In Disk Utility, WHERE is "Volume Scheme List"?

In Disk Utility, I need to change the "Volume Scheme" from the Volume Scheme pop-up menu, as listed clearly in the Disk Utility help files, from whatever it is now to a "GUID Partition Method." (Mac OS X 10.8.4)
But when running Disk Utility, THERE IS NO Volume Scheme pop-up menu!
I've tried everything I can think of to get it to work as the docs say: I can dismount the drive in question, or eject it, but neither of these options helps. ALL ITEMS in the Partition dialog remain grayed out except for making a second partition. I need ONE partition. But the so-called "Volume Scheme pop-up window" is NOWHERE to be found.  :-(
I am screwed until I get an answer to this problem.
What do I need to do to get Disk Utility to work as described in the Disk Utility docs?
Thanks for any assistance.

Then boot from your backup drive if you can instead of from an installer disc. Once you've partitioned and formatted the new drive you can clone your backup to it:
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
         button.
     2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
     3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
     4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
         to the Destination entry field.
     5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
         the Source entry field.
     6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new drive. Source means the old drive.
If your backup was is a Time Machine backup using Mountain Lion 10.8.2 or later, then it should be bootable using OPTION booting:
Boot Using OPTION key:
  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
      "OPTION" key.
  3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
  4. Select the desired disk icon from which you want to boot.
  5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

  • Macintosh HD won't boot, but disk utility says "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK." How do I repair the hard drive?

I have a MacBook that needs its internal hard drive's Macintosh HD partition repaired, as the boot screen freezes on startup.  I am running a separate, working mac OS from an external hard drive in order to run disk utility and repair the MacBook's internal OS.  The issue is, it has dismounted the internal Macintosh HD partition, and won't remount. And in addition to that, the Verify Disk option returns with, "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK." I've run Verify Disk and Repair Disk a few times, all with that same result.  And the internal OS still won't boot.
I have attempted to make a disk image of the internal Macintosh HD partition and save it to my external hard drive so I can wipe the internal hard drive clean and restore the image, but I receive errors when trying to create the disk image, and when trying to erase the hard drive (I know, I should try to erase the hard drive when I haven't made an image. When I tried to erase the hard drive, the image wasn't done and I thought it was. I got an error for erase, and I got an error for making the disk image)  I have tried making a disk image multiple times and haven't been able to create one.
There is also a boot camp partition on the internal hard drive which is of no importance as to whether it stays or is erased.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Disk utility not showing volume

I was having boot issues on a mac mini running OS 10.5 so decided to boot off the DVD and run Disk Utility. When Disk Utility came up it listed the hard drive and the DVD drive but it did not list the volume under the hard drive. This means the volume could not be selected thus all the repair/verify buttons are grayed out. Any next steps? Would rather not have to erase the entire drive.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    James,
I don't know for sure but looking into TestDisk may be of help to your situation. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk It claims to be able to restore a bad partition table.
    I hope that helps

  • DISK UTILITY - WHERE DO I FIND IT?

I have a Mac mini. I need to run the disk utility. The mini was bought with OS X 10.4 installed and come with a disk to upgrade to 10.5 which I did. I now need to run Disk Utlity but the original, 10.4, start-up disk asks me to decide if I wish to revert to 10.4 while the upgrade disk looks as though it is going to re-install 10.5.
How and where can I access Disk Utility?

    Steps for using Disk Utility
    1. Insert your Mac OS X Install DVD, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.

  • RAID 5 and Disk utility problems - wrong volume size for formatting

    Hi ..
I seem to have an odd problem with setting up our new RAID 5 solution. We just bought the SR6600 with seperately bought Western Digital 750Gb servergrade SATA disks.
Through the console I configured the RAID set to be RAID5 with a total capacity of 2750Gb and with a volumeset of 3000Gb (4 discs capacity and 1 disc parity).
    Here's the problem:
When I'm trying to format the new volume for HFS+ usage, I open Disk Utility and it shows the volume, but the capacity is only 750Gb - similar to 1 disc's capacity. I find this odd and I've searched all over the net for a solution and answer.
Please advice if anyone know of any management software, explaination, etc.
    Much appreciated, thanks!

I've run into the same issue with a newer PPC XServe. However, after I tried to reformat, I still only show up with the orginal size, and not the new size, even after I restarted the server and XRAID.
Did you have any success with your reformat?

    disconnekt,
If you are doing this over wireless, then yes, it's going to take quite some time. Anytime I have to run DU on my TC I connect it first to my Mac via ethernet - Much quicker.
You could try stopping it, and moving it to ethernet and then restarting the repair process over again.
Count on having to reformat the drive though if this does not work.
    *Reformat the TC Hard Disk*
You can reformat the hard disk in the Time Capsule.
Go to Airport Utility --> Manual Setup --> Disks --> Highlight "Time Capsule Disk" on the left --> Click "Erase" on the right.
Rename the disk and select the level secure erasure. You're done and ready to begin backing up again.
I would suggest connecting the TC directly to your Mac via ethernet. Your initial full backup will go much faster and doesn't fail nearly as often as trying to do it wirelessly. “If you have an Ethernet cable, you can perform your first backup to your Time Capsule via Ethernet; this will allow for the fastest initial backup especially with client computers that use 802.11b or 802.11g.” http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1176
    Hope this is helpful.
    Cheers!

  • Airport Disk Utility- where is it?

    Hey gang-
I just bought an external USB drive to connect to my new Gigabit Airport Extreme, so experimenting with AirDisk for the first time. I kept seeing references to "Airport Disk Utility" in some messages, but I realize now I don't have it. I'm running Leopard 10.5.6 and the latest Airport Utility and Airport firmware. I looked in my Utilities and Applications folder and searched Spotlight as well. I ran the Airport installer disk as well when I first bought it. I definitely don't have it.
So where exactly is Airport Disk Utility supposed to come from?
    Thanks!
    Dave

OK, so that answers one question. I just bought a USB hard drive and have connected it to my Airport Extreme and it was not automatically mounting. Found articles in Apple Support directing me to this utility which did not exist on my computer (Macbook Pro).
So, is there a way to get this to automatically mount? I was able to manually mount it via finder/go/servers, then inputting the address as 10.0.1.1 and selecting the desired partition.
What I did with the drive was first connect it directly, then I partitioned it using default settings (Extended/Journaled, I believe) and what I'd love to see is one of the partitions automatically mount when I am connected to this network. Is that possible? I’d rather not have to do it manually every time.

  • Disk Utility - where?

I have a problem with my separate hard drive, how do I access (without a disk) Disk Utility? where is it please

Morgold, I've been using Himmelbar for years now. Check it out.

  • Disk Utility erased my volume, but it said it wouldn't!

I have a 250GB external hard drive that was formatted as Mac OS X Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled). I had about 144 GB of data on it. I have used started using Boot Camp and wanted to be able to use the external hard drive when running Windows, so I thought I would try creating a FAT32 partition with the empty space. I went into Disk Utility and set it up to add a volume of FAT32 with the remaining space, and when I clicked on the non-empty portion it told me the "volume would not be erased." Excellent. So I started the partitioning process, and lo and behold, my entire external hard drive is empty! I have two partitions now like I wanted, but the 144 GB partition has no data on it. What gives? Is there a way to get the data back without resorting to some data recovery service? This isn't cool.
    Message was edited by: gbuell

Well, I certainly will admit that possibility, but it seemed really cut and dry to me. I'm not sure what I would have missed. But oh well. I don't know much about data recovery - is it a "sure thing" that the files will be found, given that this just happened recently, or is there a good chance I won't get anything out of it?

  • Disk Utility Question? Volume needs repair

Hi ALL, I need some help. My system seems to be running slow, so I did a repair permissions - that was OK then I did a Verify Disk and got the message."First Aid Falled" -"Volume Header needs minor repair
    d.",1)
    S&M Hard Drive
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair " I have my Tiger Update disk but it will not bootup from it - not sure why? I do have my old install disk form my old iMac Version 10.1 - can I bootup from this disk and try fixing the issue? I would rather download something that's not expensive or free to help fix the issue. Any and all HELP would be GREAT!!!! THANKS Scott

Because the new software is insane. If there is a leading space on a line the line gets deleted. There's more insanity as well, but I would guess that's the problem with your post.
Anyway, your problem is that there is minor damage to your startup disk, which can probably be repaired. However, you can't repair the disk while booted from the disk. Boot from your install disk, then go to the menu and find Disk Utility there and use it to run the repair function, then reboot. If Disk Utility still can't repair the damage you need to buy a copy of Disk Warrior and use it.

  • Message from Disk Utility:  iBook HD "Volume needs repair"

I just ran the "Verify Disk" routine and got this error message: "First Aid Failed" because "the underlying task reported failure on exit".
In verifying my "iBook HD" volume, the following errors were reported:
    (1) "incorrect number of thread records" in the Catalog file.
    (2) "Volume Bit Map needs minor repair"
    (3) "Invalid volume free block count (should be 7719070 instead of 7719077)"
    (4) The volume iBook HD needs to be repaired.
I would have run the "Repair Disk" routine, but its button wasn't highlighted, so I couldn't do this.
    What to do now?
(by the way, the Disk Permissions are all OK)

  • No volumes in Disk Utility

    Dear Folks:
    I am working on a friend's 1 GIG 17" Powerbook with OS X 10.2.8.
My firewire drive will not mount on the desktop. No icon appears.
When I go to Disk Utility the pane which normally lists volumes is empty.
    What do I do?
    Thanks
    Raoul

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours could be the 10.4.5 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

  • Disk Utility can see my drive but not mount/repair a volume on that drive.

    Situation:
During a permissions repair on an external drive, the power went out.
Since then, it won't mount. It spins up, lights on etc, and the drive itself shows up in Disk Utility.
    The volume is greyed out.
When I select the greyed out volume and select INFO, I get:
         OWNERS ENABLED: NO
         CAN TURN OWNERS OFF: YES
I would think it was a permissions issue since the power went off during repair, and I'm hoping to force-repair permissions.
Tried Disk Warrior (v 4.4)... it mounted but I got this message (despite hardware being fine):
The directory cannot be rebuilt due to disk hardware failure (-36, 2747)
It's not a hardware issue; the drive is fine, it just won't mount.
    What I've done:
    Unplugged/replugged drive
Swapped out cables from a similar drive
Attempted Disk Utility on two laptops with same results
Booted from startup disk, ran DU, same results
    Ran Disk Warrior
The only way to get the drive to show up in Disk Utility is to open DU, then plug in USB. It shows up every time, but once I attempt something, I have to pull/replug USB.
I cannot make a disk image in Disk Utility.
I have another completely empty 3TB drive that I could back everything up to.
    Specs:
External drive, 3TB Western Digital, USB, HFS, no partitions.
    Lion, 10.7.3
Mac Pro, 6GB memory, Intel processor
Drive name "WD My Book 1130 Media", Volume "Big Boy"
    Suggestions?
    Any force-repair terminal stuff?
    Any software I'm not trying?
    Any tricks?
Let me know if I'm missing some helpful info; I've done screenshots of every message screen; two are included below.
    Thanks for any help!

    Try this:
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select the desired hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

I had to reinstall my OS X on my 2010 MacBook Pro after booting to a white screen that had a "?" in a folder flashing. I had to install on off an external hd because the computer wasn't recognizing my internal hd (factory installed). Once I was able to boot up (off the external drive) I opened up disk utility and the only thing listed is the external drive and a "SuperDrive" (cd icon next to it). Can anyone help? What happened to my HD? Thanks.

Either the internal drive has failed, Likely, or the cable that goes from the drive to the logic board has failed.
Replace the drive and test. If you still have the problem then replace the cable.
