InDesign files take long to open when clicking file icon

Ok, I have a weird problem with a Windows XP machine running InDesign CS6. Whenever the user tries to open an .INDD document by double-clicking the file icon itself, it takes 3-5 minutes, literally, before the document will open. This is with InDesign running already. It happens with .indd files on servers, locally on the desktop, files with content & links, and even completely new & blank documents.
However, if the user simply drags the file into InDesign, it will open up right away. No problem.
This behavior is not being seen on other WinXP machines, nor is it being seen when trying to open other documents in other applications (i.e. MS Word) on this particular computer.
Any ideas? This machine had Windows XP and Adobe CS6 reinstalled from scratch yesterday.
Thanks!
William

Sad that this issue was never addressed or responded to, for I am having the same exact problem with InDesign CS5.5 and with files located on a network server. I tried the above suggestion of dragging the file directly into InDesign but that doesn't work everytime.

    Hi,
Open the Font Book and check the AppleGothic Font is Active, not duplicated and Validates (File Menu).
In the list of fonts it is a long way down.
After that check Helvetica Neue and Lucida Grande.
The first deals with the iMessages Login.
The next is the Font used in the app to display the text. The last is the one that title the Group Bars in Buddy lists (even if you don't show then you need this)
If they check out go to Applications/Utilities and open the Disk Utility and then Repair Permissions.
This checks them against the database on the Mac which is updated when the apps and OS are updated.

    Howdy lpedvm23,
If Safari is not opening any window when you click the icon, I would use these troubleshooting steps from the following article:
If Safari can’t open a window - Safari Help
If you can’t open Safari or a new Safari window, try these suggestions.
Use the latest version of Safari and OS X. To check for a Safari update, choose Apple menu > App Store, then click Updates. For more information, see Keep your Mac up to date.
Check your startup disk using Disk Utility.
If the other suggestions don’t help, try reinstalling OS X.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • I downloaded Firefox 4.0 beta but can't open when clicked on icon or programs list

I downloaded firefox 4.0 beta on my Dell computer ( Vista ) on 2-23-11. I have internet explorer but cannot get into my blackboard learning system at Salt Lake Community college with that. Apparently, firefox is the preferred. My class is online, so this creates a real problem. Help, please, and quickly if possible. Thanks, Sally

After saving the file which is likely called "Firefox Setup 4.0.1.exe" you need to run it to install Firefox 4.
If you do not clear the downloads from the download manager, you can run the installer from the downloads manager. Open the download manager, then right-click on the Firefox setup file and select Open. As soon as you start running the setup file, close Firefox. You need to do this so that the setup file can replace the files in the Firefox installation directory.

    Hi ...
Checked to see how much free space there is on the startup disk lately?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Freeing Up Hard Disk Space - Mac GuidesFreeing Up Hard Disk Space - Mac Guides
If disk space is not the issue, booting in Safe Mode deletes system caches that may help.
A Safe Mode boot takes longer then a normal boot so be patient.
Once you see the Desktop, click the Apple menu icon top left corner of the screen.
From the drop down menu click Restart.
See if that makes a difference ...

That would be due to your network.
    Some common things to check
    Current connection, use speedtest.net
Go to istumbler (Mac) or netstumbler (PC) to get a report of your network, it will help see if there's interference.
On Apple TV go to settings - general - network. Make sure DNS is set to automatic.

  • InDesign CC no longer packages fonts when I need to send a project to the printer

Hey Adobe team: Long-time user from when Photoshop was but a sprout. I recently upgraded from Creative Suite 6 to Creative Cloud and have run into a troubling problem. InDesign CC no longer packages fonts when I need to send a project to the printer. This meant that I had to completely redo a project on deadline for a problem that I’ve never had before. How is this possibly helping your users? And is there a solution in the works or do I need to cancel Creative Cloud and go back to CS6?

    @OurPlace
First of all, you are not addressing any Adobe team. These forums are primarily supported by volunteers who are not Adobe employees and don't officially represent Adobe Technical Support.
    That having been said ...
There was nothing done specifically with InDesign 9 or 10 (the CC and CC 2014) versions of InDesign to change or disable packaging of fonts when packaging a document. It should be absolutely no different from InDesign 8 (the CS6 version).
    Troubleshooting hints:
    (1)     Make sure you check the Copy Fonts (Except CJK and TypeKit) option in the package dialog.
    (2)     Make sure that you are not using any CJK (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) complex fonts that we specifically will never put into a package.
    (3)     TypeKit fonts won't package.
    (4)     Make sure that your file system permissions are such that InDesign can create all the necessary directories and subdirectories for the packaging operation.
    (5)     If on MacOS, exit InDesign and try forcing a clearing of your system font cache and then reboot.
    (6)     Exit InDesign and then find and delete all files on your system with filenames of the form AdobeFnt##.lst where ## is a two digit number; don't delete any other files that start with AdobeFnt. Then reboot and restart InDesign.
    (7)     Reset InDesign's preferences that may have become corrupted. For Windows, start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files. For MacOS, while pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
One of these should either address or resolve your problem. Again, we at Adobe are not aware of any generic issue with packing fonts with InDesign.

  • Saving a book as PDF takes significantly more time when the file binary *.fm rater than *.mif?

Is it possible, that saving a book (with FrameMaker 10) as PDF takes significantly more time when the file is formatted in the binary *.fm rather than the *.mif format?
We have books (+160p) that take about 20 min to be saved as PDF, whereas the same book in MIF format can be saved as PDF within about 4 minutes. Is this a known issue?
Or could that be a problem with our books?
Does anyone know how to speed up the process (how to tweak) or are there any special adjustments in the books or documents that might slowdown the process of saving them as PDF?
The distiller seems not to be the problem. The distiller takes equally long for both formats.
    best regards

Strikes me as peculiar. I would expect that FM is rendering from the data structures in memory, which I would expect to be essentially identical whether originally opened as .fm or .mif.
If return-to-UI time is important, the fastest path is:
    print to local .ps file
    Distill separately.
And it sounds like you have the full Acrobat product, and thus have full Distiller.
I don't have sufficient experience with Print-to-PDF vs. Save-as-PDF to opine on potential time differences for those paths.

How can I recover the "finder" functionality that apparently doesn not exist anymore?
Is it something wrong that I am doing?

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Double-clicking to open files stops working after opening lots of files.

When I double-click a file it will open the file in CS6 version 13.0.1, but then after a while double-clicking will no longer open jpeg or raw files.  I can open the same files by going to File > Open in the Menu Bar.
When I am simply opening downloaded files from my camera, I can open 200-300 by double-clicking with no problems.  However, at times when I am working on an image, it is not long before I can't open a file by double-clicking.  It will open a blank Photoshop window, but without any Toolbar or Menu Bars.
This happens on a regular basis.  Sometimes, also, Photoshop is slow to Quit, for no apparent reason.
Is anyone aware of this problem?

    Still having this problem.
If I open a jpeg and just change the name, then Save As to a folder, I can then open another jpeg by double-clicking.
However, whenever I open a jpeg and make changes to the image in Photoshop, then Save As to a folder, I can then no longer open a jpeg by double-clicking.  Photoshop will open, but the jpeg will not open.
Since this only happens after making changes to a jpeg in Photoshop, it seems to me the problem is with something in Photoshop, and has nothing to do with my OS.

  • Word File Takes Longer and Longer to Save

I’ve been working daily on the same 100-page document for several months. I had no problems with the document under Word 2003. However, under Word 2010 the file grows in size over time, and saving the file takes longer and longer to the point where there
are significant timeouts (Word is “not responding”) whenever an automatic save occurs.
I don't want to diable automatic saves because Word does crash for me on rare occasions, generally if I do something "too fast".
I’ve found a workaround for the problem, and every three weeks or so after the automatic saves have become painfully long I copy the document to the clipboard (except for the last paragraph mark) and then I open a new document based on the relevant template
and I paste the clipboard contents into the new document. I rename the old version of the document and the new version becomes the working version. This reduces the file size (currently around 1.4 MB) by about 150 KB and the problem goes away for another three
    weeks.
Certain aspects of my situation are unusual, and these may or may not be relevant to the problem:
At the end of each day I use (via a macro) the Review, Compare feature of Word to compare the document with the previous day’s version to allow me to reread any changes I made to it.
I use various other macros for intelligent page-turning, resizing windows, smart Find, etc.
I maintain the document as a DOC file (Word 97-2003 Compatibility Mode) because I need to share the document with an organization that requires this format.
The document flips back and forth a few times between being a one-column and two-column document.
The document has a table of contents on the last page.
The headings in the document have embedded section and subsection numbers.
The document has numerous embedded SEQ and cross-reference fields.
The document has embedded EMF pictures that were generated by a non-Microsoft application.
The long times to save the file and the temporary solution I’ve found to the problem suggest that some "junk" is accumulating “in” the last paragraph mark. This junk doesn't cause any operational errors, but it slows things down to the point where
the auto-save times out and I temporarily get the distracting "not responding" message. It would be nice if Word could automatically eliminate the junk in the last paragraph mark so that I wouldn’t have to do it manually.
Do you have any suggestions for how I might eliminate the problem?
I'd be pleased to send a copy of the slow-saving file to a Microsoft Word programmer for diagnosis of the problem.
    I have up-to-date Windows 7 professional (64 bit) and Word 2010 14.0.6129.5000 (32 bit).
    Thanks for your help,
    Don Macnaughton

I am experiencing exactly the same save issue, although I cannot use the suggestion of copying to a new document as I have allot of references within the same document and I'm scared that I'll loose them (or mess them up).
It is nearly a year later, did you have any luck?
    Francois,
I'm still experiencing the problem. However, I've now converted the document from a DOC to a DOCX, but that made no difference.  So every 18 or so days I copy all of the document into a new document except for the last paragraph mark
and the problem goes away for another 18 or so days.  For my document this solution is fully reliable although it's less convenient because it's a little complicated and I worry I may make a mistake or some text may be lost in the transition.
So I'm still looking for a solution to the problem. Is there anything unique about your document or your handling of the document that might be the cause of the problem?  Are you using macros, Compare Versions, switching back and forth between
one and two columns, or anything else that is common to the features that I list in my first post in this thread?
You might want to try my copying solution as a test while keeping your original document as the official version that you continue to work with.  You could then check the test document very carefully to see if my solution works with your
document.  You might find that you can trust my solution (or you might not).
By the way, I make sure that the copy worked properly by doing a Compare Versions of the old and new documents.  (Surprisingly, sometimes the compare finds very minor differences between the two documents, but usually not.)
If the problem really bothers you, you can hire Microsoft Support, although that will cost you some money.  If you do that, please let us know the outcome.

  • 4" x 6" videos take longer to open than a 3" x 5" vid? Load time affected?

I think I know the answer to my question but I want to make sure before I go and change the sizes of all my little mini videos:
Does the speed at which a video opens depend (among other things) on the DIMENSIONS OF THE VIEWING BOX? So that a 3“ x 5” picture takes longer to open than, say, a 4“ X 6” picture?
Is the difference a noticeable one? If a larger picture means waiting only two more seconds for the video to open and show, then that seems an Ok payoff to me. But if the wait becomes considerably longer, than it probably is not Ok to the visitor.
    Thank you.

Winston C... I mean at the point where a visitor to my website has already opened the Big Album Index page and clicks onto one of my mini videos, like the Dominatrix Rise Up vid. If I were to make smaller the box in which you see the Dominatrix speaking, would that page open up faster? If yes, then is it substantially faster? Or am I ok just leaving the dimensions of the box alone?

  • Book icon not opening when clicked

I have an odd problem here.
In my Contents tab on the left side, I have eight Book icons
that, when clicked, open to reveal the Help topics inside them-
just like any normal RoboHelp project would work. However, the very
last Book icon in the list does not open when clicked. I checked
the original file and all of the help topics are under the Book
like they should be. When I compile the file and do a View Primary
Layout, this last Book icon opens correctly. The problem only
occurs once the project is built into the software I'm doing the
Help for. When I move the Book icon up in the list (so it's not the
last one anymore) it works correctly. But then the Book icon that
becomes the last icon doesn't open when clicked. So whichever Book
icon is last in the list doesn't open when clicked. Anyone have any
clue what would cause this? Thanks alot.

Hi Scott45 and welcome to the RH community.
Have you tried deleting the book and adding it again? Also
you can open the project's .HHC file in Notepad (or something
similar) and check that the relevant TOC entry is displayed
    correctly there.
