Installation of Nexus 1000v 4.2.1.SV2.1.1 - Operation timed out.

Hi,
We are trying to install the latest version of Nexus 1000v to ESXi5.1 and the installer application is much better than the previos one, but we are having problems with implemetation, because deploying of OVA file times out.
First attempt: Nexus-1 was successfully deployed on ESXi-1, but Nexus-2 which should be deployed on ESXi-2 returned an error: "Deploy OVF template":"Operation timed out."
Second attempt: Deploying of Nexus-1 returned the same error
Third attempt: The same as the first attempt.
It looks like that there is a time limit which is used for deploying OVA file and since file needs to be uploaded to ESXi it takes too long, so the installation fails. Is it possible to extend this time?
BR,  M.

Hi Mtrcek,
The fact that it  gets to the 'Deploy OVF Template' step and then fails still points to one of two possible things:
1. DNS
2. Storage
1. DNS - When you say you put entries in hosts files it tells me you are looking at the DNS on the VC or ESX hosts. What you need to check is the DNS on the vShield Manager. DNS servers need to be configured on the vShield Manager, also a good way to test is to log in to the CLI of the vShield Manager and from there ping by hostname the VC and the ESX servers.
2. Storage - make sure there is enough space on the datastore where you are deploying the vShield Zones firewall and make sure there are no latency/slowness when writing to the disk. A quick test is to install the vShield Zones firewall on local disk, just to rule out the shared storage being the issue. Of course, this is not the recommended installation location and I would strongly suggest to uninstall and then re-install on shared storage once the issue is fixed (Assuming there are issues with shared storage).
ne more thing I noticed from the screenshot is that you have not applied the license keys for vShield App and vShield Edge. I mention this because you say your test plan requires Edge and most likely vShield App (not the free version: Zones). You will need to apply the license keys in order to be able to deploy Edge.
Please check DNS/Storage.

vShield Data Security Installation Fails
Problem
During vShield Data Security installation, I get an error while installing the service virtual machine and an
error message on vSphere client.
NAME=deploy OVF template Target=VMWARE-Data Security-xxxx
Status=operation timed out
Cause
The DNS setup for vShield Manager may not be consistent with the DNS setup for the host in vCenter Server.
Solution
Change the vShield Manager DNS setup so that it matches the host setup.
Regards
please rate if it helps.

  • Installation error Nexus 1000v

When I want to install the Nexus 1000v on a standalone ESX1 5.1 installation I get at Step 5. Confirmation the error (see attachment):
Unable to retrieve deployed VM. Please check VC connection
It's an easy setup with 4 vlans on a trunk, and the managment ip of the ESXi server in vlan 1 which is allowed on the trunk.
What am I doing wrong..... Please help..

I am getting the same error when trying to deploy a new VSM. Tried Layer 2 standard and custom, adjusted different things but can't get it to work. Getting that same error:
Unable to retrieve deployed VM. Please check VC connection.
I am trying to add the VSM with the name '87457-n1kv01.den03'. I checked the hostd.log file and see a bunch of errors. Any idea how to fix this?

  • Nexus 1000v 4.2(1)SV2(2.1a) - License Question

I have two VSM's (vm's) running in HA pair on two blade servers in same HP chassis. In the beginning I was running the 1000v environment using the Eval licensing but now I have installed the Cisco provided license files.
My question is this: When I invoke the command "show license usage NEXUS1000V_LAN_SERVICES_PKG" I see the 6 installed Licenses, however, I also see that the "Installed Licenses in Use equals 0.  Should I see Installed Licenses in Use equal 2?

for some reason my vsm can't the the vem. I could before, but then my server crashed without doing a copy run start and when it booted up all my config but the uplinks was lost.
When I tried to configure the connection again it wasn't working.
I'm also attaching a screen capture of the vds
and a capture of the regular switch.
I will appreciate very much any help you could give me and will provide any configuration details that you might need.
    Thank you so much.

    Carlos,
Looking at vds.jpg, you do not have any VEM vmkernel interface attached to port-profile L3-VSM. So fix VSM-VEM communication problem, you either migrate your VEM management vmkernel interface to L3-VSM port-profile of the vds, or create new VMkernel port on your VEM/host and attach it to L3-VSM port-profile.

  • Nexus 1000V VEM Issues

I am having some problems with VSM/VEM connectivity after an upgrade that I'm hoping someone can help with.
I have a 2 ESXi host cluster that I am upgrading from vSphere 5.0 to 5.5u1, and upgrading a Nexus 1000V from SV2(2.1) to SV2(2.2).  I upgraded vCenter without issue (I'm using the vCSA), but when I attempted to upgrade ESXi-1 to 5.5u1 using VUM it complained that a VIB was incompatible.  After tracing this VIB to the 1000V VEM, I created an ESXi 5.5u1 installer package containing the SV2(2.2) VEM VIB for ESXi 5.5 and attempted to use VUM again but was still unsuccessful
I removed the VEM VIB from the vDS and the host and was able to upgrade the host to 5.5u1.  I tried to add it back to the vDS and was given the error below:
vDS operation failed on host esxi1, Received SOAP response fault from [<cs p:00007fa5d778d290, TCP:esxi1.gooch.net:443>]: invokeHostTransactionCall
Received SOAP response fault from [<cs p:1f3cee20, TCP:localhost:8307>]: invokeHostTransactionCall
An error occurred during host configuration. got (vim.fault.PlatformConfigFault) exception
I installed the VEM VIB manually at the CLI with 'esxcli software vib install -d /tmp/cisco-vem-v164-4.2.1.2.2.2.0-3.2.1.zip' and I'm able to add to to the vDS, but when I connect the uplinks and migrate the L3 Control VMKernel, I get the following error where it complains about the SPROM when the module comes online, then it eventually drops the VEM.

I have tried gracefully removing ESXi-1 from the vDS and cluster, reformatting it with a fresh install of ESXi 5.5u1, but when I try to join it to the N1KV it throws the same error.

    Hi,
The SET_PORT_STATE_FAIL message is usually thrown when there is a communication issue between the VSM and the VEM while the port-channel interface is being programmed.
What is the uplink port profile configuration?
Other hosts are using this uplink port profile successfully?
The upstream configuration on an affected and a working host is the same? (ie control VLAN allowed where necessary)
Per kpate's post, control VLAN needs to be a system VLAN on the uplink port profile.
The VDC SPROM message is a cosmetic defect

  • Nexus 1000v VEM module bouncing between hosts

I'm receiving these error messages on my N1KV and don't know how to fix it.  I've tried removing, rebooting, reinstalling host B's VEM but that did not fix the issue.  How do I debug this?
    My setup,
Two physical hosts running esxi 5.1, vcenter appliance, n1kv with two system uplinks and two uplinks for iscsi for each host.  Let me know if you need more output from logs or commands, thanks.

  • Weird syslog format messages with Nexus 1000v

I'm  trying out the Nexus 1000v, and have the VEM configured to write logs to my  syslog server. The thing is, the messages are in a weird format that my  log management tools cannot parse. Here is an example:
    <189>: 2012 Oct 21 15:22:40 UTC: %VSHD-5-VSHD_SYSLOG_CONFIG_I: Configured from vty by admin on unknown_session
I found the documentation rather  amusing, where it states "The syslog client functionality is RFC-5424  compliant" - doesn't look like they've even read the RFC! This is closer  to the format of the older (but more often found in the wild,  RFC3164... though not compliant with that either :/
Anyway,  I guess the main issue here is that the hostname of the 1000v is not  being added to the logs (it is set in my config). Any ideas how I can  fix this?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Do you have vCenter install on Win2012 Server? The installation would not continue until you have vCenter installed.

  • Nexus 1000v .jar file missing from Nexus1000v.5.2.1.SV3.1.1

    Hello ALL!
I am trying to install and configure Nexus 1000v, for the first time and looking to configure the second stage of linking the Nexus 1000v switch to vCenter and from tutorials and white papers say to continue the install using a .jar file. However not seeing this file in the latest release in 1000v zip file.
I can see this .jar file in the version 4 release and re-downloaded the v5 just incase it was corrupt and from a different machine; no .jar file.

  • Nexus 1000v, VMWare ESX and Microsoft SC VMM

    Hi,
Im curious if anybody has worked up any solutions managing network infrastructure for VMWare ESX hosts/vms with the Nexus 1000v and Microsoft's System Center Virtual Machine Manager.
There currently exists support for the 1000v and ESX and SCVMM using the Cisco 1000v software for MS Hyper-V and SCVMM.   There is no suck support for VMWare ESX.
Im curious as to what others with VMWare, Nexus 1000v or equivalent and SCVMM have done to work around this issue.
    Trying to get some ideas.
    Thanks

    Aaron,
The steps you have above are correct, you will need steps 1 - 4 to get it working correctly.  Normally people will create a separate VLAN for their NLB interfaces/subnet, to prevent uncessisary flooding of mcast frames within the network.
    To answer your questions
    1) I've seen multiple customer run this configuration
    2) The steps you have are correct
    3) You can't enable/disable IGMP snooping on UCS.  It's enabled by default and not a configurable option.  There's no need to change anything within UCS in regards to MS NLB with the procedure above.  FYI - the ability to disable/enable IGMP snooping on UCS is slated for an upcoming release 2.1.
This is the correct method untill the time we have the option of configuring static multicast mac entries on
the Nexus 1000v.  If this is a feature you'd like, please open a TAC case and request for bug CSCtb93725 to be linked to your SR.
This will give more "push" to our develpment team to prioritize this request.
Hopefully some other customers can share their experience.
    Regards,
    Robert

  • SCVMM Kicks out Nexus 1000V Uplink NIC Any ideas?

The SCVMM suddenly kicks out the Nexus 1000V Uplink NIC,
thus preventing me from remediating the change.
Also i get this error message
Using Hyper V as virtualization platform

    Hello,
You can use one Ethernet port-profile with a channel-group command (like 'channel-group auto mode on mac-pinning') and assign it to all the vmnic interfaces that need to carry the same set of VLANs
The same port-profile can be used on other hosts too. The N1k would automatically bundle (port-channel) the interfaces that belong to the same ESX host (accomplished through the 'channel-group auto' command)
If you need the interfaces to carry separate sets of VLANs, then you need a different port-profile.
Port-profile is just a container for a common set of configuration that you can apply for multiple interfaces across multiple hosts.
    Thanks,
    Shankar

  • Firewall between Nexus 1000V VSM and vCenter

    Hi,
Customer has multiple security zones in environment, and VMware vCenter is located in a Management Security Zone. VSMs in security zones have dedicated management interface facing Management Security Zone with firewall in between. What ports do we need to open for the communication between VSMs and vCenter? The Nexus 1000V troubleshooting guide only mentioned TCP/80 and TCP/443. Are these outbound from VSM to vCenter? Is there any requirements from vCenter to VSM? What's the best practice for VSM management interface configuration in multiple security zones environment? Thanks.

    Avi -
You need the connection between vCenter and the VSM anytime you want to add or make any changes to the existing port-profiles.  This is how the port-profiles become available to the virtual machines that reside on your ESX hosts.
One problem when the vCenter is down is what you pointed out - configuration changes cannot be pushed
The VEM/VSM relationship is independent of the VSM/vCenter connection.  There are separate VLANs or L3 interfaces that are used to pass information and heartbeats between the VSM and its VEMs.

  • Can a Nexus 1000v be configured to NOT do local switching in an ESX host?

Before the big YES, use an external Nexus switch and use VN-Tag. The question is when there is a 3120 in a blade chassis that connects to the ESX hosts that have a 1000v installed on the ESX host. So, first hop outside the ESX host is not a Nexus box.
Looking for if this is possible, if so how, and if not, where that might be documented. I have a client who's security policy prohibits switching (yes, even on the same VLAN) within a host (in this case blade server). Oh and there is an insistance to use 3120s inside the blade chassis.
Has to be the strangest request I have had in a while.
Any data would be GREATY appreciated!

    Thanks for the follow up.
So by private VLANs, are you referring to "PVLAN":
"PVLANs: PVLANs are a new feature available with the VMware vDS and the Cisco Nexus
1000V Series. PVLANs provide a simple mechanism for isolating virtual machines in the
same VLAN from each other. The VMware vDS implements PVLAN enforcement at the
destination host. The Cisco Nexus 1000V Series supports a highly efficient enforcement
mechanism that filters packets at the source rather than at the destination, helping ensure
that no unwanted traffic traverses the physical network and so increasing the network
bandwidth available to other virtual machines"

  • VN-Tag with Nexus 1000v and Blades

    Hi folks,
A while ago there was a discussion on this forum regarding the use of Catalyst 3020/3120 blades switches in conjunction with VN-tag.  Specifically, you can't do VN-Tag with that Catalyst blade switch sitting inbetween the Nexus 1000V and the Nexus 5000.  I know there's a Blade switch for the IBM blade servers, but will there be a similar version for the HP C-class blades?  My guess is NO, since Cisco just kicked HP to the curb.  But if that's the case, what are my options?  Pass-through switches?  (ugh!)
