Installing Box Set SL on new iMac - cannot boot from DVD...

Hi MacHive
I downloaded Lion today but wanted to install SL on a external USB-Partition because there are 2 PPC games I still like to play every now and then (Homeworld 2 and Alpha Centauri). Then I can boot into SL on my external drive and play the games from there, and having Lion and everything else on the internal HD.
So I started the install (after Disk Utility successfully verified the target disk), it succeeded into copying all the required .pkg into place and at the end of the installer log there are the following messages:

At that time, it should restart with the DVD and finish the installation. However, I get the BONG! (good)  and the grey apple  (good), but then it stops (I never get to the grey moving circle  ;-) and soon after, the DVD stops spinning in the drive and nothing progresses anymore.
Retrying to restart normally: same effect. Restarting with "c" key: same effect, restarting with "alt" key - I get my internal HDs and the DVD to choose (but obviously not my target disk), but choosing the DVD results, once more, in the same effect.
The disc has no scratches and I used this disc to install SL successfully some time ago.
Do you know how I can bring SL to the external HD? Is this iMac "too new" to be restarted with the Box Set Mac OS X  (supposedly, this is 10.6.0 or so... don't know).
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!
Kind regards,
Fabio
PS: I'm running the following (a 2011 i3 iMac):
Jul 30 23:30:14 blop-imac Install Mac OS X[301]: Hardware: iMac11,2 @ 3.20 GHz (x 4), 4096 MB RAM
Jul 30 23:30:14 blop-imac Install Mac OS X[301]: Running OS Build: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)

Thanks Linc....   In an embarassing lack of concentration I didn't think that I should use the iMac's original disks (10.6.4) and not the box set one (10.6.0 or so). This solved the issue and I could install SL without further troubles. TY again.

  • Setting up a new iMac with backup from Macbook Pro -- is it possible?

I am retiring my old Macbook Pro, and would like to change over to an iMac or Mac Pro since I am tired of hauling my work back and forth every day. I have my Macbook backed up using Time Machine -- can I use that backup to set up a new iMac?

I would strongly recommend reading the late great Pondini's article on Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant:

  • Portege Z830 - cannot boot from DVD

I have a Portege Z830-11F. I upgraded my machine to Windows 8 and but i didnt like it. So i decided to make a clean setup of Windows 7.
I downloaded the .iso file from internet and burned it to a DVD.
I plugged in my external DVD player, restarted, entered BIOS and changed the boot order and restarted again.
All went well and i was able to install Windows 7.
But i didn't had the drivers, (thought the OS would recognize the LAN driver at least, i was mistaken)
So i upgraded to Windows 8 again (without restarting) just to download the drivers for Windows 7.
I did so, but now i cannot boot from the DVD.
When i enter the boot order section, sometimes the DVD is listed, sometimes not.
In both cases the machine boots to Windows 8 straightly, does not allow me to boot from the DVD.
The strange thing is i was able to boot from the same DVD in the first place.
What can i do to boot from the DVD?

At first I must say that I dont understand why you didnt create recovery media before you have changed anything. Using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator you could create recovery USB and the whole situation would be not so complicated. This recovery image is activated but now if you install own OS version you will not be able to use product key that you got with your notebook.
Anyway, now perform complete Win8 shutdown and after doing this start notebook and use F12 to enter boot menu. Of course your external DVD must be connected before you start your notebook. it can be that external drive will be listed on USB boot option like on my U940.

  • Cannot boot from DVD since 10.4.6 update.

My Quad cannot boot from the Superdrive at all.Upon updating I decided to repair permissions from the DVD but everytime I got to the Apple logo the fans powered up,full tilt. I had to turn the Quad off from the power button and start up holding down the mouse, in order to eject the DVD.
As far as I remember, I allowed the computer to start up twice, and disconnected all peripherals whilst updating.
I've tried zapping the pram and resetting the nvram to no avail.I've inserted Disk Warrior and that will not boot. The computer runs fine from the HD (although there was one occasion when, briefly, a small OS9-style Mac monitor appeared with a question mark, then made way for a proper boot), but I'm really concerned at this problem. I do not want to wipe the system drive and start from scratch, since I've only just finished migrating a whole buch of software from another G5, and I have TV job looming.
Incidentally, both my other G5's and Mac Mini updated with no perceptable problems. Can anyone shed any light on this and, perhaps, offer a solution (other than a wipe ! ).
    Thank you.

Any installation can theoretically cause harm. If you aren't backed up, you may be forced to use Target Disk Mode if you can't boot a DVD, or an external DVD burner that supports booting. Both LaCie and Otherworld Computing have external Firewire DVD drives that support booting. Target Disk Mode is described here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Fortunately when you boot via Firewire or use Target Disk Mode, you bypass the hard drive's bootloading software, which you don't when you use the internal optical drive.

  • 2011 27" iMac cannot boot from a slow leopard install DVD

I just got a new iMac 27". It came with Lion preinstalled. I wanted to install Snow Leopard on the 2nd hard drive and it wont let me boot from the DVD or run the Snow Leopard install from the DVD when running under lion. When I try to boot from the DVD I get a kernel panic. I am also having problems with computer not waking from sleep. I think I should return this computer as defective. Anyone else have this kernel panic problem?

As stated, you can't use SL on the Mac, so the kernel panics should subside if you're not trying to boot from SL. However, there are plenty of other posts re. freezing/not waking after sleep.
So, if you do want to run SL, you could try to find one that still has SL installed (and you'd get the free upgrade to Lion) - there are quite a few refurbished units at the Apple Store. If you're within the 14 days and purchased it at an Apple store, you can return it and could order a refurb with SL (or find a new one at a reseller who bought up the left over stock). That's what I've usually done.

  • Cannot Boot From DVD or CD to install tiger

I have both the dvd version of tiger and the cd version....neither will boot. I tried booting the dvd from the firewire external dvd drive and the cd from the internal cdrom but with no luck. I have tried holding "c" on boot as well as the option key, and setting the device boot volume from control panel to the cd/dvd all with no luck.
I have a g3 ibook with 256megs of ram and cdrom drive.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks!
    ~Todd

    Hi Todd,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Your iBook does support Tiger and you also meet the other minimum system requirements (although 256 MB is the absolute bare minimum).
How did you get both the DVD and CD-version? Using Apple's Media Exchange program requires you to send back the DVD and get CDs instead. Make sure you use original Apple retail full install disks!
You also might want to run the hardware tests that originally shipped with your iBook.

  • Pioneer 111D cannot boot from DVD

I installed the the dvd burner, works fine but will not boot from tiger disk which is the reason I upgraded it in the first place. my machine is a 466 G4 which only had a CD/RW before. it is installed as master with a zip 250 as slave on that buss. I have not tried the patchburn solution yet...

Patchburn is for burning, it will not affect booting. When you are booting from an optical disk, nothing is read from the hard drive, so any software installed there has no effect.
What Tiger disk are you using? A disk from another computer will not work.

  • Imac wont boot from DVD

just got my imac back after hard drive replacement, but it will not boot from the dvd? and now I can't get the dvd out?

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.
As for the stuck disc, this is the simplest, from LousyFool's link, if restarting, holding down the mouse doesn't do the tridk.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray. If you have an external drive, e.g. the MacBook Air Superdrive, use "drutil eject external".

  • I had to erase and reinstall mavericks to hd, now i cannot boot up , i get a folder with flashing Q mark and i cannot boot from dvd drive...Ideas please

    hi
its a long and sorry story, i have a imac running mavericks
a few days ago i noticed that the dvd drive was ejecting every disc i put in, so i decide to check hd with onyx and reset permissions etc
onyx said the smart status couldnt be checked and i should check hd using disk utility.
i did this and it came up that hd had errors , so i ran the repair facility....it came up with disk can not be repaired, reformat and reinstall mavericks
    this i did.
i  reinstalled mavericks into mac hd, which took about 3 hrs, i then rebooted and a folder with flashing Qmark appeared, i cant get past this at all.
i have tried to use internet recovery but it comes up with 6002f error, and the dvd drive still does not accept boot disk, so i am at a lose as to how to proceed
    anybody got any ideas?
    thanks
    L

If your hard drive has SMART errors then it is failing and should be replaced. Disk Utility cannot fix SMART reported errors.

  • Cannot boot from dvd

    Hi,
I have sun blade 1000 with Solaris 9 running on it. I am trying to install solaris 10 on it using a dvd. At the ok prompt
    boot cdrom command gives me
    Bad disk label
    Bad magic number.
However I can see the contents of the dvd when I boot the machine from the disk with solaris 9 on it.
    I would appreciate any help.

    Hi,
Just check, if DVD-ROM and DVD are working fine. Next step is to check firmware of DVD drive. It should be latest one.

  • Cannot boot from DVDs; G5 defaults to external FW  boot drive w/10.3.x

Hi all. This is bad and old, and full of lessons about backing up. Anyway, internal boot drive crashed a week ago, and internal optical drive is busted. New external LaCie dvd burner works fine, but all attempts to start up from Tiger, Leopard and Diskwarrior installation disks just end up back in OS10.3 on my external LaCie FW drive. I've tried many things: unplugged everything; switched external LaCie to USB (wouldn't boot), unplugged power from internal optical drive so Mac wouldn't look there first (somebody suggested that). Attempts to start up installers from mounted DVDs result in installer screen with restart button, which, when clicked on, results in... you guessed it... boot back to dreaded 10.3 system.
Night owls and westcoasters, I am up for hours yet, pulling hair. Thanks for any assistance.

Holy, holy cow! You saved me, Tom! I wonder if you will take a moment to explain briefly why FW makes a difference in this case. Is it common knowledge among alert people? Also, if I thought to move the external drive to USB, wonder why it didn't occur to me to move the burner to FW? Too old, perhaps. Anyway, I hope you move back on to the Top Users list soon, and that you get more than the meager points you earn from solving my problem. Thanks very much.

  • Qosmio F30-140 - Cannot boot from DVD Drive

    Dears,
I faced problem in DVD drive, I can't boot from it... actually, it didn't see and CD or DVD when I insert it...
So how can boot from it to reinstall windows?????? Or how can I use external USB DVD to boot from it???
I have F30-140, with updated BIOS...
    please neeeeeeed help..

    Hi
Sounds like CD/DVD drive has developed a hardware problem.
Usually you should be able to boor from ODD by pressing C button immediately after the notebook was powered up.
You can also press F12 at the beginning. This would enable the boot menu on the screen.
There you can choose ODD as boot source
If this will not function, then the ODD could be defect.
PS: I doubt the BIOS supports booting from USB CD/DVD drive...

  • Cannot boot from USB-DVD on HP Envy 13

Even when the USB DVD drive is selected as the primary boot device or selected as boot device after pressing ESC and F9, I cannot boot from DVD.
According to another post I have:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-e-g-Windows-8-and-Software/Boot-problem-but-...
I have problems booting from HDD as well, and now I also have problems booting from DVD. I have tried 3 different bootable DVDs.
Does anyone have any ideas to how the booting process could be corrupted any further and how I can regain the boot-from-DVD function? Now I cannot even run the recover DVD and recover the PCs factory settings.
However, I can still boot from HDD following the description from the other posting.
    Thanks with best regards

Could you please give me the exact product number for your notebook?

  • Set up of new iMac - need to sync existing iPhone & iPad but cannot

I have set up a new iMac and cannot get any of my itunes backups to sync my iphone and ipad to the new mac. My iphone & ipad were all synced to my old windows laptop via itunes and everything synchronized - mail, calendar, music etc. Now I am setting up a new iMac and I signed up the itunes via iCloud. This has only set up anything purchased through itunes and about 90% of my music was not purchased through itunes so most of it is missing. So I have spoken to apple support on the phone and they guided me to transfer my old windows media to the new iMac using migration assistant. Unfortunately this wouldn't connect, so I am back to square one.
So now I have manually moved all of my photos and music manually using an external hard drive - so that has taken over the largest amount of files to the new iMac but my issue still remains that nothing will sync to the new iMac. I am totally lost now and have no idea how to approach it.
I tried to back up the iPad and iPhone to iCloud but even that won't happen - so basically everything is still syncing to my old windows laptop and nothing is syncing to my new iMac.
Does anyone have any suggestions how to approach and where to start. I am based in Dubai and there is no apple store here so I can't even take it all in and just get it all sorted and I am not getting much help on the phone as the tech support is 9-5pm work days only and I am at work and not in front of the iMac to try any troubleshooting.
    Any suggestions are WELCOME!
    thanks,

sign out of the itunes on the PC and then sign into the itunes on the ipad iphone and imac w/ the same apple id make sure that all 3 devices are authorized to the same apple id and then you should be able to start syncing the phone and pad to the imac.
