Insignia controversy, is it over?

After buying a new Insignia smart TV a couple of weeks ago I am now finding all sorts of bad reports on them as I search the net for answers about this type of TV. So what is the current status? I'm sure you can get faulty equipment in any brand yet so far the tv I have has been a wonderful device as my first hd tv. One review claimed that Insignia could become one of the best bargains ever. That review was ove a year old. Has that time come?
I'm also reading that I can only expect 5 years use out of a modern tv before it self destructs. Is that true? I have a CRT that is 30 tears old and working fine.
So far so good. What is your experience so far with a new Insignia?

As I often do with this bunch, I completely disagree. (sorry guys!) If you check Insignia parts, one by one, you'll eventually discover who originally made them. High end brand names are always at the forefront of this list, with a great reliability record. Since Insignias come with a standard 2 year manufactuer warrenty (most, if not all models), that puts a lots of guesswork out of the quality for most people.
if you do have a problem, you can contact Best Buy to have most parts sent out to you during the two year warrenty, for free. (assuming it's a defect). You can call it after the warrenty as well.
With any line of TV's, there are occasional.. glitches, but I wouldn't say any more then any other manufacturer. In fact, from my personal experiance, it's even less.
The parts department's number for Insignia parts and other parts is 866-933-5552. There, you have it - just in case you have a problem. I hope you never have to use it, of course!
That leaves out the issue of assembly - same components but with poorer solder jobs results in less durability.
So two TVs can come out of the same Chinese factory and have the exact same design, but one brand might be less reliable than another because the contract with the factory stated fewer quality control measures.
But in general, product durability is down across the board thanks to RoHS.  The best things you can do for a TV's life are:
1)  A good surge protector
2)  Good ventilation - heat leads to thermal expansion stress, which leads to broken solder joints
It used to be the most common failure point for a TV was the CCFL backlight.  Nowadays it seems like it's usually the power supply - the point in the TV with the highest thermal stress and the most abuse coming from the outside power lines.

  • Need to record tonight-Please Help!

I use to record with audition 1.5 and am now trying and testing out the 3.0 version.
My lyrics are typed in Word and what I usually do is hit record then minimize Audition 1.5 and load up word and start doing my vocals.
Well in 3.0 when I try to open up word after hitting record, the recording just stops, it wont let me record with another window open.
Please help how do I record with another window open?
Also is the Graphic Equalizer effect called 'Destination:Car Stereo" not in 3.0? I dont see it anywhere.
    Thank you very much!!!

    >Well this option was not in CEP2.1 . Honestly what is the value and use to check 'Release ASIO Driver in Background'??
That's because there was NO ASIO in CEP2.1 as it used MME and WDM - completely different engines for processing sound information. ASIO is much stricter on the requirements of the system, but the positive side of the trade-off is that it can achieve, in general, much lower latenceies and greater stability.
You could loosely compare ASIO to the NT kernel vs WDM or MME as the Win98 kernel. Remember how much controversy there was over that when XP came out?

  • Brand New Insignia 37" 1080p

Last night I set up my brand new Insignia and had it up and running...I sensed alot of heat coming from the tv but didn't think it was a big problem. So I went out of the room for maybe about 20 minutes and when I came back the tv was off. The small red indicator light that lets you know that there is power feeding to the tv was not visible. I tried unplugging everything and putting it back in and still nothing. I even left it unplugged over night and tried again this morning but still nothing. Yet I noticed that when I pulled the plug out of the back of the television the small red light appeared and shut off again. This also happened when I plugged it back in> I believe that the tv has shorted> Would best buy come out to fix the problem or will I get it replaced.?????
    WHAT DO I DO?
p.s. I did use the monster surge protector before plugging anything into its power...so i don't think it was an unprotected surge related incident.

If you had this TV delivered just go into BB and get a replacement delivered.  If you carried it home you'll have to take it back and exchange it. In any case, get it exchanged.

  • INSIGNIA 50" 1080p plasma picture problems

I purchased a INSIGNIA 50" 1080p plasma HDTV (NS-PDP50HD-09) last year, and it's plagued with this picture problem.  What happens is the picture will split in half down the vertical middle, and the left half will bounce up and down one way, and the right half the opposite way.  It's starting to get worse and worse.  So i called support over a month ago (and it fell and still falls for a week under the 1 year manufacturer's warranty) and best buy sent a 3rd party company to look at it.  Unfortunately they only work during weekdays, and close at around 5, so i had to take days off to have my tv serviced.  I finally got it back, however it's been a week and the problem has resurfaced.  I just called in again, and they said they will resend the company to look at it again.  However, I am becoming frustrated with the situation, because the warranty end date is nearing, and although i was assured that there is a 90 day guaranty on it, i've paid for something is essentially broken.  When it worked properly, i was very satisfied with the TV.  Am i going to be stuck with a 75lb paper weight?  I don't believe this model is manufactured anymore.  Are there any options for me?

I've got the same exact problem with mine. It only does it when it's in one of the zoom modes. I had a tech check it out and he had fixed the problem but 3 months later the problem started up again.  Now I'm just waiting to hear back from BB on if they're going to fix it or replace it.

  • Doubt I purchase another Insignia

I purchased an Insignia television with DVD player built into the side. I am really wishing I would of bought a different brand. For starters the volume stinks! I can have it turned all the way up and still need it louder. I have never had surround sound, a home theater or anything like that nor do I want to have to purchase one. All my other TVs have been fine by themselves. This TV was bought for the bedroom because I watch more TV in there, however had to move this out to the living room after noticing the volume issue. It was because I put the TV out there that I did not notice the DVD player not working right for 4 to 6 months after purchasing. I went to use it for the first time and it was extremely hard to get the DVD in. It almost felt like there was already a DVD in there. Trying my best not to force it in there I finally got it to go in. It has since done this, plus half the time the DVD goes in it will not start playing and then will not eject because the DVD gets stuck in there. I have to gently take another DVD out and act like I am going to put that one in and kind of tap the one already in there to get it to eject.
I called Best Buy when I first realized the DVD was doing this and was told that it sounded like a manufacturing issue and that I would need to ship it to them to get it fixed instead of bringing it into the store to exchange it? I did not feel it was my place to do this when I had just purchased it a few months prior, so I just endured it. However, now when the DVD goes in it starts making this horrible sound that sounds like it is ruining the DVD in the process. The DVD will play while it is doing this, but the noise is louder than the volume of the movie and is extremely annoying.
I have now had this TV for a little over a year and thinking of just purchasing another one and eating my money I spent for this one. If it were just one issue I was having with this I would chalk it up to bad luck as an issue can happen to any brand of television, but since there were multiple issues I think it best not to buy this brand again.

    Hello cindychap76,
At Best Buy, we're very proud of our exclusive Insignia brand televisions, so I'm always particularly disheartened to hear when one has developed problems that impede your satisfaction. I'm very sorry that you've encountered these issues and for any inconvenience you've endured as a result.
Did you elect to purchase Geek Squad Protection for your TV? If so, I recommend contacting Geek Squad at 800-433-5778 for service options. I'm not sure why your local store would have offered the less-than-helpful advice that they did. Many brands of TVs can be taken in by Geek Squad for service, including Insignia TVs. This usually applies to TVs less than 40" though, so if your TV is larger, in-home service through Geek Squad should have been offered. That being said, since you've had the TV for a bit longer than the warranty period, I recommend calling Insignia directly at 877-467-4289. They may have options for you.
Please know that I'm grateful that you took the time to share your experience. Please let us know how it goes with Insignia.
    Sincerely,

  • Insignia 42 inch LCD

I have an Insignia 42 inch LCD that I bought last February and yesterday I noticed it has a thin vertical red line on the left hand side of the tv.
Has anyone ever seen this before and what is it?
How do I fix it, my warranty is of course over with now!!
    PLEASE HELP

    Hi ANGDAK28,
So sorry you're having problems so soon after the manufacturer's warranty has expired.  I am by no means an expert on this, but what I'm seeing in other online support forums regarding red vertical lines on lcds suggests that this could be caused by a number of issues, ranging from wiring to the circuit board to the actual lcd panel - at any rate, it doesn't sound like an easy fix.  You may wish to contact Insignia at 1-877-467-4289 to see if they can offer any recommendations over the phone, but they could also arrange for a tech to diagnose your television and give you a repair estimate (there would be a basic charge for the diagnostic, of course).
    Hope this helps!

  • Insignia LCD HDTV Display

I got a HDTV LCD TV for X-mas last year and just recently it has been getting this gray line along the top of the display and then the picture gets kinda distorted. I looked all over for information but unfortunately, like normal, I can not get my questions answered. This is why I NEVER use Best Buy....but my dad was not as smart as I am to not use them. So if anyone has any information that would be great.

    Hey Ktarver2,
Sorry to hear you're having problems with your Insignia TV. If you just got it for Christmas last year, I would recommend contacting our In Home Service department at 1-888-BESTBUY to set up an appointment while you are within the one-year manufacturer's warranty. After the year passes, you would be responsible for cost of all repairs so you'll want to call as soon as possible. I don't know what model your tv is, but you can also check for your product manual and information at http://www.insignia-products.com
    Hope this helps!

  • Recommendations for over the ear bluetooth headphone

Hello. Does anyone have recommendations for over the ear bluetooth headphones to be used for my Mac Pro? Thanks!

I recently got a set of Insignia NS-BTHDP I am quite happy with. They synced up no problem with the internal bluetooth and work nicely. I had an older set (Jensen WBT212) that didn't work as well but were functional that these replaced.

  • Sending Insignia TV for Manufacturer Warranty Through BestBuy?

    Hi,
I purchased a 50 inch Insignia tv from BestBuy almost a month ago and have had problems since day one with the signal shutting down from most the inputs several times per use. Due to a busy schedule I didn't notice how bad the problem was or get around to contacting BestBuy untill apparently it was too late to return it.
Anyways, I learned that Insignia offered a manufacturer warranty and was told by a BestBuy employee over the phone to bring the tv into the store and they would send it in for me. Am wondering if this is really the case or if they're going to try to charge me for doing so when I bring it in there?
    Thanks for any help!

    Hello Josiah,
Thanks for reaching out to us, and I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with your TV.  Although your TV is outside of the return/exchange period it should still be covered under the manufacturer's warranty.  However, with the size of your TV, we'll typically send someone out to your home rather than having you bring it into a store.  If you call 1-800-GEEK-SQUAD (1-800-433-5778) we should be able to set an appointment to have a repair tech come out to your home.

  • Insignia + Best Buy = Frustrating

So... I'm deciding it's time to upgrade from my 3-year-old Phillips 42in 1080i plasma I bought at C-ircuit C-ity three years ago. TV has been a true champ! After lots of looking around and comparison shopping, Best Buy has looked like the ideal place due to prices, selection, etc.
I decide on the Insignia 46in 120MHz LCD. I figure it's a simple checkout, but take the offer up on 0% financing and go through the process. This is where the frustration begins... this TV was an open-box return, so needed to be run through a special open-box system that doesn't work right. After 1.5 hours of creating new open box tags, running through computers, trying to get things working to no success, I end up having to leave and am told it'll be held for me. I'm late for a meeting at work (was over my lunch break), and I walked out with no TV.
I return the next day after work. No one can find my TV that was being held. Eventually it turns up after about 45 minutes of running through different people. I try and purchase it, but someone messed up my credit app and had incorrect info. I wait in line at customer service and have to go through more time having it all corrected and billed.
Finally, I get to bring my new TV home. I open it up, but the remote that was with it is no longer there. There was no note that is was missing, and I was told at the time there was a remote with it. My Comcast remotes don't have a code for it, so I'm kinda stuck at the moment, and probably have to go purchase a remote and hope it has comparable functionality. I get it set up, and am expecting all of the rave quality of set that I was sold on ("this house brand is all LG parts! it's amazing, that's why we stand by it at Best Buy! Stay away from Vizio, that's a frankenstein, yada yada yada" rambles sales people I've talked to at BB).
The set itself isn't the most wonderful. Grainy picture even with 1080p PS3 inputs, insane ghosting on 1080i input, etc and different than I was led to understand at the store. But here's the worst part: it shuts itself off randomly. After doing research online, this is a common defect with many models of Insignia LCDs. I can't believe that Best Buy can sell something that has such a potential issue to erupt at any time. I'm glad that mine started only within two days of purchase. How honest is it to sell lines of TVs with known defects and not at least warn customers or acknowledge the issue?
I call support, now I have to take additional time out of my day to either have techs come out and replace parts in the TV that have the same potential issue since it's a design flaw, or haul my TV back with the risk that if anything seems to happen to it in transit, I lose my warrantee. Not only that, I have to go back and invest more time and frustration with Best Buy staff who can't seem to get anything right, and after all this will offer only a refund, another of the same defective TV, or have me pay them more money to get another brand, which had they told me I'd have these issues in the first place, I would have.
Thank you, Insignia and Best Buy! Good thing I didn't go to W-al-mart, then I wouldn't have had to deal with any sales people, dishonest sales pitches, or defective house brands, and have all this extra time in my life to enjoy said TV...

Well, combining the following factors leads me to believe a high probability. It's always subjective and anything's possible, but if any of the things are true below, then I think BB has some responsibility to own up to for the TV itself:
    1. BB is supposed to gather information about returns (sales person said it was a customer return). There's a high chance that the buyer had the same issue I think.
    2. BB should have tested for issues. Since this is a common/known defect in Insignia TVs (though not formally acknowledged by either company...), this should have been evaluated before selling to another customer. Truthfully, there should be a recall and a formal solution for this issue since it's a common defect in the design and not just a quality-control issue (ala a cracked screen, bad solder connection).
And really, the reason I went with TV is because I was told this was the most amazing TV on earth, was a rebranded LG with the same level of quality, and a nice TV through-and-through with no real differences to the others outside of specs. I'm okay with someone selling me something, as long as it's honest. in the retail industry, a company is responsible for it's representations, services, and products, not me.
Bottom line, had I just went in, picked it myself, quick five-minute credit-app and point-of-sale, and found out I made a bad choice, then shame on me. BB gets involved, gives me a lousy consumer experience, misrepresents a product, and sends me home with a defective TV not up to the representation they gave, then shame on them. And I understand not everyone will see it my way from a personal opinion and standpoint, but I believe I have some valid points.

  • Insignia Blu ray and Netflix streaming

I have an Insignia NSWBRBDVD2 wi-fi player.  Most ot the time when I am streaming Netflix it works fine but if it has to rebuffer, it gets stuck and the only way I can get out of it is to turn the unit off and start all over.  I am going to try and plug an ethernet cable into it to see if it makes a difference.  Has anybody had this problem?

What type of internet connection are you using such as dsl cable? If you know your internet speed such as ??mb/s that would help as well. Sometimes if the connection is already a little low to be streaming netflix, and then you go wireless, buffering can be an issue where it will continually try to rebuffer until it won't even play. If it is freezing though and won't do anything at all it could be an issue with the actual players software. Regardless of the rest of my questions yes using ethernet is better and will normally make a difference. While you are at it, update the players firmware in case you haven't already as it has a fairly new update that does apply to netflix to update it to the newest version: http://insigniaproducts.com/products/dvd-players-recorders/NS-WBRDVD2.html

I really wasn't all that surprised when no one responded to this..
I found a great deal on one at a close-out price because it was designed for the I-pad I. And i liked the concept of turning my tablet into a laptop...
The keyboard came in and I am using it right now. There are some drawbacks in using it but for around $10.00, I can't complain too bad.
First of all the SHIFT key does not work. The CAPS key works but it will not work in making like a ? or a ". Or a capital letter. After playing with the keyboard, I figured out that there is a "select right" key on the top row of the keyboard and pressing and holding that in works like the SHIFT key.
Also, the arrow keys are swapped. The left and right go up and down and vice versa and the same goes the other way.
And there is no backspace key. There is a delete key that works like the delete key on a standard Windows keyboard.
Surprisingly, the volume buttons work . LOL.
I like the keyboard because I can fold it and carry it by its handle and it can turn my K1 into more of a netbook. The keys are pretty responsive, as well.
Now just how much of a pain to keep reaching up to the first row of keys for the SHIFT key is remains to be seen.

  • Insignia 50 inch plasma question

Just bought a Insignia® 50" Class / 1080p / 600Hz / Plasma HDTV last saturday at your best buy located in Tulsa, OK . Picture and everything is amazing but I noticed if I leave it on the netflix screen for more then 10-20 minutes without moving or watch sportscenter or play xbox I get a partial burn in on the screen. It goes away after a little bit, but I was wondering if this was common with these plasma's if so I may want to return it and pay a bit more for a samsung or sony that is less likely to have this issue. If this is no concern and just normal please let me know as this is the first plasma I've owned over 32 inches. thanks in advance
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I know how you feel when you think the TV might not be "perfect".  I have the Samsung 42" 450 series (720p) which is one of their low end plasmas.  I've never left an image frozen on the screen for that period of time that you mentioned.  Dark tickers on ESPN, yes, for hours and no issue.  I can't speak for Insignia plasma TVs, but I understand that this type of image retention is relatively common particularly when the TV is new.  I hear about break in periods to be more careful for a few weeks or so, but I don't know if it's true.  Yeah, I would wait and see how it goes within your 30 days too.  May not hurt to contact Insignia directly to see if they think it's normal too just to gain a little peace of mind.  Although I haven't had this issue, that doesn't mean it couldn't happen on the Samsung or other plasmas as mentioned above about the Pannys.  Best of luck.

  • INSIGNIA NS-LCD26A

I have a Insignia NS-LCD26A.  It is a little over a year old.  Last night while watching it stopped working.  The green power light comes on the screen flashes for just a second like it is going to turn on then it shuts off.  It then starts the process all over again.  The green light comes on, the screen flashes for just a second then shuts off.  The only way to stop it is to unplug it.
Any idea what is wrong with it?
    Thanks

Im not sure what the fix is, but I have the same TV, for about the same amount of time, and WALA...same exact problem. Turns on, green light lit, then the screen flashes for a second and the TV shuts off and then cycles again and again in the same manner until you unplug it. Using the manual button does no good and the remote is useless.
    Wonderful TV Insignia...
    Never again...

Stores do nothing to "tweak" channels in the store. TVs have many dozens of settings that can be changed by a user at home, and sometiems have presets to switch between certain values that the manufacturer has deemed "optimal" for certain viewing situations. If none of the preset settings offer the picture you desire, you will either need to learn how to change the settings to fit your viewing situation, or pay for a professional calibration.
It took me almost 6 months before I got my TV settings the way that I wanted them to be, using the calibration settings on various Disney DVDs, Star Wars DVDs, and special calibration DVDs, and constantly having a critical eye for everything I watched. After all of that time and effort, my TVs are about as close to profesionally calibrated as I can get them.
Have you had Time Warner out to the house to verify that it's not actually a cable problem? Just because they put "bigger cables" in the ground doesn't mean that the signal to your home is any better. Most cable and satellite companies compress their signal quite a bit on HD, and the quality suffers as a result.
