Install DVD onto MacBook Pro 13" with NO DVD Drive

My son has a MacBook Pro 13" with no DVD drive.. He received iLife ON DVD.. What is the simplest way to get the contents of that dvd installed onto his macbook?
Is there a way to download the ilife and just type in a serial # etc. from the DVD?

You cannot download iLife from the Internet for free.
Instead, you have two options to install iLife:
1. Get an external DVD drive and use it to install iLife, or;
2. If you have got another PC or Mac, use Remote Disc > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Note that your son's MacBook Pro already comes with iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand, which are iLife apps. However, he needs the DVD to install iDVD and iWeb, in case he needs them

Currently, only the 13" "classic" style comes with one. For a Retina model you need to buy an external Superdrive.

  • Error message when trying to install Mavericks onto macbook pro.

Hi Been trying to install Mavericks onto my macbook pro (10.6.8) but the install fails after 3-5 minutes and I get this error message: *** WARNING: -[NSImage compositeToPoint:fromRect:operation:] is deprecated in MacOSX 10.8 and later. Please use -[NSImage drawAtPoint:fromRect:operation:fraction:] instead.
I have tried to repair the drive through the utility function but I am told it cannot be repaired. I tried the recovery function as well but whilst I am able to select the source (external hard drive with recent time machine backup) the next screen prompts me to select the disk to restore but all it does is search for a drive and there is none there to select.
Really not sure what else to do. Please help!

Well some progress has been made so thought i would post what I did, in case someone experiences the same issue I did and maybe this will be of use to someone else...
Ended up force-shutting my macbook down then switching back on, as soon as the chime could be heard i pressed command R and kept both keys pressed until Recovery mode kicked in.
Internet Recovery came on which took approx 20 minutes (more about this here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718 )
    Then 4 options appeared
    1) recover with time machine back up
    2) set up and install Mac OSX (with the Lion icon and reference to Lion for some reason, I had Snow Leopard to begin with)
    3) get help online
    4) repair or erase disk using disk utility
I decided to attempt to repair the drive but use the verification tool first which said the drive was fine??????!!!
Then clicked on repair disk, this took only a few minutes then it stopped after a couple lines.
While it was "repairing" the button changed to "stop repair" then changed back to "repair" so I took that to mean it had done what had to be done.
Then closed the utility screen whch prompted me to restart macbook after selected a drive to boot up from (only one option came up for me)
Did that and I was back into familiar territory and on my mac as I knew it ie snow leopard.
I did restart macbook just to make sure and it just booted up as normal, to snow leopard with the maverick install icon still showing in the dock.
Panic over. Not sure if / when I will give installing Maverick another try though....

  • Ripping Home DVD onto Macbook Pro

I have about 6 different 15 minute videos on 2 to 3 DVDs that we recorded and I want to put them onto my macbook pro to then be able to use them in iDVD to make copies for some friends. How do I put the DVD onto my computer? I have tried a couple different downloads websites have told me but I cannot figure it out. So pretty much how do I rip a home recorded DVD onto my computer?

  • Macbook pro retina with external dvd or reg. macbook pro

I just received my new macbook pro retina display.  discovered did not have dvd drive.  stupidly did not figure that out prior.  Should I exchange it for a macbook pro with drive or is the external dvd drive as good?

OIt's true that the Retina model needs adapters for Ethernet and FireWire 800 connections - so there might be a mess of 'accesories' to haul around and keep track of. Personally, that's just one of the many reasons that I didn't leap at a 1st generation Retina model. You can always put an SSD into a standard, non-Retina, MBP. You can also add up to 16GB of RAM, just as on a Retina model. And it's much cheaper to DIY than to pay Apple prices.
Plus the optical drive is built-in.
    Good luck,

  • Why wont my macbook pro boot with external hard drives connected?

After two years of uninterrupted success running my MBP with five external hard drives attached (two USB, two eSATA with LaCie Expresscard 34, one FireWire 800), my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 installed will not boot with the drives attached. Starting up with the option key depressed does not work. Anyone have insight? This didn't happen until I upgraded to 10.8.2, so is there a bug fix needed in that update?

Update, I reset the PRAM (i think) and now the chime is back as I start up... small win but thats all it does.
So I decided to dload a copy of Lion and burn to a disc, then try and boot from there. When i boot holding option and select the dvd it sounds like something is happening, contstant turning or reading of the disk, but nothing is happening on screen, just my old friend the apple logo and his mate the spinning wheel. Starting to concede now, just hoping to get my data back, its mostly photos and some files i cant duplicate.
I am going to purchase Mountain lion on my current apple ID using a friends macbook and try and reinstall from there. Although i never had Mountain Lion installed in the first place (just lion) there isnt an option to buy lion on the app store (i dont think)  This is prob my last spin of the dice i think before handing it in, unless anyone on here has some ideas....

  • Macbook pro, trouble with external hard drives

I just got the drive on my mid-2010's macbook pro replaced at Apple. I am now experiencing a new problem.
My macbook is having trouble with ALL my external hard-drives. After a few minutes of being plugged in I click on them to open and the finder window is blank. Its not allowing me to veiw the content stored on the drive. If I keep trying my computer will freeze. I try to 'Force Eject' the drive and it doesnt eject so I have to unplug then start over.
This seems to happen roughly about 5 minutes after I plug them in. They work fine the first 5 minutes. Its becoming extremly annoying. All my drives are different makes, sizes, etc.. so I pretty sure its the macbook.
    What might the problem be?
    Thanks,
    Shane

  • Installing CS6 on macbook pro - have disks, no disk drive on computer

I just purchased a macbook pro and it doesn't have a disk drive. I need to install CS6 and have the disk and serial #, any suggestions? Can I download CS6 directly from Adobe website?

Yes, you can download the trial version and use your serial number to activate it.  Go to the Products section of the Adobe site and find whichever CS6 software you purchased and go to its web page.  On that page you should find a "Try" link to the right.

  • Does the new MacBook Pro come with a disk drive

    Hi
Does the 13" retina display MacBook pros come fitted with a disc drive ??
    Thanks

No, it does not. However, when you are customizing the MacBook Pro with Retina display on the Apple Online Store, it gives you the option to purchase an external disc drive, AKA the Apple Super Drive. If you are purchasing from an Apple Retail Store, they sell these there, too, so just ask.
I hope I answered your question.

  • Upgrade my Macbook Pro 17" with solid state drive and RAM?

My MBP is a 17" mid-2009, 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB.
I am an architecture student. I use 3D modeling programs like SketchUp, Revit, AutoCad, etc. According to these software websites, my MBP is sufficient. However, when I'm running these programs, I get the apple "beach ball" a LOT, along with a lot of lagging even when I'm working on simple models. After doing some research, it appears that upgrading my RAM to 8GB (my model's max capability) and buying a solid state drive would help my MBP run much faster and much cooler.
    My questions:
    1. What brand and exact product #/link to this (if possible) of RAM (2 x 4GB sticks) and SSD should I purchase?
    2. Which SSD GB option should I purchase? I chatted with OWC online and was given this variety of SSDs.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internal_storage/SSD/Mercury_Electra_3G_Solid_Sta te
    3. I was also given this product bundle recommendation. It's cheaper than buying everything individually, but I'm not sure if I need the tools and I don't understand the purpose/advantage of having the "OWC Express Silver Enclosure".
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/YSSDMP240/
I just want my MBP to run as fast as possible while running my modeling software w/o spending an arm and a leg if possible. But I don't know if it's worth the trouble and expense to upgrade my current MBP, which I love, or just getting a new MBP or Mac desktop. And if I should just get another Mac, I don't know which one I should get.
Another thing I have seen is the Mac Mini. Is it possible to plug this or any other external device to my MBP in order to accomplish my performance goals without having to modify my MBP or buy another Mac?
This is the first time I've posted any help questions to the Apple Support Community. I really appreciate any advise you Mac experts can give me. I called one of the Apple Stores, but I was definitely not satisfied with the inexperienced rep's answers.
    Thanks!

    1. OWC or Crucial are recommended sources for memory. You can usually find a 5% off and free shipping code for Crucial on retailmenot.com. On crucial just key in your system information in their memory selector.
    2. Your system likely supports SATA II speeds, so the SSD OWC pointed to would work. I installed one in our 2010 mac mini and it's working well. I originally installed their 6G drive however it ran at SATA I speeds. Turns out the 3G which is specd for SATA II is what was needed and works fine.
    3. The OWC package they recommended includes a case to put your existing hard drive in. That helps to be able to transfer your data back to the SSD then you can use it as a backup drive or as an external storage device.

  • If I do a clean install on my MacBook Pro will I be able to re-install apps (FCP, Aperture, MS Office etc.) from a Time Machine backup, or will I need the original install DVDs with authorization codes?

    I have two questions...
    1) If I do a clean install on my MacBook Pro will I be able to re-install apps (FCP, Aperture, MS Office etc.) from a Time Machine backup, or will I need the original install DVDs with authorization codes? (because I don't have them)
    2) Has anyone ever seen anything like this before on their computers?
The Apple Genius' were stumped by my laptop issues and said they'd never seen anything like it before and recommended I did a clean install. Below you can see my trash bin, and if you look at the "Empty" button it reads "N201" and then there's the "N39" to the left of it. You can also see these numbers over by the folder area--"SD5, SD6, SD7." But that's not all...
When I right click on items I see the numbers again. Instead of "Open with" I get "N152" and there's an "N35" and "LB1" towards the bottom.
I have no idea what's going on so I'm just going to do a clean install on my machine but I don't want to lose my apps. I don't have the original install DVDs for them anymore. If you have any suggestions please let me know. Thanks!

You don't lose them.  You can always redownload them from the app store after you log back in with your Apple ID.
    "Buy, download, and even redownload.
You can install apps on every Mac you use and even download them again. This is especially convenient when you buy a new Mac and want to load it with apps you already own."

  • MacBook Pro came with iLife 09 pre-installed. Is it on the App Disc?

My Macbook Pro came with iLife 09 installed. I did not get a separate iLife disc. I have two discs, the Mac OS X DVD and Applications Disc (haven't confirmed if iLife is in there). Do you know off Apple includes iLife in that second disc or will I be screwed out of iLife if I decide to erase and install the Mac OS X down the road?

Welcome to the Mac world!! The answers to any questions you have are right here!
Time machine will handle everything for you. You don't have to make any decisions. It will start with a full backup and then take incremental backups from there. You can hook up an external to the extreme base station but if you have 1 machine to backup I would suggest plugging it into that machine. Network backups can be so slow, especially that first full backup.
