Installed Safari 4 beta, now start up is stuck at blue screen with pinwheel

I reset PRAM and did fsck.
I don't have the original install disks to do any disk utility or even archive and install. Is there a way to get a copy of an install disk that will work? I was working with Tiger before, can I just go buy Leopard and do an archive and install or do I need the original one? Any help?
O yea, I can't do safe mode because I've been pressing shift when it starts and it doesn't change anything. Is there any other way to boot into safe mode, like doing it from the command line or something?

You can try the methods described in this article
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
Your profile says iMac G5, so you should be able to run Leopard. You do not have to install the original system first. An +Archive and Install+ is a good way to do the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard. However, if the volume has a disk directory (or other data corruption) error, you should resolve it before doing a major upgrade (or anything where a lot of new files are written to the volume).
If you contact Apple, you may be able to get a replacement disc for the one that came with your iMac model.
Do you have an external drive to which you can back up your current startup volume? It may have a startup problem, but it is probably still accessible, if you start up from another system on another volume.

  • G5 start up problem: stuck at grey screen with fans running full strength

hi, i'm new to discussions, so i hope this question and my technical knowledge and descriptions will be OK: problem: G5 20" stuck at grey screen with fans running full strength..
so far i've tried but did not work:
    - power off by pressing the button for 5 secs,
    - checked all cables connections etc, take out the power cable try again, etc.
    - removed all USB connections, re-did
    - tried to use it as 'target drive' connected to my macbook by firewire
    - tried to start up and keeping C key pressed
    - tried to start up with 'shift' key pressed
    - tried to start up with command, options, P and R keys pressed,
    - i had an additional RAM, i've taken it out and tried again, no luck
    - i've put in Mac OS X install disc1, no luck, and now disc is inside my iMac, can't take it out
    any recommendations? thank you!

    Scroto,
You may not actually have a bad processor. On the Dual G5's it's not uncommon after a few years for dust and corrosion to build up between the processors and their sockets. You can fairly easily remove the processors and clean the connections yourself if you're at all handy. Basically, snap off the heatsink covers, loosen a few screws and the processor and heatsink come out as a unit.
Clean the contacts on the processors (carefully). And clean the sockets. Be sure to put the same processor in the same place or you'll have issues.
I used 90% isopropol alcohol to clean mine last year. Let it air dry and blew both the socket and the cpu off after with canned air. That done, I reinstalled the processors, buckled everything up and no more "bad" processor... The machine worked perfectly from then on and I assume it still does today. Don't know, someone stole it last month:(...

  • Stuck on blue screen with clouds rainbow, floated ...

    As it says.
When I start Skype, it goes straight to a blue screen with blue clouds and a green rainbow at the bottom. I get no prompt to login. I have followed various guides, such as renaming login to login1, deleting login, restarting the computer, uninstalling then installed skype (which gets me an error code 2734 I think), uninstalled and installed Internet Explorer. I have run windows update and everything is up to date. I also followed the advise in the floated topic, and even after using Command Prompt (which was not in Accessories folder, had to search cmd to find it) and restarting, the 'click this button' does not work.
Skype was working fine on Sunday, and now it is broken. The only thing I have done in the meantime is run a repair tool for Windows Media Player as a game I installed required it to play in game music.
    EDIT: I use Windows 7.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Scripting in Internet Explorer might be disabled by an Antivirus software. What Antivirus software is installed on your computer?
Meanwhile you can try the “legacylogin” workaround, which should enable login to Skype using the old legacy login window. However, you will not be able to login using Microsoft account (email address).
Quit Skype. Make sure that you don’t see any Skype.exe processes in Windows Task Manager. If necessary, then stop these processes.
Open this folder on your computer:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\
You should see there the Skype application file (Skype.exe).  Right click on the Skype.exe file and select: Send to – Desktop (create shortcut). Right click on the newly created shortcut and select Properties and then the Shortcut tab. In the Target field you will see now:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe"
Click with your mouse on the text in the Target field and move your curser one space after the last quotation sign and add the text /legacylogin. The text in the Target field should now read:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe"  /legacylogin
Click OK to save the changes. Start Skype using this new shortcut. Can you now login to Skype?

  • MBP stuck on blue screen with spinning loading icon during update to 10.6.7

    I have a mid-2010 model Macbook Pro 13inch, 2.4ghz/4gb ram
I've been scouring apple forums and even reddit and my googlefu has yielded no such luck. Basically, System Update has been yelling at me for a few weeks now to upgrade to 10.6.7 (among other updates) and I've been putting it off and putting it off, with the intention of eventually doing the update, but I just kept forgetting.
Finally tonight, I remembered, and decided to open System Update, and do all the recommended updates that it was asking me to do. So, without thinking twice (I've never had an issue with this before) I clicked download and install, and away it went, downloading like usual and then rebooting.
Thing is, it's been stuck at this blue screen with the spinning spiral coming up on 5 hours now. I know the 10.6.7 update was close to 400mb, but I've never had anything like this happen before.
My hard drive had more than 150 gigs free on it last time I checked, and it's been running absolutely flawless up until now.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it supposed to take so long? What do I do?
I've been contemplating shutting it down by holding the power button, but since it's a OS update I'm afraid the drive will be corrupted, and unfortunately I don't have a current backup of the drive either... Help

I left my macbook plugged in over night, we're now going on 14 hours of this blue screen with the spinning wheel/symbol. Anyone?

  • Powerbook won't boot - stuck on blue Screen with rolling pin wheel

Hi, maybe someone could remove my current headache.
My old Powerbook G4 is stucked on a blue screen with an infinite rolling pin wheel(just after the little mouse arrow appears and disappears).
    For the information:
    - I already did all the possibilities on this page without success:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1411?viewlocale=en_US#symp1
    - When I do Fsck in single user mode, it tells me that everything is fine with the HD
    - I also checked techtool pro v4: everything is fine with the hard drive and files
    - I can't start in safe mode
    - I can't put my computer in Firewire target disk mode - the Fireware icon screen appears but it doesn't mount on my apple dekstop.
    - I don't know where is my old PB G4 install disk, so I can't try that.

I don't know where is my old PB G4 install disk, so I can't try that.
And, there in lies the solution. Without an OS disc to repair the OS you are up the creek without an OS disc.

  • Slow start up sometimes stuck on blue screen

since i got the problem with bootcamp which i cant use it anymore for some reason my imac start up or bootup become so slow sometimes i got stuck to the blue screen i did the hardware test and it says fine no problem at all do u think is it a software problem do i need to a clean install for my mac os x ?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Old iMac won't start up and stuck in grey screen with spinning wheel

Hi, I have a very old imac which I purchased back in 2005, and has been working fine. I have left it in storage about 1 and 1/2 years ago.
Just now I try to restart it, the screen is forever stuck in the grey screen with the spinning wheel.
I tried many times off-on, hold down the apple function key but none worked.
I no longer have the rebooting CD with me. I wonder whether the computer can still be saved?
I have already backed up the contents so it doesn't matter if fixing the computer requires me to delete all my old files.
    Thanks
If I am not wrong, I think it's tiger or earlier that it's using.

Do you have the Install Disc to try to boot from?
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

  • G4 start up problem, stuck in blue screen

Hello all. So, after mistakenly unplugging the G4 it will no longer boot. I get the gray screen, which then goes to the blue screen where it stays. The mouse pointer will appear, then periodically disappear while a status icon flashes in the lower center of the screen.
I've already tried resetting the PMU. When I attempt to use safe boot i get to the login screen. I enter my login/pass, which brings up a black prompt screen asking for login/pass again. I can login, but what if anything am I supposed to do at this point?
I thought safe boot just launched OSX without some features enabled?
Any suggestions. Tonight I'm going to try to use my laptop to open the G4 in target mode.
    Thanks,
    D

You could try the following. From the hatter. It was for a abit different problems, but may work.
Unplug the machine, pull the clock battery, hit the power button to discharge. Then plug it in without the clock battery. The machine should boot perfectly. Shut down, reinstall the clock battery, and now the system is fully functional. From Macosxhints.
To help you understand Safe Mode check the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392
Also when you login with Safe Mode, go into system preferences/accounts/Login items, and remove any that are there.
Then restart without holding any keys.
The problems could be a third party application at login that would allow the boot.
If the problems continues, and there are any files she needs, I would start again in Target mode, pull the files. Than do a complete reinstall, with a zeroing of the hard drive which will take a while depending on its size.

  • TS3694 How do I resolve error 1015?  I was syncing my phone to the computer and got this error about iTunes.  Now my phone is stuck on a screen with iTunes word and the USB symbol.

How do I resolve error 1015 when syncing my phone to Mac?  Now the phone is stuck on iTunes icon and USB drive icon and not letting me get calls or make calls.  Please help.

Wow I see from the other responses to similar questions that the phone may be jailbroken.  I thought I was purchasing an unlocked phone that was legal to use with any system.  What a disappointment, I will have to go back to where I purchased this phone and let them have an ear full.

  • New ipod touch is stuck on blue screen with aple logo

I plugged in my new apple ipod touch to my computer and on my itune screen a box popped up and said, "new update available for ipod touch" so i clicked accept and then it said that it was updating and everything and the screen of my ipod turned a blue/black color and had the Apple logo on it. Then a bar came up right underneath the Apple logo and it started to fill in, but it was filling in very slow. I thought that the update came up because i had just downloaded some things from the apps store to my itunes on my computer, so i thought it was putting it on my touch. It has been stuck on the blue/black screen with the Apple logo and completely filled bar for a long time and it has not changed once.
