Importing to imac from JVC SR-VC30U Combo min DV/SVHS deck by Firewire

One step DVD would not work, but one should be able to play either min DV tape or SVHS tape in the $826 JVC SR-VC30U Combo mini DV/SVHS Deck and, via its Firewire, capture a DV video file into the imac, correct? (How is that done--does image capture recognize that a Firewire input is present, and give you options to start/stop capture?)Now, the combo unit output most likely is a 4 pin Firewire (IEEE 1394), and I think one can get a 4to6 pin adapter cord, as the imac is 6 pin Firewire, right?
Good source for such a connector?
I'll be mastering video to 90/60 min. min-dv tapes recorded in both a camcorder and the SR-VC30U, and would rather use the deck rather than my camcorder as the playback unit to save wear on the camcorder. I also have numerous video tapes, VHS and SVHS, that I like to get into my imac as dv. I can also back up the min-DV mastering of events with a SVHS tape, and import that SVHS footage if the min-DV recording fails. Might even be a way to get better footage from DVDs, by looping through playback, than trying to rip from the recorded DVD.
One might even be able to loop through video and capture dv to the imac--checking with JVC about that and related questions--will report back...
Regards, Dale

JVC never answered my email questions. iapps confirmed that my basic assumptions were reasonable, however. So I ordered the items.
I have received and worked with the JVC SR-VC30U Combo DV/SVHS deck and it appears to be a versatile unit. You can dub from one format to the other, record input to both formats, play either format and have DV/Firewire output, and loop through input to digitize analog video for Firewire input into the imac. Haven't tried recording DV in to both formats yet.
Looping through playback from a recorded DVD, capturing, imovie, idvd, to burned DVD looked much better than ripping the original DVD with Cinematize and doing the same.
You have to control the deck manually--imovie will not control the functions (play, rewind, stop, etc) as you have with most DV camcorders, of course.
I've also found the Panasonic PV-GS500 to be compatible with imovie. You have to have it in playback mode, not PC mode. Also, there was some flicker in footage ran through imovie/idvd to burned DVD, particularly in transitions were there was movement in the video at time of transition. Some of that may have been related to stabilization so I've turned that off to see if it helps.

  • Anybody have the JVC SR-VS30U Mini-DV/SVHS deck?

I can get data from tapes to Final Cut via the firewire connection, but how do I go the other way? How can I play the timeline and have it record onto mini-dv or SVHS vis the firewire? There must be a setting on the deck I'm not seeing? Thanks!
    (I dont have a manual)

    Shut everything down
As suggested, run your FW cable from the puter to the front of the deck.
Turn the deck on. Make sure the DV button is lighted. Use the remote control to select Input F-1 (its the Channel + key)
Fire up the Mac and launch FCE. Make sure you have View>Video Out>Apple Firewire (NTSC or PAL) device set.
That should give you output from the Viewer or Timeline into the deck. When using the DV deck you should be able to play/record or use the Print to Tape function
If you want to play/record to the S-VHS side: On the deck, make sure Dub is selected for DV ... with the arrow pointing towards the VHS side. Now you should be able to play from the Timeline and Rec on the VHS side

  • Newbie seeks advice on importing to iMovie from JVC Everio

    Hi there,
While I'm an old hand at the Mac - I really have little experience of AV applications and cams. I am very interested in buying a JVC Everio GZ-MC 500 or MC 200 Digital Media Camera, but just found out that I cannot import movie outputs into iMovie. Since MicroDrive technology seems like the way of the future I'd like to stick to the JVC. Is there any work around to this problem?
I have iLife 05 with iMovie HD installed and have just downloaded QT7 with Pro upgrade on the way. Does the MPEG 2 component solve this situation?
Any assistance to this would be a great help.
    Thanks and regards,
    Des

My experience with microdrives (..incidentally, Clive Sinclair used the name 'Microdrive' for the tape storage devices he sold for his original 1980s home computers ..about 20 feet of videotape wound into an endless loop in a teeny plastic housing, rather like a miniature 8-track cartridge ..they were also used in the ancient British ICL 'One-Per-Desk' under licence from Sinclair: those two slots along the top are microdrive slots.. Oops ..sorry; where was I..?) ..is that they're unreliable. CF cards are better. But how much video can you store on a CF card, and at what price?
Microdrives need a moment to run up to speed, and constantly starting and stopping them - as I've done with, for instance, a Sony F828 stills camera - I find that the drive gets confused about whether it should be saving or accessing ..and just stops working. Same thing has happened to me with a microdrive in various other devices. So I don't trust them any more. I've used various sizes (340Mb, 1Gb, 2.2Gb) and I always cross my fingers: some have stopped working completely; others have had to be reformatted as DOS, and then formatted as Mac HFS+ ..and I've found them to be more trouble than they promise to be worth. Imagine suddenly losing all your video after you'd just shot about 46 minutes' worth.. Weddings? Argghh! The bride and groom would be so disappointed ..and so would you!
There are various programs which will read MPEG-2 footage (..including the audio: iMovie will play the video 'natively', but often without the sound..) such as Streamclip. That'll convert MPEG footage into proper QuickTime, which iMovie can handle. So you could connect your microdrive(s) to your Mac, copy the footage, squirt it through Streamclip, then edit it.
However, be aware that the quality of the footage may not be as high as material recorded with proper miniDV (or Digital-8) tapes because of the nature of the Everio's recording/compressing/storing routine. The specification - on that page mentioned by 'L', above - shows that the Everios record in the same format as DV "NTSC (720x480) 4:2:0 PAL (720x576) 4:2:0" but - not having tried one - I dunno if the final appearance ..once the video's been 'unscrambled' from MPEG-2 format into something iMovie compatible, then saved back to tape or hard disc.. is as good as DV. It might be even better [..HDV hi-def is saved as MPEG-2..] but I couldn't say.
But DO be careful about microdrives ..ask a few Everio owners before putting down your money and buying one. And how does the price of a microdrive compare with a 60 minute miniDV tape?
Oh, by the way, I almost forgot: welcome to iMovie Discussions!

  • Importing MOB files from JVC HDD Camcorder

My JVC hard disk camcorder produces .MOB files. I can get Adobe Premiere CS3 to import the video by changing the file type to .MPG but it refuses to recognize the audio track for any of the types I have tried. According to the GSpot utility, the audio is in AC3 format.
I can import these files just find in Avid Liquid 7 but wanted to use (my newly upgraded) Premiere.
    Thanks in advance.

    Mick -
Just wanted to let everyone know that moving the DLL from the Encore directory worked a treat. I don't have Premiere Elements and had no idea which MainConcept plugin was the one I wanted - things seem to have become a little more complicated on that front from the last time I looked. Also, they ain't cheap!

  • I am using IMovie 11 with a new iMac.  Unable to import video from a Panasonic PV-GS400 mini-DV camcorder using a Firewire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter which is then connected to a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter.

How can I get iMovie to recognize my Panasonic PV-GS400 as a device so I can import video to my iMac?  I have a FireWire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to the camcorder.  Since my new iMac has only Thunderbolt ports, I purchased a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter to connect to the cable.  I also purchased a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to connect to the computer.  My camcarder is still not recognized.

I would suggest that you try a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable along with the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.
Those Firewire 400 to 800 adapters do not seem to work well with iMovie.
The 9 pin to 4 pin cables are available at reasonable prices here, for example.

  • Cannot import .mov files (from JVC HM100) into After Effects CS6

    Hi,
I am trying to import .mov files into After Effects CS6.  Unfortunately, when I try to import the .mov files, AE tells me "After Effects error: 210_0001_01.mov cannot be imported -- this '.mov' file is damaged or unsupported."  The file works in Premiere CS6.   I have the latest Quicktime, and even with Quicktime 7 Pro installed, I got that same result.  I would appreciate any advice on this problem.
    Thank you.

I'm going to set up a new sequence with just the clip I'm using after effects on.  I'm going to import that sequence into AE.
Your footage is currently a long-gop codec, which may be giving Mocha fits.  So instead of Dynamic Link, you may want to simply export the clip in question from Premiere using a lossless codec.  Remember to leave handles on the footage.
To get back to Premiere you would then render in a lossless codec.  It's not very handy, but it will get the job done.
Give it a try and see what happens.

  • Can't import MOV files from JVC GY-HM650U Camera

    Hi,
For some reason when I try to import an MOV into premiere that was generated by this JVC camera, I get an error:
" The file has to audio or video streams".
It plays fine in VLC player.  I tried converting it to MP4 using ffmpeg.exe.  Still get the same error.  I don't want to have to re-encode it using another tool just to bring it into premiere for editing, this makes no sense.  Usually premiere is pretty good about bringing in just about any kind of file.
We did recently upgrade to Premiere CC 2014, I never had this problem with the older version.
    Strange.  Any suggestions?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
What model of Kodak is it?
There is a discussion thread on this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11942367&#11942367
Try using a media card reader (sometimes built into printers) to see if that allows the import. Others seem to report having luck by importing the movies off the card using a different computer, deleting them, and then importing the pictures.
    Hope that helps.

  • Import to iMovie from JVC Media Camera G7-mg50E

the files out from Media Camera are .dot files
iMovie do not import this files.
How can I work with iMovie
Does exist some program able to convert such a file?
    macBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The Zi6 is not on the compatibilty list however I based my knowledge on this review at macworld.com
    http://www.macworld.com/article/135948/2008/10/kodakzi6.html
"To copy your captured content to the Mac, flip out the USB connector, switch on the camera, and jack it into a free USB 2.0 port. If you have the latest version of iPhoto, it launches and offers to import the separate video and image files. If you don’t have the most recent version of iPhoto, you’re welcome to import files into iMovie ‘08 with the File: Import Movie command, or into iMovie HD via the File: Import command. Each command produces an Import navigation window, where you can locate the movies on the attached camera (within the DCIM folder).
The Zi6’s movies are encoded in the H.264 format; as a result, there’s no need to install another codec to use them as you would for movies recorded with the Flip cameras, because H.264 is natively supported by QuickTime (and therefore iMovie and Final Cut Pro). Audio is recorded in the AAC format at 48 Kbps."
So this suggests iMovie 08 will accept the file format the Zi6 porduces. I will attempt file conversion before I loose iMovie 06 though.

  • How can I import Quicken Files from a G4 to a new iMac.

I need to transfer my Quicken 2007 files from my G4 to my new iMac. My G4 is running OS 10.4 and Quicken Essentials for Mac requires 10.5 or above. My G4 cannot run 10.5. My iMac is running Lion and I've heard if I load Mac Essentials on my iMac, I won't be able to import the files from my G4. Anybody have any ideas?
I've been considering making a copy of my system and applications folders on an external firewire drive, then connecting it to my iMac. I thne plan to use the external drive as a startup disk and load Quicken essentials on the external drive. Then, once eveything is loaded, I was hoping I could copy the files and pull them over to my applications folder on my iMac. Does anybody know if that will work?

I'm in the same boat!!! Been a long Time Quicken user and they finally made the software almost un-useable. I have 2 intel laptops in the house and a G4. The intel systems are both running Lion had I known the quicken conversion software dosen't run on Lion I would have converted all my quicken backups (going back to 1997) before installing Lion.
To answer your question, what I have found out is convert all your files on Lepoard then update to lion. The conversion software that comes with Quicken Essentials will work on Lepoard. Thats how I converted mine. But last week I needed to go back to and old backup looking for some transactions and found the Lion issue. Had to boot up the G4 and load the old Quicken software to look at the backups.
Been really thinking of switching to another product.

If they are the same nef files that you were importing into your PC, see if the reason is an error message like the thread above this one. Permissions issue.

  • Importing MPEG-2 .MOV from JVC into Premiere Pro CC

hi all, first post on this forum, i am josh.
down to business. i have been having trouble with premiere pro, i am tasked with editing footage for a promotional video for a college. the footage was recorded on two seperate cameras, first was a JVC HM100, second is a Canon 1100D.
now we have most of our footage, and i have looked through it when i was on a mac, but then we i went home to do it at home on my PC running Windows 8.1 and Premiere Pro CC, i tried to import the JVC footage and it says the Codec is missing. but when i import the footage from the Canon, it works fine, so i have to right codec to play mov. but as far as i know, it is todo with the JVC recording with MPEG-2. now converting the footage works, but it is extremely time staking and i think it is reducing the qaulity a bit. i just want to know if there is another way for me to fix the file and import it into Premiere Pro CC. or a different conversion method. i am using handbrake currently as i know the programme and i can change a lot of quality settings. i have a lot of little files to convert, it isnt a case of a few big files, its over 30 little files, so i would like a working queueing feature if i convert file.
    to summarise.
i can import MOV files that were filmed on a JVC camera but i can import files that were filmed on Canon camera, and i beleive it is todo with MPEG-2, that is what i gathered from other posts and forums.
thanks in advance for any help, i hope i gave you all the info you need.
    System stuff:
    OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit
Premiere Pro CC, latest, i have some other adobe programs such as AE, PS, and AI, as well as media encoder(which doesnt accept the file either)

  • Why does iPhoto not recognize the .jpg pics from a Kodak C875 now? I can stick my memory card in the iMac and import them that way, but iPhoto will not import the pics from the camera.

Why does iPhoto not recognize the .jpg pics from a Kodak C875 now? I can stick my memory card in the iMac and import them that way, but iPhoto will not import the pics from the camera.

There have been many issues reported with Kodak cameras - serach the forums for them
Actually the best practise is to use a card reader to import your photos, verify that they are imported ocrrectly and wait at least one backup cycle and then use the camera's format command to reformat the card and erase it - this assures no lost photos and always having the card properly formatted
