In a new window, only the new tab opens.

Windows Vista, Service Pack 2, 32 bit, FF v 5.0.1. I uninstalled tab utilities extension and changed an option in tabs and now can go to another tab if I switch to it immediately. If I load a tab from a link and try to switch when I'm through reading the first one, the tab will highlight, but the address bar and the page are still on the first tab.

If you have tabs on top and no menu then the tabs are in a "Windows" area so there is no space to right. If you put tabs back to the bottom you will have most of your old behavior but because of the changes to tabs on top most of the tab context menu stuff all of the context menu part was lost except the customize toolbar stuff, double-clicking on an empty spot was restored, and eventually during the FF 4 beta most of the tab extensions Firefox messed up eventually worked again except in the area to the right of the tabs.
The Windows part of that double-click has to maximize or restore to normal,
and you have to be able to drag the window by it;'s title bar.

I use playlists a LOT to organize my music. It is extremely important to me to be able to open playlists in their own wondows. I am upset to see this feature removed. Please enable this functionality as soon as possible.

Dragging an existing tab to the desktop (or below tab bar) does not open that URL in a new window, only a new window with an empty tab. FF4 RC2 (did it with RC1 as well).

When I drag an existing open tab from the FF4 tab bar onto my desktop, a new window opens as expected but the tab within that window does not load the URL of the tab dragged from the previous window. The tab menu item "Move to New Window" does the same thing as well.
I have disabled Tab Mix Plus add-on but it has made no difference. Is there a setting somewhere that I am missing?

I use Tab Mix Plus and do not have that problem.

FF4 wont move a tab to a new window. The new window opens fine but the existing tab stays on the current window. What's wrong?

I just upgraded to firefox 4. I'm using session manager extension.
I have multiple tabs open in my firefox window and I want to move some tabs to a new window. I followed the support guide which tells how to do this, however, when I drag the tab off the current window, the new window gets opened as it should, but the tab I was trying to move stays in the current window and does not get moved to the new one. Any ideas what the problem is?

How can you open a new window in the new iTunes 11 ???

In the old version, you can open a list in a new window. But I don't find this option in the iTunes 11 -.- Can somebody help me ???

This is what I always use. You can also click on the plus sign at the far right, that will also give you a new tab/window. And if you want that tab to be a separate window, then once you've created it, just go up to that tab (avoid the little x that will appear--that deletes it), click on the tab, hold and drag it down. Firefox just updated to V21 now I can't right click to "open in new window" only "new tab" or "new PRIVATE window"

Because I'm a bit of a dinosaur I don't use tabs, preferring to use new windows instead. Since the upgrade to V21, when I right click I don't get offered the option to open in a new window, only a new tab or a "private" window. How do I get back to choosing "non-private" windows ?

That is how it works. Current Firefox version make you close and restart Firefox after toggling the History setting that changes Private Browsing mode.
In permanent mode you can only open new PB mode windows.
Future Firefox versions will support Private Browsing per tab, this is already available as an extension.

The Firefox menu button gets purple or you get a purple PB mask on the menu bar or tab bar (Linux) if you are in a PB tab and all Private Browsing mode tabs get a dashed underlining unless you are in permanent PB mode.

My tabs are seperated into groups. Once I accidentaly opened a site in a new window (not a new tab). After that, I accidentaly closed the Firefox window with all my grouped tabs. Now, I can't recover it. Are there any solutions?

I have my tabs seperated into several groups (for example, bank tabs, music tabs, social life tabs and so on). I do this with the help of the button in the top left corner. While I was surfing the internet, I accidentaly opened a site not in a new tab (as I usually do), but in a new window. The new window was without all the grouped tabs, which I had in the previous Firefox window. And then I accidentaly closed the Firefox window with all my grouped tabs. Now I can't recover it. Are there any solutions?

Please log off and log back in to your machine and the issue should be resolved automatically. In case that does not work, please manually run the msi installer posted here (may require reboot).

New Window from "FILE- NEW-WINDOW" duplicates all the currently open tabs in the new window. I want new window with just the "Home" tab please?

Running Firefox 3.6.13 on 64Bit Win7.
I like to group tabs on a topic in a window, and when the tabs get to be too many, or a new topic, I do FILE->NEW-WINDOW and expect a new window with just one default (Home) tab. Instead I get a new window with ALL the tabs of the first window.
I have checked all the Options I could find. Nothing helped. I CAN make a new Window with just one tab if I right-click a link and say "Open in NEW Window".

A new window should only open with the home page(s). 
If you see differently then you need to check your extensions.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

There is no plus sign and going into optins and changing settings has not worked. I have uninstall FF and reinstall-keeping my personalization-and that was no help.
Right clicking on FF Icon to open a new tab, or going up to FF drop down tab and clicking on new tab both do not work.
Help everything opens a new window not a new tab. there seems to be no way to reset this or to chose a different optin. I just downloaded new tabs at end addon and it didn't do a thing.

as a first troubleshooting step - does it work like normally when you open & run firefox in [[Safe Mode|safemode]] by pressing the shift key while you open firefox (all other instances have to be closed before)...

Having multiple tabs open in one window, and then opening a new window and closing it, will close the newly opened window, but it will want to close the other original window with the multiple tabs as well.

This only happens if the original window has multiple tabs, and the new window has only ONE tab at the moment you close it.
Also, the problem only occurs when TWO windows of firefox are open. So opening up a 3rd window, and then closing it, will not give you any problems. The interaction occurs between two windows of firefox only.

This can happen if you drag a tab slightly down in the browser window while clicking.
Firefox has a feature called tear-off tabs
You can detach a tab from the current window and open it in a new window by dragging a tab in the browser window.
You can also do this via the right-click context menu of a tab: Move to New Window
You can drag that tab back to the tab bar in the original window to undo that detaching.

Firefox 4 on mac 'snow leopard' (10.6.7) won't open new windows - only tabs

I upgraded a couple days ago, and just noticed that I cannot open a 'new' window, only tabs in the original window that opens when I initially click the FF icon. I've tried both command-N and clicking file/new window from the menu. If I right-click a tab and select 'move to new window' the tab just goes away - no new window appears. New tabs open without an issue. I've rebooted, but it doesn't help.
I'm running macbook pro 13", 8g ram/1t drive - shouldn't be resource starved. Doesn't appear to matter what else (if anything) is running. The only plug-in I've installed is Adblock.
My previous installation (3.something - was current) 'lost' all my plugins somehow - they showed in the list, but wouldn't run; I removed them all but it wouldn't let me re-install any (I forget the error). That seemed to all get fixed when I upgraded to 4; adblock installed and runs like normal. Not sure if there is any relation, but thought I'd mention it.

I have this same problem. Firefox 4 on 10.6.7 on a 2009 unibody Macbook Pro.
I've noticed that I only have the problem when I'm using multiple monitors and my Firefox 4 window is to the left of the Mac OS X Menu Bar.
My typical arrangement is: laptop monitor with firefox 4 window TO THE LEFT OF external Dell 24 inch monitor with Mac OS X Menu bar.
Moving my Firefox 4 window to the external monitor allows me to open a window.

Firefox 4 was set on "Open new windows in a new tab instead." I unclicked that to test opening in a new window. Decided to go back to the tab option, clicked on it but it does not engage and Firefox 4 continues to open in a new window. Is this a glitch?

I did try rebooting, no go. If anyone knows a way to get that option working, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had the same problem, but was able to fix it somewhat.

'Open New Windows In A New Tab' is not working when the popup is invoked by Flash

I surf a lot of porn sites. And some of them invoke a popup if you click the play button of their Flash player. Even though I have FF set to 'Open New Window In A New Tab', this isn't working if a window is invoked by a Flash object. For example, if I want to watch porn clip on tnaflix.com and click the Play button, then a popup window of livejasmin.com comes up. But it doesn't open in a new tab. It opens in a new window, even though I've set the above mentioned option. This is very annoying. Please, fix it.
