Input effects on recording...

When I am recording effects to tape and using a latency free software program for tracking like RME's total mix or MOTU's mixer, though I am not hearing the effect (ie:compressor) during recording am I causing a timing problem to the track just because I have inserted a plugin to the input track?
In other words... I want to track compression or guitar amp simulation but use TotalMix for monitoring. When I am done with the recording I want to go back and hear the effects of the track printed but also for it to be in timing with the rest of the tracks. I hope I am making sense. Any suggestions?

The only problem with this is that once you record with compression, or any other effect, that's it. Putting them on the track inserts at least gives you the freedom to change things as you wish. As long as you're not using any mastering plug-ins while recording, it shouldn't really be affecting your latency. I use GAP, compressors and other things (non-mastering) on the plug-ins insert without any further latency problems.
Not to mention that it really wouldn't be any different, latency-wise, if you did put them on the input inserts because you're still generating the effects.

  • Will my insert effect be recorded to the audio track or not?

I'm seeing conflicting information about this, but have done a couple of rudimentary tests and it seems that when I add, say, a compression effect on an audio track insert for guitar that it doesn't actually record it. I get only the guitar's original source input even though I can hear the effect when recording. Am I limited to applying effects like this only after the recording is done???

if you use audio object (audio tracks) with software monitoring you will not record destructive audio. instead logic just records the dry signal and routes through the insert.
if you use audio input objects with inserts your audio is recorded destructively.
ease your mind and check the manual for your conflicting information bouts.

  • I'm getting a random beep sound when I hit the input button to record a turntable

I'm getting a random beep sound when I hit the input button to record a turntable & mixer plugged into the mbox thats bleeding into the recording. How can I stop this? Please help me. It's happening if I'm recording or not, as soon as I hit the (I) input it beeps randomly.

    Thanks Jim,
Seems to be this song. Other projects don't have this issue.
I even took and opened the project on another computer, bounced it again and got the same "click" at the same 13 second area.
I've bounced each track solo, listened and NO click at the 13 sec. mark
    No third party plug-ins.
The click doesn't land close to any beginning or end of a region.
Final mix down looks good, no peaking over 0db.
    This is making me nuts!

  • Mute the input monitor while recording? Should be easy, right?

First off, here's an illustration of what I'm doing:
    http://www.thesoundofmachines.com/re-amp-image.jpg
I'm sending an already recorded guitar take through a cigar-box amp, then re-recording it back into a new track in the logic session at the same time.
I did search the forums & the user manual. I must be loosing it. How do I mute the input signal while it's being recorded? I need the input to be recorded, but not monitored. Otherwise, I'm drowning in a terrible feedback loop.
I turned off "software monitoring" to no avail. What am I missing?
    Thanks in advance...
    -Should Know This Stuff

Heya- take a look at this:
    http://www.thesoundofmachines.com/re-amp-image.jpg
You can see it's just a little Edirol USB interface.
    http://www.roland.com/products/en/UA-1A/index.html
I know! I need better! I just don't have extra money at the moment.
So any tips or suggestions? (other than "buy a new interface...")
    Thanks!

  • Input not routing through effects when recording

    Hello,
I have a strange problem with Logic 8 all of a sudden. I can no longer hear my input during recording. The input is not flowing through the channel strip effects nor is it routing over to out 1-2 during recording. Everything works fine during playback, but not recording anymore. I am using Logic Pro 8.1, Macbook Pro OSX 10.5.2, Motu Ultralite. What happened was, I powered up the Motu interface at the same time Logic was starting up and received a few errors during startup. I clicked continue, everything seemed to be ok, but I now can't hear anything during recording as stated above. I tried reinstalling Logic to see if that would work but it didn't. Any help would be appreciated! TIA!

    Hey guys,
I took a shot in the dark and clicked "Initialize all except key commands" Under Logic Preferences and that fixed it. Not sure what happened, but for those of you who may encounter this, that is the fix.

  • How do I select a midi input device and record midi?

I have several midi input devices connected to my computer. I use them regularly with Digital Performer. I am trying to record a single midi track in Garage Band using an Oxygen 8 keyboard. In the preferences GB says that it sees 7 midi devices. How do I route midi with Garage Band and how do I tell Garage band which midi device to record from? When I create a midi track (well...I think that it is a midi track) and I try to record I do not see any midi notes being recorded.
Searching the help file for midi provided surprisingly little information. I am sure that this is simple stuff...perhaps so simple that I am missing something obvious.

Yes, if the controller sends the right MIDI messages
What do you mean by "the right midi messages"?
I have a virtual instrument (with for example) a delay effect knob. I would like to turn a knob on my midi controller and adjust the delay in the virtual instrument (as I can in just about any other sequencer). Can GarageBand do this, if so, how?

  • Output Plug-In Effects without Recording (While Recording!)??

I am using Logic as sort of a MainStage/Logic hybrid: I am recording live performances on multiple tracks (using a Tascam M-164UF mixing board with multiple outs via USB 2.0). At the same time, I am routing plug-in effects (such as delay) through a MOTU Ultralite on Firewire bus back into the mixing console.
This all works splendidly. However, I do not want to record any audio on channel strip tracks that I am only using for effects; I just want to software monitor. For example, I am sending an AUX output from the Tascam board into an audio track containing a delay plug-in, than routing its output via the Ultralite into a channel on the Tascam. But I don't want to record on this track while recording other tracks.
Hope this makes sense. Any ideas for a simple effective way to achieve this?

I think I answered my own question. The "I" button (input monitoring) button seems to achieve this. If anyone has any other hints regarding this or a better method, it would be appreciated. In the meantime, I will read more about the input monitoring button, and will mark this as answered.

  • I can hear clean AND preamp guitar effects while recording

    Hi all,
Just started to use LPX. I am using an Apogee Duet audio interface to record my guitar but notice that I seem to have two sounds overlapping when recording my electric guitar: the preamp effects version (distortion in this instance) and a clean version.
I've looked through my various books etc and can't seem to see how to avoid this so I can just hear the distortion I want while recording - can anyone help??

So you hear the signal both from the Apogee directly (clean) and what comes out of Logic (distorted).
So you must find out how to disable direct monitoring through the Apogee. Sorry, I don't know the Apogee in detail,
but I'm sure it can be done. And take a look here: http://www.apogeedigital.com/knowledgebase/all/input-monitoring-the-apogee-way/

  • "printing" effects when recording

How can I record with plugins like the compressor or guitar amp pro and have these effects on the actual recording so I can then go back and remove those plugins to save a little cpu? (other than muting all other tracks and bouncing) Is there a way to route whatever track I'm inputting to another track and record into the new track(aux track maybe-but I can't seem to create an aux track with a rec button)?

You have a couple of options:
    1) Freeze the track and locate the freeze file in the session folder and reimport it. This can be a little tricky for several reasons but works.
    2) Solo that individual track and perform the bounce function and select the option that allows you add that file back to the session. You had already mentioned this method in your request.
    3) Assign the output of the track to a bus and then create a new track and select that bus as the input for the new track. Record enable the new track and begin recording the output of the effected track to the new track.

  • Setting input level when recording

Is there a way to set the input level in Audition when recording? I can't seem to find it if it's there.
Here's the setup: Audition is installed on a new Dell Vostro (plenty of RAM and speed) with an M-Audio Delta 1010 LT card. The input is coming directly from a broadcast console at a radio station. Audition is used to record incoming phone calls along with the DJ's mic for playback later: DJ mic on left channel, incoming call on right channel.
Broadcast consoles are different beasts from recording consoles. The input channels of a broadcast console do not have variable/selectable pads or gain... so the audio signal is fairly hot.
The 1010 LT card has a "control panel mixer" but it seems to have no affect whatsoever on the input level. As a result, the signal clips when it's recorded into Audition.
So... is there a way to set the input level in Audition when recording?

If you are using a soundcard with input from pro console you need one that accepts pro levels I'm afraid! You will need to attenuate the input to the Delta 1010 by some external means like inline 10 - 14dB attenuators for instance.

  • Photo booth video effects not recording after upgrade to Lion

I recently upgraded from s.leopard to Lion. Photobooth is working perfectly with the leopard until upgraded to lion, the video effects could not be used and recorded. It only appears in 1 sec when video recording.
I have done the following already according to the forums I read.
    1. the 32 bit mode is not ticked.
    2. disk utility permissions.
and still not working. Any advise? Thanks

The same Lion-problem here. Everything looks just fine until I press record. Then the effect dissappears. I bought my 28" "BigMac" in february this year, and as the problem is mentioned about a year ago, it might be a major problem since no solution is mentioned anywhere.
So, if you guys see or hear (or smell) anything in the direction of a solution, drop a note.

  • Never used microphone input before, sound recorder window okay, no sound output.

Sound from sound recorder input goes nowhere, a sound window is supposed to open, it does not.
There is some software missing in my pavilion g7 laptop.  Media player sound is fine, internet sound
is fine, only sound missing is from the microphone input.  The sound recorder window is open and the
recording bar is moving as the input varies, how do I get the sound to the speakers.  Never used this
option before, it might be defective from the factory.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Problem solved.  You cannot turn on computer with the microphone or other audio cable plugged in.
Otherwise the computer does not respond to the inputs, you have to plug in the microphone or audio
cable after logging in and then a window will open that allows you to select the that input over the default.

  • Digital Inputs do not record over long time periods

I am running Signals Express 2009 with a USB-6009.  I have a project that needs to record the states of 8 digital inputs over a 24 hour period.  The inputs typically do not change state for long periods of time.  When I run the project it does record and gather data if I stop it "soon"(I have gone as long as 30 min.)  When I leave it running overnight it does not appear to record anything.

If you have not already, you should try turning off display updates in the "Operate »Update Signal Views While Running" menu item.  Set this to Update None.  Also, turn off "Prepare log data for viewing" under the Logging part in the Tools » Options dialog.
When I ran your project overnight, it ran out of memory.  The first error it threw was "Not enough memory to complete this operation."  The problem was that SignalExpress saved a great deal of data in memory for easy displaying while it's running, but this grows too big when it runs overnight.  The second error was as follows:
    Logging Stopped:
Logging was stopped because an error occurred with a Step in the Project.
If this error is because of a device buffer overflow, you can improve performance by turning off display updates using the "Operate »Update Signal Views While Running" menu item.
You can also change the way signals are logged by changing the Logging Options in the Tools»Options dialog.
Turning off  the "Prepare log data for viewing" will greatly improve performance.

  • Deleting line itmes not effecting condition records -?

    Hi Experts
In my order first time discounts are working fine.
If  I add any new line items then also working fine.
But when I deleted line itmes from the order the discount is not effecting as like previous. That means when ever I deleted line item my condtion records are not reading immediately according to my settings.
If I cahange the quantity again for the remaining line item then its working fine.
    <b>(Hope experts understand this problem)</b>
Do I need to configure some where to effect correctly my condition record or do we need to use any user exit for the cahnge in the order or deleting the line item in the order?
Any thoughts  will be great help ful to me.
    Thanks
    Prasad

    Hi Prasad,
firstly whenever you add a new line item the sytem will automatically calculate the pricing for it , now as you said it is not working when you delete the line item if i am correct then why dont you double click on your line item and go to Conditions tab and there you would find out a option called update , select the second option carry out new pricing and then i think it should give you the new correct pricing.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers

  • Photo Booth Effects While Recording

Is there a way to record video in iMovie with Photo Booth effects? Is there a program, a hack, or just something I have to do in order to have effects if I want to record with iSight?
    Thanks in advance,
    agent6998

Well, I don't want to use software fors screen capture because the frames end up being very slow. And I'm definately not going to aim a camera at my monitor because it will have very bad quality. Also, the only camera I use is the built in i-Sight so I can't move it. But, anymore suggestions? I saw, in the package contents of Photo Booth, a quarts movie that has all the different effects for photo booth. Is there a simple quartz plug-in I can get for iMovie?
