Installation prob - iTunes folder cannot be found in My Music

Hello all,
I've tried several times over the last few days to install iTunes and keep coming up with the same problem. The error message reads ...
The folder “iTunes” cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the “My Music” folder.
I have checked and the "My Music" folder is there. I've deleted and recreated the folder several times. I've even tried creating an "iTunes" folder in it.
I've read the "Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime software in Windows" page at itunes.com and followed the instructions to download Tweak UI from the Microsoft PowerToys website. Problem is, once I get into Tweak UI and go to "Special Folders", the "My Music" folder doesn't appear in the list. "My Pictures" folder does appear and "My Music" is sitting in the same directory with the same properties as far as I can see by looking via Explorer.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

some folks with that complication have some joy with the alternate technique from the following Nigel Carpenter post:

  • Folder Cannot be Found

Sometimes when I try to open itunes, I get an error message that reads "itunes folder cannot be found" When I restart the MAC and try again, it fixes the problem temporarily. I think this might've started after I installed Norton Antivirus, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions?

Disable the Norton and see what happens. I used to use Norton back with OS9 and had nothing but problems and have never used Norton with OSX.

any help would be greatly appreciated

This is usually due to a problem with the registry setting for My Music, see this Apple article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302398
Occasionally the method using TweakUI doesn't work and a registry edit is required, I cna give you the method for that if required.

  • Importing CD's to iTunes fail with "The required folder cannot be found"

I have my iTunes library on an external drive.  Everything works fine, except that I cannot import CD's into iTunes.  When I try, I get the error "The required folder cannot be found".  My work around currently is to:
    1. Upfdate my preference for "iTunes Media Folder Location" to the standard location by clicking on the "Reset" button.
    2. Import the CD
    3. Copy the folder that it created with the songs to the correct location on the external disk
    4. Update the preference or Folder Location back to my external library location
    5. Double click on the first song where I get the message that it cannot be located
    6. Locate it manually, and iTunes then searches for the others and fix the location.
This is extremely frustrating and impractical.  I am on the very latest release and it is still happening.  Does anyone know how to get around it?

I have the same problem as pyzaptys' with the exception that there is no My Music folder in the default location. I created one but the iTunes install cannot see it. I used the tweakui as suggested in the response to the original post but the app does not see the My Music folder in the special folders selections.
I have tried many angles but to no avail.

Consistently receive the following message after importing serveral songs from CD into iTunes (latest ver 11.1.5.5)...

I have the same problem.  I recently moved my music from a Vista PC to a new Laptop with an external CD drive. It will copy one song from the CD and it will show in the Music file and then I get the message ' Error importing a CD - Folder not found'.  I must unplug the CD drive and plug it back in.  I have seen no fix for this problem.

  • "required folder cannot be found" error in iTunes 11 with iphone 5

I'm getting the "Attempting to copy to the disk "Macintosh HD" failed. The required folder cannot be found" error when I sync my iPhone with iTunes. I haven't split my iTunes media library or moved it to an external drive--everything's on the internal hard drive on my 2011 iMac, which is running 10.6.8 and iTunes 11.05. (I was also getting the error on iTunes 10.XX--thought the upgrade might help, but the error persists.) So does this mean my iPhone is NOT really backing up to my hard drive when I get this error? The Summary page for my phone in iTunes still updates the sync date and time each time I try to sync, so it looks as if the backup is actually occuring. How can I get this message to go away?

Try creating a new itunes library. Just move your music folder somewhere else for a while, and itunes should create a new one on launch. (Quit itunes before moving).
Now try downloading you music again. You shouldn't have to pay for this again. I had some problems downloading something I bought a while back, although I can't remember how I did it I was able to re-download the thing. Just search around, shouldn't be to hard to find.
    Good luck.

  • My itunes app was working fine then all of a sudden I'm getting an error - The Itunes application could not be opened.  The required folder cannot be found.  But it doesn't tell me what folder.

I am using Windows Vista.  My itunes launched fine until now.  Now I get an error - "The Itunes application could not be opened.  The required folder cannot be found".  I have no idea what file it is looking for.  Has anyone seen this error?
I have also tried to uninstall the package and I get the error Could not access network location %APPDATA%\.  And it won't uninstall.  I don't know why it's complaining in both cases.
Itunes was working 3 weeks ago with no problem.

  • Been trying to access any service iTunes has, but am stopped with, "The Folder Cannot Be Found." Any fixes?

Hello. I've been trying to use any of the functions in iTunes, but to no avail. I seem to be stumped with the window that keeps popping up, telling me, "The Folder Cannot Be Found." Any advice?

Backup catalogs wouldn't have helped with this problem anyway, but naturally, you shouldn't delete backup catalogs for a while.

  • Itunes not showing elements 11 drop down list of albums and won't sync, says ïtunes cannot sync, required folder cannot be found. ï have tried re installing both but no success. pls help!!!

Hi, Itunes won't sync my photos to ipad from elements 11. itunes doesn't show drop down list of albums and says Ipad "......cannot be synced, required folder cannot be found" i have tried re installing both programs but no luck. pls help!!!

I managed to finally fix the problem in a relatively painless way. It turned out that the problem wasn't on my phone, the problem was with iTunes. I completely uninstalled iTunes from my PC and then reinstalled it and everything was fine.
In order to completely uninstall iTunes, I did two things:
Used RevoUninstaller to uninstall iTunes. This cleans out a bunch of extra things that the normal iTunes uninstaller misses.
Searched for any iTunes folders/files on my computer (using the freeware utility called Everything) and deleted them manually.
I hope that works for you.

  • The folder containing iTunes library cannot be found.

I recently cosolidated my iTunes library into a new folder. Then I dragged it to the desktop and deleted the messed up folder I was using before. Everything was working fine untill I started my computer this morning and clicked on iTiunes. The message "the folder containing iTunes library cannot be found" appeared

apparently I didnt ask a question so I went to edit post and made it into a question. There was no button to post edited version, just save it. So I saved it and guess what nothing. So now im posting to my origional post. How do I get my iTunes back?

  • Error importing CD (required folder cannot be found)

iTunes 10.6, running on a Mac Mini with OSX 10.6.8
    Hi all,
A bit of backstory. Been using iTunes to manage my music collection for over 8 years. At one point, I moved my music off of a primary disk to an external disk, although perhaps oddly set up, in that the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file was still local (under ~User/Music), and just the music files were external (under /Volumes/Media/Music).  When the iTunes Media directory structure upgrade happened, the only way I could access my music was to put a soft link from the Music folder to my external drive.
For awhile now, I've been in a state where for the most part, I can listen to all of my music, but when I try to import a CD, I get the 'required folder cannot be found' error.
Help!  Do I have to rebuild my file somehow?  Edit the xml file directly?
    Thanks so much.
I'm happy to provide more information, such as the xml file, directory listings, etc..  I'm just not sure what's helpful.

It will copy one song from the CD and it will show in the Music file and then I get the message ' Error importing a CD - Folder not found'.  I must unplug the CD drive and plug it back in.  I have seen no fix for this problem.
