Installed a new hdd, want to install from time machine
I just had a new hdd put into my 2009 macbook. I was trying to reinstall all my files from time machine but only 60 of the 200gb appeared. What is my best course of action?
Thanks
No, there isn't any way to connect them, but it doesn't really make any difference - if you installed from disks, you use Software Update to keep it current. If you use the app store version, you download the latest update.
The thing that probably matters is that your serial number represents your license to use the software.

Hi Guys,
I currently have a mid 2009 Macbook pro and I decided to upgrade the current HD in it to an Intel 330 SSD. Which might I add was a *gongshow*.
Anyways before I did the switch I used Time Machine to back up all my information, and to be double redundant I backed up the REALLY important information on a 8gig flashdrive.
The removal and reinstall of the new drive went smooth, and once lion was installed I did all the usual system updates.
Once it came to importing files from Time Machine is when my hassle started.
The last backup I did on Time Machine with the old HD still installed was at 10:00 this morning.
I had the new SSD up and running and a new backup of that created by 1:00 (3 hours later).
When I loaded up Time Machine to grab some files off of my 10:00 backup, it would not let me. The current backups have a Grey/Silver snapshot, and the backups from the OLD HD were blacked out and I could not click on them. What can I do to get these files off my Time Machine from the old HD?
ThanksQuick followup question,
If I do a migrate with the time machine will the system be updated to the version I had when I made it (10.8.6 I think) or will I have to do the system updates afterwards. If so, will that cause any clashes when applying the time machine migration? -
Hello,
Is it better to migrate to a new MacBook Pro (non Retina display) using FireWire, from Time Machine, or over ethernet? The older Mac is a MacBook (Intel, 2007 vintage). The Time Machine backup is to a Western Digital external drive with FireWire & USB ports.
Thanks!
ChipsThanks for the helpful reply.
After posting, I read & researched further. We're going to be limited by the hardware – the MacBook & external drive both have FireWire 400, & we don't have a 400 to 800 cable or adapter. So we'll connect by ethernet, & be patient that it make take some time.
I have to assume that Migration Assistant will be just as comprehensive regardless of the connection method / protocol.
Best! -
My Safari "quits unexpectedly" each time I try to start it on my new MacBook Air after I transferred it from my MacBook via migration from time machine backup disk.

New MBP set up - restore from time machine
My old MacBook (mid 2007) running Snow Leopard has died. I just got a new MBP Retina running Yosemite.
Now, I have a few question that I googled for answers, but I am confused. I would appreciate any help, guide, orientation.
(1) Will I have problems restoring from Time Machine, created on a Snow Leopard, to a new MBP running Yosemite?
(2) Should I say yes when the set up assistant ask me to "restore from a back up"?
My goal is to have all the files, apps, and configuration from my old Mac into the new one keeping the new OS.
Is that possible?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Vero.I got "stuck" here:
"For details and instructions, see the appropriate page:
Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion
Using Setup Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard
Using Setup Assistant / Migration Assistant on Panther or Tiger"
I have Yosemite, should I follow the instruction for Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion?
I apologize if my question is "dumb" I just don't wanna mess up anything. I also realize my time machine has been created in Lion not Snow Leopard.
Thanks again! -
Brand new iMac, Can I restore from Time machine or start new?
My Mac Pro died a month ago so I am replacing it with a 27 Inch iMac. I had a time machine back up on my Mac Pro. When I get my iMac can I restore from the time machine so that I don't have to go through installing all of my programs again or should I start fresh and install everything fr
It's probably "better" to put a fresh install of everything but it certainly isn't the easiest or fastest. I'd say if everythg was running fine at the time of your last TM backup I'd restore from the TM probably using Migration Assistant. Installing and registering a bunch of software can be a pain. I've always used Migration Assistant when I get a new Mac. What happened to the Mac Pro? Is the hard drive still available? You could stick it into an external enclosure and migrate from that.
-
plz help me out
TimeMachine 'knows' that this is a new computer so you have to open up the TimeMachine control panel and tell it what hard drive to use for backing up. Also the first backup will be a complete backup because it is a different computer.

New harddrive in MacBook - restore from time machine not working correctly
Recently put a new Samsung drive into my White 2007 MacBook. I put the snow leopard disk and selected restore from backup onto the newly formatted Samsung drive. After 4 or so hours it says it has completed successfully and the computer needs to re start.
After this the computer boots the apple logo appears and the spinning thingy spins. It stays at this screen and won't go any further. Any ideas?
Should I install a fresh copy of snow leopard first then restore from backup?Hi William:
Should I install a fresh copy of snow leopard first then restore from backup?
According to this article, yes (the new HD fits the description, I think):

Installed new hard drive and want to restore from time machine.
Get as far as 'select a destination' then it goes no further - just keeps 'searching for disks'
Help anyone please?1. Be sure your drive is attached and mounted.
2. If you have already written any data to the drive, back it up before proceeding to the next step.
3. In the Finder, choose Go > Utilities. The /Applications/Utilities folder will open.
4. Launch Disk Utility.
5. Click the icon for your external hard drive in the sidebar on the left.
6. Click the Erase tab along the top of the window.
7. From the Volume Format menu, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
8. Enter a name for the external hard drive in the Name field.
9. Click the Erase button.
Make Sure that you choose the correct drive -
Erase and install - Can I select what I want to put back on from Time Machine.
I've been suffering from the super slow Yosemite problem. I have had two long sessions with the very nice people on Apple support and have we have made some progress - thank you Marie and Cheryl. They have suggested an 'erase and install' to resolve the problem.
I regularly back up my laptop to 'Time Machine' but I don't want to just reload everything as that may just bring the problem back again. So, the question is can I select which files and applications I want to recover from Time Machine? Here's what you should do:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
Once you know it's running properly you can begin re-installing your third-party software from the original media. Finally, restore your data from your Time Machine backup. This assures that all but your data files are freshly installed. -
Migrate, restore from Time Machine or fresh install
Folks
Getting an MBP today and migrating from MBA. Should I fresh install, use the migrate tool or restore from Time Machine? You are going to get several answers here depending on users' opinion and experiences. My own view, having done the Time Machine backup as demo in a class, is that, if you have the time and all the settings written down, the best way is to start from scratch. Indeed, the last two Macs I bought, I even installed the OS myself, despite them being out of the box.
Having written that, I do find Time Machine a useful facility and it is possible to selectively bring the data back, which is really quite useful with a new machine. This would be a great tool in the case of a stolen computer or if a hard disk had crashed and it was necessary to get up and running quickly. As a note, I still found that with the TM restore, certain parts (such as Mailboxes and some other network related security stuff) still needed setting up again.
I did use the migrate tool once and was not over-convinced although I understand it has been updated. Someone else should offer an opinion on that.
If time is of the essence, go for the TM or Migrate tool. If you want a more stable and secure environment (perhaps that backup could bring over a problem), go from scratch with a selective backup. -
Setting up a new mac lion from time machine backup...how do you do it?

Help!Hi Mrs. McD and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
First of all I think you should repost this here:
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=189
That's the Intel iMac forum and you will receive a lot more pertinent information there regarding their experience with the Intel iMacs.
I set up a Mac lab last year at Baker Demonstration School in Wilmette IL. We didn't have your budget so most of our machines are G4 towers with 2 G5 towers and recently 2 iMac G5s. All were donated. So I can't address most of your high end questions. We have been creating a lot of movies mostly using Final Cut Pro and also iMovie.
As to photography I have 2 pro clients who mostly use LightRoom. I personally like Bridge and I think she also uses Photo Mechanic. She originally wanted an iMac but I talked her into a Mac Pro with 2 24" Cinema Monitors. All that extra real estate is very useful for editing photos and also for editing movies. This is pretty much the standard setup. My son edits movies with 4 30" Cinema Displays but he's also doing a lot of rendering.
I've been working with a young pro photographer here in Chicago. We've made a pole attachment for high angle shots and he was recently talking about kite photography.
Actually the IT support guy at the school is also a photographer and I've donated Macs to two photo teachers at the high school level in Chicago so I could ask them.
I agree wholeheartedly about the wireless keyboards and mice. Baker is a preK to middle school and all the keyboards and mice are wired. Less loss. We also use a lot of headphones and have dongles that the phones plug into. This saves wear and tear on the input jack which is easily damaged especially located where it is on the iMacs.

Can I revert to Lion from Mountain Lion from Time Machine?
I rushed and downloaded/installed Mountain Lion yesterday, but it's quite buggy for me. This is the first time that I upgrade and am having issues - for instance, the MacBook Pro crashes every time I close the MacBook to put it to sleep - when I open the lid, the system is crashed and needs to reboot. I don't like this at all. This, combined with a bunch of things that I used quite often (like sorting the Documents folder by date - not available anymore, the time left on battery indicator, Office for Mac is now buggy and I am having issues when I type in Outlook, etc), convinced me to try to revert to Lion.
Before upgrading I backed up to Time Machine, and haven't backed up since - which means that the newest backup on Time Machine was done on Lion. I want to restore from Time Machine to go back to Lion. Will I be able to do this, or will I run in any issues? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thank you!
CorinaI rushed and downloaded/installed Mountain Lion yesterday, but it's quite buggy for me. This is the first time that I upgrade and am having issues - for instance, the MacBook Pro crashes every time I close the MacBook to put it to sleep - when I open the lid, the system is crashed and needs to reboot. Restored from Time Machine - Now have two separate users account
Hello,
I was having problems with Leopard, so Apple support told me to do an erase and install and then restore all my data from time machine. After restoring from time machine, I was asked whether I wanted to merge my user accounts (considering that they have the same name) or create separate accounts. However, the option to merge them could not be selected. So, I created a separate account and simply kept the same name for my Time Machine account but added the #1 on the end to distinguish it.
Now I would like to merge the accounts, or delete one of the accounts while still retaining all of my data (from Time Machine). How can I go about doing this?
Thanks.Log into your restored account. Be sure it has admin authority. Delete the account you created during reinstallation.
