I have an old Sony HandyCam DCR-TRV230E camcorder, which comes with the ability to play all 8mm formats over firewire. The tapes I am try to import vary from Digital 8 right back to the old 8mm format. I have tried playing all formats with the same result.
The camcorder is connected to my new 27" iMac (3.4 GHz i7) and I'm trying to import the footage into iMovie 11 via Firewire. I have the feed from my camcorder (4pin-6pin) going via an extension cable (6pin-9pin) into my Mac. I know the 4pin-6pin cable is good as it connects to an old pc. The 6pin-9pin is brand new.
It seems that my iMac doesn't see the camera (About This Mac>More Info>Firewire just reports that the maximum speed is Upto 800 Mb/sec but doesn't list any devices) so could this be a cable issue?
With that said, looking at iMovie 11 support seems that tape camcorders are no longer supported, which I am guessing is why I am unable to connect to my old camcorder. Am I correct in this assumption?
If I got a copy of iMovie 9 would I then be able to import the video?

I had a Sony TRV230 and it worked well with iMovie, although I had to baby sit it sometimes, because the tracking would go out of alignment and I would have to restart the capture.
In your case, I would suggest that you get a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable. The adapters that you mentioned cause lots of trouble. You can find reasonable priced cables at www.monoprice.com, for example.

When I try to import from the Sony camera into iMovie 6, the screen shows that the camera is connected. Sometimes I get an image on the screen and I can always control the camera via the computer screen. But often when the video is running and the picture can be seen on the camera screen, there is no image (screen stays blue),and the time-counter no longs runs. But I can still always control the camera via on-screen controls. Bizarrely I will sometimes have a running picture on the computer screen and then I will fast forward and when I press play again, no picture. This never happens using iMovie 4 on my ibook using the same cables. any suggestions?

hi Matt again, yes I have tried these different manipulations. The blue screen is not due to the absence of filmed images; the camera is playing back the movie while the blue screen stays up, but as I say, I'm able to control the camera from the computer.
It makes no sense to me. I just had a session where it was working fine...I used fast forward and back and kept on getting an image. Put the computer on sleep and tried again and this time nothing. Pulled out the firewire connection, put it in again, switched off the camera etc. As I say, it works all the time with my ibook and iMovie 4 with the same cables.

Looking for help on importing video from Sony 120GB HDD Camcorder.
I recently purchased a new imac (1st mac) and imported the stored video on my Sony 120GB HDD camcorder. I would estimate that this is approximately 60-80 GB worth of video on the camcorder but when I imported this has become over 800GB on my imac and basically fills the HD.
My question is - is this normal or am I doing something wrong.

Unfortunately the video from the current crop of High Def capable cameras use a really highly compressed file format to save video. The one most used is called AVCHD and it can really save a lot of space ON THE CAMERA if you like to shoot at the highest resolution. However to edit that video, it needs to be decompressed so that iMovie can preview it, and edit it accurately down to the individual video frame level (1/30th of a second). So the short answer is you're not doing anything wrong, those video clips can expand up to 40-75GBytes per hour of video after they are imported into the iMovie Events folders. However it is entirely possible to store the iMovie Events folders on an additional external hard drive. And that's usuallly the best solution for anyone quickly running out of space.

Sony TRV22E - CAN ONLY export the VIDEO material via a FireWire Cable (iLinc)
Then Your Mac need eiter
- a FireWire port - or -
- a Thunderbolt port
if only Thunderbolt - Then You need a FireWire to Thunderbolt converter.
The USB- can only copy over the Still photos You also cam take with Your Camera. Will NEVER work for Video Export.

I have an A55 as well and iMovie 8.0.6 and can not import the AVHD movies. When I look into my Kingston SD card I get a directory with 5 folders, AVF_INFO, DCIM, MISC, MP_ROOT, and private. In private there is a folder called AVCHD, in which there are 3 folders, AVCHDTN, BDMV, AND IISVPL. In BDMV there is 3 folders and two files. The folders are CLIPINF, PLAYLIST, and STREAM. In STREAM there are the .MTS files. I have tried importing them, importing STREAM, and importing BDMV, all without success. Do you know what I am doing wrong, do I need the new iMovie, any other ideas ?

I just bought a related Sony camera, the DCR-SR220. I am still trying to figure out the optimal way, but have been able to see it on my imac by
1) installing from Apple Software site Quicktime mpeg-2 playback component (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/) and
2) installing MPEG Streamclip (www.squared5.com)
1) Via USB I hook up my camera and it shows up as a harddisk. I then boot Streamclip and open the file(s) I want to open from the camera. This can take substantial time.
2) Export as a Quicktime file (.mov)
3) Open up the .mov file in iMovieHD and edit there.
If you know of any better way, please let me know.

IMovie '08 crashes when importing movies from SONY DCR-SR52

Hi there! I am getting crazy because of this....iMovie keep crashing when iMovie creates thumbnails in order to import the movies from this crapy Sony DCR-SR52 (SD) camera. I removed Perian component from QT, started iMovie after I connected the camera...the same.....after 3-5 minutes iMovie crashes....
Any idea? I dont want to use the MPEG Streamclip solution.

For what it's worth, I have been having problems importing video from iPhoto to iDVD in the iLife'08 and also could not select video from iPhoto into iMovie '08 for an iDVD project. Apple technician took all my video clips out of iPhoto and put them on desktop. IDVD '08 is filled with problems, including green screens that replace transitions if using iPhoto photos and video to make slideshows. However, I somehow found in my applications file an "IMovie-previous version"('06) and used it to prepare a slideshow from iPhoto, using video clips from desktop, then "shared" to iDVD '08 tp pick a new theme and it burned perfectly.
The iMovie version '06 is so much easier to work with and I can avoid the glitches of iMovie'08 that prevented me from importing video. By preparing movie, you can avoid using the transition window in iDVD'08 -- transitions that don't work. Forums on iDVD are filled with people having the same problem and we hope Apple will find a fix.
If you have'08 and want to revert to '06, there is now an Apple software that will allow you to do that- just offered, to allow people who especially are not interested in YouTube and more interested in sharing with family and friends for TV viewing.

You will need an analogue to digital converter such as the ADVC110 (there are others) that connects to the camera via RCA cables and to your Mac via Firewire. You can then import into iMovie.

Can't import videos from sony

I can't import my videos from my sony dcr-hc40e, from iMovie4 I can command the cassette but when I import the videos all I see is a blue screen and on the camera display is written dv-in. I have used the camera other times and made dvd's but now i cannot do this anymore. I tried to find in the camera's settings something, but no success. Could it be my firewire cable? it seems to work only one-way, from my mac to the camera. Help, I have to make this video soon!

Importing miniDV from Sony DCR-TRV25 to iMovie '11?

Have an old Sony DCR-TRV25 miniDV that I have been struggling to import wedding video. Currently have a MBP (early '08 I believe) with OSX 10.6.8, with iMovie '11 (9.0.4). I'm using the FW, connecting with a 4p to 6p adapter (there looks to be a 9pin port also, but never tried a 4p to 9p adapter). I have yet to get the camera to show up for import when connecting, and have tried other previous searches to "force" the import. I've read that Final Cut Pro X may work, but being only an amateur I'd prefer to not spend that much on software for this older camera (have a newer Sony which works well with iMovie). Anyone have any other suggestions that might work? I'd like to be able to import quality video if possible (also read the quality was poor on some who seemed to get it imported from similar Sony lines before and they reverted to either iMovie HD6 or Final Cut versions).
Would love to be able to simply import myself, but if no solution seems available will just resort to farming it out locally to some business if I can find it.

This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.

You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconnect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

Unable to import video from Sony deck

I've been using FCE HD3.0 for well over a year with excellent results. I got tired of wearing out the heads on my camera using it to access footage so I broke down and purchased a Sony HVR-M15U editing deck. I'm able to control the device from the desktop quite well. However, every time I click the "capture now" button to import video, I get a gray screen overlaying the desktop and at the bottom it says "Allocating disk space" and my external drive(which has plenty of space) whirs for at least 3-4 minutes, after which I get another message stating, "Waiting for timecode. Device must be in VTR mode when device control enabled." This despite the fact that underneath the viewer, it states "VTR okay." I haven't been able to import a thing. Any ideas? I'm using OS10.4 with iMac G5 with Power PC chips. Thanks.

Does the deck have a Master/Slave setting?. Switch to Slave mode if so.

Importing video from Sony Hard Drive Camcorder to Powerbook G4 17"

After some work, I have found that I must use both QuickTime and MPegStreamclip to import both video and sound. However, once the transfer is complete I notice in playback that when the suject moves quickly the edges appear jagged and unclear around the body movement. How can I correct this?
The camcorder does not use firewire only USB transfer or AV. The video is beautiful except for this.

The only thing that I can think of is purchasing a video capture box such as a Formac Studio DV and plugging the camcorder into the Formac using AV output cables and then importing through the Formac's firewire port. Does that make sense?

I have an older sony handy-cam, model DCR-HC20, that I wanted to transfer video from to my imac for editing/storage...also, I have a new project I am working on. So, the handy-cam has usb and fire-wire, but my imac doesnt recognize it when plugged into usb, and no fire-wire port on the imac...I looked at Sonys website to see if there was software for my setup, but it doesnt look like it. How do I get my old videos onto my imac to archive, and for future projects should I invest in a newer HD cam, more compatible? THanks, E-

The version no: as iMovie is a bit confusing..
if your iMovie is not the lastest version(11 or 10.).
Is one from sort a. and the other from sort b.
iMovie HD6 - was version 6.x.x (and previous follow this) (one set of iMovie 1 to HD6)
iMovie'08 = version 7.0.x (a totally new product - Wrongly named as iMovie and should have version no: 1.0.x)
iMovie'09 = V. 8.0.x
iMovie'11 = V. 9.0.x
iMovie'13 = V. 10.0.x
