Installing new programs

Hello,
Have tried to install new programs onto Leopard, but the computer does not seem to want me to do this. When I insert and dmg. file or the CD containing the program...the computer reads it, allows me to drag to applications, or to open the VICE file for installing, but then it does nothing...absolutely nothing. I tried this with OFFICE 2004 and MAc-Link and Appleworks (which I am slowly replacing anyway, but there are some wonderful things there still for me).
Why won't the computer allow me to install these workable programs...some seem to work well on my PowerBook, but not on this desktop G5.
Go raibh maith agat
Tom

Thank you Jeffrey Jones, you just saved me $89 as I was considering buying iWork.
I don't know why I thought Appleworks wouldn't run on Leopard, perhaps because of its pre Aqua theme.
I was surprised it even ran on OS X, though of course it did come bundled with OS X.
It always looks a bit of a black sheep, more at home on OS 8 than OS X. And so, from its deceptive appearance I thought that an Intel computer would surely pass it by, but no.
Consistent with its black sheepiness, it is the sole PowerPC app, showing in Activity monitor.

dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk, what can I do?

Well I was able to obtain a work around download of Flash and it installed fine but Firefox tells me it needs updating so I go out, thinking I'm "IN" finally to update it and I get that issue of not being able to get the update for it.  It's a regular laptop, not a touch screen or one of those new fangled ones for todays world.  In fact it's a refurb so it's probably origin date was a year or so ago before all this MS stuff took off fully.  So not understanding why I'm feeling like I'm being BLOCKED from getting the updated Flash I need and desire.  If I click on the little "X" and tell it to ignore the warning the vid will play just fine but don't want to have to do that every time.  Must be a better way.
Again, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum, getting this posted in the Flash forum was my desire but the way Adobe has this set up I just couldn't figure it out.  I belong to ALLOT of forums and most are pretty straight forward but this one is confusing!

  • My Mac won't open certain files anymore so I can't install new programs.

I accidentally reset the default application used to open new programs that I try to install and now it won't open. It's set accidentally to use ScriptEditor. I'm not sure what "program" was used originally to open them, so I don't know what to reset it to. How do I fix it so I can install new programs again?

You cannot install Norton Antivirus on this volume. This software must be installed on a volume containing Mac OS X version 10.4.10 or later.
HOW CAN I RESOLVE THIS. Even if I go onto the internet to update my software it does not allow me to.
Your urgent assistance is desperately needed. HELP :o)

Verify the version of Norton Anti-virus you have is 10.5.4 compatible.
Make sure your hard drive is less than 85% full (an arbitrary number which appears to create problems for Mac OS X)*:

Note running Norton Anti-virus on the Mac is normally something that's only needed to prevent you from becoming Typhoid Mary, more than prevent you from getting a Mac OS X virus, as there are none in the wild. There are some proof of concept trojan horses, but that's about it.

    Hi,
Can any one tell me how can I install new programs remotely using an existing MIDlet on a mobile device.
My existing MIDLet is setting on the cell phone and will accept my incomming connections and will download the new software in the memory. I now need that software to get installed on the cell phone.
    How do I do that.
IIs there any defined way of installing packages.
Is there something like Runtime.execute() method.
    Waiting for response

This issue may be due to a missing symbolic link; to replace the link under 10.3 and newer, open the Disk Utility in your /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the Repair Permissions command.

  • Problems with installing new programs

    Dear all,
since the update to OS X Yosemite, I have some problems with installing new programs.
I tried to install the Fitbit App to connect my Fitbit to my Mac but the program can't be started after installation. I have the same problem with Blackberry Blend, too. I am able to install it but it doesn't start running.
Does anybody have an idea what's the problem?
    Thank You,
    Lisa.

Did you receive any errors during the installation itself or does this happen when you try to open Photoshop?

You need the admin password you created when you first set up the machine.  Just about every installer running under OS X will require you to authorize the installation by entering an administrator password - even software update requires this.  You really should not forget your admin password, as it is required for many things in OS X since, unlike Windows, you often need to manually type in the admin password to proceed with an install or update (whereas Windows will take admin authority, if you are logged in as an admin, by simply clicking continue or yes).
If you cannot remember your admin password, you can reset it from the recovery CD that came with your mac - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274

    Hi Again Konstantin!
Run Repair Disk, and Repair Permissions. Instructions below.
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert your Mac OS X CD-ROM disc or Restore DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
8.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
9.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
10.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP until the only messages it reports, are listed in this article.
    Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".
    Good Luck!

  • Airport drive not showing up as one of the options when installing new programs

I purchased a large 120GB soundbank (Komplete 9 from Native Instruments) and need to install it to my MacBook Air which does not have enough space on the internal drive.
I have a 2TB Airport capsule and thought I would be able to install the program on there but it does not show up as an available option when I try to install the program (see screenshot). Do I need to buy an external drive that plugs in via USB instead? I'm hoping I don't need a MacBook Pro instead...
    Thanks a lot.

Programs usually aren't the biggest culprits in terms of space usage, it's normally data files that take up more space. This kind of huge library really is best installed on an external drive, provided you don't mind carrying it around with you. Here's how you install it on an external:

  • I forgot the password to install new program

On my MacBook (late 13inch - late 2007) we had an automatic log-in and forgot the password in the meantime.  The computer has been re-set once after a a software repair and the password was probably a default password- not one of our own passwords. We accidentally took away the automatic log-in and now we can't access our computer anymore.
How can we access the computer now?  Even if we have to reset everything, that's okay.  We only use this old laptop for internet access.  Pls help.

  • Does Firefox have a run option to download and install a new Program?

Can I install new program from the Internet onto my PC without having to down load it first to my hard drive and the running the install program? With IE I can just choose run to install a download without having to save it first to my PC like with Firefox.

opendownload does not work with 4.0.1.
do any other add-ons exist that do?

  • New programs install as drives?

I don't really understand what's going on and I am having trouble finding information about it. First of all I will say I am about a month old mac user. There have been a few programs now that I have installed (ie google earth) and have shown up as drives, under "devices". So I have to "eject" them every time I close the program. I can't drag them into my application folder, they only appear as devices, and on my dock, it does let me drag it there but then shows up as a device too every time I click it. And I always get a .dmg file along with whatever I am downloading...do I need to keep that or just for the install?
Anyway is there anywhere I can find out, or can anyone explain to me the processes involved with downloading and installing new programs because I am pretty confused about it at this point. thanks!

When you download something using Mac, it usually comes with a (.dmg ), most of the time it would open by it self and install the application inside it, sometime you would need to open it by hand. a lot of times when you open the (.dmg) file, it comes up with a ~drive~, what you do is open it, and you will find the application inside, just drag the application to the ~>Finder>Applications~, after it's done, just Eject the drive, and if there is a ~.dmg~ file comes with the download, delete it too. And that's all you need to do, the software you downloaded would be in the Application Finder, drag it to the dock if you want to open it fast every time.
