InDesign conversion

I have a large quanity of InDesign cs3 files.  I have a new dual core MAC with InDesign 6cs.  I need to convert.  Can not fine  InDesign 4 ... what is available?

To speed up the conversion process, you can use my "Resave files script" — version 1.
P.S.
Following Peter’s advice I just wrote a script which batch-converts inx and idml files to InDesign documents.
You can batch-export to inx or idml format with these scripts.

  • PDF to InDesign Conversion?

Has anyone had success converting PDF files to InDesign? tested PDF2ID but formatting gets lost..

    Formatting, or styles?
PDF is a final output file format and doesn't retain style information, but the formatting applied to the type should remain. Since there is no style information in the PDF, all the text should, I think, be styled with no paragraph style or possibly [Basic Paragraph] and have local formatting overrides applied after conversion. That's the best you can hope for with what's currently available.

  • Quark to InDesign conversion?

Does anyone have any experience of Quark to InDesign convertor. I am not sure if there is is just the one, or more than one, such utility.
I would appreciate any feedback on which is the best product to go for; and whether it is worth the money.

If you don't want to buy the conversion software, there is a prompt service that will do it.
Here QuarkXpress files can be converted into Indesign files for a small fee, which will save you purchasing the whole conversion software for only a single file or so: link deleted by forum host

  • FrameMaker to InDesign conversion?

I have FrameMaker 7.2 and InDesign CS3. I have a few book projects in FrameMaker that I would like to convert over to CS3. However, one of them has extensive (hundreds) of cross-references (footnotes, basically), and the other has been indexed. I don't mind losing formatting, since I figure I'll be creating a new format in InDesign anyway, but I do mind losing the cross-references and the indexing.
Is there a way to import my FrameMaker files into InDesign that will retain cross-references and indexing?
    What I've tried:
I tried saving a test FrameMaker file as RTF, text, and MIF, but InDesign didn't recognize any of these formats. (Though text and RTF would lose my indexing and cross-references, I was trying to see if InDesign would recognize ANY format.)
I found a service online that charges rather steeply for converting from FrameMaker to InDesign, but that isn't an option.
Thanks in advance for any help that is offered.
    regards,
    Marina

But that tool didn't work with our test files. At the request of the DTP Tools folks, I ftp'd two of our archives. They acknowledged receiving them, but I haven't heard anything since. I'm guessing that these files are too complex for their filter. I should explain that these files began life as design-y Quark files, which were later converted to FrameMaker. So there are a lot of design elements you might not often find in FrameMaker documents.
InDesign table styles and table cell styles are very smart and offer more formatting options than FrameMaker, but InDesign doesn't sort tables, and doesn't have the FrameMaker column-width settings like "make current column same width as column x," or "make selected column(s) as wide as its longest text line."
Here's where I get really confused: ID tables.
In FrameMaker, the Table Tag contains the information about rules. But when I build rule information into an ID Table Style, nothing happens. I get no rules at all unless I ALSO specify rules in the Cell Style. What am I missing here?
Also, this business of associating cell styles and paragraph styles seems like an unnecessary pain to me. What am I missing here?
Also, ID doesn't make a distinction between the title block and heading rows, which is a problem for us because each of these elements is formatted differently in our tables.
Also, ID doesn't have the "table continuation" variable.
    Whew!  8-)
There's an InDesign table-sorting script (search Google) somewhere around, but I don't think anyone's yet created scripts for these other features.
As always, submit format feature requests at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform. The more requests they receive, the better chance it will happen sometime in a future release.

The DTP Tools' MIF Filter for InDesign commercial plug-in converts conditional text and cross-references.
It's not surprising that non-standard FrameMaker methods and techniques don't convert well with a tool designed for standard FrameMaker, so the workarounds to wrangle Quark originals into FrameMaker may be helpful to the DTP Tools folks to work with going forward. It's always OK to drop a note to follow-up on their progress with your files.
Yes, InDesign turns certain table properties over to cells. Not necessarily better or worse than FrameMaker, just different. One example is that FrameMaker's paragraph format Table Cell margin property is a Table Cell offset property in InDesign. That's consistent with InDesign's text frame offset property;  FrameMaker has no text offset property within a text frame that corresponds to this InDesign property.
FrameMaker table formats save the paragraph formats in the first row of table cells. When you create a new FM table with a given format, the last-created table's number of header and body rows, and table columns, are the initial suggestions; the first row of cells has the saved paragraph formats, and so do the additional rows.
True, InDesign tables have no title element. Using the paragraph in which you create the table for the title text probably will do the same thing as your FrameMaker table titles. Search Google for "indesign table continuation variable" without quotes for tips on emulating them.
You'll get used to the fact that these two products are different. One major difference you'll probably see going forward, is that the familar basic FrameMaker tool set that you've grown used to, isn't going to change markedly, even as its user interface, interactive-media options, outputs and frameworks like XML, DITA, etc, do change; compare this to InDesign's steady growth in technical-publishing features, release-by-release. The more you make use of the feature request form, the more likely you'll see some of your requests come to a future release.

  • InDesign conversion question

I created a manual in ID CS3, but now the person I created it for wants to be able to edit it himself. The only InDesign that we had for his machine (to remain legal, I mean) was ID CS.
I have saved my file as an InDesign Exchange file from CS3, then I opened it in ID CS2 and saved it again as an InDesign Exchange file, but when I try to open it with ID CS, it does not recognise the file. Ive tried importing it, placing it, exporting the original as XML and then importing it into ID CS, nothing seems to work.
I cannot stomach the thought of recreating this whole manual in ID CS!
    Any advice would be welcomed!

Make sure CS if fully patched to the final 3.0.1 (838) update.
And don't expect miracles unless you created the simplest of documents.
Any features in CS3 or CS2 that don't exist in CS will be lost or badly
    mangled.

  • InDesign conversion to swf--embedding movies, hyperlinks help!

    Hello, all
I am new to the CS4 experience and need some help. I have created a document and export to a .swf file. All works fine except the movies will not play and hyperlinks will not open. Is there a simple way to get the movies to play? As of now, I have quicktime files placed in the document.
How about the links? The cursor recognizes there are links, but will not open. Says some security settings need to be changed. I want to set this so viewers will not have to do this when they view the page. Any suggestions/recommendations are welcome. One request, please put in "dummy" terms so I can easily understand LOL Thanks!
Attached is the .swf created using InDesign.

The hyperlink issue: The links will work once the swf file is uploaded to a web server. If you would like to see the links work from your locally saved file, you will have to access the flash player global security settings. Then edit locations > add locations > browse for files and select your swf file. Again, a user will not have to do this if accessing the file from a web server.
The movie issue: Quicktime movies will only work in PDF export, not SWF export. Convert to AVI MPEG or SWF.
How are you planning to present the file: distribute file via email or accessible through web site? If it is a file to email, you could export to PDF and the only thing you would lose is the swf page curls.

  • 3B2 to InDesign Conversion

I have a 3B2 document with me. I need to convert the 3B2 document to InDesign. Can someone help me out to convert the document or is there any tool available on the website?

    Hi John,
I've been using 3B2 for more years than I care to remember. I still use it for a certain Journal. I switched to InDesign a few years back since 3B2 was no longer supported and the worry of hardware dongle issues. A real pity because it is a very powerful program and, as I recall, hugely expensive!
Unfortunately, there is no export option, however, 3B2 is an ASCII based program using visible tags and simply cutting and pasting from the ASCII (right hand screen), into an InDesign document works well. Then use Find and Replace  on those tags (<body>, <heading> and any inline tags &I; &R; etc.) to your InDesign tags. There are a very few anomalies which, off the top of my head, I can't remember.
I'm very rarely on this forum, your query was forwarded by a friend. If you need any further assistance please feel free to email me at [email protected]
All the best and good luck.
    John.

  • Indesign CS6 PMS conversion to cmyk

Hi all, CS 6 Indesign has changed the pms to cmyk colour conversion based on Lab values which creates a lot of problems for us. I have followed these instructions form adobe site yet when testing, in CS6 with a pms colour, for instance pms 485C, when converting within indesign to cmyk values, instead of getting what they are supposed to be which is mag 95, yellow 100, i still get wrong values from indesign conversion to C -7.32, M97.5, Y-100, K0.71
    Adobe InDesign CS6:
    Quit the application
From the folder Adobe InDesign CS6/Presets/Swatch Libraries/, remove all the libraries that have names starting with Pantone+
From any older version of Adobe InDesign (CS2 - CS5) copy all the Pantone libraries with extension .acb and place into: Adobe InDesign CS6/Presets/Swatch Libraries/
Similarly, copy all Pantone libraries with extension .acbl and place into: Adobe InDesign CS6/Presets/Swatch Libraries/Legacy/
    Restart your application.

  • Frame Maker document Format conversion to InDesign format

Frame Maker stores the authored document into binary format. My question is any Adobe Scripting/program guide to read the framemaker data and convert in a format which Adobe InDesign can understand.
I read an article that there is a MIF filter tool which provide such functionality. I love coding than using some prebuilt tool.
Is anyone has experienced anything related to converting existing framemake document using scripting/program to the format Adobe InDesign?
    Thanks

    Hi, Anil:
If the article you read was in InDesign Magazine, it's probably my review of DTP Tools's MIF Filter plug-in for InDesign.
The FrameMaker Software Development Kit (SDK) is one way to program FrameMaker. Framescript is a third-party tool that runs scripts on FrameMaker. There are some publicly-available Framescripts, and many commercially-available, plus a few folks who custom-develop
Frame's MIF (Maker Interchange Language) is open. Opening an FM file that was saved as MIF perfectly recreates the original; well, not exactly, because it does leave out almost all miscellaneous corruption and garbage, so it's better than the orignal.
FrameMaker 10 introduces scripting with javascript by using ExtendScript. Search Google for terms like "framemaker 10 sdk," "FrameMaker MIF Reference Manual," and "Framescript," without quotes for links to these tools.
In my article I mentioned that there are some FrameMaker constructs that cannot be converted exactly to InDesign, because InDesign doesn't have those features. True sideheads are one example. "Straddle paragraphs" that go across two or more columns are no longer missing in InDesign, where they're called "span paragraphs." If you think you can program true InDesign sideheads, more power to you! The MIF Filter does its best to duplicate the FrameMaker appearance in its InDesign conversions, but the behavior is different; this means that if you edit such "innovative" conversions, they may fall apart.
FrameMaker can export XML and RTF, which InDesign can import, so you may find that these formats are sufficient to migrate your content.

  • Indesign cannot open "old files" CS6.

I was supposed to do a few adjustments in a project, i have opened it before and been working in it alot.. (2 months since last time i was working with this project) When i was supposed to do some minor fixes etc on this project yesterday i cannot open the file. The project it self are only on 8900 kB. What to do???? I can open my recently "newly" made and used projects.... Ive tryed some other projects that was also old, all between 2-6 months.. And it is just randomly witch i can open and witch i "Cannot open"..
This is the error for CS6.
This is the error for CS 5.5.
If you got some suggestions scream out! Will try it all that have worked before.. (If someone have had this same problem atleast!)
    Sincerely,
    David

First, a tip: Try manually breaking the links to the file by moving that document you want to open to your desktop or another directory or such and then try opening them... (corrupt image previews and/or images can then be largely elminated as a potential cause)
As @Peter mentioned, we (Markzware - link here to how that works) can likely fix this file. Interesting notes from @jongware above. Without having seen this file, our research shows there are various reasons an InDesign file can head south and corrupt or crash on you. Just like a doctor can not always say what caused the problem, there are some basic steps we all should take. For instance, OS up to date, InDesign using the latest update available, enough disk space and scartch disk space for heavy Adobe design operations. Here is a list of some of the most common issues with bad INDD documents:
    * Corrupt Font(s) (or corrupt font caches - see below)
    * Corrupt Image(s)
    * Power Failure
    * Placing images via drag-and-drop from an Internet page
    * Working on an InDesign file over a network or on a remote server
Here is a video on how to tackle the font caches of InDesign, which is good to do once and a while anyway:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf5ZuiaYgus
For checking individual font files (fonts are like mini apps really), we recommend either FontExplorer XPro or Extensis Suitcase Fusion 4, with the later perhaps the more popular of the two.
You can contact me on [email protected] if you need assistance with us trying to recover your bad InDesign CS file further. We also have a PDF to InDesign conversion tool called PDF2DTP if you have a PDF.

  • InDesign CS6 and PDF Opening

When I try to open a PDF in InDesign CS6, I get a warning that the PDF can't be opened because a) a necessary  plug-in may be missing, or b) the document is already open. The document isn't open, so what's happening?

There is Recosoft and Markzware who have professional PDF to InDesign conversion tools. Markzware, whom I represent, offer PDF2DTP, which has the years of desktop publishing conversion, preflight and packaging technolgy behind it and will even also import native .AI files, in addition to PDF to InDesign CS6 or soon also InDesign CC.

  • My Indesign Crashes When Opening a indesign file.

I worked a file quark to indesign conversion. Copy the Text to Indesign Template. After finishing the Document I saved it and close it. When I try to open that file Indesign crashed
    Message appears
"The exception unknown software exception (0xc000000d) occurred in the application at location 0x78138a8c."
    Some one help me?

I am getting this same error - first it says,
Adobe InDesign is shutting down. A serious error was detected. Please restart InDesign to recover work in any unsaved InDesign documents" then it says, "The exception unknown software exception (0xc000000d) occurred in the application at location 0x78138a8c."
It only happens with one file, which I worked on for several days with no trouble. As far as I know, it has no strange fonts in it. I am the only one who works on it. It is based on a corporate template, which may have created some kind of font issue. However, since I can open all the other files based on the same template, that seems unlikely.
I can't open it to rename or export it, but I did make a copy, try to open that, renamed it, changed the file extension to .inx, deleted my preferences, deleted the SING file, renamed RecoveryData, and tried several shut-downs and re-starts, to no avail.
    Any other ideas?

    Thanks for any help!

  • Print to PDF (Acrobat9) from InDesign CS4

The Adobe PDF Conversion Settings will not allow me to use other settings than "standard.joboption". If I choose other settings it automatically jumps back to "standard. Anyone else got the same problem or maybe a solution?

The settings for the printer are in the printer properties, not setup (I think that is for the InDesign conversion - sorry, I don't have InDesign). When you say jumps back to standard, you mean in the resultant PDF? I assume that is what you mean and that suggests that in using the Adobe PDF printer, you never set the properties in the printer.
As for the PS issue, there is no need to print to file with the Adobe PDF printer. If you properly set the properties in the printer, just print to get the PDF. In the process a PS file is created and then sent to Distiller. Thus I have no idea what you are doing with the PS file creation.

  • Is Helvetica Greek Upright OTF available?

I posted an InDesign conversion-related question a while back. Now my client has decided to switch from Quark and PageMaker to InDesign 2.0.
Now my quesitons is, for Greek, we now use Helvetica Greek family (like upright, bold, inclined, etc. on the Mac). Is the equivalent OTF font set already available? Or, if not, can I convert my current TTF to OTF using the FDK? I installed the FDK on my Mac (OS9.2.2), but was unable to get it to work. I also checked this forum but could not find anything helpful.
Would like to see some enlightening suggestions from those who have already experienced this.
    Thanks a million!!!
    Yanling Yao

Adobe did not license Helvetica Greek in Type 1 format, so we did not convert it to OpenType as part of our type library conversion effort.
Adobe does have OpenType fonts that support Greek, including the Myriad Pro family.
It is possible to use the FDK, likely in conjunction with a font editor, to convert your existing TTF to OpenType. However, there would likely be considerable work involved. You could do this particular task much more easily with retail tools, such as FontLab.
