Installation of Solaris 10 on Dell Optiplex 745

Hi,
I am new to Solaris. I am planning to install Solaris 10 10/08 on my Dell Optiplex 745 with the following config,
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 6300 @ 1.86 GHz
No if Bits: 64 Bits
RAM: 2 GB
HDD: 160GB
Monitor: Dell 17" Plug and Play
I would like to know if i can install Solaris 10 on this machine. If i am likely to face some problems, can you please detail the same.
Thanks,
Ashwin

  • Problem with restoring an Image to Dell Optiplex 745

    Hello,
i try to restore my image to my new Dell Optiplex 745 machines. I am
using ZFD4.01IR7 with the boot-cd from zenimaging.info which uses the
zfd7 imaging engine. I am able to restore the image but unfortunately my
local (and only...) Administrator is not in the Administrators group
anmyore. The Group membership shows only an SID, perhaps the old
Administrators SID... So i cannot install drivers for the included NIC
in order to use DLU for logging in with an Administrator from edir.
I know that that is an unsupported environment with the mixed versions
of ZfD but it works for other machines.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Thomas

hmm.. bring down the image manually, remove the just imaged flag with
zisedit from ZISD, start windows and check if that helps

  • M9748LL/A   vs  Dell Optiplex 745

I am toying with jumping over  back to Apple since 1991 when I had to give up my Apple II/E for a AST PC.  I am looking at Powermac M9748LL/A and want to know if  I will be able to remove my memory from a DELL Optiplex 745 and put into M9748LL/A?   What about hard drive?

    Hello & welcome back... maybe!
As far as RAM, that G5 needs...
    184-pin
    DDR PC3200
    64x8 device based 128x64 Module
    8 Non-Stacked TRUE PC3200 Devices per side
    Data Rate = 400MHz
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/3200DDR2GBP/
Many PC3200 "PC" Value RAM or Stacked RAM will not work.
On the Hard Drives, the G5 uses SATA1 1.5Gb/s drives, but depending what exact drives your Dell has, there may be workarounds.

  • S10 U3 on Dell Optiplex 745

Has anyone gotten this to work? It "almost" seems to with some
poking of the driver aliases etc. Can get the bge interface to be
UP but not RUNNING and the ethernet addr is 0:0:0ish. Have
put in the latest kernel patch and 125412-01.
The NIC is either a BROADCOM 5751 or 5754 depending on who
    you beleive.
    Thanks.
    -T

I tried to plug the OS11 bge driver into Sol10 but
    failed. I tried several methods,
but all ended up with the modinfo entry showing
    version v0.49 of the broadcom
driver being loaded. Weird. I've just finished trying the above, too. The problem you had
can be avoided by moving aside the Solaris-10 bge driver files
before installing the SUNWbge package. The S10U3 bge files
    are in /platform/i386/kernel/drv/ and .../drv/amd64/.
However, even after the above, the SUNWbge driver fails to load
on S10U3, complaining of many missing symbols. Likely this is
due to the S11 bge driver having been moved into the new GLD
network driver framework (so aggregation, etc. will be supported).
I think the S10U3 kernel just isn't ready for SUNWbge yet, apparently
not even with kernel patches up to today's level (125101-09).
Note, however, that I did get the Broadcom-supplied bcme driver
to work on the Optplex 745. This is the one downloaded from
their "server" site, since there is no Solaris driver on their "desktop"
driver section. I downloaded BRCMbcme package from:
    http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/netxtreme_server.php
    http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/driver-sla.php?driver=570x-Solaris
It was necessary after installing the BRCMbcme package, to:
    update_drv -a -i '"pciex14e4,167a"' bcme
After that, things are working normally.

    Marion

When I try to image a dell 745 I get an error that says "No network

What is the fix for this as well, can I just change some settings in the

This is not possible for a 745. None of the Core 2 EXTREME series works.  You need at least a precision T3400 with Bios A09 with its performance heatsink and 525W power supply.  The QX6600 is a 130W Quad core CPU.

  • Hardware Compatibility List for installation of solaris 10 on DELL units

    Hi,
I have a requirement to install solaris 10 on a few Dell servers and desktops.
I was unable to install on Dell PowerEdge SC1435 and noticed it is not on the HCL for Dell servers. This unit has dual core AMD Opteron processors. Is the HCL kept up to date, I noticed items 58 and 59 had the same description (SC1430). Should I abondon further attempts and go to the SC2950 which is on the HCL?
Also on the desktop side, both my choices, Dell OptiPlex 745 dual core, and Dell Precision 690 dual core are not on the HCL. A possible alternative on the HCL is the Precision 670.
    Any info would be apprecitate.

I am also having the same issue on a Dell Poweredge SC1435. I get a "ERROR: The disc you inserted is not a Solaris OS/DVD" right after I select the machine to automatically reboot after it finishes installing. It then kicks me out to a Unix shell prompt and I notice that the CD is no longer mounted when I do a "df -k". I've done some research on the web and none of the proposed solutions worked. I'm assuming this has something to do with hardware conflicts with the machine and the fact that the machine is not on the Hardware Compat List yet.
Plus, I know my cd media is good, since I was able to install Solaris 10 x86 perfectly fine on my Dell Poweredge SC420. I'm using the latest Solaris 10 11/06 CD media.

    1) How do I copy a img file, i.e bcmedu.img which file size is
1.47MB to a 1.44 diskette when the PC is unable to
    connect to network?
    2) Where can I get a copy of the driver for bcme.bef to be

    3) Is there a way to install NIC driver through other media other than diskette in Device Configuration Assistant?
Note: I have followed the Installation and Configuration Guide provided by SUN and Boardcom but has yet to make the network card detected despited I have been re-installed the OS many times.
Your great help is much appreciated.
    Regards,

i was facing the same problem just hours ago.
i successfully installed broadcom driver into solaris 10 with Dell GX280
i copy broadcom driver into a CD and run it on solaris pc.
i copied out the file into a directory and use pkgadd -d BRCMbcme.pkg and voila. My pc detected the network card.
    Then start configuring your network.
It works for me. Hope it works for u.
remember to read the readme file which come with the broadcom driver.

Sometimes, it's just easier and faster
to just start all over and re-install,
particularly when you have only a fresh install on your system.
This time, do not choose to include all the optional "documentation"
(that's what is held on CD5).
I have never found a reason to ever read that documentation so I stopped installing it.
... or you could download and burn a copy of CD5 and use it when prompted.

  • Apex giving installation problem on dell optiplex xe system

    Hi
We have installed apex 4 on dell optiplex xe , but it display the source code when we use page forwared and backward of mozilla firefox. We also use the same versionon our laptpops and other non branded computer , it working fine.

This case is similar to the case handled by Jurgen Keil on Digest Number 385 except that my case, it has a different error message.
At the prompt "Select type of installation" (or the prompt
"Select (b)oot or (i)nterpreter:", I type the command "b kadb -d". I see a General Protection Fault and some messages which cause the system to reboot. But I can't capture all the errors/messages cuz there's no system dump device configured.
How do I configured the system dump device so I can send you more details?
    Thank you.

I have also tried installing opensolaris 9/07 Express Dev snv_70b with the same issue.
I tried disabling all unnecessary hardware in the BIOS as well.
After GNU GRUB loads and I select Solaris install after about 20 dots.... I get:

I am only installing Solaris 10 - no other OS will be on the HD.
Is there any hope for getting SolX installed on this machine or should I return this hardware and by a different model? I have to build 2 pc's with SolX for development boxs.

  • Cannot install NI-DAQmx on Dell Optiplex 3010

I am trying to install NI Drivers on Dell Optiplex 3010 machines.  We have many of these machines - our IT department appears to have stocked up on them.  During installation of the NI Drivers the installation will simply stop progressing when it hits some % complete (the actual % varies from one installation attempt to the next).  There are no error messages, no timeouts, etc.  - it will simply stay at that point and never progress or stop until the machine is rebooted.
I have traced it down to the NI-DAQmx drivers.  I can install all of the other drivers as long as I don't install NI-DAQmx (or anything that depends on it).  Even just trying to install NI-DAQmx without other drivers that depend on it produces the same issue.  I have not had any driver installation issues on other Win7 machines that are not Optiplex 3010s.
Anybody else see this or have any ideas on how to resolve it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Devin

    Hello dbentley!
    Some thoughts:
Sometimes, the windows installers can encounter problems during the installation progress, due to the Windows Update manager. Have you tried installing the required updates on your Windows machine (I'm assuming you are using Windows 7), before installing the NI Drivers?
Are you running the installers from the network? Have you confirmed that there are no network issues (e.g. connection drops) to that machine?
    Best regards!
