Install external drive into mac pro

I have stored my itunes library on an external hard drive and now that i have purchased a mac pro i would like to install the external hard drive into the mac pro and continue to use the drive for the library. The external drive is a deskstar in an enclosure that i can just slide it out of so i can install it in the mac pro. Will this work or is there a better way?

Turn off the option in the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences to copy the files to the iTunes music folder, and then drag the folder into the open iTunes window. This will not preserve playlists and other metadata.

how to install hard drive into mac pro

I recently bought a new 2TB internal sata drive for my Macpro.
The installation was easy, but I'm not sure what to do next.
For one, should I partition the drive?
My purpose for buying the drive was to use it as my go to drive for Parallels. I used to run my music studio on Windows based machines, and my older project files require a windows OS to recover. I installed Parallels so I can have my studio running Mac and Windows programs which will enable me to access my old project files and take them into my newer Protools system.
So now, I've installed my new hard drive, but I'm not sure if I should partition it....And!? I'm not sure how to designate that drive for my virtual pc on Parallels. I was able to allocate enough disk space to parallels in order to load my music software, but at this point, I'm not sure if I've just promised it disk space from my original partitioned drive (which only has about 350 GB left on it).
I would love to be able to make one internal drive available for Parallels, and the other available for the rest of my OSX. When I use Parallels, I still would like to save some extra information on the 2TB drive as well from my dekstop running OSX.
I hope this makes sense! Your help is much appreciated!

  • Is it OK to use USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive?

Is it OK to use a USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive? I was told by Sweetwater tech support to use Firewire, but both the FW400 and FW800 connections crash my audio interface software mixer (Presonus' "Universal Control" software).
Both Firewire connections also create a 10 second hang for each Command-Save that I do.
USB 2.0 for the external drive seems to be working so far, but is there some reason I should be wary of using this as my go-to project drive? In other words, I am imagining that there was probably some definite reason that the tech support guy mentioned not to use it. But maybe not. It's a brand new Glyph. In any event, it's nice to have the 10 second hang eliminated, and I was just looking for some advice, since digging into the Presonus software issue could take some time.

If you have a mac pro, why not stick the external HDD inside via one of your many SATA cables & have it run 9 times faster than your USB?
Or stick a HDD CADDY in your mac pro, so you can slot in a full sized 3TB HDD for recording, and when you are done, pull it out & slip it in an external enclosure if you need to take it places?

  • Adding 2nd Optical Drive into Mac Pro (first gen) makes both unusable!

    Hey all,
I recently purchased a second DVD drive to go into my first gen Mac Pro 2.66Ghz.
The installation went a little rough, although OK in the end. The IDE cable seemed reluctant to want to stay in a safe place.
Upon booting however, and now had no optical drives installed!
Even System Profiler reported no disc burning capabilities except my external USB CD Burner.
I've taken the second Optical Drive out, which by the way was one of these: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Samsung/SHS202NBLS/
My original Sony (Disguised NEC drive) drive is now working again, although what on earth happened?
Should I try swapping the drives around? E.g the Sony on the bottom and Samsung on top?
    Any thoughts would be appreciated,
    Thanks,

    I have an idea,
Perhaps the newer DVD Drive I have here is "better" than the currently installed one, and therefore doesn't like being connected as the slave (bottom) to the "weaker" master (top) drive?
Could it be something like that?

  • External drive enclosure Mac Pro sleds

Does anyone know of an external esata enclosure that uses the same sleds as the Mac Pro (2006)? I'm starting to make regular backups of each internal drive to be stored offsite, and swapping regularly too so I'm sure the backups are good, and I'd rather not have to pull out a screwdriver everytime I swap. I guess a dock that would work with the sleds attached is also an option.

What about such a simple USB to SATA adapter like http://www.computeruniverse.net/products/90316932.asp?agent=619

  • Copying Library from external HDD into Mac Pro

I have a copy of my iTunes 9 library (from an earlier Windows PC) on a USB HDD and want to copy the content into the library of my new Mac. Which folder shall I paste it into? Is this the one that shows up under preference > Advanced > Media Library?
If I replace that content with the one in my HDD, will it work in iTunes 10?
    Thanks

I would troubleshoot or dump the LaCie in favor of something else.
LaCie have been trouble enough in the past with FW ports, power adapters, shorting of cables, running very slow when connected off PCIe SATA using USB/eSATA cases.
But you never say if this is a FW800 case, or what interface, that is so slow. Resetting FW ports is a troubleshooting trick designed just for LaCie cases. Along with swapping cables and power adapter.
I would give all your drives a shot of Alsoft Disk Warrior to insure that the directory and file system are okay. And look at the hardware test in DW output for spare blocks vanishing on the drive.
Using SATA drive, case, and controller of course should be fast and done in seconds, not minutes.

Did you purchased the Full Perpetual License from Adobe for $149.00?, if so then what has happened is that you probably downloaded the Creative Cloud trial version which has now expired.
The license key for the perpetual version will not be accepted to activate the CC version.
Uninstall the existing Lightroom and then download the one available from the link below. The uninstall process will not affect your Catalog, Preferences or personal files but will just remove the application. Install the new download and you license key will be accepted.

If this is not the situation you face then provide some more details.

My Mac crashed. I got a new hard drive. I reinstalled Lightroom. Fortunately ircats are stored on an external drive. How do I import all of the old catalogues from external drive into a new LR catalogue. I have done it before. It has just been many years and I can't recall how.

If you had stored your catalog files on an external drive, then all you have to do is double-click on them to open them and use them.
Or you could move them to the internal drive and double-click on them once the move is completed.
To create a single catalog file from multiple ones, you could use File->Import from Another Catalog

  • Problems accessing iTunes media folder on external drive via Mac

I have recently got a Mac Book Pro and assumed it would be easy to access my iTunes library - which I store on a Buffalo external drive and normally access via my Asus vivobook laptop running windows 8 - by simplying plugging the external drive into the Mac Book Pro, opening iTunes while pressing on the Option key (as I understand it is called) and then selecting the iTunes library .itl file when invited to choose a library. However, when I do this, I get a message saying that "the .tl file is locked, on a locked disc or I do not have write permission for this file".
If I click on the .itl file in the external drive via my Mac, it takes me straight into iTunes but, of course, without any of the content of my iTunes media folder.
I can access the media on the external drive when it is plugged into my Mac and am not aware of ever having introduced any restrictions on the library .itl file (I normally switch the external hard drive between my Dell desktop and my Asus laptop).
I have restarted my Mac Book Pro and quite iTunes etc. I also have the media folder correctly identified on the external hard drive in my iTunes preferences, Advanced Settings.
I would be most grateful for any ideas as to what could be the problem here.
    Thank you (in anticipation).
    Best,
    Michael

Get info on the drive.  Check the format.  If it says NTFS it is a format that Macs cannot write to, only read, unless you install special software.  It is a common issue with using Windows drives on Macs.  "Locked" may mean iTunes cannot open it for full use since it needs to write to the library file as well as read it.
Your solution may be to reformat the drive to something a Mac can use fully too, such as FAT (beware file size limits with large video files). or trying to work with a NTFS driver for Mac.

I have a BT Infinity router plugged into the Time Capsule, not sure where the radio settings are?

I don;t have the drive shared out at all at the moment, is this necessary?  How do I do this if so?

  • Confused about Install procedure on new Mac Pro

With 10.4 on my old G4 I would put the DVD in, hit install and the machine would restart. The installer could come up and I could select the disk utility and do a repair disk and disk permissions from the install disk before my actual install. With my Mac Pro, when I hit install from the disk it goes right into the installation process. I began that process thinking it would first restart the machine and give me a choice to access the disc utility first, but it looked like it was going straight to install. So I stopped the dang thing quickly. Now I've got this .DS_Store icon on my desktop that won't go away. A few questions...
    1. How do I get to Disc Utility on the boot DVD and do maintenance?
    2. How do I get rid of the dang .DS_Store icon on my desktop?
    3. I'm experiencing quirky behavior on my Mac Pro, like jitters in Mail sometimes when I just open and start to scroll through notes in my inbox, slow opening of windows, etc., and my pointer suddenly going from the center of the screen to up to the top of the screen for no apparent reason. What is the best recommended repair and maintenance third-party utility for 10.6.3 Snow Leopard, to keep my Mac running optimally? I used to use SOCKS and Tech Tool Pro for 10.4.
Thank you so much for any help you can give me.
    Leonard

    Arch,
Every time I open Mail all the mail messages jitter for about 2 seconds, and my pointer, several times during the day, will jump up from, say, the middle of the screen to the top of the screen and I have to move it down. Odd. But it doesn't seem to be affected by how long I'm on the machine, or whether I just turn it on or whatever. Completely random. Plus, sometimes other drives won't open quickly... I mean I have another SATA drive that when I click on it, it won't open for about 6 or 7 seconds. The drive IS about 2 years old, it could be the drive, but it opened quickly on my old machine. That seems odd for a supposed speed demon like the Mac Pro. So I just wanted to run the Disk Utility from the install disk to try and see if that would stop these small issues. I brought a couple of apps over from my old machine. Photoshop CS and InDesign CS. I realize they aren't running optimum, and the new versions are native. But I can't afford them right now and I had several people tell me they will work, just slower. Is it just wrong to use them at all? These people are having no problems with them like I'm having. I did not use Migration Assistant. I'm using the mouse that came with my computer, with the scroll button top forward center. Yes, my only desire was to use the install disk to repair the disk as I thought a damaged disk would not repair itself as well as the install disk would. Would just a basic install work and get rid of these ghost icons?
    Thanks again for your help,
    Leonard

  • G4DVD-RAM drive with  MAC PRO?

I have an old g4 tower laying around, only because it has a DVD-RAM drive and I have tons of old files stored on those 2000 DVD-RAM cassettes (encased in plastic). Is it possible to install this drive into my new 2009 Mac Pro 8 core in the second superdrive bay?

The 2009 Mac Pro uses SATA optical drives so you will need a ATA to SATA adapter
    <http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempo_bridge.html>
You also need to remove the lip from the tray,
