Installation problems in Compaq Presario V2617LA Laptop

Hello,
I am new in all of this Unix-Linux world and I need some help, here's my problem:
I have already partitioned and prepared my HDD to install Solaris, Windows and maybe Fedora (if someone recommends a better Linux it'll be appreciated), all of those three partitions perfectly identified and ready for the OS (it happens that I learn quickly, but I'm still new on this). I perfectly pass all Solaris 10 11/06 installation windows and requirements and Solaris begins installation, BUT when it all looks great, the installation (progress bar) just stops moving having 209.29 MBytes remaining and installing the 'Solstice Enterprise Agents 1.0.3 files for root file system', the wierdest thing is that the little slash-dash at the end is still turning around, the working processor light is on and nothing freezes (except when I navigate through the menu options), I have waited for a whole day and the installation does not finish and even re-downloaded Solaris and burn the image again two times and nothing.
Could it be a hardware compatibility problem? What do you think?
My Laptop specs are the following:

  • Problem with Compaq Presario V6000 laptop

Hi forum members! I am a newbie to this forum and i would like to introduce myself, my name is Hammy and I am from Glasgow. I have a problem with my laptop whih is a Compaq Presario V6000 running windows Vista, 32 bit product number V6254EA.
A few weeks ago when i turned on the computer it failed to boot up, the only thing visible on the screen is the bar at the bottom of the screen with `Microsoft Corporation` displayed below it.
I have tried starting it up in SAFE MODE but all that happens is that a certain amount of windows system drivers are loaded and then goes no further!
I have purchased recovery discs with no joy! I have also tried a hard reset which has not solved the problem. I tried the `hard drive self test, which after approx 30 seconds carrying out a quick test displayed the following message #1- 07 Fail.
If it is the hard drive or the motherboard that has failed is it possible to replace them.
    Thanks

Did you burn the recovery disks? Will follow up with the manual and a link to buy the hdd.

  • Problem with Compaq Presario CQ60 Laptop

Periodically laptop will not turn on.  I had a message "critically low battery".  Tried plugging in and no response.  couple of days later, computer responded and did turn on.  This situation causes great distress as I fear work will be lost forever.  do i need new battery?  Please advise.  Helene

    Hi,
Let me summarize, your laptop won't start from time to time and you had (have?) a "critically low battery" message.
When your laptop doesn't start, plugging in does not help.
When you face the problem, try to remove the battery from your laptop, plug it in and try to boot without the battery.
Batteries are well known to cause that kind of issue and if your computer does start without the battery then you may need to replace it with a new one.
But before you purchase a new battery, have a look there :

This tool will certainly help you.
Regarding your files, even though at that point there seems to be little to fear, you should always back them up as they are more valuable to you than any piece of hardware!
With an up to date backup, anything can happen to your computer, you're safe otherwise there is always a tiny chance they can't be recovered (it's impossible, as an example, to recover files from a stolen laptop...)

  • Upgrading Compaq Presario V2000 laptop

    hello everyone,
I am planning on upgrading a Compaq presario V2000 laptop i currently own. I heard that it cna can only run on PC2700 RAM with a max of 1gb per slot. Currently, I have 2 X 256mb sticks installed so i plan to remove one of them and install a 1GB stick and i was wondering whether this is compatible with the laptop:
    http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/p_3274_PNY_Sodimm_1GB_DDR333_PC_2700_for_Laptop
I also wanted to upgrade the hard-drive as 40gbs just doesn't cut it for me. Does anyone know whether the V2000 can hold two hard-drives? Also what hard-drives are supported by the V2000? Will any IDE 2.5" hard-drive fit in or does it only support 5400rpm drives?
    Thank you,
    Babaquazi

Your max memory is 2 gigs or 2 x 1 gb and yes it uses DDR333 SO-DIMM memory. Here is the Crucial.com page for it:

    Here is the Manual:
    Manual
Turn to Page 5-6 for hard drive replacement. Don't forget to save the little connector piece that goes over the hard drive pins and place it on the new drive. There is only room for one (1) drive.
You can use any IDE (PATA) 2.5 inch laptop drive of any size and rotation speed. A 7200 rpm drive will boost performace significantly.
Not sure if you have the Intel or AMD version of the V2000 but the processor is also upgradeable if you happen to have one using the Celeron or Sempron processor.

  • Compaq Presario CQ62 laptop does not see SD card

I have a Compaq Presario CQ62 laptop (Windows 7 64bit) that has a built in media card reader that has never worked.
When I insert the SD card it makes the "USB Beep Up sound" that says it sees the card - but when I go to MY COMPUTER, there is no device listed for the SD card.  How do I read and write to an SD card with this laptop?

    I have done that.
In DEVICE MANAGER I can see the SD Card show up under "Disk Drives" when the SD card is inserted, and disappear when it is removed.
Under Storage>Disk Management the SD card shows up as drive 1 (main drive is drive 0) but no drive letter.
When I right-click on the SD card Drive 1 and try to change to a drive letter, I get an error message and it will not let me.  It will not let me format either.
The driver is from microsoft and is old - 6/21/2006. I did some google searching and read that a driver update would fix the issue. I uninstalled the card reader driver, got a new driver from HP and installed it, and when I inserted the SD card it loaded up the old driver...ugh.

  • Compaq Presario 2100 Laptop SSD Upgrade

I have a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop the was brand new in 2003. I have a newer laptop, but an currently trying to upgrade the Presario 2100 as much as possible. It's kind of a project now and I also want to get as much use as possible out of it. I have heard that the SSDs are super fast and would improve performance quite a bit. Has anyone made the upgrade to a SSD for their Persario 2100 series laptop already? All input is appreciated, especially all of the product info that was used for the upgrade. If nobody has done this, then does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade the Presario 2100 series laptop to a SSD?
    Thanks,
    Huck

Believe it or not the Service Manual is still available.
    Manual
The Presario 2100 uses old school PATA (EIDE) hard drives which are different than the SATA SSDs you mostly see on the market. However, there are PATA SSDs. They cost a bit more per gig, obviously. I have put a PATA SSD in a laptop of about the same vintage as the Presario 2100 and it did improve the boot time and general performance significantly, but talk about the proverbial earrings on a pig!
This is a 64 gig PATA SSD which would be perfect for the Presario 2100 but is $90:

On eBay you will probably find 32 gig versions for a bit less.

Cable code isn't going to help what you need the the cable part number. Without this no one will be able to help you locate the cable. Also you should tells us the P/N that will insure someone can look into what the part is and also what is that cable for as there is no discription what it does or connects to.

  • Compaq Presario CQ57 Laptop System Bios recovery problem

A customer of mine has a Compaq Presario CQ57 that has developed a BIOS problem.
I am unsure if it had had a BIOS update through HP Support Assistant or if it just decided to start for no reason but it now intermittently decides to recover the System BIOS at start up.
It is all very random. It may not do it for a while - working fine every time it is switched on - but then just decides to go into this recovery. Sometimes the recovery sorts it first time, sometimes it has to go through the recovery mode several times before it sorts it out. Once sorted, Windows and the laptop work fine.
I have tried to remedy it by installing BIOS updates. There are 4 available on the HP website. I have installed all four at various points - sometimes they install, sometimes they fail. Sometimes the recovery mode kicks in straight after - usually after a fail which makes sense. Other times it will work OK for many start ups and then just go back to it's old tricks.
Any suggestions would be very helpful.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello rmaiden,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your Compaq Presario CQ57-212NR gives you an error after running the system recovery.
Can you tell me if this error loads within Windows or if it prevents you from starting up.
I would suggest you acquire an ISO image of Windows 7 and burn it to a DVD. Use this to install Windows and then run the recovery after. This should remedy the problem.
Let me know if this works for you!

  • Touch pad problems on Compaq Presario C56

    Hi,

I recently purchased a Compaq Presario C56 with Windows 7, and already the mousepad/touchpad is developing problems in that it is quite slow and sometimes fails to respond to any touch from the finger tips. It is noticeably worse when the using the laptop when the battery is charging.
I have installed the latest drivers for the touchpad, and in terms of other software that I have installed, I have AVG free running and a few other applications installed such as Blackberry Desktop software, Google Chrome, Microsoft Office.
Is there any know issues similar to this with the touchpad?

  • HP compaq Presario C700 LAPTOP NO Power

Hi I have a compaq presario c717nr that works with a charged battery, my ac adapter works as I have an hp pavillion d6000 and it works, also tested the ac adapter from my pavillion on the presario and it does not power up with out the battery, when plugged in to ac adapter with the battery on it says charging but it does not charge or power the laptop on ac power only. need help

I have exactly the same C717NR and same exact symptoms. It will work with a charged battery. With AC adapter in, the power jack blue led comes on only if the battery is on. And as u said, it doesnt really charge as I see that the battery charge is dwindling. Also, as soon as you remove the battery, the ac power jack led goes off. The laptop cannot be run directly via AC. I checked an exact same c717NR and his works fine on AC even when you remove battery while windows is on.
So my question is whether if its the dc power jack that bad or some thing else is messed up? I can say I even swapped mother board and had the same problem.
    Thanks.

  • Compaq Presario 2586US laptop - hard drive upgrade

I recently took a chance and bought 2 "parts only" Compaq Presario 2500 series laptops off Ebay and was able to make a single working PC with the motherboard from the 2586US being the motherboard I used.  I did not have a hard disk, so I bought a Samsung 160gb ATA drive.  Turns out I didn't need the little adapter on the bus end because it just plugged right into the socket on the motherboard.  The drive is supposed to be either ATA133 or ATA100 at the top end (I don't remember which).  I put the drive in and installed Windows.  I noticed that it seemed slow but Windows showed the disk at full size.  Then I went to dual-boot with a Linux distribution and encountered errors.  Through a lot of searching on the web I found out the BIOS and apparently the IDE interface itself (?) doesn't allow a disk larger than 137gb.  I checked the BIOS and indeed it says maximum usable size 137gb.  It also shows the transfer rate at DMA2 which, if I understand things correctly means it is only transferring at 33mb instead of 100mb or 133mb.  The service manual says ATA100, so it should support a DMA5 transfer rate.
I don't claim to understand all of this at all.  So, I'm looking for help.
    (1) Is there anyway to go beyond 137gb on a hard drive in this laptop?
    (2) If not, is the fact that my drive is actually 160gb when the PC only supports 137gb causing more problems?
    (3) What do I have to do to get a transfer rate beyond DMA2?  The BIOS setup won't let me tab to that field to change it.
Thank you for any help and explanations that I can understand.  Keep in mind I'm just your average Joe and not some sort of expert at all.  I found a lot of this on the web but not sure what it all means.
    Thanks in advance!
    Dave
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

It originally had a 256mb and a 512mb SODIMM, but they were unmatched.  I just went ahead and bought 2  Samsung 512mb matched SODIMM's, so I have 1 gig of memory.
I installed Windows XP Professional SP2, then the Compaq drivers, then SP3, then all the Windows updates, then I installed ubuntu Linux 10.04 - 1 small partition for swap, 1 larger partition for everything else.
I did re-do my disk:  I shrank the Windows partition again, deleted the Linux partitions so I had 1 huge empty space, then created a 30gig partition at the end of the drive, then installed Linux.  Windows still seems to work fine, and Linux at least boots now.  So I guess the first thing I'm going to do is waste 30gb of space for being dumb when I bought the drive.  The DMA2 thing has me bothered - the Service Manual lists the 2500 series as all ATA100.  Is it possible that as one web site said, the BIOS is detecting too large of drive and therefore thinks an error and slows the drive down?  I would have thought since the Service Manual  (page 1-23, Mass Storage ) says it supports ATA100 (ultraDMA5?) that it would either say DMA5 in the transfer field or at least let me change it.
This is getting quite a bit above my knowledge base as far as why it's running the transfer at DMA2.  On the Internal Hard Disk BIOS set up page it says "Auto" for the type.  When I change that to "User Defined", I can tab to the transfer field, but the selections are all PIO or up to DMA2 - nothing above that.  That seems like some kind of BIOS error or else the Service Manual is in error.
Thanks for your help so far!   Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
    Dave
