but lets verify that it exists first. if the recapture is ok then thats your answer.

  • How do I capture tape-based media to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The manual says to import tape footage directly into fcpx, but then I lose my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

In FCP X How do I capture tape-based media (hdv clips)- which I want to import-to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The FCPX manual says to import tape footage directly into final cut, which works, but then I lose  my external hard drive    Do I  have to import it into an event, then copy it over to an external hard drive?  On Larry Jordan's tutorial, he has 3 external hard drives that show up on his monitor WHILE he imports his tape based media.  How is that done?  I can only get either the camera to appear OR my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response, but that doesn't solve the problem.  Yes, the LaCie hard drive has 2 firewire ports-
I have always done what you suggest (works fine in FCP7), but in FCPX when I do that the camcorder icon
does not appear.  It only shows up when I DIRECTLY import the footage via firewire.  ????

  • Importing HDV files (.m2t) no audio in timeline (or sound gaps in audio file) ONLY IN CS6 !

After importing HDV files, wait for conforming, and drop the files to sequence, on some files there is no audio at all or partial audio.
All files played OK in any mediaplayer.
I have no such problems in CS5 or 5.5 using the same files in the same project and sequence type. HDV 1080i/25
I reinstall PR CS6 and I delete all ".cfa" and ".pek" files, but no success.

All right so what I just discover so far in order to resolve this non sense bug thing, I've exported the faulted sequence in EDL, track by track.
On the original sequence, I had a Prores 422 video clip name "Clip 497" that was manually sync with an audio file call "Audio 10".
At another timecode in the original timeline, I had a h264 clip name "MVI_0050" that was synced with an audio file call "Tascam_0455".
I said that when I select only an audio file in the timeline and I make reveal in the project, it links me to the correct audio file in the bin but when I make match frame or reveal in the finder, it links the audio to a video file. The
Well the EDL just confirmed that, in the timeline created by the EDL, I have to relink manually all the files (wich is a pain in...) and my mysterious audio file "Audio 10" appears with the name "MVI_0050", I can still link it to the original "Audio 10" but I don't understand HOW an audio get to be linked to a video file......
The audio file coming from the Tascam still have their original names in the timeline.
Very weird and not very cool.
Oh  and guess what, after closing Premiere and re open it, my sequence coming from the EDL where I spent 1 hours to manually relink the media....does not have sound anymore.......................

  • How can I import HDV-Files from a CF-Card to Final cut Pro 5.1.4

How can I import HDV-Files from a CF-Card (recorded with the Sony HVR Z 7E) to Final cut Pro Version 5.1.4 – is this possible at all?
I managed to import the files to Premiere, but it was just a test. I am working at a very huge documentary project with Final cut Pro Version 5.1.4 thats why I would prefere not to change the program or the version.
Simply exporting from Premiere back to final cut is also very complicated.
    Thanks for any ideas.

First, copy the card to a hard drive connected to your fcp workstation.  I always back up all card based media at least 2 or three times.  All hard drive will eventually fail.  It's a question of when, not if.
I'm not familiar with this particular camera, but examine the contents of the copied files and see if you can find any .mov files.  You can try importing these directly into fcp.
If you don't, you can try something like clipwrap
    http://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap
    or
    Magic Bullet Grinder
    http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/
But, I'd really advise upgrading to at least fcp6 or ideally fcp7 if you can find a copy.  HDV is a problematic format.  Although you can certainly work with it and it's a fcp approved format, converting your media to prores would make your life much easier.

  • Export sequence for import as media source?

Im shooting hour long HDV tapes and need to work with them in FCP as hour long, uninterrupted media files. Unfortunately, there are timecode breaks and things like that that break the media apart upon import. I've reassembled the hour long footage in a sequence and would now like to export that sequence so that it is a full quality, hour long media source I can then reimport. I need the new media file to be the identical quality of the original footage and original import. How can I do this? Thank you.

Go to File->Export->QuickTime Movie. When the export window opens, click the 'Make Movie Self Contained' button. Do NOT recompress all frames. Your exported clip will be the exact same quality as your Sequence in FCP.

  • Any known issues with Premiere CC and imported HDV clips?

I'm having consistent difficulty with Premiere CC playback of HDV video that originated in FCP 7. This was not an issue in Premiere CS6. The problem is dropout and pixelization which is consistent, pass after pass, and occurs at the same TC location on some clips. It is almost like some clips are corrupted in a consistent manner, while others are not, and don't seem to become corrupted.
For a variety of reasons, I still shoot HDV on a Z1U, and use an old FCP7 workstation to digitize media. I then import these individual video clip files into CS6. These are clips that play correctly in FCP, Premier CS6, and in the Finder, and Quicktime Pro, but not Premiere CC.
I have Dropboxed a sample clip to my service contact at AJA, and she is reporting the same issue with Premiere CC. (The technical support at AJA is the best I've experienced in over 30 years of video production).
The same issue presents itself with HDV clips that were converted to such from .m2v via Clipwrap.
Any other types of media play correctly within Premiere CC. For example, I have a CS6 project that is nothing but After Effect CS6 anims comiled into a program in Premiere CS6; it plays perfectly. So do any media that Premiere CC puts through its own conversion or import "routine," like AVCHD. Even XDCAM clips that went into FCP via XDCAM Transfer play well.
    Any thoughts?

    Tim,
I would assume the clips work fine in FCP7, so you're not totally busted. Maybe try using Compressor or AME, like the other guy said, to export them in another format; I'd recommend Apple ProRes 422. Fallback is to work in FCP7, as the tapes are gone.
When I 1st posted this problem, I left for vacation. I saw briefly that someone suggested a plugin in another reply, but I haven't had a chance to pursue that yet. I'm in northern Michigan (USA) with limited access to email. I'll do some follow up this Monday when I return. Good luck!!

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 crashing when importing HDV Video

For some reason I keep getting crashes when importing HDV (720p60) video into the timeline of Adobe Premiere Pro CS6.  This has happened on two different machines, with similar specs.
Per the suggested guidelines, here are the specifics:
    Version of Premiere Pro: CS6, Version 6.0.5 (001 (MC:264587))
    All updates have been installed.
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.8.5.
Source footage: HDV 720p60 video in .MOV container.
Full text of error message: "Sorry, a serious error has occured that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down.  We will attempt to save your current project."
Link to full crash report: http://goo.gl/Gn8Bzn
Crash occurs when trying to import HDV .MOV file.
This is a consistent problem when importing .MOV files of this type.
Complete Adobe Creative Suite is installed.  Also using Episode Pro encoding software from Telestream to prepare HDV video.  No other external video hardware or codecs installed.
Yes, I am using the Mecury Playback Engine GPU acceleration.
