Insert and overwrite keyboard shortcuts making unlinked clips.

I recently switched from Mac to Windows; on the Mac, the insert/overwrite shortcuts would put the clip in the timeline as a linked clip (so the audio and video were considered a single clip). However, after switching to Windows, I've noticed that those shortcuts put the clip in the timeline unlinked, and I don't know how to change that. I'm really hoping to fix it, as it significantly slows down my editing. Thanks.

Hi Jacob,
Click the Linked Selection button. You should be OK after that.
Thanks,
Kevin

  • Keyboard shortcut for selecting clips

I'd like to program a button or buttons on my control surface to select clips in the timeline. Are there keyboard shortcuts for selecting clips? (it's not "x")

    Thanks RedTruck.
The problem with x is that it seems to mark every clip, but I think you may be on to something. Is there a keyboard command for selecting the target track? I could possibly add that command to the macro to make this work....trying to get to mouse-free editing.

  • Problem with "Insert" and "Overwrite Sequence Content"

I'm working with XDCAM footage. I like to take all the individual clips recorded on the XDCAM disc, and after getting them into FCP, taking them and putting them all in a sequence in FCP, then using that sequence as the source in the Viewer. This allows for quick scanning of all the clips, much as is it were a digitized tape.
I recently found the "Insert Sequence Content" and "Overwrite Sequence Content" commands in FCP, and like them in that they actually put the individual clips into my project timeline, and not just the combined sequence (which looks more or less like a nest when dropped into my project sequence).
Here's the problem: When I put IN and OUT points in the timeline, and "Insert or Overwrite Sequence Content" using the sequence containing all the clips, the video tends to be contained to between the IN and OUT points I set in the TIMELINE, but the audio tracks tend to expand past the OUT point I set in the TIMELINE, and I can't figure out why, or how to get around this.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

If you're inserting or overwriting, you're basically pasting the content that you've chosen. I wouldn't think the out point would be recognized, or even wanted. If you copied 5 minutes of clips and inserted it into a sequence with a 4 minute in/out point duration, do you want to only have the first 4 minutes inserted into the sequence? If you only place an in point, it will insert all the clips, starting at that point, and it will take up as much time as the clip content's duration.
    Am I missing something here?

  • What are the F keys for and what are the insert and delete line shortcuts?

I have always had a full keyboard and I'm really missing a few shortcuts I previously had that I used mostly in Quickbooks...mainly using the Control insert combination for inserting a line in General Journal and also the Control delete for deleting a line. Is this just an issue with Quickbooks on a Mac? I hate to say it, but during a period of insanity and persuasion by my accountant, I...GASP, went to a PC from a Mac and now I'm finally back in the family. I've forgotten a lot of what I'd learned in the last several years. Do the F keys have these capabilities or is there some other way? Thank you for any assistance.

Look carefully at the F keys you will see that F1 and F2 will darken and Brighten yur screen F 10 11 and 12 will Mute turn down and turn up your sound.F3 will minimise the screen F4 goes to all your Applications installed.
You need to fool around and see what they all do to help minimize work

  • Insert variable with keyboard shortcut

The only keyboard shortcut I can find to insert a variable is CTRL-0. This colors the left side
of the status bar and gives you the entire list of user variables with -- with "Not Applicable" as the
highlighted choice. It appears that you have to traverse the list with the mouse pointer and
    click on the desired variable.
This is just as cumbersome as calling up the variables pod and double clicking on the
    variable you want.
Is there a way to define a keyboard shortcut to insert a particular variable?

I just updated to 10.0.2 and the behavior is the same.
I can't tell you the version number I had been running because I couldn't find an "About" button.
I thought that FM checked for updates when I installed it from a 10.0 CD. Applications typically check
for available updates when you install and register and let you choose whether to update.
So Adobe doesn't inform you of new FM updates either?
I really appreciate the help I get from this forum. Even though the update installation didn't
say I had to reboot, I'll try that and let you know whether that changes the behavior.
I'd reboot and check right now except that I have a gazillion things open while I work on
    the client's document.
But it's not a life-or-death situation. I may even retain my sanity while trying to figure this out...
    Thanks again,

  • Problem with iPhone and iPad keyboard shortcuts

When I try to access the keyboard shortcuts in either my iPhone 6+, iPad 3 or iPad Air, the sequence Settings>General>Keyboard>Shortcuts causes the devices to go back to the Home Screen.  I spent several hours in a chat with Apple Support, had to go through an iTunes back up on the iPhone and restored it to "new phone" and it fixed the problem on the iPhone, but not on the iPads.  Chatted again today with Support, tried hard reset (press both buttons till Apple logo appears) on the iPad 3 and I could access the shortcuts.  Did the same on the iPad Air with no luck.
Now, one hour after second Support chat,  none of the devices can access the shortcuts.  There must be a problem with iCloud for this to be happening on all 3 devices.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Same problem also and if I restore both the iPhone and iPad as new I
lose a lot of progress in my games.

Does anyone know what the keyboard shortcut is for adding a clip to the queue when importing from a P2 card? Thanks!

  • Maximising windows and important Keyboard Shortcuts in Mountain Lion

Hi - just two questions related to the behaviour of Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
When you minimise a window in Mac OS X, it shrinks down and sits next to the trash. When you want to access it again, you simply click on it and it is maximised again. Can anyone explain to me why, when I have multiple windows open and one minimised, Mac OS X does not always present me with the minimised window when I click on it in the dock? It flicks to another window. This mainly happens when I'm using Word for Mac. To clarify, say I have documents A, B and C open. A and B are both maximised with A at the front and C is minimised. When I click on C to maximise it, there is a short delay and suddenly B appears at the front. So OS X doesn't even take me back to the document I was just viewing, but the random document that just happened to be open in the background. Frustrating enough when I only have three documents open - I'm often using many more and the problem is even more noticeable.
Another frustration I have is not being able to browse quickly between document windows. Windows has a convenient Ctrl+Tab function that allows you to flick between all open windows. OS X has a poor imitation which only allows switching between windows of different applications. If I want to switch between windows of the same application, Cmd+Tab will not allow me to do this. Is there another keyboard shortcut in Mac OS X that will? In previous versions of OS X, I resigned myself to using expose to account for the lack of this function, but now with mission control, all windows are clumped together according to their application - a nice organisational idea in theory perhaps, but rendering mission control completely useless for the functions which expose provided. What am I meant to do if I just happen to want to access the seventh document window that I have open? Mission control shows me barely a sliver of the window's border and no detail of the content whatsoever.
Are there solutions to these problems that inhibit workflow so badly? Are there a whole range of window-switching functions which I simply do not know of? Surely such awkwardness was not what mac is aiming for when designing Moutain Lion.
    Any advice much appreciated.

You can choose to not minimize windows into the app in the Dock System prefs. That will leave it in the Dock as a separate window.
You can cycle between application windows using cmd-`, however they don't cycle to minimized windows.
On a US keyboard, that key is right above the tab key. It is in various other places on other keyboard layouts.
You can change the shortcut in the Keyboard & Text Input section of Keyboard Shortcuts (Keyboard System Prefs). I believe you used to be able to cycle through Minimized windows, but someone decided you minimized them to get them out of the way and removed them from the cycling.
About the only way is to activate Application Exposé and then arrow down to the minimized windows.
When a window is highlighted, you can hit the space bar to "Qucicklook" the window. The Arrow keys will then cycle between minimized windows.

  • Copy and Paste Keyboard Shortcut not working

My copy and paste (Command C) function is not working. Tried to resent in keyboard menu, but it didn't do anything. VERY FRUSTRATING as I use this function all day long in my job. Can somebody help please?

The 'input menu' would put a small flag on the main menu bar and allow
you to click there, and see Keyboard Viewer, and Character Palette. A
small keyboard will appear on the desktop and mirror all keys you use
on the real keyboard. Or not. When they don't work in the Viewer, you
can safely assume they don't work. (Or it is software, vs hardware.)
Someday, when you have time and perhaps some extra hardware, you
may consider making a backup clone of your computer contents on a
    large enough external hard disk drive to support bootable OS X clones;
and also large enough to have more than one partition there, for extras.
Then, do a completely new installation on a 'secure erased' hard disk drive.
And then update it. You could migrate previous user setting info, into the
new installation from an external drive's clone; or if you have extra discover
time, you may find a cure to the underlying problem's cause and use the
clone in the external hard disk drive as a backup. Maybe DiskWarrior?
The problem in the system may be due to at least one possible malady; a
corruption of system data, a bad block on the hard disk drive, or some other
matter that somehow became bigger than life when combined with another.
You may try the SafeBoot mode, repair disk permisions in Disk Utility, and
then try reinstalling the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo update file, on top of it all.
Then when it restarts, run SafeBoot again and re-repair disk permissions.
(But any actual hard disk drive issue may exist and remain unattended.)
Odd problems often are best attacked at a root level, after you have adequate
backup; a bootable clone on supported self-powered external hard disk drive.
    Clone utilities such as SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner are fine tools;
and CCC (bombich software) has evolved to be top-notch with site support.
Glad you were able to remap some keys; I found several links in a search on
how to do that, and had previously posted some URLs to help someone else
on another user forum that covered some angles of resolving keyboard issues.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • New Apple keyboard and the keyboard shortcut tab in prefpane ?

    Hi.
So I bought a new Apple "slim" kayboard, I'm pretty happy with it. The only thing I don't get is that I can't access the "keyboard shortcut" tab in the Keyboard and mouse prefpane.
When I click it, the tab turns grey but I can't enter.
    Is it normal?
ps. of course I didn't the keyboard software update.
    Thanks

That's really strange. Are you sure this has to do with the keyboard? Does it misbehave even after restarting the compter? If you remove the keyboard and plug in your old one instead, does this area of System Preferences work normally again?

  • "Next" and "previous" keyboard shortcuts don't work

Why won't these keyboard shortcuts work for me? THey're indicated in the drop-down "View" menu as an alternative way of navigating backwards and forwards, but *nothing happens* when I try to use them.
    Why not?

I have nearly the same problem, except that "previous" does work for me, but not next. I checked in the Keyboard preference pane and there do not appear to be any conflicting commands there.

  • Fast Forward and Rewind keyboard shortcuts in Log and Capture

In FCP, I want to assign the Fast Forward and Rewind buttons (in the Log and Capture mode) to buttons on the keyboard. I've assigned the functions using the Keyboard Layout in the Tools menu but it doesn't seem to be working like it should. In Log and Capture when I use the mouse to press the Fast Forward button, FCP stops the miniDV deck and fast forwards the tape as fast as possible without showing any picture. However, when I invoke the keyboard shortcut I created all I get is the picture moving a few fames per second instead of the tape stopping and fast forwarding as fast as possible. The same happens with the Rewind keyboard shortcut as well. Any ideas as to why, and how I might be able to fix this?
The computer I'm currently working on is a Dual 2 GHz PowerMac G5, 2.5 GB RAM, Final Cut Studio (Final Cut Pro 5.0.4).
    –Michael
Message was edited by: Michael Starks

When I press the fast forward or rewind button while logging a miniDV tape the video stops and then the tape fast forwards or rewinds at a MUCH faster rate than L or J ever give me. That is the behavior I am trying to get from a keyboard shortcut.
Not possible via keyboard shortcuts, unfortunately.
Even if you map the Rewind and Fast Forward functions to keys in a Custom Keyboard Layout - for those who didn't know, yes, there are specific commands for those functions even though they are not mapped by default - those shortcuts will not within the L&C window. We're stuck pressing the buttons.
Forgot to mention: the only time you're able to invoke the true fast forward or rewind function is using Shift-I/O (that is, Go to In Point or Out Point). Of course that only works if you have the necessary In/Out point set...

  • A very comfortable and useful keyboard shortcut is missing since shortly

This is kind of a slight complaint about Apple having discarded a very useful shortcut for windows navigation: ctrl + > (forward to the next window of the active application) and ctrl + < (backward).
Admittedly, these shortcuts were not officially documented, instead ctrl + tilde (or: accent) was and is indicated for obtaining the same effect. But I think most people will consent that these are impractical (or, with less composure, very bothersome to use compared to ctrl + >, which was easily to press with o n e hand ;-)) ).
So, please, dear Apple after sales service, listen to the customer, and resuscitate those shortcuts (or bring up something else of even usefulness. Ctrl + F4 is definitely not the right answer, since you leave the active application here. There must be a reasonable way to go through all windows of a given application, for the sake of GUI usability) ! Thank you.

You are talking to other users, not Apple. Go to http://www.apple.com/feedback to talk to Apple. BTW, did you know you can change most keyboard shortcuts yourself using software provided with every Mac? Look under the keyboard control panel of System Preferences.
