InDesign CS3 Workflow Question for a Playbill?

Hi guys,
I am designing a playbill in InDesign CS3. The cover of the playbill is of a different stock than the interior pages.
Should I create an InDesign book with the cover and the interior pages as a separate document, or keep them as one? The pages are the same size, it's just the stock (and probably the finish - the cover may have some embossing) that will be different. The printer has not yet been selected by the client (long story...), so I have no guidelines as to how they would want it prepared... What would be the best generic method?
Many thanks,
Martin

I hate to say this, but in your shoes I'd probably prepare two documents for the moment. One that is facing pages and has the cover included, and one that is a cover-only in non-facing, full-spread-width pages (one or two, depending on if there is printing inside the cover). When it's time to go to print he decision can be made whether to abandon the cover file or delete the cover pages form the body.
Why would I do that? Because it sounds like a fast-track job where the specs could change right up to the point of printing. An embossed cover is going to need separate handling, and will be easier all around as a separate file, but if the client decides to forego that bit, and the run is short, there are plenty of digital output machines capable of handling a cover inline on different stock.
Essentially, there is no right answer in your situation.

  • How to learn Indesign CS3  SDK programming for windows

    Hi,<br /><br />I am very new to plugin development.I am working in Indesign CS3 SDK (windows).<br /><br />But I am not able to write /understand the syntax of InterfacePtr.<br /><br />for eg :<br /><br />InterfacePtr<IClassIDData> orgDocFileHandlerData(doc, IID_ORGICLASSIDDATA); <br /><br />We get Pointer of any Interface , and pass some arguments .<br /><br />So can anybody help how to learn this programming , I am not finding any <br /><br />books or tutorials on this so that I can read from the basic. I have only <br /><br />referred to Programming Guide(CS3). Can anybody please help/explain  me how <br /><br />to learn it?<br /><br />Thanks.<br /><br />Ravi Sharma

It's only my way of understanding about InDesign SDK :<br /><br />* SDK objects are know as 'boss(es)' and are accessed thru interfaces.<br />* You can imagine object as collection of interfaces. And you can even aggregate new interfaces to existing objects.<br />* When you have a reference to an interface of a boss, you can access other interfaces (of the same boss - or object) using the *amazing* syntax : (here, doc is a probably an IDocument interface on a kDocBoss object, and you want to access it's IClassIDData interface)<br />InterfacePtr<IClassIDData> orgDocFileHandlerData(doc, IID_ORGICLASSIDDATA); <br />* And finally, InterfacePtr has a reference counter, which allows the framework to destroy the interface object - not the boss of course, only the memory used by the object - when it's non mre referenced.<br /><br />HTH !

  • InDesign CS3 AD Question

I have designed an AD in InDesign CS3.  After I have exported it into a PDF, and Take a look at it, it looks good.  However when I print it out there light boxes around the graphics, and sometimes the layers there are not there when I look at it on the computer, only on the hard copy.  How do I get rid of those?

Missing layers? Are they set to non-printing? do you see them if you go into preview or overprint preiew mode?

  • InDesign workflow question for longer document (book)

I'm new to Indesign and have read through the help topics and searched around but I can't seem to find an exact answer... I may be phrasing my question wrong.
I have a complete book in basic text (txt). What is the desired (or best in your experience) way to start work. In my mind I want to import the text as a whole, populate all pages, then I want to come back and format chapters and add images.
Everything I try doesn't support my idea (I am new to this software and I may just be approaching this incorrectly.) I also come from a different background and a different tool set so any advise would help.

To elaborate on Simon's answer, this is my workflow for straight-on books:
    - Make a basic set of Master pages. You will need at least a single set with page numbering and, optionally, headings.
    - Load all text. You will get lots and lots of pages, because it's still unformatted, but that's okay.
    - I usually cut off front matter and put each item on a page of its own, so tiddling with it won't cause reflow of the entire document. You will need at least a title page and a reverse; "proper" books have a minor title page, a (c) page, a proper title page, and a blank. (Grab any one from your bookshelf that you like and copy its layout for these.) My first "true" flowing page is the first page of chapter 1. Remember to insert 2 pages (or perhaps more -- an even number) for a table of contents.
    - Go through the main text from first to last page, applying basic formatting, paragraphs, subtitles, etc. -- the plain text works. Make and use paragraph styles for each unique format -- do not (or at least as possible!) apply local formatting. Use character styles for italics and bold in plain text.
    - Go through the main text again, applying formatting to each new chapter. Insert page breaks (Odd Page Breaks for right-hand starting chapters) where appropriate. If you use Odd Page Breaks, insert them before
    i every
new chapter (or use the "Break On Odd Page" Keep Option) -- i.e., not just when you seem to need one. It will change if you reformat or add picchers.
    - Go through your text
    i again,
this time adding all pictures, tables, etc. You can do the previous steps in any order you like, but this one must be done from front to back. If you have right hand chapters and the one before it has no text, make that one completely blank (i.e., remove header & page numbering).
    - Tidy up the front matter and generate the contents.
    - Remove the extra blanks at the end. These were the overspill from the plain text import.
    - Sit back 'cause you're done!
As you see, your own ideas weren't bad at all.

  • Workflow question for PPRO CS 5.5

    Hi
I have a question to a specific workflow for PPRO CS 5.5, Windows.
    I do like this:
Put a videoclip to the timeline
Shorten the right side by 30 sec. to cut off the last part.
Put another videoclip right next to the first one, and this clip I leave as it is, so it is full lenght.
    Now my question is:
I want to fade the first clip to black for the last 5-6 visable sec. and then go to the next clip, but here is where my trouble is.
If I leave the two clips snapped together the transition (dissolve or dip to black) will go on the right side of the cut, and fade out in the "hidden" part of the first clip, so to say, which basicly is ok, but not what I want.
I want the last 5-6 sec. visable video to fade out, and the only way I can get it is by dragging the two clips appart a few sec. before adding the transition.
It is a bid hard to explain, but I hope you guys do understand what I mean.
Maybe it is just so by design?
    Thanks for any input.
    /Ulf

Thanks Jim, might be the best solution.

  • Lightroom 1.1- CS3 Workflow Question

I'm primarily using Lightroom 1.1 for processing photos but I also want to make some use of PS CS3, although initially only for sharpening purposes (one small step at a time!).
I'd love to hear from any of you who are doing this successfully with some advice re how to best move back and forth between the two programs for that purpose (sharpening) only.
If someone has successfully laid this out in a book or other web posting I'd greatly appreciate the title or URL.
    Thanks.
    Mark

As far as English language versions go, I would say no, or at least not yet. This is because Peachpit will already have copies of the current, version 1.0 edition on sale and these would need to go out of print first. That is one of the problem with print media production that is faced by all print authors. One can't release an immediate print update if it makes the exisitng unsold stock immeditately go out-of-date.
Releasing a PDF update seemed to me the fairest solution since this gives everyone the opportunity to get up to speed with the latest changes without ecpecting readers to fork out more money to buy a new book update. But expect much of the content that is in the current update to merge with a future version of the print book. So far, I am aware that Scott Kelby has taken the same route as myself and released a PDF supplement, but I don't know what other authors have planned.

  • How to access indesign cs3 document through VC++

    Hello
i am new to VC++, i need to communiacte Indesign CS3 through VC++, for this what can i do? inorder to access indesign docuemnts,
i also need to access a Third party API for CS3 through VC++, for the two puproses, i dont have any idea, so
    kindly help me
    with regards,
    ram

Hi ram<br /><br />As Olav has pointed out, you need to decide whether to use COM or SDK.<br /><br />SDK is hard core - and I really mean HARD CORE. I consider myself to be a reasonably good VC++ programmer, but when I tried to develop an InDesign plug-in using SDK and VC++ I was completely lost.<br /><br />However it is possible to use VC++ to control InDesign via the COM object.<br /><br />Here is what you should do:<br /><br />1) Make a new VC++ project (MFC, MFC Application)<br />2) In Wizard dialog select Dialog Based and leave everything else unchanged (simply press Next)<br />3) You now have a simple empty dialog with 2 buttons<br />4) Double-click the OK button<br />5) Insert the following code (before OnOK()):<br /><br />// COM support required for this<br />//  Call CoInitialize() to initialize the COM library on the current thread<br />if(::CoInitialize(NULL) != S_OK) return;<br /><br />// Create instance of InDesign Application<br />InDesign::_ApplicationPtr app;<br />// Use the appropriate version here<br />//  This string will be used to search the registry for the application<br />//  associated with it and the same is invoked. <br />//  If you have different builds of the same version and you want to work<br />//  with a specific build, call CreateProcess() for that build and then<br />//  call CreateInstance() so that the currently running instance is returned.<br />app.CreateInstance(L"InDesign.Application.CS3");<br /><br />// Open existing document<br />InDesign::DocumentPtr doc = app->Open("C:\\InDesign\\myDocument.indd", true);<br />InDesign::PagePtr page = doc->Pages->FirstItem();<br />InDesign::TextFramePtr textFrame = doc->TextFrames->FirstItem();<br />textFrame->Contents = "Hello world";<br /><br />6) Go to the start of the file<br />7) Insert the following code before // CAboutDlg dialog used for App About<br /><br />// Required for calling COM initialization methods<br />#include <objbase.h><br /><br />// Import InDesign's Type Library<br />#import "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\Version 5.0\Scripting Support\5.0\Resources for Visual Basic.tlb"<br /><br />8} Build and run the project (F5). When you press OK, InDesign should launch, open your document, find the first page, find the first TextFrame and replace the text (contents) with "Hello world"<br /><br />How to get in contact with your third-party API is a completely different ball game (not in the scope of this forum), but at least you now have a VC++ project with header files etc.<br /><br />If your third-party API is indeed an InDesign plug-in, I totally agree with Olav that you have to direct your questions to the SDK forum.<br /><br />Best regards,<br />Bo

  • Error message when opening Indesign CS3

After using Indesign CS3 without trouble for several years, today I reloaded it onto a new PC (generally identical to the old; a little more powerful) but when starting it up, keep getting the message 'Error 45.   Error String - Object invalid'.   Reference is made to line 387 and then line 345.   When a new document is opened, the programme just hangs.  I have never experienced anything like this before.
I have removed the programme from the system (Win 7) and reinstalled it but the error continues.
    Any ideas?

My recollection is this is a Suitcase error. There was a thread about it here a few months ago, I believe, and I think an update to Suitcase fixed it.

  • Adobe InDesign CS3 not running?

i get a crash report as soon as i try to run Adobe InDesign CS3 any help on it? i as something that they are working on it? how soon can i see this happening is there any thing I can do to fix it? i need this for school by monday to get this big project done. pleas help.

I see you posted two topics with the same problem. Not smart. But here is my answer from the other topic in this one as well. I hope it helps you out.
InDesign CS3 worked fine for me, for a week. Now it crashes on launch too. On rare occasions where it doesn't crash on launch it will crash opening any file.
Adobe recommends people do a clean install of Leopard instead of an upgrade to prevent this. This is what I read on their website. I did a clean install, and yet InDesign crashes. So no luck with that tip. I managed to get it working this morning.
    * I deleted all application font caches using (free) FontExplorer (Linotype)
    * I deleted all applications with the official installer (it has that option)
    * I switched off as many fonts as possible to eliminate corrupt font issues
    * I re-installed InDesign, ran Adobe Updater and rebooted my system
    After that. It ran.
No explanation for why it started crashing before. Maybe this works for you. It wil take some time though so make yourself some coffee or something :-S
    Adobe should look into this.
    About fonts not working:
Leopard is very strict with fonts I noticed. Some of my (legally purchased and non corrupt) fonts that worked in Tiger no longer work or work incorrectly in Leopard (noticably when using old style figures in fonts that have no regular figures).
    Not good.

  • Indesign CS3 with Powermath handling

    Hi All,
I am opening a new topic reg. Indesign CS3 with Powermath Handling.
Our customer is very specific they want in Indesign CS3 and Powermath for Math handling.
We are automating a process of handling powermath equations in Indesign, since powermath has ASCII import and Export option.
We have created a .tbl file which will convert all the mathtype equations to powermath coding automatically, then we flow it in template and just select the text part and we call the powermath import option to convert all the equation in the document to actual, this process is success and its going smooth.
    Now. The actual problem starts------------
Client needed XML deliverable, all the powermath equations they wanted TeX coding for XML deliverable.
So I thought that I will put this in this forum to get suggestion reg. this, all the equation and done in powermath with Indesign CS3,
We can export all the equation back to powermath ASCII, but how do I convert the powermath to TeX.
    kavya

    Hi Kavya,
"We have created a .tbl file which will convert all the mathtype equations to powermath coding automatically,"
How you can created .tbl what it meant.

  • Creating an index in InDesign CS3 - is there any way to limit where and for what it looks?

I'm creating an index for a 300-page book using InDesign CS3 on both a PC with Windows XP home and a MacPro with OS X Leopard (I take this book back and forth between these two computers). I have created this as a book (.indb) file so I can use the Index panel with the book option checked to include all of the book chapters.
There are two things I was wondering how to do, if they can be done at all.
1 - I want the index to look for entries in the main pages only, not in the master pages.
2 - I'd like to be able to do only attributed text. For example, I'd like the index to find only the word people when it is bold and italic, and not all of the other places it may occur. Can I do this with a style also, paragraph and/or character?
    Thanks so much,
    Marcy

Read http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/WS8721440D-5F68-4fd6-8115-CA3BEDACF001a.html (the online Help on indexes) -- it will probably answer a few questions.
One I do know immediately is your question on "picking up" stuff from master pages and only with formatting. InDesign does not make an index for you -- you have to (oh! manual labor!) mark the words that should appear in the index yourself. So just don't mark them on master pages, or when not bold and/or italic. You might be wondering about that little button "Mark all instances", well, it does what it say, and in your case you do not want to mark all instances.
The Capitalization issue is, AFAICR, somewhere in the Help; and so is your singular/plural stuff. The latter one is easy solved: if you mark a word to be indexed, ID asks you in a friendly dialog how it should be included, and that defaults to the current selected phrase, but you are free to edit the text in that dialog. ID does not mark the word or phrase; it inserts an invisible marker inside the to-be-indexed word that contains all information you enter in the Add Index Entry dialog, and it uses that to determine what page number to add. (That invisible marker is visible with "Show Invisible Characters", and can be cut, pasted and deleted at will -- so to remove a water melon, find the marker, and delete it.)

  • InDesign CS3 - Vanilla Install - Question Marks All Over My Content

Yes, I'm still using InDesign CS3 on my MacBook Pro from 5 years ago. CS3 has worked like a charm and I've never had a problem with any files until this morning.
I've got a 120 page book, each page with images and text boxes, none of which are threaded. I opened my file this morning and all my content boxes: images and text have question marks on the top left corner.
I have no plug-ins. The installation is straight out of the box with the occasional updates, which stopped quite awhile ago.
The error that pops up when I place the cursor in a text box is: "31-40-TasksAssemble-Instal.incx" cannot be located.  Another error is: "31-40 TasksDirectly supe-1.incx cannot be located. I have no idea what these mean and when I did a Google search there were only 3 returns and they were from what appeared to be software pirate sites. I can't find a reference to this on the Adobe forums either.
I've saved under a different name, different file type and replaced the preferences, all to no avail. I think the application is behaving as though I've "checked out" the content, but I don't share my files with anyone and the file itself isn't on a network - there is nowhere to check out to, and the commands to check in is grayed out so I can't reverse the behavior.
I'm stumped and I have a deadline! Can anyone help??
    thank you!

No one has worked on or had access to this file but me. I'm on a network but I'm a Mac in a PC world and no one would even know how to find my hd, let alone do anything on it.
I have to believe it is related to my moving my entire project folder to an external hd (not just the file as I mentioned before) as a means of backup. I don't know why it would matter or what it could have done unless there are files created in the Library that are somehow related/linked to the stories.
I'm still searching the Adobe Forums for something related but all ID/IC related discussions relate to people actually using IC!
I've unlinked all of my content from IC and now I'll have to see what happens.
    [POSTSCRIPT]
I've been editing my layout most of the day and so far so good.
The oddity of each box asking for a link to InCopy, which has never been used, happened only after I dragged my project folder to an external hard drive as a precautionary backup. All InDesign files in both original and backup folder suffered this problem. I didn't dare open any other ID files for fear of corrupting them so I can't say how widespread this problem would have been.
I do not know why making a copy of a folder would have created this problem and I can't find any discussion thread that talks about it, much less sheds any light on the subject.
After unlinking all of the boxes from their non-existent "host file" the boxes remained intact complete with images and formatting. I saved often!
