Install iTunes 10.4.1 install error - The Folder Path "File Name" contains an invalid character

Upgraded computer from XP Prof 32-Bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit (Upgrade package, performed Custom Install).
Attempt to install iTunes 10.4.1 for 64-Bit.  Receiving the following error/problem:
The Folder Path "File Name on my external drive" contains an invalid character
I click ok and then get this:
The Installer encountered errors before iTunes could be configured.  Errors occurred during installation.  Your system could not be modified,  Please run the installer again, or click Finish to exit.
Any fixes for this?

Sorry, one of us is not managing to be clear enough.
Does the message read The Folder Path "File Name on my external drive" contains an invalid character or perhaps The Folder Path "<some path name here>" contains an invalid character?
If so, then the problem might be just what it says it is with the path name in question... Either way if you list the path given in the error message in a reply to this thread it might provide a clue for anyone tying to help with the problem.
You could try downloading the installer to C:\iTunesSetup.exe in case that helps.

  • ERROR: The folder path 'All Pictures' contains an invalid character... ???

I get that error when i try to install itunes
i do use an external hard drive to store my pictures, music, etc...
in my start menu, when i click the shortcuts for pictures or music, they do not work. When i right click them and hit properties, everything is blank.
I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the problem, but it might. PLEASE HELP!

Do a Start > Search and find out whether you do have a "All Pictures" folder.
Sounds like your system got changed from having a "My Pictures" folder to naming it "All Pictures".
The Windows default names them "My Pictures", "My Music", and so on.
You can fix the shortcuts by doing the right-click, then browsing to wherever that "All Pictures" folder is.

  • Can't uninstall iTunes.  "The folder path "TVShows nib" contains an invalid character."

Every time I try to uninstall 10.2.5.11 on Windows 7, I get the Error: "the folder path "TVShows>nib" contains an invalid character."  and the uninstall fails.  Any suggestions?
    I have already tried:
    http://www.cavdar.net/2009/04/12/itunes-install-the-folder-path-c-contains-an-in valid-character/
    Thanks!

Assuming here you're uninstalling as part of troubleshooting for installing a newer version of iTunes.
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • The Folder Path "My Documents contains an Invalid Character"

    Hello.
I have a major problem at hand.
I presently have iTunes 7.6 on my Dell laptop
when i try installing itunes 7.7 or 7.7.1, it gives an error
"The folder path my documents contains an invalid character"
I scoured the internet, but to no avail...
    Please help
Sometime back, the name of My Documents have been changed to "id" by mistake
Then itunes 7.6 also wasnt working.. Then i went to the registry and changed all the folder paths, and then it was working....
    So, please help...
    Thanks!

If the same problem occurs in another account, it suggests the message is misleading and the problem is not with My Documents itself.
That is unless you have changed the path c:\Documents and Settings which is common to all accounts.
It sounds as though there is a registry key set with corrupt information somewhere that you haven't found yet.
Something you could try is a complete removal of iTunes according to the following method. I have also included instructions for installer clean up which you should do if one of the uninstalls fails. I am guessing that the iTunes uninstall might fail with a similar message.
    == uninstall with cleanup ==
Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:
    XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.
When you get to deleting Quicktime files in the system32 folder as advised in the method, you can delete and file or folder called Quicktime.
    Restart your PC.
Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)
Remove any references you find to the programs you removed - strictly speaking you only need to worry about those programs where the uninstall failed.
    restart your PC
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.
    If it does, install iTunes.

  • I am trying to update iTunes and keep receiving the message "The folder path "My Music" contains an invalid character

I am trying to update iTunes and keep receiving the message "The folder path "My Music" contains an invalid character.
The folder where everything is stored isnt even called My Music, it is just called Music.
I gave up on trying to update my itunes and removed it and am trying to re-download but receive the same message. Now I have no itunes on my computer at all.
Short or wiping my computer and starting again I have no ideas left.
    Please help!

That message isn't referring to the location of the music, it's referring to the location of the iTunes programme.
So the message is either referring to the download location or the folder it is trying to install the programme in. I think (I wouldn't put money on this) that invalid characters will be things such as * ^ % and so on. When you get the message, look for the location that your computer is trying to use. Are there any strange characters in the "file path" that your computer is using?

The installation aboards when I click OK.
The path on my PC is: "C:\Documents and Settings\alexisg\My Documents\My Pictures". I don't see anything wrong with it...
Any idea how to fix it?
    Thanks!

  • "The folder path 'Accessories/Quicktime' contains an invalid character."

After countless attempts to install iTunes 9.2.1 for Windows 64-bit processors I keep getting this message: "The folder path 'Accessories/Quicktime' contains an invalid character."
How do I correct this so I can install and finally use iTunes?

It usually indicates trouble with one of the msi files for an existing program on the PC that is being updated by one of the installers in the iTunes64Setup.exe bundle ... but I'm not familiar with that particular Accessories/QuickTime folder path myself.
Can you check something for me please?
Do a search for an "Accessories" folder on the PC. Do any of them have a "QuickTime" subfolder inside them? If so, what is the full file to those directories?
(Trying to work out which particular msi is causing the trouble ... or if there's a slightly different cause of the problem afoot.)

    Hi Barbara,
I had a similar problem recently and using the "more like this" feature I discovered an answer. To a problem posed by Holo7,  who like myself was a newbie on this platform,  b noir proposed a solution to Holo7's problem that also worked with my problem. It involves downloading a version of MS Windows Instal Cleanup and using it to completely remove all traces of the old version.
If you look at my problem (follow OldGit66) and the link to Holo7's problem then you will find b noir's answer which I think may help you. I am new around here so you might want to wait for one of the higher status correspondents.

  • The folder path 'New Laptop' contains an invalid character

This is what my Laptop displays when I have tried to update iTunes. This immediately stops the installation and says 'a fatal has occured error during installation' resulting in an inability to update my iTunes to 10.3.
I recently put all my music on an external hard drive - I tried to downlad itunes.exe file to hard drive and run it from there but I get the same message.
I don't know what the folder path 'New Laptop' is or where it came from, as I don't remember creating this file.
I have tried to go to my control panel & remove the program (so I could re-download) but it won't let me uninstall or change the program either and the same message appears (in the subject line of this thread)
I am also unable to download the previously suggested Windows Installer CleanUp utility as it's no longer available for download.
Is there some way to override this so I can open up iTunes and change the folder path or whatever it is - I can't uninstall, change or open iTunes
any suggestions and help it very much sought after and appreciated!!

  • The folder path 'c drive' contains an invalid character

is what my pc says when i try to open itunes. it immediately stops the installation and says its a fatal error during installation. this just occurred & i just updated my itunes.
i recently put all my music on an external hard drive - i tried to downlad itunes.exe file to hard drive and run it from there but i get the same message.
i have an iphone & i can't update it because of this message.
i tried to go to my control panel & remove the program (so i could re-download) but it won't let me uninstall or change the program either and the same message appears (in the subject line of this thread)
i am so confused and frustrated - any suggestions and help it very much sought after and appreciated!!

i appreciate your rapid responses to me - it would seem that i am inept at this attempt to figure out why my itunes is suddenly not working due to the above mentioned problem.... to make it more difficult my answer to your question is....
nothing i'm afraid. when i ran that download (known as "windows installer cleanup uninstall") it doesn't give me and option it just runs itself and then when finished i go back to my itunes in my control panel to either change or remove and lo and behold the same message appears - so i feel like i've done nothing at all.
i ran a search for any file called itunes in my hard drive and the setup file is there and when i click on it to see if it will open (or look for those extensions you mentioned earlier) i still can't open the file and 2.) i can't locate those extenions you think might be damaged or bad
i really don't want to call my computer tech to come out to fix this - but i don't want to waste time for any one who is out here to help me!
    still frustrated -

Did anyone came across such issue while deploying Orchard on Azure with TF service? If yes, how did you sort this freaking error?
    Thanks,
    Altaf B.

    Hi AltafB,
For your situation, you can short the path for the source code. Or use a short path for build agent folder in your build definition. You can refer to the links below to solve your problem:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/aaronhallberg/archive/2007/06/20/team-build-and-260-character-paths.aspx

Besides, since you deploy Orchard to Azure, you can also publish it directly using publish profile in Visual Stduio or WebMatrix directly.
