Install Disk Trouble

Ok, so yesterday I was wiping my computer (too much crap) and I deleted everything on Macintosh HD. I had tried installing Mac OS X with the CD I have, but it turns out that the CD was the installer for OS X 10.5.5, when my computer shipped with 10.5.8. Should such a small difference matter? And my computer is now blank, if I put the installer disk in, I just get a choose language screen, then 'Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer.' Any suggestions?

Should such a small difference matter?
Yes. You need to use the computer's original disks or a retail package which is newer than the computer.

  • Trouble with install disks - is it OK to make a copy of them?

Finally, I am trying to make a copy of the install disks that came with my MBP. This was recommended in several threads for preserving the original and having backups just in case.
I used Disk Utility to make a disk image - choosing DVD/CD master, no encryption - as I was instructed on another thread. I made the disk images fine of the 2 disks - they are now saved as disk images in the .cdr format. While I was at it, I made a disk image of the TechTool Deluxe CD that came with my AppleCare.
When I inserted a CD (and then I tried a DVD) into the slot to Burn the disk image of the first (and then the second) install disk, I got the message that there is not enough room on the disk I am trying to use (for either disk). I had no trouble burning a disk of the TechTool Deluxe - I did that on a CD.
When I go to Get Info for the disk image for the 2 install disks, it looks like each is no larger than 5 plus GB, which seems strange.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Mrs H

When you make images of the discs, it is compressed. So when you get info of the image, that is smaller than the actual disc size. You said disc two was 3.97gb but really uncompressed it is likely over 6GB. For both install discs one and two, you need dual-layer DVDs to burn.
    Thanks for your help, mdpeterman.
I wondered about the compressed issue - but since I chose CD/DVD master, (from Disk Utility Help: "If you want to use the disk image with a third-party application, choose CD/DVD master. The disk image contains a copy of all sectors of the disk, whether they're used or not, and copies them to other CDs or DVDs bit for bit") with no encryption I assumed that the size of the disk image was identical to the original.
What you say tells me I'm wrong - that even with DVD master bit for bit, the image is compressed. Right?
I'll get back to you when I have solved this...

I am having trouble trying to boot from my lion osx install disk on a 2007 macbook.  The disk ejects when I start up with the option key depressed.  Anyone have any ideas?
    Thank you.

How did you get a Lion OSX install disc? They don't exist. Do you mean the gray disks that came with your 2007 MacBook?
If you mean the gray disks, try starting up with the "c" key held down.
What version of OSX is on your MacBook now? Have you tried booting from the Recovery partition?

  • I was upset that I was having trouble with the mail on the Mac Book Pro.  I threw away the app for this.  Is there any place to get it back the computer.   I have looked for my install disks to no avail.  Is there anywhere I can download it back to my com

I threw the program away.  I need to have it on my computer.  Is there anywhere I can find the download for mail for mac.   I have looked for the install disks to no avail..  Can anyone help me?

There is nowhere that you can download it from.  You need your Mac OS X install disk.  If you can't find it, you'll need to replace it.  Then you can install Mail from that disk.

  • Having trouble installing software AND restarting from OSX Install disks

This may be a previously answered problem, but I couldn't find it in the forum.
My recently-purchased MacBook has iPhoto v. 2.x on it, but this is really old -- the current version is 6 or so.
I thought a newer version might be on my Install disks, but I can't seem to get past the screen that tells me to restart in order to install System X. When I do click it, it restarts back to my login screen, and then I need to relaunch the OSX installer, and the loop starts over.
The obvious solution is to restart from the Install disk, however, I cannot start up from that disk; I hold down C while restarting, but I get a flashing folder-with-a-question-mark in it. Note the grey install disk is 10.2.4 and my computer is running 10.4.11 with upgrades. Is this the issue?
Besides hoping one of you can help me 1) start from my Install disk and 2) find and install iPhoto, perhaps someone knows which version of iPhoto I will have, if any, on this disk (CD vers 1.0, 2Z691-4306-A).
    Vielen Dank!
    -A-

Your question was answered unless we didn't understand it correctly. You are trying to boot an Intel Mac with "Note the grey install disk is 10.2.4." 10.2.4 cannot boot any Intel Mac. BDAqua addressed that in his reply. You have not responded to either his or my original reply.
You're original question was about iPhoto. I replied that you can reinstall all originally pre-bundled software for your computer by running the Install Pre-Bundled Software installer contained on your OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer. There's no need to boot from the installer disc in order to reinstall pre-bundled software.
So, is there a part of your question that still needs addressing? Please let us know, and we will be glad to help if we can.

  • Trouble installing disk locked

    Hi all,
I downloaded and attempted to install Mountain Lion. Unfortunately, it failed. The error says my disk is locked. I looked at my partitions, and I do not have any. I really need to use my machine, and feel pretty frustrated at this point. Can somebody help? Thanks!

Do a backup with Carbon Copy Cleaner in an external disk and open this to burn the installer in a DVD or USB > http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/07/how-to-create-a-bootable-backup-mountain-li on-install-disk/
Press Option key and boot from the USB. Open Disk Utility, select the volume and erase it. Then, install Mountain Lion

  • I have a mac pro 2007 model. It appears I have a corrupted sector on my the hadrive tha has my operating system. If I use the install disk that came with is (Tiger) can I still get my lion back.

I have mac pro 2007 model given to me, I updated it to lion about six months ago, and I do not have a time machine.
Lion stopped loading before I get to the login screen,
I tried all the tips, doing a option/shift/v. I noticed several fsk_dsk errors that it could not fix on my boot drive.
Restore would not work either. The only physical copy I have is the install disk that came with the mac. I think it is Tiger.
If I put this operating system on will I be abel to upgrade it to lion, and if so will I have to pay again?

The Lion Recovery Partition has its own index. Your Macintosh HD partition is the one with the troubles.
If Disk Utility cannot fix it, you may need to apply different Utilities, such as Disk Warrior.
Some readers suggest that the best disk repair is to erase the drive and restore it from your Backups.
This might be a good time to consider getting a new drive to have on hand. This would allow you flexibility in copying, fixing, and (if needed) replacing the drive with the problems.

  • Possible to copy final cut studio install disks?

    hi everyone,
i loaned my fcs 5.1.1 disks to a friend and they came back scratched. i have to reinstall the program and i'm having trouble.
wondering if it's possible to duplicate the install disks or are they protected some how?
    thanks for your response---

    The Show,
I like you. There is nothing wrong with telling people what the rules are as you constantly do, and I KNOW we both agree about the dongle. Here's where our opinions differ:
    you wrote-
"C'mon Zeb if there's only one person who buys the program and they end up loaning it out to all his buddies then Apple is gonna end up having to sell the program for a million freakin' dollars! And you want to CONTRIBUTE to that?!?!"
my response: apple is not stupid. they know very well that piracy occurs with their software. Did you ever think that maybe they make it easy for people to copy software onto multiple machines on PURPOSE? Hear me out for a minute.
There's a software company out of Boston called Mark Of The Unicorn a.k.a. MOTU. They are big players in the audio world- major competitors of digidesign. A friend of mine used to work for them and he told me about an interesting discussion that the company was contemplating- what to do about piracy. Instead of taking the police state route (dongles everywhere and expensive software), they decided to sell their major audio recording program, digital performer for a VERY low price and do nothing about piracy.
Why you might ask... here's why. Once users have the software, they would get used to the workflow, then, realizing that they want to upgrade some of their gear, they would purchase MOTU hardware for lots of money AND pay lots of money for music libraries and plugins that REQUIRE A DONGLE!
It's actually a quite brilliant strategy. It got me hooked. I no longer use protools for audio. I'm strictly digital performer AND I have MOTU hardware!
Now think for a second, that maybe just MAYBE apple is using a similar technique- Have inexpensive software that is readily available to the masses, then get them hooked, PC users will want to use FCP, and will have to buy hardware- a mac...
Not only that, but apple makes only a small fraction of their money from people like us. the big bucks for them are the ipods, macminis and imacs.
I guess my conclusion with this 2 A.M. rant is apple is smart. If they really cared about piracy, they would force users to activate their software everytime they are on the system with a key (dongle) just like avid does.
My personal feelings on the issue are torn. On one hand, I paid good money for my software and it's frustrating to hear about people that get cracked versions, etc... but at the same time, think about all the people who can't spend x amount of dollars on a high end system like an avid... well, that's why this high(er) end system FCP is so great. If some high school kid out there has a pirated copy and he is LEARNING, trying to better his mind, not watch TV all day, but instead CREATE! I think that's just fine. I have learned so much from this forum and FCP has really taught me a lot about dealing with lots of different problems in LIFE! Life is all about troubleshooting. Maybe some poor kid out there is the next Shane Ross, or Patrick Sheffield or Captain Mench or Studio X or David H... the list goes on.
Maybe someday apple will clamp down and force us all to carry dongles, or maybe someday FCP will be free.
Until that day, I truly feel as though your calls for alert are merely falling on dead ears and scaring away new members to the forum.
Hold on one sec... there's a knock at my door- it's the FCP police. Gotta go!

  • Install disk 1 + wireless mighty mouse

when i re-boot using install disk 1 the process comes to a stop when it comes to the graphic showing how to put the batteries in and switch on the mighty mouse, there is just the spinning disk at the bottom of the screen.after alot of trial and error i discovered that plugging in a usb mouse makes the process carry on as normal.also i discovered that clicking repeatedly the mouse button
sometimes makes it carry on but not always.I usually have to revert to plugging in a usb mouse.I have tried the hardware test with "no trouble found" also the extended test is ok.The mouse works normally otherwise except maybe the tracking speed could be faster.I have it at max and i could do with another notch or two but thats another story. Also the range seems ok.it works normally up to 25 ft.Do you guys have the same behaviour as i do?
    macpro 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

did not solve the problem with the install disk. But if you are referring to the speed of the mighty mouse i tried "steermouse" and that solves the speed issue. Lets hope apple solves this one in the next update

  • Pismo G3 Tiger Install Disk won't boot

Hey, I just got a G3 Pismo off eBay and I am having trouble reinstalling Tiger onto it. It's a 500 Mhz G3 and it's been upgraded to 1 gig of Ram and a 100 gig hard drive. It's currently running 10.4.11, so I know it can handle it. Whenever I try installing it just hangs on a white screen after start up. I've tried from both the internal DVD drive and an external DVD drive. One thing I have noticed is that the install disk won't show up as an option in the Startup Disk panel when it's in the external drive, even though it will mount normally.
I've tried booting as the startup disk from it's current install and from Os 9.2.2 but no luck. I've reset the PRAM/NVRAM and reset the PMU and still nothing.
    Any ideas?

Are you using a retail Tiger install DVD (black with silver X)? A gray, model specific installer for a different model Mac won't work.
I suspect your external DVD drive is connected via USB, which can't be used for a boot drive. You need an external Firewire drive if you want to boot from a DVD/CD.
What's wrong with the 10.4.11 OS currently installed? We might can recommend some fixes if there are problems.

  • Backup orig FCStudio install disks before sending for crossgrade

I am currently running FCP5.0 and decided to do the crossgrade with Apple (mainly because I just purchased Shake 4.1 and found out from a posting on the list AFTER I purchased it that Shake 4.1 won't run with 5.0.4)
Taking the suggestion of other posters to backup the original DVD's before sending them in, I did so. Two of the install disks (Motion and DVDSP) were approx 7 GB each. Since my G5DP2.5 only burns DVD +/-R, I purchased a LaCie DVD+/-R Dual Layer burner and burned those disks to DVD-R Dual Layer Verbatim Disks.
They show up on my machine if they are in the LaCie DL burner. They are spit out if put directly in my G5DP2.5 machine.
I have 3 newer Mac machines that the system profiler says burns DVD+R DL . So I burn them as DVD+R Dual Layer and those show up fine in those 3 newer machines, but not in my G5DP2.5 None of the machines will accept the DVD-R DL disks.
    My questions:
    1. Why do the original install DVD's work in my G5DP2.5 as I assume they are some sort of Dual Layer DVD because those two disks are approx 7 GB each?
    2. Does everyone else have Dual Layer +/- R capability in their machines and have no trouble copying their disks as backup?
    3. Ever the optimist, if for some reason I want to go back to 5.0 (5.0.4 is where it should be, I know) and do a clean install on the G5DP2.5, I'm guessing it will work to just attach the LaCie Dual Layer burner so my machine can read the disks?
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.
    Sharon
(PS--When they all come in I will upgrade to 10.4.7 and QT 7.1.2) But hey, it has all been working mostly just fine for me...)

4 of the FC Studio 5 application installer Disks are dual layer.
DVD SP 4, Apple Loops for Soundtrack Pro, LiveType Media 1, and Motion.
    <
Umm, none of my cross-grade disks are dual-layer DVDs but that certainly does NOT mean that yours are not. That they are shipping this way is news to me. Learn something new every day around here if you're paying attention
Get Info will reveal the capacity of optical media, not necessarily the actual contents. You just need to be careful what figure you're looking at. And, the contents of installer DVDs are highly compressed archives. A 6G installer file might unstuff to much more than 10G.
Not all disk images can be used to run a complete installation, some require the physical disk for obvious copy protection that still includes serial numbers. I have no idea if Apple's are set up this way. The only way to find out is to create the images on your drive and try it.

  • Can't boot with install disk

I ran out of disk space on the Mac HD and I only have 452 MB left. Before, I had 12 GB. I think trying to connect a router swallowed up the GB.
Anyway, because I ran out of disk space, I had trouble starting the Mac HD.
I can open Bootcamp (XP Professional) and have no problem there.
I attached the dvd drive to the MacBook Air and put the Snow Leopard Install disc inside and tried
    1) Option start
    2) Pressing C key start
    3) Option command shift delete start but none of them work.
I cannot get it to boot with the Snow Leopard install disc.
    What can I do?
I was planning to do a clean install but can't boot with the Snow Leopard install disc.
Can I do it from Bootcamp?

I booted with the Snow Leopard Install disk and checked Disk Utility and found that the HD disk was corrupted. This time it showed only 77MB free space even though I freed up 2 GB using 'rm' commands in single-user mode.
The problem was some kind of virus or something that not only ate up free space but corrupted the system.
I had to do a clean install (erasing the Mac HD volume and formatting it) to get the Mac HD operational again.

  • Can't boot off the Install Disk, loud fan noises, "No" symbol

I recently attempted to verify my internal hard drive status with Disk Utility, and got the following response back:
"Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair"
I tried to boot off the Tiger Install Disk in the hopes of repairing my internal hard drive, but after a minute of the Apple logo and spinny icon at startup, the logo is replaced with a gray "no" symbol. I then had to turn off and on the iMac while holding down Option to reselect my internal hard drive as the startup disk. While this is happening, my iMac's fan is going crazy. It calms down once I get the original startup disk selected.
I have already tried resetting the SMU and PRAM, with no luck. I am also booting off of my roommate's Tiger OS X Install Disk, not my own (I am a college student, and I believe I left my copy of Tiger at home). So far, I am having no trouble using my iMac, as long as it is running off the internal hard drive, but I don't like the ominous "Volume needs repair" message Disk Utility gave me. Any suggestions?
Here's the complete log from Disk Utility the last time I tried to verify my startup disk:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.

If you can boot from an external drive, use Disk Utility from the external disk to repair your computer, you can't do it from the same drive you have booted from. Perhaps the friend who lent you the Tiger disk will let you use his computer and connect to yours in Target Disk Mode.
Let me know how you make out,

  • MIA Install Disk...?

Yeah, so I've been having issues with my MacBook randomly crashing. I think it's a software problem. I've been trying to troubleshoot it for a while, but I can't seem to fix it. I'd like to try restoring the system, but the laptop was a graduation gift from my parents and somehow during the gifting the install CD(s?) went MIA and no one has been able to find them. Anyone know of a way to try and fix this without the CD or a way to get a new CD...? I really don't want to have to buy a new one as I am a poor college student. Any help/ideas are greatly appreciated.

    Hi picturemeperfect,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
You are in trouble now. You cannot even buy new install disks because there are no retail install disks for Intel-Macs because all of them ship with 10.4 and the accompanying install DVDs, so no retail version is necessary.
I wonder how you can lose install DVDs that are packed within a closed carton with the computer... You might want to call AppleCare or the AppleStore and ask for assistance. Sometimes the can help, but not always because there were too many users who sold their restore disks on eBay and started whining as soon as they needed them for a reinstall.

  • Corrupted Mac OS X Install disk?

I have an early 2010 MacBook which came with Snow Leopard. I had trouble with the permissions for quite awhile; every time I did a software update I would have trouble booting up and would get stuck on the start up screen. Disk Utility and fsck sometimes helped. Last week I could not get anything to work and could not boot it up at all so I took it to the Geniuses at my Mac Store and they said the HD was fine, but obv the software had issues so they did a free Archive & Install. Everything was fine after that.
Then I bought a new HD to use as a back up, and after I got home I realized it was bigger and faster than the one already in my MacBook so I decided to switch them out. Then I installed Snow Leopard from my Mac OS X Install disk onto the new HD. Now I have software issues and permissions issues again. When I do Disk Utility and try to repair permissions it just keeps saying the same permissions are corrupted over and over, and tells me that some of them will not be repaired.
Does this mean that my Mac OSX Install disk is corrupted? How would I go about getting a new one so I can start over clean again without problems? If I take my MacBook back to the Geniuses, I don't know if they will do an A&I for free again, and also, if I ever need the OS X Install disk for future, I'd like to have one that's not faulty.
    Any thoughts? Thanks!

Thanks Lumnos, I appreciate your thoughts and your time in responding.
I decided to reformat and erase the hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard just to see what would happen. So I started up the computer to Disk Utility using the OS X Install DVD. I clicked on the name of the HD and then clicked "erase". When that was done I went back to the Snow Leopard Installation screen and went through that process. This is all on the HD that I just bought 2 days ago, BTW.
I know you said the iTunes thing is probably unrelated to any permissions problem, but I wanted to see what it looked like after wiping the HD. So after the OS was installed, the first thing I did after start up was open iTunes. It still does not display the Store or recognize my devices.
Then I rebooted into Disk Utility like you suggested. I verified the disk. It said "Macintosh HD appears to be OK" without any messages about having modified anything.
Then I verified permissions. All it said was something like "Verification of permissions is complete" and didn't give any other report, no error messages, nothing, except that it was complete.
Then I tried repairing permissions, and it did the same thing. Said it was complete without any other messages.
So I guess the permissions and the disk are fine?
Any thoughts on what to do about iTunes? I don't think updating the iTunes software will change anything, as all my software was updated prior to posting this discussion, and I was having the same problem.
