In need of more vocal effects for garageband

I'm pretty new to garageband and love the software and the community of folks helping one another.. Thanks to all ahead of time for your assistance.
I was just wondering if there are any programs or locations online to download voice effects for garageband? I've looked and have found a few spam sites and a few sites with software but no faq's or any real explanantion of their product. So i'm asking you folks for direction with this one since one of you might've gone through this before.
Thanks again for your help.

look at these web sites.
http://www.mda-vst.com/
mda-vst has a series of AU you can use on your voice.
Detune is nice. Detune - Simple up/down pitch shifting thickener
Leslie is nice. Leslie - Rotary speaker simulator
I use them alone or in combination. Try their different presets or make your own extremes.
Forget about the Talkbox AU. It doesnt seem to work in GB but might in logic.
KTGranulator is a free delay line granulator.
http://www.koen.smartelectronix.com/KTGranulator/
It has many presets. Use your mic and talk or sing into each preset to see what you like. It comes with 40 presets.
Presets 6&7 will give you a metallic sound called metallic 01 & 02.
Preset 16 is called "Android". Try them all you never know. Try combining them with "Detune" or "Leslie"!
Monstachorus is fun. Try the presets or experiment with new ones.
http://www.macmusic.org/software/view.php/lang/en/id/3098/
These are just a few examples. Best thing to do if your looking for unusual ways to change your voice is to try them in every AU you can get a hold of. You just never know what you'll come up with.
also try the tremolo and phaser that come with GB, or even the drum and guitar effects. I like to use guitar effects for distorted voice effects.

  • Need help identifying vocal effect

Hello! I am a huge fan of obscure British 60's psychedelic and have been trying to mimic the vocal effects used on this song.
I'm guessing it would be a combination of delay through a Leslie speaker but seem to not be able to achieve the same results.
    http://www.photographicgun.com/tmp/the_moles.mp3
Please let me know the steps in recreating this effect.
    Thx!

It's probably a bunch of guitar pedals and amps on the original. Certainly there's trem, distortion, a kind of phasey/flangey/pseudo-vocodery effect there.
I'd probaly pick out a vocal chain including a middy-sounding EQ, chorus, ensemble, the EVB3 rotary effect, and GuitarAmpPro, and see how far you get...
Nice to hear that track again, BTW...

  • What vocal effects for a metal scream???

    Hello!
I am an aspiring death metal vocalist who wants to record some stuff just for fun. I recently heard that garageband has stuff like vocal compression and reverb, which I had previously heard a lot of death metal bands use on their vocal tracks.
My question is, what type of vocal compression, and what settings (ie how much reverb, so on and so forth), would I use to enhance my screams (note, not create, I can already do that with my voice naturally) like most bands do when recording their vocals?
    Thanks, and stay metal! :-]

    Hello MShinderman,
You pretty much said it - compression and reverb.
The type of compression and reverb matters. I personally don't like too much reverb on the type of vocals you're talking about.
With compression, you know, there's different sides of this argument, but you may find the best results from adding an outboard compressor before your vocals ever reach your computer, so they go in compressed (mic -> preamp -> compressor -> interface).
Assuming you just scream directly into the computer, there's a variety of 3rd party compressors that will do a much better job than what comes with GB.
The compressors in GB aren't really great for what you're looking to do, or at least I've never used them with screaming vocals all that well. Maybe with enough time and tweaking you can get what you want.
So basically, if you are going to stay within GB, simply add a compressor, and play with the settings until you're somewhat happy (you'll hear the vocals thicken up as you increase the compression), and then add some reverb (but not too much, or it will sound cheesy). Since you're just doing this for fun, maybe that's all you need. As they say, rely on your ears.
However, if you secretly aspire to be the next Mel Torme or similar death metal vixen, you may want to look at solutions beyond GB - either an outboard compressor or plugin from a 3rd party.
If you're looking for more specific advice, such as specific 3rd party plugs, outboard gear, reverbs, etc. you should probably ask the question at www.gearslutz.com. While not GB-oriented, it's a great place to field questions about techniques and gear.

  • Vocal Effects in Garageband 2

I am looking specifically for an effect similar to that created by running a vocal through a Leslie speaker.
Yes, I am trying to record a vocal for Tomorrow Never Knows and I haven't found anything close to the Leslie, yet. I am running Garageband 2

The plug-ins in Logic provide a greater control than those of Garageband, and they come with a price: you need to have some working knowledge of how things work in Logic. Several factors can affect your sound, ranging from where you plugged things in (routing) to what you have plugged in. The problem here is that you're simply plugging in something with a blind assumption that because Logic is a better piece of software than Garageband, your sound will automagically be better. There is no magic plug-in.

  • Need help with scroll effects for horizontally + vertically scrolling website

    Hi,
I recently came across a website that uses both horizontal and vertical scrolling where 1 scroll = full browser length move to the next section (as opposed to several rotations in a continuous motion of the mouse ball like the majority of websites). Please see the example here because I'm probably not explaining this very well : A Chocolate Bar, Restaurant and Shop for Chocolates, Fondue, Gift Boxes, and More | Max Brenner (http://maxbrenner.com).
I'm wondering if this effect is something that can be done in Muse and if so, how to do it. It's something I'm seeing more and more and almost behaves like a slideshow that can be controlled by scrolling.
    Thank you!
    Michele

    Hi Michele,
I am afraid that this is not possible out of the box at this stage, I will recommend that you post this on the ideas section over here, Ideas for features in Adobe Muse
You can, in the mean time, use some CSS to disable the scroll bar, preventing the partial scrolling of the page and disabling the mouse wheel scrolling as well, leaving behind only your navigation to scroll through the page.

  • Vocal effects in Logic pro 8

    Hi everyone.
My question is if everyone here noticed that the vocal effects in Logic pro 8 are not the same as in garageband 3... I mean I've been working for a while with garageband and the vocal effects of garageband are amazing.. especially the live performance one...but now I just Updated to Logic 8 and the live performance effect is sooo dry compared to garageband live performance effect... the same for all the other vocal effects... they're really dry..I don't know if its my software.. I'm simply sad with this...I Upgraded to logic to get better results and suddenly I see myself having this problem... Could anyone tell me if they have the same problem as me?? Do you feel that your vocal effects in logic are the same or even better than Garageband 3??
    Thanks...

  • Is it more cost effective to host SAP software at my university?

Hi! I'm connected to a major university that has a high quality hosting area of it's own. Is it more cost effective for them to host SAP software themselves or should they use the services of the UCC? If the value is close then they may want more control in their own environment. Or if there's greater value with the UCC's then they can use their budget and resources in a different way!
Thanks for any insights on the best-in-practice way to proceed!
    Best regards,
    Richard

    Richard
The answer to your question is that it is more cost effective to use an existing UCC hosting center as opposed to developing your own system.  For example, in the Americas the cost of belonging to the University Alliance is the same whether you use the hosting center or not.  Unless your current center can do all of the following for free:  Purchase required hardware, train your staff, install and support the SAP software. and provide help desk support to your faculty. then it will cost you more to do your own hosting.  The other advantage of using a UCC hosting center is that they can provide you the complete set of SAP products and they can create clients for use with the existing UA curriculum.

  • Need a more effective way to kill ipv6...

In a previous episode, I explained that I needed to kill ipv6. At one point, I did this by blacklisting the relevant module. After support was integrated in the kernel, I switched to using
    net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
    in sysctl.conf.
This has been enough for most purposes. It allows me to connect to my campus's wireless network, for example.
However, I've been having a separate networking issue (involving ssh) and in an attempt to make absolutely sure that my LAN set up at home was not interfering in any way, I tried to establish a direct, wired connection via my ISP's box (I initially wrote "router" but I'm not sure a cable modem is a router) rather than connecting via the wireless LAN. To be honest, this wasn't the bit I expected not to work. (I also didn't expect to enrage anybody by doing this but apparently I did even though I tried to hide under the piano as much as possible. That's probably not a relevant side-effect, though.)
    1) I expected wicd to handle this automatically but that didn't work. wicd has been a bit flaky with wired connections recently and I'm wondering if that flakiness is connected.
    2) Eventually, I just stopped wicd.service and got a root prompt.
    3) As I understand it, something like the following should work:
    ip link set eth0 up
    dhcpcd eth0
However, it doesn't. I can bring the interface up just fine but dhcpcd can't get a lease. I also tried passing the -f inet option to ip but that didn't make a difference. Examining the output and the logs, this seems to be because it repeatedly tries ipv6 but never falls back to ipv4:
    $ dhcpcd eth0
    dhcpcd[13128]: version 5.6.2 starting
    dhcpcd[13128]: eth0: sending IPv6 Router Solicitation
dhcpcd[13128]: eth0: sendmsg: Network is unreachable

dhcpcd[13128]: eth0: sendmsg: Network is unreachable
    dhcpcd[13128]: eth0: no IPv6 Routers available
    dhcpcd[13128]: timed out
This was pretty much the behaviour I saw before and ended with the line above in systemctl. It is also pretty much what I get in the log:
    Sep 24 23:19:48 <hostname> dhcpcd[13375]: dhcpcd not running
    Sep 24 23:19:50 <hostname> dhcpcd[13384]: version 5.6.2 starting

    Sep 24 23:20:20 <hostname> dhcpcd[13384]: timed out
Note that this is not a general problem with wired networking. If I plug in the ethernet cable for my home LAN (so I'm not connecting directly to the ISP's box but, rather, indirectly via a router which is part of my home LAN), wicd has no trouble switching to eth0, getting an ip address and letting me ping www.example.com. From the log:
    Sep 25 00:30:44 <hostname> dhcpcd[29164]: version 5.6.2 starting

How do I kill ipv6 support more effectively and/or tell dhcpcd to use ipv4?
Right now, I would love to scrub ipv6 from my machine - I have yet to come across a network which actually supports it. Indeed, having it around just seems to kill networking on every network I use. (Note: this is just frustration - I think it is quite good to have it available in case I ever find somewhere to use it. I just need to kill it off for all practical purposes so I can connect until that happy day arrives.)
I did see that some people have recently had some issues with Atheros ethernet although not precisely my version:
    $ lspci -s 08:00.0 -v
08:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR8151 v2.0 Gigabit Ethernet (rev c0)
Subsystem: Atheros Communications Inc. AR8151 v2.0 Gigabit Ethernet
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 45
    Memory at d0c00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256K]
    I/O ports at 2000 [size=128]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 3
    Capabilities: [48] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
Capabilities: [58] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
    Capabilities: [6c] Vital Product Data
    Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting
Capabilities: [180] Device Serial Number xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx
    Kernel driver in use: atl1c
However, I'm not using NetworkManager and I'm not seeing anything like the same error - I can bring eth0 up just fine. It is only the getting-a-lease bit where I hit trouble. (And it works fine on the LAN but not directly via the ISP's box.)

Is this the connection that you're talking about and having all the trouble with; connecting directly via the cable modem?
IME with cable modems, they do NOT provide router services (as you've hinted at). That includes NOT providing any kind of IP services - IPv4 or IPv6. They are purely a modem (modulator/demodulator) to translate between the ethernet side of the modem and the ISP's cable side of the modem.
With that in mind, I would not expect any kind of DHCP request to be responded to. The device connected to the modem (a computer or dedicated router) needs to perform the authentication etc to the ISP and establish a connection over the cable network first, via the modem. THEN you can make DHCP requests which the new connection will transport to the ISP to be honoured.
Sorry if I've misread what you're actually trying to do when you have the issue, and as I said, this is just IME. I could be wrong.
Thanks. That's not how this ISP does it. It did used to be that way but not now. Basically, the modem is authenticated. If you need a new one, a technician has to come out, install it and then call somebody to authorise that modem to connect to their network. There's no additional authentication done from the computer side of it. I've connected a computer plenty of times direct to the modem in the past and I've always got a lease. What's happening is that my computer never even tries for ipv4. You can watch it trying and it never falls back from ipv6.

  • Need advice Macbook Air 13" or Macbook Pro (use it for Garageband)

Being that I have other Apple devices now I am also considering an Apple laptop.  I went to the Apple store a few weeks back and was really interested in the Apple Macbook Air 13" model.
    My requirements are:
    - portability (even thought I will not travel with it much)
    - use it for personal email and browsing.
    - use it for work as well.  I work from home so I would use it in conjunction with my work laptop which is windows based.
    - Do recording using Garageband. (I find the iPad just doesn't have enough tracks)
    - Will also install windows on it for occasional use but for the majority of the time will run in the native mac OS.
    - I am not a big gamer anymore but may purchase the odd game now and then.
    - Don't intend to watch DVDs on it.
    - All my files are stored on a Windows Home Server setup at home so will access most files from my local LAN.  Therefore not looking to store a huge amount of data.
However one of the Apple Reps told me that I really should consider the Apple MacBook Pro instead as it has more power and expandability in addition to a bigger screen (15"). I seemed to be someone sold on his reasoning and was leaning towards a Macbook Pro.   I am not sure that having a bigger screen is a must have but maybe so for Garageband.
    Therefore it would between:
    Macbook Air 13", 8GB internal, 256GB Flash = $1599
    Macbook Pro 15", 8GB internal, 500GB drive @ 5400 rpm = $1899
And if I went with a smaller screen.
    Macbook Pro 13", 8GB internal, 750GB drive @ 5400 rpm = $1499
Is there someone out in the community that had a similar consideration before making your purchase?  Will I have performance issues with the Macbook Air? Any advice or things that I should consider.
    Thank you.

    1) I used to use BootCamp but switched to Parallels Desktop exclusively a couple years ago. I have a couple programs for work I have to run in Windows and a web app that runs only in IE. Parallels works for me, including when I have to use Access or MS Publisher. I use Mac Office and only keep Win Office for the few times I must access a Publisher file or use Access. Parallels gives you a month to decide so I'd say go for it and see if it works for you. The big advantages are being able to run Windows and the  Mac OS without rebooting and that your Windows virtual drive can expand as needed. With a 256GB drive you'll want to be very careful about not wasting space and with BootCamp you must allocate a partition which isn't always easy to resize.
    2) It depends on when you buy and where you buy. Apple's in store stock turns over very rapidly so a week or two after ML ships you should be able to get it pre-installed. If you buy online you are getting it straight from the factory so it should be pre-installed almost immediately. Other resellers turn over stock more slowly. If it isn't pre-installed you'll get instructions for how to download it. Lion was an hour download and 30 minute upgrade for me last year.
    3) Typically Apple supports its hardware with new OS upgrades for about 5-6 years. Mountain Lion surprised us by dropping a couple computers earlier than that but the determining factor for ML seems to be 100% 64 bit architecture and some graphics architecture. This site talks about what isn't supported. All 2009 models are supported.
    4) Every once in a while you run across someone complaining that his/her Thunderbolt-Ethernet dongles isn't working but I know of no one who has had trouble. I'm 100% wireless at home and mostly wireless at work so I can't say.
    5) I have a Samsung digital at home and an NEC vga external display at work. Two different dongles but... I came across a very old NEC (probably pre 1995) projector I couldn't connect to, that's the only problem I know of. I see lots of connection problems at work mostly due to issues between the keyboard and chair, not hardware or software.
    6) What is total performance? The truth about processors is that just about the time a processor is replaced by the next new thing software and language developers have caught up with the new technology. I waffled on the i7 and chose against it for my MBA. The speed increase doesn't seem to be that significant and I'll be replacing the computer in 2 years. When I replace my iMac later this year I'll go with a processor upgrade because I intend for it to last longer.

    Hi,
You actually tried to install photoshop 5.5 and got the message about it being 16 bit?
(usually it's only the installer that is 16 bit and the actual program is 32 bit)
Photoshop 5.5 should work on windows 7 x64 if you don't have more than 1 TB of free space on your hard drive.
Your sure it's photoshop 5.5 and not an earlier photoshop version.
You might try copying the folder that says photoshop off the cd onto your hard drive and then running the Setup.exe
Anyway, check how much free space your hard drive has and if it's more than 1 TB, then no use trying to use photoshop 5.5 because it won't work.
(photoshop versions before photoshop cs can't see free space on hard drives if it's more than 1 TB and would give a scratch disk full message if you try to run them)
