Installed new battery, but macbook still shuts off

So I just installed a new battery in my macbook pro after the last one  died after about 800 cycles.  Before it died I could still use it with  the AC cord plugged in, but if unplugged the computer would turn off.  After I installed the new battery i'm still having the same problems.
I don't understand what's happening because when I check the battery  status it says it's fully charged with a cycle count of 74 and the  battery condition is normal.
When the AC cord is unplugged the macbook will shut off, sometimes  when i plug it back in it will start right back where I left it prior to  unplugging it, but other times it will just do a full restart. When I  press the battery indicator (unplugged) to check the battery life  nothing happens.
I've already tried resetting the SMC, although I'm not sure if i'm  doing it right, because the light on the AC cord doesn't change when I  hold shift+ctrl+option+power. If anyone could help me out It'd be  greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

I suspect that eBay battery was very inexpensive.  There are many tales of woe on these forums of users who have purchase third party batteries for their MBPs and have found them wanting.  The vendor will tell you that the battery is a 'genuine replacement' battery, but in fact it is not.
The appropriate solution is to have a replacement battery installed by Apple which will have a warranty.
Ciao.

  • Installed Battery Updater 1.2, but MacBook still shutting down

Lately my MacBook has been shutting down with about 18% battery life left. I came onto these forums, followed the directions for removing Battery Updater 1.3, successfully installed 1.2, but it's still shutting down.
Is there anything further I can do? Is it possibly just an old battery? (I bought this computer in December '06.) If it matters, my cycle count is 335. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I was having the same problem and now it is fixed-- here's an update:
I finally had to take my macbook to the apple store. Basically, the battery died (saw the X in the battery status and it would only run plugged in). They got the battery to work again in the store by resetting the SMC (which I had tried too, but whatever) but they agreed the battery was messed up.
The weird thing is it showed my battery had like 422 charge cycles, even though I've had it like 8 months and I only run it off the battery a few times a day (and not often all the way until the battery runs out).
Anyway they replace the battery, and while I was there I showed them the stains on the top part of my case (the piece with the keyboard) and I told them about my screen sometimes flickering in terms of brightness. They said that those were known issues, and they'd fix it.
So I got it back 24 hours later, with a new battery and new keyboard piece. Cost me nothing and it works great. It is practically like a new computer and my battery lasts MUCH longer than it used to.

  • New battery but comp just shut down during use

Hi there, I have a yr-old MacBook Pro, whose battery was just replaced in-store this week...I was using it this evening and it shut off without any warning/alerts. The power adapter is plugged in properly, light is green on end connected to the MacBook but no luck when I press the power button. Not sure what issue is since battery is brand new. Help!;-)

Hi, sorry that you are having this problem. From the user guide:
If your MacBook Pro doesn’t turn on or start up
Try the following suggestions in order until your computer turns on:
Make sure the power adapter is plugged into the computer and into a functioning power outlet. Be sure to use the 85W MagSafe Power Adapter that came with your MacBook Pro. If the power adapter stops charging and you don’t see the indicator light on the MagSafe connector turn on when you plug in the power cord, try unplugging and replugging the power cord to reseat it, or try another power outlet.
Check whether the battery needs to be recharged. Press the small button on the battery. You should see one to four lights indicating the battery’s level of charge. If a single indicator light is flashing, allow the power adapter to charge the battery at least until that indicator light is glowing continuously.
If the problem persists, reset the MacBook Pro power manager by disconnecting the power adapter, removing the battery, and holding down the power (®) button for at least 5 seconds.
If you recently installed additional memory, make sure that it is correctly installed and that it is compatible with your computer. See whether removing and reinstalling the old memory allows the computer to start up (see “Installing Additional Memory” on page 35).
Press the power (®) button and immediately hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys simultaneously until you hear the startup sound a second time to reset the parameter RAM (PRAM).
When it starts up, check the crash reporter log at"
Macintosh HD > User (your name?) > Library > Logs > Crash Reporter; post back!

  • Installed New Battery in MacBook Pro--Computer Freezes Twice

Since my MacBook Pro was way past it's warranty, I decided to replace it's depleted battery myself. It wasn't rocket science and it was much cheaper than taking it into Apple and having them fix it for me as I had done so twice in the past (when I was covered under warranty). After I went through the process of removing the depleted battery and replacing it with the new one I got, I ran simple specs on my computer and the battery. The battery is certified new (arrived to me half charged on its first cycle) and matches my MackBook Pro's requirement model and my all of my computer's hardware is functioning as it should. However, since the installation of the new battery, my Mac has froze twice for no apparent reason. The first time it froze was while I was working online (Chrome) with no other applications open. The second time it froze I was running a video via my Mac's storage (file did not exceed 600MB) and nothing else. When it froze the second time, I turned off my Mac and ran the comprehensive hardware check and came up with nothing. I also checked the battery's physical appearance and there's no swelling, leaking, damages to the casing or to the connective wires that run from the battery. So my question is: Could the freezing be due to an undamaged battery that might be a low quality battery, or some other issue?
***My MacBook Pro hasn't had a freezing episode in over a year and it is always kept cool.

    **Update**
I had another freeze episode just now from picking up my computer...perhaps something is loose internally. Will be re-checking everything and posting results.

  • Warranty void as installed new HDD, but I still have the orginal?

    Hello,
I have recently installed a new 200GB Hitachi HDD 7200rpm on my laptop, I know this will void my warranty, but as I still have the original HDD safe and sound, will the warranty still stand if say... the technicians were to come round to fix my laptop because of an unrelated issue, but see that the HDD was upgraded; will they still fix the laptop anyway after I show them the original? It's a long shot I know, but the 40GB HDD that came with the laptop only leaves me little room after installing Vista.
Has my upgrade TOTALLY nullified my claims to the warranty? Even if I just say... switch back and install the original HDD in my system just before the technicians come to my house? But wouldn't that be the same as if say...I just show the technician the original HDD upon their arrival while having the upgraded HDD inside the laptop.
A bit confusing I know, but I am in a dilemma, because the Toshiba guys are set come round my place to look at my laptop under the warranty, and I'm concerned that they will not fix my laptop because I upgraded to a better and faster HD.
Thank you, I hope someone replies.

    Hi Mohin
I would try to clarify your question.
The warranty will be canceled only, if you will disassemble the notebook.
I presume the notebook was equipped with an HDD slot at the bottom of the unit and you need to remove only one screw to remove the little HDD slot cover. Am I right?
So in such case the upgrade of parts like memory or the HDD will not avoid the warranty.
But its a good idea to keep the old HDD which were delivered together with the notebook.
    Best regards

  • Macbook pro shuts off as soon as charger is disconnected. Will only charge with older square tip charger and not the newer "L" magsafe charger it originally came with.

I have a 2011 macbook pro. I recently spilled some water on top of the macbook while it was off and charging (closed). Some water got to the charging port so I immediately disconnected the charger. Right away I brought it to ibreakufix and they looked through and told me there were no issues. I plugged it back into the charger to see if it would turn on and the "L" shaped magsafe charger it came with would not light up or charge the MB and it would not turn on. At the store, the person showed that it turned on using the older square tip charger. I went to apple thinking the charger was bad but that was not the case, tried a new charger (L) and still did not work. I came home and plugged in my older macbook charger (square tip) and it worked fine as it did at the shop but as soon as I unplug the charger, the MB shuts off. I took off the bottom and switched the battery with my other macbook thinking the battery might have shorted out but it still shut off. Battery display indicates that it is charging and in fact charged up to 100% but as soon as charger is disconnected it shuts off. Oddly when I plug in the newer "L" charger and disconnect the battery from the macbook, the charger lights up and powers on the MB. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
In this situation, because of the liquid spill, it may be necessary to have your MacBook Pro evaluated for service. For more information on this process, please refer to the attached web link.

I have a late 2008 Macbook pro and just bought a new battery, but it is not holding a charge.  I read it may be the charger,
that sometimes is blank, but it does charge my computer.
    Anything I can try?
    I have updated to 10.9.2

Bring it back to the Apple store with your MBP and charger.  If the battery is found to be defective, they should provide you with a replacement (assuming you are in the warranty period).
    Ciao.

Bring it in for service.  Anytime hardware test detects an error, that's an indication the service department needs to fix it.

I do not understand what "it says in the windows connect to itunes" means?
What is "it" and what is "windows"?
    Maybe:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
    Or
    See
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    - I would start with
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
    - Then do the other actions of:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
paying special attention to item #5
    - New cable and different USB port
    - Run this and see if the results help with determine the cause

    Advice:
    1. Learn to use punctuation and sentence structure - your post makes little sense.
    2. I'm getting the idea you now want to use your old "useless" battery.  Why, if it's useless?
