You can try the script mentioned in #1 here: Re: InDesign 6 is crashing when attempting to open a particular document. All others are opening OK.
    Here's how to install a script: http://indesignsecrets.com/how-to-install-a-script-in-indesign-that-you-found-in-a-forum-o r-blog-post.php

  • Question about InDesign File Structure

I had an interview Friday for a design job and they asked me to send them a stripped InDesign file without photos or anything, just a file so they can check out the structure of the file and see how I set up my files.
    1. What is good file structure?
    2. What do you suppose they're looking for?
    3. What should I send them?
    Thanks!

    I would provide the following:
Bleed setup     (Usually  specified as .125 inches for commercial print)
Layer Stacking Order (Z order)     (To see if you know how a  document flattens)
Margins and Columns     (Mainly for Multi-Column Documents)
Page  Setup     (Whether Facing Pages or Single Page spreads are needed)
I  would start with 3 layers listed how they appear in the Layer Pallete:
Text     (This  remains on top to counteract the affects of transparency)
Images     (This layer used for all images or type with  transparecy effects)
Background     (I create a bleed size rectangle with a fill  and stroke of none as a default)
    If including text:
    Provide an example of:
    Character and Paragraph Styles
    Nested Styles
    BONUS: Grep Styles
I would also make a mixed ink group of some sort and dieline utilizing a spot color and overprint.
It might impress them if you included Rich Black where needed.
All of these would show them your mastery of Indesign and Print Design

  • How do I import multiple Ai files into one Indesign File - whilst still keeping the Ai Files editable and up dateable for the one Indesign File?

    Hi All,
Im relatively new to Ai and Indesign, and have been doing Uni work over Christmas, and have a rather urgent question thats stressing me out.
I originally had many art boards in my ai file, but due to the number, I split these into single files to help my computer run better.
Now I want to organise them into one document to save. From searching online Indesign can import these and save as one file, yet automatically update if the original ai file is updated. I would like to do this but just don't know how to do this correctly?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Im using CC Ai and indesign.
    Thanks in advance
    Sam

Yes, effectively I would like to catalogue the files into one collection so i can save as one PDF and Print as one.:)
I know I could save each AI as a pdf them then merge the pdf's together in acrobat, but I have nearly 100 files so would feel more comfortable seeing them all together before print / saving.
My concern is that if I insert them in Ai, will the file resolution reduce? and will the ai still be editable and would it update the indesign file?
    Thanks for the quick reply

  • How to create multiple editable PDFs from data merged Indesign file

    Hi
This is quite complicated but I'm hoping someone can help me and hoping I can explain it too!
I am working on a project for a client. She wants to send 150 people a 6 page PDF with fields to complete and return to her.
She has an Excel spreadsheet with some of the fields completed already so these will be Data Merged into InDesign CS6.
The short version of the question goes like this:
Can you automate the process so that once all the data is in the InDesign file, it can then create a PDF every 6 pages all in one go?
For those still interested, the long version of the question goes like this:
I have created 3 pages in InDesign with fields to complete and used the 'Data Merge' facility to add the Excel info.
I have created 3 more pages with blank fields to fill in.
Then I have made all fields editable using the 'Buttons and Forms' facility in the Interactive menu.
Then I have created an interactive PDF. Then I have opened that PDF in Adobe Acrobat X Pro and saved it as 'Reader Extended PDF' and 'Enable Additional Features'
I now have an Editable PDF with half the fields filled in and half blank to be filled in and this can be saved and returned.
Now, this would be great if it was only one or two. But I need to create 150 different versions and this is just for the Pilot study. If all goes well, this will go to 5,000 people and I can't be creating 5,000 seperate PDFS!!
At this stage, I am just focussing on the 150. So again, going back to the original question, is there a script that could be written either to break up the 1st PDF every 6 pages into 150 different PDFS? Is there even a way of extending that script to Save as Reader Extended etc? Is there a simple idea that I'm missing? Are there any ways to do this? I can use 'Created Merged Documents' to make 150 x 6 pages in Indesign so can anything be done from there?
    Any advice greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    G

    Hi Akash,
    1) Pass the three header data in header table. 2) Pass all the item data in item table. here explain where you struck.

  • Batch importing Word files into separate InDesign files

    Hi,
I have what I though would be a fairly common question, but I can't seem to find any information about it in this forum or on the web.
I have a folder of Word files (over 100, which is why I don't want to do this manually) and one InDesign CS4 file that I'd like to use as a template (basically it's just a couple of pages with some threaded text boxes and a few images). I would like to write a script that will go through the Word files, one by one, and pull each into the text box in the InDesign file before saving it as a new copy (ideally with the same name as the Word file). So, if I have 100 Word files and one InDesign file in a folder, I'd like to be able to run a script and end up with 100 new InDesign files.
I think I can deal with importing and placing the text, and saving the file again. It's mostly the question of using javascript to go through a folder to find all of the filenames so that I can pass the name to the import file command that is confusing me.
Oh, I'm on a Mac with OS 10.6 and using InDesign CS4.
    Thanks!

Before reinstalling (which is most often unneeded) it would be useful to test the way the app behave when it is used in an other User Account.
If it behave flawlessly, no need to reinstall it.
If it doesn't, it *_may be useful_* to reinstall it but it's not sure.
Nothing prove that the problem is really linked to the installed application's files.
It may be linked to a file built on the fly like preferences or fonts cache…

  • How do I make sure the photos in my InDesign files are at a high resolution when I send those files to a coworker? (Keeping them as .indd)

I am leaving my job and we have been uploading all of my InDesign files onto Google Drive to prepare, so that my boss/coworkers can use and access my work. My boss has found that he can't download the files without the photos in the documents turning out super low-res. It's not just the display on his computer (although they do LOOK really awful); they also print in really low-res. I can print and view the SAME files in high-res when I'm working on my computer, and when I export the documents into a PDF, PNG, JPEG, etc., and THEN give him the files, they are at the appropriate resolution. Which has been all fine and dandy, but... Since I'm the only designer on staff, and I am leaving, I am going to need to be able to hand off my documents to my boss/coworkers. Help?!?!?! Thanks!

If you go to Window>Output>Preflight. It will show you what you are missing in your files.
You can also go to Window>Links. Find the picture in question and it will give you a status (?) if you are missing any image. At the bottom of that same Links panel you will see tiny icons that say Relink, Go to Link, Update, you can replace or find any that are missing.
To find out if your images are high res for print, you can go to Window>Info and select the pictures in question. It will give you an effect ppi when you click on your picture. If it's not at least 300 it's not high res.
After you fix all that, then package the file.

  • How do I make type with effects appear the same in a .pdf as it does in the native InDesign file?

The type I am referring to is the words "What to do next" above.
On the left is what they look like in the native InDesign CS5 file they were created in. This is how I would like them to appear.
On the right is how they appear when I try to save the brochue as a .pdf.
My question is how can I get the words "What to do Next" to appear the same in the .pdf as they do in the native InDesign file?
    Thanks for your help!

Effects are usually using some type of blending mode - you should preview your InDesign file using View>Overprint Preview
That will show you what they look like when they blend with the background.

  • Why are white lines appearing in images in PDF files but not the original InDesign files?

    Hi folks!
Let me just start out by saying that I'm not a graphic designer and have basically no experience with graphic design programs, aside from the little futzing around I've tried to do with InDesign. My company (which publishes a monthly magazine) has decided that it would be a great idea to get the files to our magazine from the graphic design firm that actually handles the production end of things so that we may offer back articles, etc., and modify them as needed. Somehow I've gotten assigned the task of handling this. However, I've encountered some problems along the way. The graphic design firm uses Quark, we own InDesign (CS3) and use Markzware to convert the files. Most things seem to work okay in this arrangement but I'm having problems with the images in the file when I create PDFs. Although the images look fine in the InDesign files (and are of print quality), when I create PDFs of some files, thin white lines appear over the images in the PDF document. I asked our graphic designer about this but she has no idea, and she isn't very familiar with InDesign.
So, my question is, where are these lines coming from and how do I stop them from appearing? As a reminder, I'm not a graphic designer and am fdairly ignorant in design software terminology. If you're kind enough to try to help me with this problem, I'm going to require an explanation in plain English. Basically explain it to me like you would to a 10 year old.
If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks in advance,
    Lynn

I think Bob was typing too fast and meant to ask if you were distilling, not to tell you distill.
Distilled PDF (you get distilled by printing to PDF rather than exporting) always flattens transparency, which is what makes those white "stitching" lines.
You can make the stitching disappear on screen by turning off smoothing in the Acrobat prefs, and it shouldn't print on a press, but it sounds like you may be doing the output on a digital machine and it's likely to show on the lower resolution output.

  • CS6 Indesign files not fully loading

I have just purchased CS6 and created a few InDesign files. Now, on numerous occasions, when I try to open an existing file (not just one particular file), the file doesn't fully load. It shows some of the frame outlines and the graphic "content grabber", but all graphics and text do not load. While this is still trying to load, I can open another InDesign file (within the same ID session) and it's usually OK. Meanwhile the file I tried to open originally still won't load, and if I try to go back to it (or close it), the program stops responding. It doesn't do this every time I open Indesign, but at least 50% of the time.
I have reinstalled CS6, recreated preference files, follwoed every step of the "damaged file" help, but still no resolution. Any ideas please? To add to the scene, I did initially download a trail of InDesignCC, but when I purchased CS6, I uninstalled CC and use the Adobe Cleaner tool. Could this still be having an impact, and if so, how does one completely remove all tracse of the CC version?

    Hi Peter
I think I may have eventually stumbled upon something ...
I installed CS6 on my laptop to see if I would get the same problems. Initially I didn't, but did keep getting messages on opening file re embedded profile mismatch. All was OK when I just clicked OK, but when I went to switch the messages off (so indesign stopped asking question), the error returned. So I went back to my main PC, reset my preferences file to reset defaults again. As with laptop, I again got the embedded profile mismatch message and all the while I clicked OK, previous problem files, opened fine. So I thought I would try to chnage the embedded profile in a file, then save it - when I then tried to open the file again, I got the problem again!
For your info, my Indesign working space/profile is set to sRGB IEC6etc and the document was embedded with Adobe RGB. There was also a mismatch on the CMYK settings.
Does any of this help point in the right direction?
    thank you.

  • Batch Convert InDesign Files to PDF: Acrobat 9 Pro Opens CS3

A question came up in the InDesign forum about batch converting InDesign files. I've never really needed to do it but I was aware of the batch convert command. The OP reported errors so I tried it myself and while it worked, for some reason Acrobat 9 Pro is opening InDesign CS3 even though I have CS4 and CS5 installed.
I can't seem to find any way to change the default for INDD files. I tried launching ID CS5 first, but Acrobat still launched ID CS3. If I double click an INDD file in Windows Explorer, it opens in CS5 so the operating system has the default correct.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Bob

    Thanks,
I just found that out, too.
What I'd like to find out is how to fix this.

  • Convert InDesign File to a Word Document

I am trying to convert a file from an InDesign file to a word document and have fallen into a problem. I also have Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro and have tried to save my InDesign file as a PDF, so far so good. It looks perfect, but when I save the PDF as a .doc all of the text and pictures have moved around and the different frames used in InDesign have joined and there is no way to rearrange the pages like they were originally. I need to convert these pages to Word Perfect so that I can send them out and they can be edited. How can an InDesign file be saved to be used with Word Perfect? I thought if I converted it to a PDF and then to a word, everything would be fine, but the file isn't be converted correctly.

    > How can an InDesign file be saved to be used with Word Perfect?
Short answer is you can't do it easily. Didn't you post this question in
    ID forum awhile back?
If not, it was discussed there and you might want to search there. If it
was you, nothing's changed. What you want to do is just plain work and
you'll never get the same type of layout in a word processor as you will
    in a pagelayout application.

    Hi all,
I'm just startede exploring Flash Catalyst, and have learned a lot by using a Illustrator file.
But now my question is how to import a Indesign file into FC. I have read that it is possible throurgh some additional steps in Flash Pro. But I can figure out or read how to do it,,,
    Can anyone help me?
It is a book created in Indesing, that I want to create as a swf, with the advanced features of FC. The features in Indesigns interactivity, isn't quite enough for my hunger to make it more web-eatable.. :-)

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Thats what i was looking for .  Another small thing I notice here is that when i export to html a preview of the html was displayed in the browser. I think thats because the "View HTML after export option is enabled by default. Can I change this setting so that there will be no preview of the HTML after exporting?. Again thanks for the previous answer.

  • Tints vs. transparency; printing indesign file - so confused now

    Hello!
I'm still learning indesign so i'm definitely not a pro. I've been working on an assignment which consists of creating compositions in indesign. The indesign file basically has text, lines and colored areas.
I've just realized that I am only allowed to use a couple of colors and their tints. This whole time i've been using color and working with its transparency. Is that remotely the same thing? I am not sure how to get the exact same color i've produced when working with the transparency of a color as a tint. (I'm not suppose to be using transparency yet... XD) Please help.
Also, once the above is figured out, what is the correct way to export this file as a pdf? Finally, I also need to export all 12 compositions as a 72dpi jpeg to upload online-- how do i do that? The file in indesign is a cmyk file and i'm pretty sure it exports as a cmyk pdf which is okay since i'm printing the pdf. The jpeg part really throws me off though.
So far, this is what i'm 100% sure on:
    Indesign:
File> Adobe PDF presets> High Quality Print> give the file a name and save
    then
this is where i get confused - do I changed the standard options and compability options as well? what about the compression? i've basically printed so many variations of the project playing with the above (from what i've read) and have reached a point in which i'm no longer sure what the correct colors of my file are once exported as a pdf.
Please help me. Thank you in advance!!!
(forgot to mention i'm working with indesign CS5.5 and adobe acrobat pro x)

    Hello!
Thank you for your kind and helpful replies. I was away celebrating Thanksgiving. Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving, rest of the week!
    @ Peter
Thank you for your explanation of what offset printing is. It really helped me visualize the process. Is this something used only when it comes to printing large quantities of work then? (I'm assuming large files as well)
    @ Dov
Thanks for explaining your answer in simpler terms. I now understand what you meant. If i'm understanding things correctly, it's not good to use tints over other colors/objects yet it's alright to use them when they are on white backgrounds. Also, it's best not to use tints when it comes to overprinting; transparency is best.
    @ Will
Thanks for your information! I'm a bit confused now to be honest; pdfx-4 is not recommended when overprinting with transparency?
    @ Dov
If I'm understanding correctly, what you and Will are saying is that it's best not to import pdfs that are saved as pdfx-4? I really enjoyed reading all the extra info. It's all quite exciting! (trying to wrap my head around this)
    Thanks guys!!
I decided to export the indesing file under Adobe Pdf Presets> High Quality Print. I didn't change any of the standard settings. With regards to the jpgs, I used the advice recommended - File > Export, choose JPEG, 72 ppi. I do have one large question though...
This is what one of the compositions looks like in indesign:
This is what it looks like when I view it under View> Proof Colors in Indesign:
This is what it looks like when I export it as a Hight Quality Print pdf:
This is what the jpeg image looks like when I export it under the following settings:
And this is what the jpeg image looks like when I export it under these settings:
Is it correct of me to use the exported jpegs with the simulate overprint option selected even though i'm only digital printing this pdf file? The color of the jpeg resenmbles the most of the pdf color. Thus... is it alright to do that?
    Thank you

  • Can you trace which Indesign files link to a specifik image?

I have an image database, that multiple Indesign files link to.
I am not the original author of the Indesign files nor the image database, so I have no overview of how many Indesign files links to each image.
And now I have an image I would like to make a change in - but I am afraid to do so, when I do not know in which Indesign files the image is used.
So my question is - is there a way to track links made to a specific image in any Adobe programme?

May be Flow could do the trick for you....?
