  • Weird Problem With Dates in Finder and Mail

    I have a MBPr running 10.8.2 which is exhibiting a very strange behaviour related to dates.
    Initially, the problem manifested in Mail where the date shown in the message list for each message was exactly the same, regardless of the date sent/received. Oddly, this problem only manifested in the "new" mail view. Switching to "Classic" view in Mail prefs works fine. This seemed odd enough, but only related to mail.
    Then, I noticed the exact same date was the Creation, Modification, and Last Opened date for many files (including all of the .emlx files in the Mail folder) as shown in the preview column in the Finder's column view. Oddly, the exact same files show different Creation/Modification/Opened dates when viewed in a Get Info window or when listed in the Terminal with ls -l.
    Clearly there is some kind of issue with a cache, or an index of some sort that is accessed by the Finder and/or Mail. I'm attaching a screenshot of the Get Info window and the Finder preview column for a file. Thanks for any info anyone can shed on this.

    Embarrassingly, the "More Like This" box to the immediate right of my post shows a discussion titled "Incorrect dates in column view preview" that fixed the problem.
    How this affects the "new" view in Mail and not the "Classic" view is beyond me, but I'm also beyond caring at this point.

  • Search in Finder and Mail for files in 2011 not working

    I do get search results just not for anything created after December 31st 2010. Nothing exists in the search for 2011. I have updated all software and nothing seems to work. My date and time are correct. I can have a file on the desktop or in my inbox and the system can not find it. I do search every day and it is getting labor intensive to do it all by hand. Any ideas?

    I figured out a fix for my machine. I went into the system preferences, to the spotlight. Went to the privacy settings added my drive and closed to save the settings then reopened it and I removed it from Privacy. This caused it to re-indexed all my files (it took over an hour) but I even created new files and was able to find them in spotlight and in my email.

  • Corrupted icons in Finder and Mail

    My icons for files and folders often get corrupted as shown here:
    http://www.math.uni-hamburg.de/spag/dm/corrupted_icons.pdf
    The problem is cured (temporarily) by a reboot, but not by relaunching the Finder. Strangely, the problem "spreads" like an infection: at first, only the icons in one folder viewed in the Finder are corrupted, then quickly more and more get corrupted. The bad icons even infiltrate some applications, like Mail - see the bottom two icons in the rightmost screen shot of the link. When a single file has a bad icon, I can "delete" that icon in the info window for that file, and it reverts to normal. This does not seem to work when the corrupted icon is that of a folder.
    I have a suspicion that the problem tends to spread from "old" files (never folders) that pre-date OSX. But that's not much more than speculation, since many of my files are of that type. Also, the problem has spread to other macs that I "migrated" to from the one originally affected.
    Any help at all - such as suggestions of how to cleanse my Mac so that this does not reoccur - would be greatly appreciated...
    Sandy

    The problem is still not understood, but it seems I've been able to get rid of it. Many years ago (quite possibly still under OS9) I had given some folders special icons to make them stand out visually. I then put those folders in the toolbar of the Finder window (even now under Leopard, where dragging folders to the toolbar no longer seems to be officially encouraged but still works). In search of "anything unusual" to do with icons I now removed those pictures from the folders in their info field (so now they look normal again, like any other folders), and haven't had any more corrupted icons since. This has now been stable for about a fortnight, while before this measure I had newly corrupted icons about twice a week at least.
    Caveat: I didn't remove those custom-made icons from all my folders: I simply forgot two of them (which, however, were changed later I think). So even if restoring generic icons to some folders solved the problem, the problem will most certainly be difficult to reproduce.

  • Advanced Index Search Crashes Acrobat Pro and Reader

    I have a problem of which I've not been able to find a similar past experience. Acrobat Pro 9.5 and Reader X both crash on a Windows 7 PC whenever I initiate a search using our Adobe-created index files. These index files work for every other computer on our Network and all relevant users have the same permissions to access the indexes. I've trashed the preferences folder and even uninstalled and reinstalled both programs. The functions are not relegated to a particular user on the machine as the problem is the same across the board, so I've narrowed the problem down to being on the PC itself. I've not seen this as a known issue anywhere nor seen people write about this as a past issue. Any and all help appreciated, and thanks in advance!

    Bump. Y'know, for kids.

  • Problems with finder and mail. Lion no mountain lion. Sorry HELP!

    I came through here as cannot open in Lion.
    When down loaded up dates, had many problems in lion 10.7.5
    when up loading photos and the drop down menure in finder opens, To chose file , When clicking on file another opens,
    When exporting same problem , click on folder and another folder opens , I have to go through this again to get in the right folder.
    i also have mail issures. and up loading issus that no one ells ssem to have that dont use mac.
    When up loading to pixoto. the up loads on large files are all triped colours.
    I enterd the canon marathon, dead line 9pm.. I had so much stress as their up loader would not start. i had to send e mail.
    E mails :  I have to clck view and tick view by date every time now, Its unstable , never stays the same.
    Cannot enlarge enough to read the mail Got new galses but the enlarge only 3 steps. Same for the desk top. Un user friendly for shot sighted people.
    please help resolve this , Cost my an over draft to get this mad book pro.

    GMail works just fine in Mail 6 here. In what way is it not working there? As to your Canon scanner, that is a Canon issue. If Canon has opted not to update their software, you can remove it and try scanning directly from Image Capture instead.
    Regarding downgrading, unless you have a backup made right before installing ML, it's not an easy task. You would have to erase the hard drive, reinstall the previous system, reinstall all your apps and then import data from somewhere. And some data formats have changed - Mail, for example, has had slight changes to its mailboxes in both the last two major system upgrades. The only way to import messages that aren't still stored on the server into an older version of Mail is one at a time.

  • Finder (and Mail) display corrupted while scrolling

    Hi all,
    Recently Finder is behaving strangely. While I'm scrolling through large lists of folders the text and images are getting bulky and dark, this goes for the scrollbars aswel. Mail is also affected. Could the latest Java-update have something to do with it? Or my DVI-connector from the Cinema Display? Does anybody recognize this problem or better yet have a solution for it?
    Examples are to be found here:

    Thanks in advance!

    Sorry, no solution, but my computer has been doing this since day 1. Haven't been able to find any solution. I do use the Pantone Huey to calibrate my monitor. I only see this in finder windows.

  • Lion and Mail menu bars

    Does anyone else think the Mac team got in a hurry on Lion?  Why are they using the old trash can and info button in the menu bars. In fact, all the icons in the finder and mail menu bars look old fashioned. I'll bet Steve didn't see them!

    No. Snow Leopard's Mail isn't compatible w/Lion's, so it needs to do the conversion to be usable. Maybe you should consider trimming the number of e-mails you've storred.

  • Lumia 830 search button

    Ihave purchased alumia 830 after my Lumia 920 screen was broken due to a fall on ground.
    Now ihave put a glass screen protection on it to protect it but the search button only doesn't work.. The back button isn't working 100% also but its ok the problem is the search button completely unusable and i fear if i remove the protection the device will break like my previous 920
    Should i send it to repair or this is hardware problem in 830

    Hi, hasn216. You don't need to send the phone in for repair. Also, this is not a hardware issue. Check this link: The back key and search key of my Lumia 830 don’t respond properly. What can I do?. We suggest not using any protective film or tape on the phone's screen as the window Glass is Corning with E2C – easy to clean. Another workaround is swiping over the back key rather than tapping on it. Should you have additional questions, do not hesitate to post it here or if you have other questions, post it on the most appropriate board. BTW, the link is applicable regardless of location.
    Thanks for the insights, farby and djsubha007. Keep it up! ;-)

  • Rename Layers: Find and Replace style renaming

    In Illustrator, you can use the following to find and replace layer names:
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    // name indexed object
    var layernames = {
    'Bob':'Bob Front'
    // loop through all layers
    for (var i = 0; i < doc.layers.length; i++)
    //Set up Variable to access layer name
    var currentLayer = app.activeDocument.layers[i];
    if (layernames[currentLayer.name])
      currentLayer.name = layernames[currentLayer.name];
    In this script "Bob" will become "Bob Front". Is there something similar for Photoshop. Looking at the Photoshop scripting guide, this script should work as the active App document and layers methods exist in Photoshop.

    c.pfaffenbichler wrote:
    What are
    var layernames = {
    'Bob':'Bob Front'
    and
    if (layernames[currentLayer.name])
    supposed to do? Is that even JavaScript? …
    Hi c.pfaffenbichler, yes, this is pure Javascript.
    Try this little example:
    var layernames = {'Bob':'Bob Behind'};
    alert(layernames['Bob']);
    // a variant
    layernames['Bob'] = 'Bob in the middle';
    alert("a variant:  " + layernames['Bob']);
    // another variant
    layernames.Bob = 'Bob Front';
    alert("another variant:  " + layernames.Bob);
    @big_smile,
    your posted script works with photoshop (if you have only artlayers and one or more layers named with Bob)
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    // name indexed object
    var layernames = {'Bob':'Bob Front'};
    // loop through all layers
    for (var i = 0; i < doc.layers.length; i++) {
        //Set up Variable to access layer name
        var currentLayer = app.activeDocument.layers[i];
        if (layernames[currentLayer.name]) {
            currentLayer.name = layernames[currentLayer.name];
    All you have to do is to loop trough all artlayers (and layersets), but here is Javascript a slowly variant. Use ActionManager code instead. You will find many examples here in forum.
    Have fun

  • Safari - and Mail - install packages

    Hello,
    I’m having a problem with Safari on my PowerBook G4 1Ghz (OSX 10.3.9) and would like to do a re-install of the application. I had a problem with iTunes a few weeks ago (when I updated to 10.3.9 actually) and was able to re-install iTunes itself quite simply using the disks provided with my Mac.
    iPhoto, iMovie, iCal, iSync and iTunes can be found in the (invisible) folder System->Install->Packages on Disk 1.
    GarageBand and iDVD are in the (invisible) folder Images of Disk 2.
    But no trace of Safari… and Mail either.
    So, where can one find the Install packages for Safari and Mail on the OX 10.3 Disks ?
    Do I have to re-install the System itself ? (I’ve tried that and it didn’t work).
    Jean-Philippe Gervais

    Right, problem is, both are UPDATES, not the original app.
    I've tried to work with those (if you install the 1.2 update then run the "Software Update" Item of OS X, you'll get the newer ones).
    The thing is, what I'm looking for is a Safari vX.X that is an application install package and not simply an update... even if you can (somehow) work with them.
    For exemple, the Safari I'm working with right now, when you right-click on a link, tells me "Localized String Not Found" all the items on the pop-up menu, even if the items works... (My OS is localized in French and the updates were US ones)...
    So what I'm REALLY looking for is a way to re-install Safari from the ground up as it where.
    I've found -and tried- v1.0 but it won't install on my system (10.3.4 is the earliest I've got).
    So ?

  • Hi, first time on help!  how do I find and download the latest version of itunes on my iphone 4. just tried to sync with itunes and error stated I need newest version!!!

    Hi, can anybody help!
    Just tried to sync my iphone in itunes and received an error(need the latest version of itunes)
    I have tried to download this but no joy. I need 11.1.4
    Can anybody tell me whare to find and download this on my phone.

    It is telling you that you need to install the latest version of itunes on your computer, not your iphone
    Itunes is bult into the iphones operating system.  You do not download itunes at all on your iphone.

  • I'm a MB Pro beginner (after 25 years with PC). I have an Iomega ext HD, but how do get it indexed. I'm trying searches in Finder, and it says "searching Iomega drive" - but I don't think it's indexing. How do I force it to index?

    Well I'm leaning the other way. I think my present MBP will be the last Apple product I buy.
    With the way Apple is going, all New Mac computers are sealed unit that don't allow the user to upgrade them in any way. They are getting more expensive initially. They are impossible to fix, even by Apple. All the parts are either soldered to the Logic Board or glued inside the case parts. The add on warranty only covers manufacturing defects and is expensive. And to fix one out of waranty is close to if not more then a new system.
    The only thing different in a Mac, and most other products Apple sells, is the operating system and the cases they come in. As for the OS both have their glitches and at this time there are no viruses that infect OS X. There is more software available for Windows. More choices as to what hardware you can use or upgrade to at a later date.
    Mac computers are becoming large iPads or iPhones with built in keyboards.
