Inconsistant trackpad recognition of two finger click? ..

in safari every so often after using a two finger click to open a link in another tab
my trackpad seems to go wonky and refuses to recognize a two finger click, even though
the two finger scrolling works just fine. At first I thought it was only a safari issue
but once in that state the two finger click isn't recognized in firefox either.
Sometimes I can get it back by restarting Safari, other times I have to reboot my machine.
I've tried different patterns (thumb and little finger) with different spacing and angles (wide side to side, and diagonals etc) with no luck .. although I did notice that when in this state a triple finger
click (from one hand) then acts like a two finger click. I also tried washing my hands and wiping down the trackpad (eyeglass cloth) but nothing seems to work other than the safari/machine restart.
Because it first happened with my gmail I thought maybe it was a webapp thing but I also tried
all of the gmail cleanup suggestions (remove all google cookies, clear cache etc) but then I even noticed it after searching/clicking on the apple support forum links.
Unfortunately I can't quite figure out what starts the problem sometimes its fine for days and then other times it happens early after boot/safari start. I do keep my machine as current as software update allows.

forgot to mention .. when in this state it treats the two-finger click just like a single finger click.

  • Two finger click selects text but will not release it.

I have just upgraded from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11 and from Safari 3.0.3 to 3.1.2. A new problem has developed. If I two-finger click on a link in Safari, in order to select 'Open Link in New Tab' or if I two-finger click in a word to bring up the contextual menu the contextual menu comes up as it should. I can select anything in it I choose. The problem is that when I let go of the trackpad the link or the word remains highlighted. This causes me to have to click somewhere else, on blank space for instance, to release the highlighted text or link.
This happens in Safari. It does not happen in Camino. Also, if I bring up a contextual menu in Safari using Control-click the same issue happens. The text or link remains highlighted afterwards.
The biggest nuisance this causes is that as long as a link remains highlighted the mouse arrow remains an arrow rather than turning into a hand and finger when hovering over another link.
Does anyone else hear experience this or has anyone hear heard of it? TIA
    Greg

No, I think we are talking about entirely different things. What I am talking about is this...
For instance, I enter search terms in Google, press enter, it brings up a page of links.
I hover my mouse over one of the links and when I do the black mouse arrow turns into a hand with a pointing finger. I two-finger tap that link and select "Open Link in New Tab". It does. All is well.
Now, while still on that Google page I hover my mouse over yet another link.
If I am using Safari 3.0.3 or 3.0.4 that mouse arrow will turn into a hand with finger as soon as it hovers over another link.
If I am using any Safari version newer than 3.0.4 the mouse arrow will not turn into a hand with finger when I hover over another link. The reason is because when I two-finger tapped that first link the text of the link got "selected" i.e. highlighted. The mouse pointer is now locked into black-arrow-pointer-mode unless I tap the trackpad to release it from that mode.
In Safari 3.0.3 or 3.0.4 a two-finger tap on a link would not select the text of the link and therefore the pointer did not have to be released. It would immediately turn into a hand with finger as soon as it hovered over a new link.
So, why does this matter so much too me? It matters because many web pages have links on them that you cannot even tell are links until you hover your mouse over them, at which time the mouse arrow changes to a hand with pointing finger. If I two-finger tap a link to open it in another tab, and then I continue looking on that page for more links to tap, I cannot discover them. My mouse pointer arrow remains a black arrow even though it is hovering over a link. The reason it remains an arrow is because the first link I tapped selected the text that represents that link and my mouse is now not in the correct mode (mood?) to turn into a hand with finger. I can no longer identify links on that page unless I deliberately tap some place on the screen to release the selected text of that earlier link. The mouse pointer will no longer turn into a hand with pointing finger when hovering over a link. It will remain a black arrow until the text representing the previously tapped link has be released, or deselected.
Safari 303 and 304 did not select the text of a link when tapped with two-fingers. The mouse arrow was not being held hostage until it was deliberately released. Safari versions higher than 304 are a considerable nuisance due to this issue. It is very easy to forget to release the previously selected text and therefore it is easy to not even find more links on a page if they are the kind of links that the web author decided to make indistinguishable from the rest of the text in a sentence. Apparently the web author assumes you will suspect it to be a link and then hover your mouse over the text to see if it is a link.

  • Two finger click and control click no longer works in Finder

Starting today, I can't do a two finger click or a control click to bring up the contextual menu on a file or folder. Two finger click works everywhere else on my Macbook, the desktop, browsers, Office apps, everywhere except Finder. I'm running OSX 10.6.8. I saw a post on another forum that someone else has the same issue with the same OS and also started happening today, but no answers so far. I have rebooted my machine and no change.

Trash the plist file again but this time.....
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer and empty the trash when you reach the desktop.

  • Windows 7 in boot camp - two finger click and drag issues

Hey everyone. I have Windows 7 on Boot Camp (MacBook Pro mid-2010, Mac OS X Lion) and I cannot seem to click on a window with one finger, then use a second finger to drag it. Every time I try it brings up the right click menu. Is there any way of fixing this? I want to be able to drag, darn it! Thanks.
    Grant

Having had the same issue on my MacBook Pro with Boot Camp 5.0.5033 on Windows 8, workaround being external mouse, I have found the following:
If Trackpad->Two Fingers->Secondary Click is enabled in Control Panel/Boot Camp, in order to Click and Drag one cannot click any place on the trackpad. One must click bottom area of the trackpad with one finger, and then use another finger to drag.
If Trackpad->Two Fingers->Secondary Click is disabled, Click and Drag works the same way as in Mac OS X: one can click any place on MacBook Pro built-in trackpad with one finger, and then use another finger to drag the window or select a fragment of text. The two fingers Secondary Click, consequently, becomes disabled.
For me Mac OS X-style Click&Drag is more important, so I disabled two fingers Secondary Click, and assigned Bottom-Right-Corner of the trackpad to be Right-Click instead.
Don’t know if the question is still open… Hope, however, the info might be helpful to those having the same inconvenience with Click and Drag under Boot Camp.

  • Two Finger Right Click on late G4 iBook with USB Trackpad?

I learned that with OSX Version 10.4.7 it is possible to use the two-finger-click instead of ctrl-click for right-clicking. But this only works on the new Intel Macbooks/Pro. Well, this is nice.
For older Laptops with ADB-Trackpad there is a freeware program called iScroll2 which also provides this feature.
For the late 2005 G4 iBooks with USB-trackpads there is apparently nothing:
The feature doesn't come with 10.4.7 here and iScroll2 is ADB-only.
On the one hand I don't really get the problem here, why these machines are not supported.
Since there is no announcement from apple it seems that they are just not interested in supporting computers which have been sold till not even a year ago.
If Apple is definitely not planning to support this in the future I would at least expect that they publish the source for the USB-driver so that the open source communitiy can take care of the problem.
G4 Ibook, among others   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

have you tried installing iScroll? I'm pretty sure it
should work...by USB trackpad are you referring to a
trackpad plugged in to your USB port?!? (".)
Maybe I didn't explain it clearly enough in my OP:
The late G4 iBooks have a "Apple Internal Trackpad" which is a USB-Device, whereas older models sport an ADB-trackpad. In the late iBooks ADB is no longer present.
On the iScroll2 page (http://iscroll2.sourceforge.net/) you will find the following information:
"Models that have two-finger scrolling already built-in are not supported! These use a completely different, USB-based trackpad, the driver or which is not available as open source. iScroll2 is based on Apple's AppleADBMouse-209.0.10 driver for the ADB-based trackpads found on older models, which is available as part of the publicly released Darwin source code.."
So again: The feature mentioned in the topic is not provided by Apple, nor is the USB driver source code publicly available making it quite unlikely the OSS community will come up with a solution.

  • Two finger "right click" no longer works!

This morning using the two-finger click on my MBP 13-inch stopped working. It acts the same way as the one-finger left-click. I have rebooted the computer twice, reset the preferences twice, cleaned the trackpad surface... Nothing.
To say the least, this is annoying. The two-finger scrolling still works fine. I am now using an external mouse but I'd like to get the right click back without resorting to the control key.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

  • The letter keys on my MacBook have stopped working and the trackpad (or external mouse) are treating a single finger click as a double finger click

The letter keys have stopped working on my MacBook. Number keys and punctuation keys seem to work fine. Also, the trackpad treats a single finger click as a two-finger click. I tried an external mouse and this does the same.
If I restart, the mouse works fine but after a few minutes the issue starts. I have looked at a few forums and have checked the settings under system preferences but nothing jumps out at me :-(
    Any ideas???

Is this one of the MacBooks with a removeable battery? If so, try removing the battery and restarting the MacBook (obviously while plugged in to an AC adapter) and test to see if you still have this issue. Other users have reported that swollen expanding batteries have caused keyboard and trackpad problems.
If that isn't it, let us know, we'll keep helping you.
    Best of luck.

  • Two finger tap right click not working

Is anyone having a problem with two-finger tap to right click?  Two-finger tap to right click was working fine for a while, but it suddenly stopped on my Yoga 13.
I reinstalled the touchpad drivers, and it worked for a few days, then it stopped again.  Two-finger click still works fine.  So does one-finger tap to left click.

  • Lenovo Flex 2 14#: Two-finger-tap (right click) not working on windows 10

On my new Lenovo Flex 2 (AMD A8) i have upgraded to win 10 but i cant get the two-finger-tap to work. It dint work in 8.1 either. I can scroll in browser with two fingers. In the synaptics software the feature is activated but i doesent work. I have read some of the other threads about fixing the problem in win 8.1 but the registry files doesent have the same structure/names on my win 10. What to do?

I am having the same problem... It's very irritating to have to two finger click all the time.
    Is there a solution?

  • Two finger scroll problem

Hello. Today i bought a MacBok Pro and i've got a problem with the gestures. Every single gesture is working fine (one, three, four fingers and two finger click) EXCEPT the two finger scroll. I just doesn't work at all. Can somebody help?

I have exactly the same problem on my Macbook. Even the other two-finger gestures like turning pictures around in iPhoto or zooming in are working - it´s ONLY the scrolling that doesn´t work EVER. This is a pity, as it´s the most useful gesture imho.
Anyone else having problems or any solutions in sight?
Thank you very much in advance.
Oh, and if it is useful for the solution: I´m also having the click&responsiveness trackpad problems that are causing so much trouble these days.

  • Windows 8.1 two finger gestures not working

After I updated to windows 8.1 from  windows 8 yesterday, none of my two finger gestures are working. (e.g. two finger scroll, two finger click, or zoom) I tried updating my Synaptics driver and nothing has changed. I still can not use any of my two finger gestures. One finger scrolling is working properly but the two finger gestures are my favorite. All my gestures worked fine until I updated to windows 8.1...
Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this?
    Please help!

  • Two finger trackpad scroll doesn't work in Mac os 10.9

I just upgraded to Mac OS 10.9 and noticed that the little arrow buttons on the bottom of the scroll bar is no longer there.  So I looked into other alternatives to scrolling windows up and down and found that the trackpad has the ability to do so using the two finger scroll feature.  This would be great, except mine doesn't work.  Other trackpad features work, but the scroll up and down does not.  Any ideas to get this to work?

Use OnyX to clean your system and User cache files. It's free to download. Just click on the "Automation" tab, check the boxes and run it.

  • Two finger right click on g4 ibook

    Hi guys,
I just got an ibook g4 and was wondering if there is such an option or program I can download in order to be able to right click using two fingers on the scroll pad like the MB and MBP.

Sidetrack will allow the right click, however, I believe you lose your ability to two-finger scroll.
    The FAQ states:
Q: Does SideTrack support two-finger scrolling on MacBooks and late-model PowerBooks and iBooks (2005 and later)?
A: Two-finger scrolling is a feature of the Apple driver for the USB trackpad hardware found in Apple laptops manufactured after 2005. Installing SideTrack will override the Apple driver and switch the trackpad to SideTrack's features. Support for two-finger scrolling on USB trackpads is being investigated and may appear in a future SideTrack release.
So you lose 2 finger scrolling but SideTrack allows you to scroll single finger.

  • Windows 8.1 Two Finger Tap Right Click

So, for anyone who has upgraded to 8.1 and suddenly lost their two finger tap right click functionality, I highly suggest that you use this: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-enable-two-finger-tap-for-right-click-in-windows/.  It restores the functionality of the trackpad and does not interfere with the synaptics clickpad.  Just make sure that if your synaptics two finger scroll still works, you turn OFF that feature in the downloaded app.
Until HP figures out how to make their software compatible with 8.1 (which, if they're listening, SHOULD NOT BE AT ALL DIFFICULT NEARLY TWO WEEKS AFTER LAUNCH), this is an acceptable workaround.  Also, I'm sure many of you have already figured this out, but HP customer service is atrocious and definitely not worth your time.  If you ask them how to solve this, they'll tell you to restore your PC to factory settings and completely reinstall Windows 8.1.
I hope this helps anyone else who's experiencing this problem, as I only decided to post it after spending several hours fruitlessly searching for a solution.

On updating from windows 8 to windows 8.1, my Synaptics touch-pad lost the two finger right-click gesture.
Even after frustatingly trying to install-uninstall new driver software, problem didn't solve.
Finally I find the solution in registry entry:-
Go to Start > Run and type Regedit in Windows 7, or in Windows 8 type Regedit at the start screen.
    Once open navigate to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Synaptics > SynTP > TouchpadPS2
There, right click and select New, DWORD Value. Name the value '2FingerTapAction'. Once created, double click it and set the Value Data to '2'.
If '2FingerTapAction' is already there, double click it and set the Value Data to '2'.
On certain systems the registry folder where the "2FingerTapAction" key is located may be named differently. e.g. On Envy x2 it is called "TouchPadRMIHID2c".
Then log off and log on, and it should all work. Easy.
I hope the problem is resolved.

  • Two finger secondary click not working!

I have a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina. Brand new as of December 2012-
I have searched everywhere for a solution to this! I have solved the problem only for a few minutes at a time by entering a short script into terminal, but nothing has worked permanently. I can get the secondary two finger TAP to work, but I can't seem to make the click to work... And yes, the option is set to work.
When I log in as a guest, the feature does work, which seems to indicate that the problem is confined to my user account. Can anyone help? I would appreciate anything!

System Preferences > Trackpad > Point & Click
Uncheck all 4 boxes and recheck them back.
