InDesign to pdf

Help me!!
I'm late to CS5.5, having just upgraded from CS4. I can't figure out a) how to create pdfs and b) where the Acrobat printer is, altho' that's probably a discussion for the Acrobat forum...
I tried the AdobePDF Presets, which used to work like a charm. They're still there, but the file(s) they create won't open in Acrobat...there's some sort of error message about the file(s) being damaged.
Then, I tried to Export. Same dialog box, same result. Writes over the so-called file previously created, but still won't open.
Next, I tried to quit InDesign to go back and use CS4 but got the message that there were background tasks working...I mean working for 5 minutes! Now, I hadn't done anything but try to create a pdf...hmmm.
I searched the forums but couldn't find anything. Surely this is not right...please advise. I'm using CS5.5 Design Premium on a Mac [Lion].

This is not how it is supposed to work.
Go to Window >  Background Tasks. Do you have PDFs still exporting? If so, that's the problem. They may be stuck, there are some bugs that have resulted in that. Many are fixed in 7.5.2. Have you updated?
The Acrobat Printer is no more, because of complex Adobe/Apple interactions. Printing to a PostScript file and distilling it still works, but is highly disrecommended.
I would Force Quit and take the update and restart. You can also search the forum for "disableAsyncExports.txt" and find a wealth of information (too much, really). Note that you can have CS4 and CS5.5 running simultaneously, no need to quit one. Though, of course,
CS4 won't open your CS5.5 files -- you'll need to export them to IDML first.

  • InDesign CS5 PDF - Failure to Export Vector Elements

    Recently, we have had two separate incidents where the creation of an InDesign CS5 PDF failed to export certain vector art elements. The elements are not shared between jobs and the files were physically created in different locations (entirely different servers) within our organization. The elements are pdf and eps and appropriately linked. On the PDF, we're not even getting a low-res version of the artwork. When looking at the PDF in NEO, the containing box of the graphic is not present. One the most frustrating aspects of this is we haven't been able to repeat error in order to fix the error. The next time (or 50 times) the document is exported, the vector art is fine.
    Has anyone else had a similar issue?

    I've had this same problem just today. I have a 64 page INDD that when exported to PDF (print) from CS5 (with no elements on my page set to "non printing elements"), only some of my vector shapes get exported. They are all merely 0.25pt Black Lines used to direct a reader from a comment to a matching illustration, and some pages exported them just fine, and some other pages will not work. I've tried moving them to a new layer, cutting and pasting in place, copying and pasting in place, changing the transparency modes, etc...nothing works...EXCEPT to just redraw the lines.

  • Printing issues from InDesign CS4 pdf file

    Good morning,
    Could you help explain and possibly resolve an issue I'm having with an InDesign CS4 pdf file where the text and image drop shadows (40%) are printing as solid black blocked shapes from a large format printer. The file encompasses 1 overall image, 1 image with drop shadow, 3 text frames with drop shadow effect applied to the text and 1 group set of simple rectangular and ellipse objects with a glow.
    My colleagues in graduate school experienced the same with their files and the output bureau's rasterized the pdf file in Photoshop where it printed out with good resolution. Shouldn't this be resolved first in InDesign rather than rasterizing the file?
    I appreciate any help and insight you could offer myself and my colleagues.

    The printing service uses Acrobat 8 Pro and HP large format printer. My InDesign CS4 document is in the color mode of RGB and color type as Process. I saved it as a pdf file using the standard settings as follows: Preset: High Quality Print, Standard: None and Compatibility: Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3). Are there options I should be paying more attention to when creating the PDF file? Also, I was reading up on Peter Spier's response links.
    This brings me to the next question...I'm creating a photo book for grad school with approximately 40 pages of images (RGB, 300dpi) with feathered drop shadows. What would be the best settings to use when exporting as a pdf file for printing services?

  • InDesign to PDF  - Client wants clickable ads

    I'm laying out a magazine with ads in InDesign CS4 that will be converted to PDF for online distribution.
    The client would like the reader to be able to click on the ads to be taken to the advertiser's website. I'm not making up the ads myself; I'm just placing provided image files.
    How would this be accomplished either in InDesign or in Acrobat?  I'm striking out on searches, since I don't know what the feature is called.

  • InDesign to PDF Background Layer Image Resizes

    In exporting a file from InDesign to PDF for Illustrator, my main background image comes up small and in the upper-left side of the PDF, normally it fills the page when viewed in InDesign. I am using ID v5. I have run into this before, and the problem resolved itself, it is doing it again. I have to get documents to a printer that are for Illustrator. I have tried embedding the image to no avail, removed the tagged option, tried a variety of methods to no avail. Help!

    Illustrator is NOT a general purpose PDF editor and exporting to PDF and opening in Illustrator comes with no guarantees.
    Best advice I can give you is to either create the art work in Illustrator to begin with or find another printer.

  • Indesign-generated .pdf files won't print

    I realize this question is vague to the point of being unanswerable, but here I go anyway.
    Our department's publication person sent me a number of chapters of our book in progress so that I could print an uncorrected proof to show to our funding source. She emailed me .pdf files generated by InDesign CS2, probably, although it might have been CS3.
    She also emailed me the indesign file for the frontmatter because I had some things to add, so the .pdf for that I generated myself.
    I took everything to a local printer we regularly use. To print this job he was using a large commercial Canon setup I think. None of the .pdfs would print on it. He ended up having to print them all as images for the purposes of creating a proof for me.
    Now, I printed all of them myself on our networked postscript printer, both from a Mac and a Windows machine, no problem.
    Since the files had been emailed to me, and then to him, we thought maybe they got corrupted, so I brought them over on a disk, but that didn't help, not even the one file whose .pdf I generated myself would print.
    So is this an issue that has come up--indesign-generated .pdf files being unprintable on a commercial printer but printable on a postscript machine.

    Yes, I'm sorry, I do realize that this isn't enough to diagnose a problem. I was hoping that this might be something that has come up before and someone would recognize.
    As far as I could tell, he was opening up the print jobs in Acrobat and sending them to his printer, which had its own job monitor. When he consulted that monitor he just said, no, it won't print.
    He's a smart guy and I've done a number of jobs with him that were generated in indesign, so I'm really at a loss to explain what has gone wrong with this one.

  • Background missing when exporting from indesign to pdf

    Sometimes when I export a file from indesign to pdf, my background doesn't show up. The background is just a block of solid colour, or gradient. The background block of colour is usually the full size of the page. I've tried to play around to see what is causing this to happen and sometimes if I reduce the size of the block to say, 1/3 of the page then the block of colour shows up, but then when I make it the full size of the page as I actually need it to be, the colour block doesn't show up when I export it to pdf (i've tried all the different pdf presets and it doesn't make a difference)??? Does anyone know why and how to fix it?

    I believe export is an ID option, not an Acrobat option. In that case, you probably should ask in the ID forum.

  • Problems with image conversion from InDesign to PDF

    My images look posterized when I convert from InDesign to PDF. Any ideas about this?

    That'd be in the export settings not in Reader. Ask in the InDesign forum, they'll probably know better.

    Hi everyone,
    One of the agencies I work with has a client who wishes XPS for web development. The native application files are InDesign and the agency has used the XPS driver. They have been successful exporting from InDesign and PDF to XPS, but the embedded hot links will not work once in the XPS format.
    Does anyone know of a means via a third party application, script, witchcraft <smile>, or what have you to export from InDesign and/or PDF to XPS with hot links intact?

    InDesign CS2で直接PDF作成したデータが異常に重くなります。
    他のDTPソフトの時と比べ同じ位の仕様（内容、ページ数、データ容量）の物がPDFになると以前の5〜6倍位のデータ量になってしまいます。
    Acrobat上で最適化してみてもデータ量は変わりません。
    ちなみにAdobe PDF設定（joboption）は以前と同じ「標準」を基本とした設定にしています。
    また、Acrobat6で開けないと言われチェックしてみたら同じ様に開けませんでした。
    これについて理由及び解決策をご存じの方、情報をください。
    また、ブックで書き出した時にPDF上の目次（総目次、扉目次も含めて）にリンクが付くのを解除する方法も分かる方教えてください。

    おっしゃる通り今まではPSデータを書き出してからPDF化していました。
    本来DTPソフトから直接PDF化出来る様になっていると思いますが、今まで試してはいましたがエラーになったりした為、一度PSにしてからDistillerでPDF化を行っていました（「 しおり」も自動で作ってくれるので便利なのですが....）。
    InDesign CS2になってからはエラーが出なくなったので便利で使いだしたのですが、先に記述した様な弊害が生まれてしまいました。
    Illustratorもeps形式からai形式に変えたのも重くなった原因かもしれないので、一度PS書き出しするのも含めて試してみます。
    結果が出たらまた報告させていただきます。

  • Indesign/Acrobat PDF - embedded link file(word, excel, pdf)

    Hi,
    In the microsoft word, we can embedd, the pdf, word or excel files as link, so that when you click the embedded file (for eg. if you click the pdf icon of embedded file in word, the pdf file will open, as same as the word files and excel files will open) . There is will no seperate link files will be there. (so from a word doc embedded with pdf files and excel files will be opened from the word itself)
    Is there any option to do like this in Indesign or Pdf, where we can embedd the Link files inside the indesign, without linking the files from the hard dirve or server.
    Any idea about this? You people understand what i am trying to say?

    Acrobat Pro has an Attachements navigation panel that you can add (embed) files that will open in their native application when clicked to open.
    InDesign can do something similar... you can embed files via the Links panel... you can also edit original (but you might need to unembed it first.
    Not on a computer with InDesign right now, I will check tommorrow.

  • InDesign interactive pdf viewable?

    I'm creating InDesign interactive pdfs with embedded multi-state objects, vide, and Flash games... Needless to say I'm creating these on a Mac and they preview correctly, my question is how current do various users have to be on their Flash plugins in either Flash player or their browser? And, if they're bowser is up to date with the latest Flash plugin do they need to have Flash player at all?

    Most of the interactive features in InDesign are viewable in an interactive pdf. My real question what's the difference between viewing this in acrobat reader as versus using the web plugin for the browser? Is the Flash plugin you download the same as the one that runs in the browser? So if a users browser pluing was updated with the latest version of flash would it matter if they have Flash player loaded... I'm not sure if it's all the same thing anyway as I have Flash loaded on my machine so I can't tell what the hecks going on with reader and the PC...

  • Working in Photoshop Gray to Indesign to PDF help..

    CAN SOMEONE HELP ME save out a PDF in the final tagged color space:  Gray Dot Gain 20%
    I am saving my Photoshop .tif files with embedded profile: Gray Dot Gain 20%
    My InDesign Working CMYK is: US Web Coated SWOP v2
    I place my .tif files in InDesign.
    What is confusing me is InDesign's no Gray settings.
    My first Question is TARGETING my PDF to the desired print space:  Gray Dot Gain 20% — THERE IS NO GRAY CONVERSION OPTION!
    As my InDesign book is in Working CMYK, and my placed .tif files are in Gray Dot Gain 20% — I have determined I will need to Convert to my print profile in Acrobat — but what would be the best Adobe PDF Preset setting to get my tagged CMYK and tagged Gray into a PDF so I can Convert Colors to Dot Gain 20% in Acrobat?
    No Gray support in In Design has be baffled — I am thinking I should avoid Gray all together and just feed InDesign RGB to be sure InDesign passes through my .tiff profile to Acrobat...

    InDesign treats grayscale images as being on the K plate of the CMYK
    working space.
    That is enlightening, yet I do not understand what it means (K v. Dot Gain 20%) — I simply want a PDF properly Converted and tagged with the "Gray Dot Gain 20%" ICC profile.
    Apparently InDesign CS4 cannot pass through Gray Dot Gain 20% properly tagged as such?
    And I will need to follow through Converting to my target print space inside Acrobat.
    I say this because, in my InDesign Export PDF process, I choose to do No Color Conversions, Embed and Preserve Profiles — then I use Acrobat Output Preview> Object Inspector to verify the profiles.
    My first tagged Gray Dot Gain 20% image reads "DeviceCMYK" in Object Inspector.
    The remaining 50 or so tagged Gray Dot Gain 20% images read "DeviceGray".
    This inconsistancy is really weird because my images are all the same tagged Gray Dot Gain 20% going into InDesign.
    All my text in my 100-page book reads as "DeviceCMYK" in Object Inspector.
    I cannot follow that logic (what happened to my profiles and why is my top image now reading as untagged CMYK?).
    If I then use Acrobat Convert Colors "Convert to Profile> Dot Gain 20%> Embed profile — then Acrobat's Object Inspector reads all my images and text as "ICCBasedGray Dot Gain 20%" as desired.
    with greyscale images, I create them in photoshop and embedd grey
    icc-profile into them while saving. Then I place them to Indesign and
    when I export PDF, I choose a CMYK profile
    A PDF Conversion would always need to be based on a Source Profile(s) — the mystery is — if InDesign's Export PDF process is not tagging my images properly, then HOW can it make a proper follow-up Conversion to my print space?
    The only hope I have of making sense of this is if I can follow the color management chain and end up in the desired tagged print space.

    In my four previous books, I've Placed my tagged Gray Dot Gain 20% images in InDesign, Exported to PDF to No Color Conversions, Embed and Preserve Profiles, and handed off CMYK PDFs (apparently based on my Working CMYK profile).
    Those printed beautifully, but I am trying to learn and it makes sense I could Convert my PDF to the 100% print space.

    It is possible to convert your CMYK PDF to Dot Gain 20% in Acrobat, but I
    was not happy with the appearance on screen the last time I tried it ( I
    think I lost my 100% K levels)
    That sounds like Acrobat was basing the Conversion on a wrong Source Profile (which is my concern for not being able to verify the profiles it is spitting out in my PDF tests).
    It seems if I Converted my InDesign book to sRGB, and Converted all my Gray images to sRGB — that InDesign could Export a tagged sRGB PDF that Acrobat could Convert to Gray Dot Gain 20% (and I could follow the chain).
    Then again, I wish I knew what I was doing here...

  • What is wrong with Indesign's PDFs?

    Hi, anybody out there?
    I am using Indesign 2.0.1 (no need to change it, worked properly for our purposes) and produced PDFs from it for printing and for eBooks. No problem with the PDFs for printing, but for the eBook: suddenly eMag Creator and its hotline (the Danish eBook making program) does not accept the Indesign produced PDFs (both in versions 4 or 5). They say, there is a mistake in the PDFs (I use the reader version 10) produced by Indesign but are unable to detect it.
    We are using XP; Microsoft and Java files are the newest uploads.
    We are trying to solve this now since 2 days and the upload should happen Thursday night - now it's Saturday.

    Hi Bob,
    seems to be at least someone out there. As I never realized any problems with "that old Indesign version" I do not have the need to buy something new. The have accustomed to minor Indesign performance problems (where is the cursor at the bottom of the page?) and will probably buy sonn a newer version. Hope it works at least that fine.
    With regard to my problem, I got the hibnt to copy the Indesign produced file to another folder and habe a look exchange not needed Arial bold fonts.
    It worked - now I know more than the guys in Danmark.

  • Problem with URL in InDesign to PDF

    I have two weblinks in my InDesign document.
    When I output to an interactive PDF and open in Adobe Reader, the link is there but I get a message that "Acrobat does not allow connection to [URL]"
    I have a clickable link in the document, then I right-click on it and in the interactive box do "Add URL"  I've done it several times, so I'm confident the URL is correct; one of them is my own website.
    What am I doing wrong?

    However, I'm opening this in Adobe Reader — I wouldn't expect that the people I'm sending this to would have or know how to use Adobe Acrobat.
    I did open it in Acrobat Professional and it asked me if I wanted to allow the connection — when I clicked yes, it went to the website. BTW, it's a link to allow people to download Adobe Reader — it's very annoying that this PDF won't open properly and play the video in Quicktime player on the Mac (which is what all of the people I'll send this to are using).
    So your thought was right on the money, but it still doesn't work in Adobe Reader, which is the only way anyone can read this document.  Ironic that the only link I really need is one for them to obtain Adobe Reader and yet, Adobe Reader won't allow them to use the link!
