Inexpensive component video capture

Is there anything out there which will inexpensively capture HDTV over component video or HDMI to Mac?
Thanks

David, please. Someone asks a legitimate question:
Is there anything out there which will inexpensively capture HDTV over component video or HDMI to Mac? \[...\] I just want to get some stuff off an old TIVO unit that doesn't have TIVO-To-Go.
There are no illegal activities involved or implied. You may legitimately make a copy off your TiVo even using TiVo's own supplied software. Or burn it to a DVD. I'm sure you're intimately familiar with the Betamax case.
The OP did not say they desired to edit it, post it, sell it, etc. Simply transfer it. Let's try not to become the thought police...

  • Pinnacle Video Capture for Mac

After talking with a bunch of salesmen (considering getting a DvD writer), I took the advice of someone in the Apple Store and bought a Pinnacle Video Capture for Mac to copy my laserdiscs. It was $100 before tax, and didn't do stuff I don't plan on doing anyway. I did spend another $25 to get an S-video cable.
I installed the software and connected it up to my LD. I started capturing the movie, and selected S-Video (although in the small window they showed, I didn't see any difference between that and video out. I selected a max time from a limited selection, and let it record.
After a while, I went downstairs and saw that the audio and video were not synchronized at all. I let it continue.
After a while I came down again, and the movie was finished, so I stopped it. I found the MP4 - it was in the iTunes movie directory, and played it in iTunes. I fast-forwarded it to near the end, the voice and video were way off-set.
I haven't tried burning this yet.
Quicktime player doesn't think this is a valid movie file. I selected "open with" and "other" and the recommended applications had iMovie greyed out.
Why in the world would the audio and video record at different speeds?
Do I have to buy software to edit the movie down to the correct size?
    My Mac has:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B03
    SMC Version: 1.21f4
I noticed the Pinacle Video Capture program was still running, so I tried to quit it, and got a window asking for my administrator ID and passsword to allow Pinnacle Video Capture to make changes. Why?

The audio drifted out of sync because the Dazzle doesn't support locked audio. For short videos (say, under 10 minutes) this won't be very noticeable but when you capture longer videos it becomes progressively worse over time.
What do you want to do with your Laserdisk copies? Watch them on your iPod? Edit and/or burn to DVD?
A device like the Canopus ADVC-110 will do the video/audio conversion properly, keeping the audio and video in sync regardless of the length of your video. It converts to DV, not to MP4, and you would use it with iMovie or Final Cut (not iTunes). However you can export your video from iMovie or Final Cut to iPod/AppleTV formats.
The Dazzle device will not work directly with iMovie or Final Cut.
ps. If all you really want to do is transfer your Laserdisc videos to DVDs, it will be a whole lot faster & simpler to get a DVD player/recorder that has analog inputs and record directly to DVDs. There are many brands & models to choose from and many good ones are as inexpensive as the $100 you spent on the Pinnacle converter.

  • Elgato video capture versus digital 8 camcorder to import hi 8 movies

    Hi!
I have hi 8 video tapes which i want to import into my MacBook.
I would like to work on them with iMovie 09, cut them, set titles etc. put music on and so on.
Earlier I plugged my hi 8 camcorder into my panasonic DMR E85H dvd recorder with built in hdd.
Then i importet them via handbrake into my MacBook.
Then i importet them into iMovie 08 an did some cutting and so on.
Then i recognized, that there where horizontal interferences in the movie.
On the dvds the video is ok!
It doesn´t matter if i play the videos in Quicktime or in iTunes or iMovie.
If i would use a Elgato Video Capture to import or a digital 8 camcorder to import the videos to my MacBook would i be able to get a better result?
Which one should i prefer - i have to buy each of them!
Would the size of the camcorder-imported videos be bigger then with the Elgato device?
    Now i´m using iMovie 09.
Thanks a lot for helping me out!

Based on your comments about horizontal interferences, it may be that you are seeing interlace artifacts. The solution may be to deinterlace the clips.
You might try checking the settings in handbrake to deinterlace.
You might also take the clip you have produced in HB and deinterlacing using a free tool like MPEG Streamclip or JES Deinterlacer.
Your MPEG2 on DVD is already compressed from the original on tape. Then HandBrake decompresses and recompresses it to h.264. You generally want to cut out compression steps in your workflow whenever possible, because each generation of compression will introduce noise and loss.
You could also reimport from DVD using MPEG Streamclip (and the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component). You could deinterlace at this step if needed.
You could certainly import through a camcorder with passthru capability. It will be DV which will be a very high data rate and potentially high quality, but it will never be higher quality than the underlying analog material. But you will have eliminated a compression step so you will be closer to the original.
ElGato products will certainly work as well. I use the ElGato EyeTV hybrid to capture from a VHS Deck, as well as to record high definition TV shows. My ElGato will capture to MPEG2, although the newer models may capture directly to MPEG4 (not sure). You would then use the ElGato software to export to iMovie in an editable format such as h.264 or Apple Intermediate Codec.

  • How do i stream my iMac screen to a device that accepts component video only

I have a new iMac (2015) and I want to send my screen from my mac to a video switcher called a NewTek Tricaster 40. It only accepts component or composite video input. I want to send my iMac's screen to it in real time so I can incorporate it into my live video productions. I have attempted to use several HDMI to component converters and none have worked. I am using the Kanex Pro HDMI to Component Converter to convert the HDMI out from two HD camcorders to component and sending that into my Tricaster 40. It is seeing the signal just fine and giving me solid HD video. So I attempted to use the same Kanex Pro for the iMac. First I used apple's lightning to HDMI cable then plugged that HDMI into another Kanex Pro HDMI to component converter. No dice. I tried all the component video settings: 1080p 30PsF, 1080 24PsF, 1080i, 720p, 720/30p, 720/24p. None worked

Next I purchased an apple lightning to DVI adaptor. Then I plugged the DVI into this Lindy DVI to component converter. It also failed at all resolutions. None worked for SD resolutions either.

After hunting for a solution someone suggested that HDCP protection might be my problem. Apparently in an effort to keep people form pirating movies Microsoft and apple use HDCP to keep people form making this conversion? I'm nor sure how this works I just know that I am leagaly allowed to incorporate brief news clips into my news comentary on my youtub channel so long as I cite them and add to them substantially. I do both. So is HDCP my issue? If so what is the work around?

NewTek has a program called IVGA that will allow me to share my screen over my local network but the frame rate is horribly choppy and is not useful for capturing video clips form youtube or game play.
Bottom line how do I stream high quality (720 /24p minimum) video from my iMac to a device that only accepts component video in.

I did end up using an apple thunderbolt to DVI.

    On my iMac:
I had to go into my device settings > Display
then I set the "Optimize for:" to "CAT-6066"
after that I selected the "Scaled" option right underneath
then i selected 1080i because the Kanex Pro is designed to convert 1080i into component
I was then able to get my NewTek Tricaster 40 to recognize that component signal from the Kanex Pro and add it to my production as 1080i or as 1080p/30. The frame rate looks great and the video quality is very smooth and in real time.

  • Component Video/Stereo Audio

Is there any way to get component video and analog stereo out of the new AppleTV with a apple converter? Need this to go into an existing 16x16 component matrix switcher.

The problem you will encounter doing this is that component doesn't carry HDCP, and therefore any HDCP content will not play on your Apple tv.
Not quite true, Winston. Check out the HDFury line of products. Their units include HDCP support. However, like most other such devices, the HDFury units do not include scaling capabilities. Therefore, you must be sure that the device to which you wish to connect it supports the TV2's 720p output as an input option. (E.g., my old Philips HD ready TV only supported 480p and 1080i but not 720p video.) Also of interest is the fact that some of these units also support HDMI to stereo/digital 5.1 audio via an analog/digital combo 3.5 mm cable.
In any event, I'm presenting the March SJAUG TV2 demonstration for our user group and just purchased the HDFury3 "Advanced Kit" in order to capture TV2 firmware menu images for inclusion in my resource presentation. It worked great! Both the HDFury2 and HDFury3 have switchable Component/RGBHV output options depending on your needs and connector adapter you use. Unfortunately, owing to the popularity of this device and sales demands here in the US, I had to order my kit from the Taiwan manufacturer.

  • Plug-in for StarTech Video Capture Card

StarTech'website shows their ECHDCAP ExpressCard video capture card supports Adobe Premiere CS5 plug-in for editing. I talked to a Tech at StarTech and he said the card should work with Premiere Pro CS5 & CS6 but StarTech doesn't support it, and he didn't know where I can get the Premiere SC5 plug-in. Does anyone know what plug-in StarTech is referring to, and where I can get it?
If anyone is currently using the ECHDCAP capture card or the StarTech USB3HDCAP Capture Device, please let me know how you got it working with Premiere Pro.

    Ann & Bill,
I probably should have given you more information. This application is different than what I usually use Premiere for.
One of my hobbies is shooting long range rifles at 1,000 yards. I'm trying to capture the point of impact on steel targets 500 to 1,000 yards away. I've attached my XA10 to my Swarovski spotting scope so I can see the impact. I've been transferring the video from the XA10 to my computer through the USB port, then importing the video into Premiere and adding it to the sequence. By the time I get all this done, then scrub the video to find the frame with the initial BANG, then count 41 frames forward for 870 yards, then scrub the video again to find the impact point, the wind and several other conditions have changed which affect my next shot. this makes for a long and tedious day.
The bottom line is... I'm trying to streamline my workflow so I can capture the video from my XA10 straight to a Premiere sequence, then start scrubbing the video to find the point of impact.
The reason I'm using Premiere is because none of my other programs allow me to scrub with audio.
I would prefer not to spend $600 for a Maxtor MX02 Mini and ExpressCard adapter; especially since it requires 110 volts and that's not available at the shooting range.
If you know of another way to do this, or can recommend an inexpensive program that will allow me to capture audio and video from my XA10 and scrub it with audio, I'd sure appreciate hearing about it.
    Thank you,
    Brian Scura...

  • Video Capture Direct to IPOD

Does anyone know of a way to use an IPOD video as a DVR - without a computer and video capture card. Is there some sort of device one can plug the IPOD into that connects directly to a TV signal (e.g. Composite, RCA, Component, S-video, etc) and would allow you to record that signal directly to the IPOD?

I don't believe such a device exists (yet).
    Cheers!

  • Need component video in - what adapter can I buy?

Here's the deal. We have a flip video camera whose usb "arm" totally broke off. The camera is in good working order, and has a component so you can connect it to a TV to watch your movies off it. Is there any way I can use this instead of the usb "arm?" I am mainly concerned with getting the movies off of it that had not been transferred to the computer yet.
    Thanks!

  • Is there a way of recording component video output to a MacBook Pro

I have a Sony DXC990P video camera head i.e. it has no recorder. It has several output of which component video is regarded as the highest quality. Is there a way recording this output with a MacBook Pro?
    T5G5

The matrox MXO2 is likely what you are referring to. It would be an extremely useful i/o device for you if the price is acceptable. It will have good resale value for a few years too if you ever wanted to get rid of it. With your camera's chip set and resolution of 850 lines you can capture via component to 4:2:2 color space by editing in a codec like DVCPRO 50 which is very efficient and looks great too. It is a big step above anything dv related which is 4:1:1 color space. If you ever drop your video signal down to dv quality you will take a big hit picture quality wise. Another device is the original AJA IO which connects via firewire and gives you component i/o as well as s-video, composite and digital component as well. The AJA IO's are selling on ebay for $600.00 - $750.00. They were around $2500.00 originally. You could also use an AJA LA which is basically the analog side of the IO and they are a little cheaper. Blackmagic multibridge is another product that is similar. These are all pro level equipment. You will need FCP.

  • PC video capture card - Not Applicable?

When I was a Comcast analog customer, I purchased a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1600 video capture card. The unit worked great converting my Media Center PC back into a DVR when my original Dell equipment All-In-Wonder capture card died.
When I was considering switching to Fios, Andrea S. at Verizon told me that there was software I could download so that my vid-cap card would work. I assume she meant that it would unscramble the signal for viewing or recording. Once Fios was installed, Andrea didn't answer my emails any more and recent inquires to Encore about any other devices (like DCT700 or something) have been fruitless.
I hate to take no for an answer!
Isn't there some way for my PC to record Fios video? I would think the most un-elegant solution would be to rent another STB and take the analog output to my PC but then I couldn't program channel changes, etc. There must be something out there that I'm missing.

Any PC card with a QAM tuner can record the SD and HD locals (and music channels) from Verizon FiOS.  Other digital channels such as USA, TNT, SciFi, FX, ESPN, and HBO cannot be tuned because they are encrypted.
My favorite PC QAM tuner is the HDHomerun ($160) because it has two ATSC/QAM tuners and excellent, cross-platform software support.  It works very well with Vista Media Center.  If you really want an internal solution, take a look at the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 ($120); this PCIe card has less software support, and may require the Vista Media Center TV pack.  Both of these solutions can record two different SD or HD locals from FiOS at once.  Once again, the QAM tuners in these products can only record unencrypted channels, which consist of channels 1-50 plus the HD locals and music channels.  The Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 also has an s-video input to record the s-video (SD) output from a Verizon set-top box.
If you want to record high-definition directly from the Motorola HD STB, you could buy the Hauppauge HD PVR ($200).  This is a USB device that connects to your computer; it records the HD component video output and optical audio output from another device (such as the FiOS HD STB) to your computer's hard drive.  That product was used to create this video, as well as most of the high-definition PS3 and Xbox360 gameplay videos on Youtube.  In my experience, this product can be a bit buggy, especially when recording Dolby Digital.  It is more reliable if you will settle for stereo sound.  Picture quality is better than you see in the Youtube videos -- Youtube recompresses and degrades quality -- but not quite as good the original output.
When I want a program on my computer, I simply download the SD/HD recording from my TivoHD's hard drive.  I then edit and/or burn to DVD or Blu-ray disk.  The ability to download recordings directly from the DVR is one of the features unique to TiVo. Screenshot:

  • Importing Analog Component Video

I'm using a Sony J-30 deck to import Beta SP and want to import at a higher quality than the Firewire out in the back. I was wondering if I could use the Component Video out instead? If so, what type of hardware do I need to convert to a digital signal? My hope is to be able to import as DVC50.

Thanks, I installed a Blackmagic HD extreme 2 and am having capture problems. I can control the deck from fcp, but no audio or video comes through. The only way I can import is by using capture now and the clip Import is all black with no audio. Have tried multiple import settings, but still no luck. Please shine some light on me.

  • I need a video capture device for downloading Band and family video tapes.

Hi,  I need to download some old video tapes before they turn to dust.  Are there any fairly inexpensive video capture devices that work well with the Imac?
    Thanks

Are they VHS video cassettes or something like 8MM camcorder tapes?
If they're camcorder tapes, usually it's best to try to buy an old video camera (MUST have FIREWIRE port).
Then you can play the tape in the camera and capture from the Firewire. Also important, if you have a 2010 (maybe 2009?) or newer iMac, you'll need a cable that is Firewire 400 to fit the camera at one end and Firewire 800 at the other end to connect to the iMac.

    formats=new VideoFormat(VideoFormat.RGB);
    model = new ProcessorModel(ml,new Format[]{formats}, new FileTypeDescriptor(FileTypeDescriptor.{color:#ff6600}MSVIDEO{color}));
    p=Manager.createRealizedProcessor(model);
    source=p.getDataOutput();
    sink = Manager.createDataSink(source, new MediaLocator("file:///c:/Adiyae.{color:#ff6600}avi{color}"));
    p.addControllerListener(this);
    p.realize();
Now the file is getting created with its size depending upon how long i capture..This is fine..But when i try to play the file using a media player it doesnt open.. when i tried opening it with JMStudio i get the following message..
    {color:#ff6600}Controller Error:
Failed to realize:Failed to parse the input media..
{color}Also can you tell me how to choose the FileTypeDescriptors for a particular video format.. The only FileTypeDescriptor that works with mine is the MSVIDEO..
    Thanks in advance..

  • Windows Video Capture Cards for FME 3

What are some video capture cards that accept DV i.Link (IEEE 1394) inputs and work with FME 3? The hassle with Windows and DV is just too annoying.

    ello,
My name is Felix Kolotinsky and I am FAE at AVerMedia Technologies, Inc USA office.
AVerMedia has a product AVerTVHD DVR  that works with Flash Media Live Encoder 3.1, AVerTVHD DVR is capable to capture HD quality up to 1080i from build int HDMI, Component YPbPr and Analog from S-Video and Composite.
If you are interested, here is link to product description http://www.avermedia-usa.com/AVerTV/product/ProductDetail.aspx?Id=482
Below is screenshot that I took from FMLE using AVerTVHD DVR, my source was HDMI from Direct TV Set top box, in this case I was encoding in 1080i source into 720x480, you can Encode up to 1080i, however this requires Quad Core CPU
If you are interested, please contact me directly: [email protected] and I will assist you with setup.
    Enjoy,

  • Duel video capture cards and Windows 7 MCE

Hello, I'm wondering why WMC will only see (1) video capture card, when (2) are installed?
I have DirecTV with HD STB (2) which do not require tuners, they have HDMI output (or component RGB output), so a capture card is what I'm using to bring video to my computer. WMC works great with (1) card, but won't see a second card installed.
I have searched TGB and found this link:
    http://web.archive.org/web/20130727050420/http://experts.windows.com/frms/windows_entertainment_and_connected_home/f/23/t/103542.aspx
and have applied the changes recommended, but still it won't work. The article states the problem is NO 2nd PVR is installed and the steps to install it. I've rebooted and still don't have a 2nd instance of a PVR.
Hauppauge is no help at all, gives me the same instructions...
What am I missing here, possibly roll back the driver? I installed the current version...

    Hi,
Please check the following information to see if it helps.
    1. Check if the hardware is Windows 7 compatible.
    2. Update the Video capture card driver.
