Importing Multiple Clips in Order

Does anyone know why when I import video from either my video camera or off of a DVD through a ripping software the clips come in in multiple clips? I could deal with this if they came in the same order but they aren't even close to being in order.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Peter

Don't import into or edit in the clips viewer, do so to the Timeline. Then they will always be in order.
Regard the clips viewer as merely a 'parking lot' for stuff you may not need but don't want to delete yet.

  • Imported multiple clips 22 minutes long - 90 min to share - Normal?

I have multiple 1 to 3 minute clips imported into iMovie. All clips plus background sound is 22 minutes long. I am exporting now to the LARGE format. It shows 90 minutes left. This is more than 4 to 1. Is this normal?
I am running a MBP 2.2 ghz with 4GB or ram. This seems like such a long time to export to something that I would have thought wouldn't have much encoding to do since I imported to this same format from the camera.
Does this seem normal or am I doing something wrong. Should I be more patient? Thanks in advance.

Yeah it is. Because the computer is converting the file into a different format (Quicktime) it takes very long, especially for video files. Just be patient and do something else on the computer (surf the web) or some other things.

  • How do I sort clips in order imported?

In iMovie11, I imported a previously edited movie from my Sony DV camera.  The iMovie software automatically broke the edited movie back down into clips, which is annoying enough but it was made even more annoying by the fact that THE CLIPS ARE NOT IMPORTED IN ORDER OF THE EDITED MOVIE.
I've researched this and am told that iMovie6 doesn't do this.  I have iMovie6 but unfortunately it doesn't work with the new OS.
    Sigh.
So.  Am I missing something?  Is there any way to import one long 1-hour clip in iMovie11?  If not...
Is there any way to sort the clips in the order they were imported so I can reconstruct the movie easily?
That's the only thing I can think of besides buying Final Cut Pro.

Sorry, I missed part 2. Unless CS4.2 has added a true "Group" function, like in InDesign, Illustrator, etc., there is not a direct way to keep Selected Clips together. However, you can put them on their own Sequence and then Nest that Sequence with others. This is often done, so that one can apply Effects "globally" to that Nested Sequence. [Note: there is no real Group function in Titler either, but for many operations, one can Select multiple Text Blocks, Shapes, Lines, etc., but there is no way to permanently "hold" that group.]
The Alt-click in the Project Panel, for instance, will allow one to drag all to the Timeline, and the Shift-click (or lasso w/ Cursor) in the Timeline will allow one to apply certain things to that group, but the moment that any other Clip is Selected, that "group," does not exist.
I can see a use for a real Group function, but for things like the application of Effects, one would still need to do the Nesting. Test this out by Selecting just two Clips, and go to apply an Effect - you cannot do that. OTOH, one can apply an Effect to one Clip, Rt-click it and choose Copy, then Select multiple Clips and Rt-click on those, where you would Paste Attributes. Not exactly what I think you are asking about, but the results, with just a few clicks, should be the same.
If I missed your intent and need, let me know where I went wrong.
    Good luck,

  • Corrupted clip import from DV: cut into multiple clips, wrong date

After importing DV tapes into iMovie '09, especially older ones, many takes are wrongly cut into multiple clips, some having the correct recording date & time, others having the current date & time. I have a single take, 32 minutes, cut into 685 tiny clips! All out of order... It's almost impossible to puzzle them in the correct order (and I lack the time).
Can iMovie be set to disregard timestamp info from the tape, and simply put clips in the order they are received from the tape? I could easily set the date & time by hand, and even make it understand it's one take, but not if it's a clip puzzle... Help!

Can imovie HD run on 10.6? I tried to install it and it said I needed iLife 08 installed first.
    Yes. It works fine.
    You have 6.0.4, you want 6.0 > 6.0.3 ONLY. 6.0.4 looks for iLife '08.
You can get iMovie 06 in a number of ways. You cannot download it FROM APPLE any longer (it was free for a time). You can also find iMovie 06 on the iLife 06 install disc. You can buy iLife 06 on Amazon or eBay. WELL WORTH EVERY PENNY!
iMovie 6.0.4 requires that iLife 08 is already installed. iMovie 6.0 thru iMovie 6.0.3 has no such requirement. There are no known functional differences between 6.0.3 and 6.0.4. If you install iMovie 06 from the iLife 06 disk it will probably be version 6.0 or 6.01. However you can update the software to 6.0.3 from Apple's Web site.

    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/imoviehd603.html
If you want to have both iMovie 06 and iLife 09 (and most do) just install iMovie 06 first, then iLife 09. You are now UN-STOPPABLE!
Also when you install iLife 08 or 09, iMovie 06 is not removed from the computer. Previous editions of iMovie were always un-installed when "upgrading" in the past. Apple leaves iMovie 06 on your system, because they want you to have it. iMovie 06 works great with iDVD 09.

  • Importing .dv clips from hard drive -- clips imported in random order

I use Firewire DTE drives with my camera when filming. Previously I could connect the drives to my computer via firewire and then import the clips into iMovie HD and the clips would go into the clip sorter in chronological order.
As of about two weeks ago my clips have started showing up in the clip sorter in completely random order. My projects are typically about 400 clips, so going through and getting them in order takes forever.
    Any ideas?

  • Incorrect order after importing multiple files into iMovie 11

If I use Toast to burn multiple .DV files (converted by Toast) using compress onto a single layer DVD, I get a pause between each file, so I wanted to put them all into the one file before burning.
    Problem.
Imported 5 .DV filles into iMovie 11 New Event as a block. Exported as Quick Time. Found file order not correct, eg File 1 was in position 4.
    Tried importing in 1, 2 order and it appeared as 2, 1. Imported in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 order but it turned-out to be 2, 3, 4, 5, 1.
File 1 was the last one converted, so it appears iMovie puts it in date/time order. I can't find a 'sort' like iPhoto has. Also, I can't find anyway of sorting in this forum.
Does anyone know of a way to sort New Event videos so that I can drag them all to the project in one go? I've tried one-by-one, but get a gap in between each one.
Alternatively, how do I drag each New Event video to the Project without any gap between them?
Before you suggest it, I've tried iPhoto and export as Slideshow. Problems. Converting orig to .Mov (HD) eventually produces bad vieo after a hugh amount of total processing time and iPhoto deosn't recognise .DV.
    Any ideas?

Since my posting, I've found a way to do what I wanted.
Set 'Drag to adjust number of frames per thumbnail displayed' slider to All. This creates a single frame for the whole file.
Moving the cursor over one frame displays its contents and I can work-out which is the first, etc.
Select the whole file by pressing Option before clicking on the one frame.
Drag the file to the lower part of of the Project window (automatically puts it into the next position).
This gives me all the files in the correct order and with nothing missing or gaps.

  • Getting Multiple clips when importing DV file into iMovie 7

In previous versions of iMovie you could set a preference for importing movie files that either brought it in as one big clip or multiple clips. I don't see this in the new version. When I import a DV file it breaks it into about 30 clips. How can I bring in my file as one big clip?
I would appreciate fast response as I am on a deadline for this project. Thanks!!

There is no answer to this question. Its just the way it is and it stinks. I will continue to use iMovie 6

I've never used iMovie before but I figured out how to get a home dvd imported. I mounted the disk image and everything and when I open iMovie is gives me the import menu. I import my clip and it tells me that it's imported 120 minutes of video but when I click on the new event there's only 48 minutes of video. Where's the rest?

Tihs is not likely to be happening because of anything on your system (the pattern would be a bit different usually.) This happens because the hardware is dropping frames that cannot be properly translated.
Analog tapes may often contain spots where the magnetism is weak, the tape is stretched, warped etc where the signal that is read off of it when sent from the VCR incorrectly. The reason is that the VCR doesn"t build the signal; it simply does a straight electronic conversion of the signal on the tape to signals on the wire. The problem is that in order for a computer system to understand it as video, the signal must adhere to a strict structure.
When the signal becomes out of order or a part of the signal drops out, a video computer will have a problem and will lose frames unless hardware is present that can anticipate and fill/repair the missing component (most commonly, time-base correction.) These bad signals don"t typically manifest themselves visibly on an analog monitor unless the defect is prolonged (such as distorted video at a bad warp on the tape or the bad video between multiple recording sessions) but they are still there and anything that is trying to compute data from those signals is going to have a problem.
The only thing you can do is try to clean the heads of your VCR or Camcorder using a cleaning cassette or try to run the video through hardware that can do video enhancement/time-base correction, which will repair the signal thus allowing it to be captured uninterrupted. Every time the signal is interrupted, the video processor and DV compressor will take about a second to sync up and resume capture and that is what you"re seeing in those drop-outs.

  • Batch Editing to Create Watermark on Multiple Clips

    Hi,
I have a bunch of clips that I am trying to apply a watermark to. I have my workflow currently set up in Premiere Pro but there is no way (that I know of) to apply a watermark to them all at once. Is there a way that I can do this in After Effects?
    Thanks in advance!

I feel like the first method I mentioned is your best bet. Here's a detailed workflow with more screenshots:
1.) Import all of your files including your watermark.  I think the best way to create the watermark is to use Photoshop.  First go to File > New.
.    Since my footage is 1920 x 1080, I used the HDTV 1080p/29.97 Preset as shown in this screenshot:
    A) Next to Preset: Select Film & Video
    B) Since the footage I'll be importing into After Effects is 1920 x 1080, I selected HDTV 1080p/29.97 next to Size:.  If your footage is a standard size then there should also be a preset that matches it.
    C) Finally set the Background Contents: to Transparent.
2.) When you're done making your watermark in Photoshop I would suggest saving it out as a PNG file.  PNGs will maintain the transparency, they're excellent quality and the file size is smaller than TIFFs or PSDs and my experience is this will help After Effects run more smoothly.
3.) Create a New Composition from Selection.
    A) Shift select all of your clips.  Then drag and drop them onto the Create a New Composition icon.
    B) This will open up the New Composition from Selection window.  In the Create box select Single Composition.
    C) If you are doing this with different sized clips it won't work.  Otherwise it will automatically be set to Use Dimensions From: the first clip you dragged onto the icon.  In this case Car L to R.mov is the first one I dragged.
    D) Since you're going to be rendering this right back out select Add to Render Queue.
    E) Then select Sequence Layers to line up the layers into a sequence within the composition.
    F) Finally, click OK. This will immediately add the clip to the Render Queue.
4.) Now you're going to want to set up your timeline, so click back to your composition tab.
    A) Drag your watermark over your clips and make sure that it extends to the end of your composition.
    B) Change the blending mode to Overlay.
    C) Hit the T key to activate the Opacity control and change the opacity to 25%.
    D) In this case the beginning of the Work Area is already set to the beginning of the composition.  But, in the future you can press the B key to set the beginning of the work area to wherever the playhead is located.
    E) Hold the shift key to snap the playhead to the last frame of the first clip.  Then press the N key to set the end of the end of the work area.  Note that the N key places the end of the work area immediately after the frame you're currently viewing.
    5) Then click back on the Render Queue tab.
    A) Click Best Settings.
    B) Click Custom.  This will open the Custom Time Span window.
    C) Since the render queue automatically recognizes where you have your work area set up, you don't need to do anything.  Just click OK and this will save your current work area position.
    D) Click OK again to exit the Best Settings window.
    6) Repeat the second part of step 4.
    A) Make sure that the playhead is showing the very first frame of the second clip and press the B key to set the beginning of the work area.
    B) Hold down the shift key to snap to the end of the clip.  Press the N key to set the end of the work area.  Then press Control Command M or Command Shift / to send the second clip to the render queue.
7.) Repeat Step 5, but rename the clip with it's actual name.  If you don't it will be fine, but After Effects will keep the same clip name and add numbers to ends of all your clips.
8.) Finally, I would recomend making an Output Module template.  To do this, click on the upside down triangle to the right of Output Module: and select Make a Template.  Then set up your render settings as you like and save them so you can select as many of your clips as you'd like and paste the same Output Module onto them.
However, if you're going to upload these clips to the Internet using Vimeo or Youtube for example.  I would highly suggest using Adobe Media Encoder.  After Effects is not designed to export the H.264 files these websites require and you'll get far better quality by using the Youtube or Vimeo presets in Adobe Media Encoder.
To do this, follow steps 3, 4 and 6 exactly as the screenshots indicate only instead of clicking Best Settings and setting the Custom Time Span in the After Effects Render Queue, click the preset setting under your composition in Adobe Media Encoder and set the Source Range to Work Area.
The only thing you have to remember when doing this is that you have to save your After Effects project each time you drag and drop the composition into Adobe Media Encoder.  Since Adobe Media Encoder communicates with After Effects through Dynamic Link, the project must be saved in order for it to update the current Work Area.
I've tested the above method and it works fine, but if you still have trouble with it, go back to step 3, import your clips as Multiple Compositions and add the watermark to each one.  Then save your After Effects project and drag all of your compositions into Adobe Media Encoder at once. Then shift select all of them and drag the preset you'd like to use onto the clips.

  • Can you avoid multiple clips of the same media in a project

We have 2 suites and we sometimes work together on a common project utilising the same media.
If I want to use a sequence from the other suite I can easily import it.
The problem:  it creates another folder with clips that only belong to the imported sequence.
The end result after a few imported sequences is that my final timeline has instances in it that
are from clips belonging to several different folders or bins even though the media is the same.
In summary... is there a way you can avoid having multiple clips of the same media in a project.
Makes for a very messy project when you have finished.
You've got multiple clips with the same name scattered everywhere.
    Cheers

    Not yet.
I'm kind of hoping this type of media management will be vastly improved in CS6, whose main new 'feature' reeeeeally needs to be outstanding network collaboration with other editors working on the same project.

  • How to import multiple DNG files into Premiere

I want to import multiple raw DNG files from a 2.5K blackmagic camera. Each clip is recorded in a separate folder:
I can import each clip separately by selecting its folder and clicking on a DNG file, but -for obvious practical reasons- I would like to import ALL clips at once. However, when I try to do so, Premiere does not import the clips. Instead, it imports each folder, and within them there is not one single clip, but as many clips as DNG files compounded that particular clip. In other words, if the clip had ONE HUNDRED DNG files, Premiere imports that clip ONE HUNDRED times, not just once:
In this image, each file contains the ENTIRE clip, not just a DNG file. Is there a workaround for this? Otherwise, DNG files must be imported one by one, which of course makes the workflow much more difficult.

Jim, when selecting the blackmagic2 level, the only available option is File Directory:
This doesn't happen with RED files, where you can choose between File Directory and RED from the first level. Unlike blackmagic's DNG clips, RED files can be imported all at once, so maybe that's the whole problem:
And yes, Source Settings are available for RED files, whereas they are not for DNG (only basic information, not raw manipulation):

  • Exporting multiple clips from one sequence as separate files.

    Hello fellow editors!
I have about 100+ video files that I want to cut into shorter clips, edit a bit and then export in a Final Cut friendly format (currently they are AVCHD mts files) to send it to my friend, who is putting the whole movie together.
I dont want to use Final Cut for this ( I cannot, I have a windows machine) and I was hoping to work with premier CC and media encoder CC.
There is a way of putting all clips in one sequence and then nesting each one, then you can send them to Encoder CC and it will render them as separate files - thats is just not very productive, nesting clips one by one and it takes forever for Encoder to import sequences.
I was wondering if there is a better workflow? I heard that Final Cut has shortcuts to do this very easily, you just click on all those clips in sequence and "batch export" them, which puts them in some place as separate, already cut files.?
Anything? I love premier, let my feelings be justified!)

    Kevin Monahan ...
Lucid George is right ... select one trimmed clip, File->Export->Media, you can choose whether in-out or entire clip.
Select MORE than one clip, you get a completely different export box ...
These two selections were "exported" from that bin created by dragging the trimmed clips from the timeline to a new bin ... I don't know what else one is supposed to do. You can't even select multiples clips and batch sub-clipping, which would at least cut the steps down.

  • Exporting multiple clips at one time

Hi, My school has asked me to convert old videos onto DVD media for archiving and for distribution amongst all teachers in my department. Yes I am sure some will mention legal stuff here but the videos are no long made and what we have is being held together with cellophane tape or cracking laserdisc videos (remember those?).
So far I have been able to import all the videos into iMovie. Each clip is about 1 minute or less in duration. I am now exporting one clip at a time into the requested WMV format but I can only export 1 clip at a time and I have several hundred to to. Is there a way to select multiple clips and export them one at a time without me having to select and export on clip at a time?
thanks in advance now back to exporting....

Never mind I am doing it one clip at a time. The school seems really happy about this since these video discs are no longer available for repurchase. Thanks.
