Importing Image Sequences Issue

I have been supplied with Tiff Image Sequences rendered out of Maya. Unfortunately they do not import correctly, or in order, though their naming convention seems correct.

ep000sq01_sh0010_compv02.0002.tif
ep000sq01_sh0010_compv02.0003.tif
When imported into QT 7.1.3 if I scroll frame by frame through the resulting QT movie there are numerous duplicate frames, dropped frames and frames out of order. This should not be due to my machine as the specs are quite sufficient [G5 DP 2GHz / OS X 10.4.8, 1 GB Ram] as compare to the QT required specs page, see http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/recommendations.html
The Tiff images are of a decent resolution [1280x720].
Also when imported into FCP 5.0.4 even if in my user preferences under the Editing tab my Still/Freeze Duration is set to 1 frame, the images in the image sequences will not import with a duration of 1 frame BUT import with a duration of 0 frames.
This all seems very buggy / conflicted for reasons unknown to me at this time.
If there are any suggestions they will be extremely welcome as time is of the essence [unfortunately].
Thanks in advance.

I use the Animation codec and in both cases the fps selected are 25 fps.
Funnily enough, the image sequences have come from an organisaion that I assumed would have their naming conventions sorted, EG enabling easy consolidation into one QT movie or importing into FCP.
I agree with you that the naming convention may be the cause of the conflict, possibly working better if we dropped that additional "full stop" between the "2" and the first of three "0"s.

Regardless, thanks for your advice.

  • Imported image sequence in PP CC 2014 causes animated layers to flicker

I have a project which has a primary layer formed of imported JPGs that are in sequence. These are shots from a time lapse and are sequentially named and imported without issue into Premier Pro. I then have a secondary layer with a simple After Effects composition that comprises a slow fade and animation of some title text. The problem I have is that during playback in PP (or once rendered) the animation of the text in the AA layer flickers. Watching it frame by frame in the preview window it is slowly fading in but each alternate frame it's opacity seems to go back one frame before advancing.
Now I can completely fix this by exporting the image sequence clip in my bin to a video file. If I then replace the image sequence with a video made using exactly the same images it works fine and the animation is perfectly smooth. My question is why does PP not treat the imported image sequence the same as a video with its interaction with other layers?

    Hi there.
Looking at the footage, you are exporting at 24P. There are books written on 24P and how to shoot (or edit) for it. What I see as a possible mistake.
You are moving the photo too fast across the screen. That could be the same as panning too fast in 24P. Same result. The video clips are moving much slower and don't show the staggering.
    Give it a try.

  • Importing Image Sequences...

When I export a video clip into an image sequence and import those images back, they become 10 second long stills. How do you import them and automatically have their duration as only 1 frame?

or use quicktimepro to import image sequences and do a save as a quicktime movie. FCP can choke on the sheer number of files involved in an image sequence.

  • Wacky image sequence issue - flickers

    Hi guys,
I've created a simple 2 image sequence I wanted to play through at the top of my DPS document - but when I preview the article (on both desktop, iphone and ipad) the image sequence fails..
I took a quick screencap to show what Im going.

    Any advice?

For a two-image effect, I would use a slideshow instead of an image sequence. Not sure what's causing the flicker.

  • Compressor 3.5 and Importing Image Sequences

    Hi,
    The marketing says,
    ++++++++++++++++++++
    Image sequence support
Graphics compositing applications and film workflows often use an image sequence format for cross-platform compatibility as well as to keep quality high. Image sequences treat each video or film source frame as a still image.
Compressor 3.5 imports image sequences in standard formats including TIFF, Targa, DPX, and OpenEXR. You can specify an audio file to incorporate with the image sequence as you import it — for example, the original field-recorded audio for a clip that was converted to a sequence.
    ++++++++++++++++++++
But exactly how is this done with Compressor 3.5? Don't see it in the wizard or Add File dialogue boxes.
    thanks!

    Oops, just found it.
Job > New Job With Image Sequence...
However, I can import a SGI file on it's own, but not with the above menu selection - the files are gray'd out.

    I quote:
Not specifically "import" but you can open a series of images as an animation. This will place each image in its own state, suitable for creating an animation.

  • Import image sequences

I work in a post production enviroment and am finding it problematic that i cant import image sequences into compressor of FCP. I know the work around to import into quicktime and export a reference movie. But this is both time consuming and anoying is there a way to do this otherwise ??

I do this all the time. Render your image sequence to a separate folder for each pass, use a numbering fomat like bg_0001.tif, the go to File>Import and select any file in the folder and check the Image Sequence box and import.

    > Is there anyplace to go to find known bugs with the program incase something like this arises in the future?
We often post solutions to known issues on the Technical Support part of our site.
I'll go ahead and write up a quick list of known issues in After Effects CC (12.2) with workarounds.
Regarding the update that we thought we'd be releasing this week: We ran into a problem in which one of our fixes broke something else (which is why we do the testing), and we're having to redo some things. My current estimate is that the update will not come out this week but will come out some time within the next couple of weeks. Sorry for the delay, but we need to get this right more than we need to get it out fast.
I'll post a summary of workarounds tomorrow to bridge the time between now and when the update is released.

  • Very poor Playback of imported image sequence

    Hello,
I really tried to work around this problem but I'm resigned to see that premiere pro seems to handle very bad the playback of imported sequence of numbered stills.
I began with premiere elements. I imported my footage as image sequence (from 3dsmax), and saw that the playback was poor. It seemed to be playable after background rendering was finished, but BG rendering is soooo long due to an issue with nvidia hardware. So I'm forced to disable BG rendering, but the problem is that the sequence go unplayable again, etc, etc.
I decided to install premiere pro cs5 trial to test, thinking that it will definitively fix the problem,
but... same poor, almost unusable playback with numbered stills.
I have a strong hardware (dual xeon 5650, quadro 4000, 48gb ram), so I think it's not the cause.
I disable my antivirus while using premiere.
Video sequences (avi, mov, etc), play smoothly, but when you work with CG 3D footage, you always export in image sequences, and I want to be able to edit my footages in premiere, as compositing softwares aren't built for the same kind of tasks.
After effects plays images sequences very smoothly, so why not premiere?
I did convert my image sequences to avi or mov uncompressed, but even with no compression, there's a significant loss of quality, and I want to avoid this loss to be able to edit my footage and output my final video based on the best image quality possible.
    Thank you for answering

I have a strong hardware (dual xeon 5650, quadro 4000, 48gb ram), so I think it's not the cause.
You did not mention your disk setup.
Playing back numbered image sequences at high resolution is
probably the most disk IO intensive thing you can ask Premiere to do.
Without a dedicated RAID controller and multi-disk setup, you will likely be
forced to timeline preview render all your image sequences for real time playback.
After effects plays images sequences very smoothly, so why not premiere?
AE will not play image sequences in real time until you render a RAM preview.
I did convert my image sequences to avi or mov uncompressed, but even with no compression, there's a significant loss of quality...
There will be no loss of quality if you use a lossless codec for your
digital intermediate file (i.e. Lagarith or UT), and these uncompressed files
will play smoothly in Premiere without needing to render timeline previews.

  • Import Image Sequence not importing all images

I have a sequence of 99 JPG images that I am trying to import into Premiere Pro. These images were created by an export from Lightroom.
When I perform the import starting at the first image, only 35 images are imported.
If I import the sequence starting at the 34th image, only 2 images are imported.
If I import the sequence starting at the 35th image, only 1 image is imported (and it is imported as an image file it appears).
If I import the sequence starting at the 36th image, the remaining images are imported.
I have tried a number of different settings for the export from lightroom, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. For example, if I export as TIFF I see the exact same problem. If I export as JPG using a smaller image size I see the exact same problem.
I have tried "Replace Footage..." to no effect.
When I inspect the image files using an image view there appear to be no issues with the files. File sizes are consistent and not inordinantly large (~5MB).
The filenames are all properly numbered as expected by Premiere Pro.
I have done this successfully dozens of times before this problem arose, and I have done it successfully a number of times since the problem arose. The problem appears to happen only with this particular set of images.
I can work around the problem by importing the images as two separate imports (one starting at the first image and a second starting at the 36th image) and putting them both in a single sequence. In fact, this spliced sequence looks as expected with no missing frames or anything else untoward that I can see.
I've poked around with this for a couple days, and cannot discern any other factors that may be causing this.
Does anybody have any idea what might be going on?

I checked the filenames again and they're properly sequenced with no extra or missing spaces or anything else that doesn't follow the pattern of the first 34 images. In fact, I took a screenshot of this, and in doing so I figured out what the problem is.
Here's a screenshot of the directory with all the images.
As I was reviewing this screenshot, I noticed that the "Date" column goes over midnight. Images 0001-0034 all took place before midnight, and images 0035-0099 took place after midnight.
This column shows the capture time of the images, coming from the camera and through the export from Lightroom. This is different from the creation date of the exported file, which is shown in the "Date modified" column (cropped out of screenshot). In other words, you can see that I took the pictures on February 25 and 26, but exported them on March 1.
To verify that this might be the problem I used "Edit Capture Time..." in Lightroom to shift all the images an hour earlier. This means that there is no longer a date change in the sequence as they all have capture times before midnight. I then exported the images from Lightroom again, and imported them into Premiere Pro.
When I do this, all the images are imported into Lightroom successfully.
I realize this is only one data point, but it sounds like Premiere Pro is maybe using the capture time as part of its sequencing heuristics, and for some reason it isn't handling a date change properly. Or maybe something else is afoot.
    What do you think?

  • Import image sequence problem

    Hi. I have Compressor 5.3.5.
I'm importing a TIF image sequence (1080p 25fps) to get an Apple Pro Res 422 HQ (using presets). I set the fps to 25 and start the conversion. Then I find the resulting Quicktime clip (Apple Pro Res 422 HQ) plays fast (like fast-forward). Also the clip has the expected time duration (length) but the last frame stays freezed till the clip ends, because the video is in fast-forward and freezes the last to fit the time duration. I tried the same with other presets (iPod h264, no presets at all, etc), but all give the same problem.
Also I tried to get the video file from the TIF sequence using Final Cut Pro and everything looks fine except the color/contrast... that's why I need to use Compressor and not Final Cut.
Can you help me please? I have googled this issue but found no related topics.
    Thanks.

In fact, Compressor create an XML file in ~/Library/Application\ Support/Compressor/Scratch/
In this XML, you've got sound, framerate and field dominance information if you set it in the inspector panel :
    <key>audioLocation</key>
              <string>path://to/audio/file.aif</string>
    <key>fieldOrder</key>
              <integer>2</integer>
    <key>frameRate</key>
              <real>25</real>
But nothing if you don't set it. So Compressor believe that your image sequence is at 29.97 even if it's a 25 fps sequence...

  • Importing Image Sequences into FCP

Hi, My animator sent some instructions for trying to import an Image Sequence into FCP. It said to change the Still Freeze Frame Duration to 1 frame per second, then import the folder and drag the folder to V2 or higher. I've done this and got the error message 'insufficient content for edit' and got it again when I dragged the first file from the folder onto the V2 in the timeline.
Any suggestions as to why the error message is coming up. Does the Still Freeze Frame duration have to be changed?
Thanks SO much for your help.

Ok, now I'm curious because I've done a bit of animation files in FCP before.
What kind of files are they? .tga?
Can you drag just one into the Browser from the Finder, then drag that into the timeline? What happens?
How are you putting the images into the timeline? Dragging the folder? Have you tried a new sequence to test it?
I've had issues with FCP not recognizing them before because they were in some weirdo quasi-.tga format before but I haven't seen that error associated with this before.
Oh, do you have your tracks targeting buttons set correctly as well as the toggle auto-select indicators?

  • Quicktime Pro 7.6.9 crashes when I try to import image sequence

    Hi,
I'm running Quicktime Pro 7.6.9 on a Windows XP machine with service pack 3.
I shot some timelapses with my Nikon D7000 as jpegs and while trying to import the image sequences into Quicktime so I can export them out as .MOVs, I noticed that Quicktime crashes when ever I try to import a sequence that has 240 or more pictures. Most of my timelapses have 240 or 360 pictures. I was able to import a sequence that had only 180 pictures. Does Quicktime Pro 7.6.9. have an image sequence limit that I don't know about? I don't have any sequences that are anything between 180 and 240, so I can't test out numbers like 190, 200, 210, etc.
    Any ideas on what's happening?

The files are 4928x3264 JPEGs. I'm trying to make 1920x1080 .MOV files. Quicktime crashes as soon as I select the first pic from the image sequence.
I tried another sequence that had 600 pics and it worked fine, so it's obviously not some sort of image limit. But I can't figure out why these three sequences that each have 240 images would cause the program to crash everytime.

  • Image Sequence Issue

I've got some large pictures I've been asked to make into a sequence and retain as much of their quality as possible, they will be used in a PDF plan report. I started with Flash but it couldn't handle the full size images (5184x3456 - 72dpi). I've moved over to Premiere but I'm getting something weird happening when I import them in as a numbered group. They import fine but only 1 image is being shown in the preview for the complete sequence and the sequence icon in the project is a jpg icon not the little movie film icon you normally get. Any idea what might be happening?
My sequence setting in Premiere is 5184x3456 10fps. There are 17 images and I want them to play about 3 seconds each.
    Thank you for your help,
    Jenna

Don't import as an Image Sequence.
Start by going into Preferences and change Default Still Duration to 3x your intended frame rate.  (3 x 24 fps = 72, or 3 x 30 fps = 90, etc.)  Then import all your images normally.  When you bring them to the sequence, they'll be 3 seconds long.
