Installing some packages

Hi guys i'm a new user, i've installed some packages dowloaded from sunfreeware and sun.com with the command pkgadd -d "name" .
more packages such as gcc make and some library but when i'm send the command "gcc".."make" etc... from terminal it sends "command not found".
i've search this problem in some forum and maybe i've find a solution, "a symbolic link".
example "ln -s /opt/sfw/bin/gcc /usr/ucb/gcc"
with this method the gcc command work.
my question is, every time that i make an installation with pkgadd -d i must search the executable file in /opt/sfw/bin/ and after create a symbolic link in /usr/ucb/?
there is an easy way?

You can use ".profile" file, to have PATH env variable. Create ".profile" file, in the home directory of the user (if it doesn't exist).
syntax: export PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/opt/sfw/bin:/usr/local/bin/:<other_paths>
therefore every time that i'm installing a new software i must add its path in $PATH variable?Yes
how can i recognize the executable file that have i to insert? Most of the executables reside under "bin" directory, under the installation directory. When you install new software, usually the installers print verbose output on console about the status of the installation. From that verbose output, note down the absolute path to the "bin" directory, and add it to the PATH variable in ~/.profile file.

    Hello Guys,
Could you suggest me how can I install and update from time to time only several packages from testing but not all of that repository?

Or should we, from now on, consider our fellow users as all dumb in opposition to competent linux users [1] as it has always been ?

This is not a private club, things posted here are read by many competent Arch users and some incompetent as well. Results show up in a Google search. The same thing happened when trying to install gnome and a few other programs. What's happening here, and how do I fix it?

Have you done a system update lately (pacman -Syu). If so it looks like the mirror you are using is out of date.  What version of gcc do you have?
The gcc package split into gcc-libs and gcc.  You are only getting the update of gcc-libs and thus the resulting file conflicts with the old gcc package.

  • Why pacman do not prompt I have installed that package???

I found that pacman do not prompt installed packages. It leads to reinstalling packages.
    It's a bad situation...

The times I miss "--needed" as default option, is when I install groups where I already have installed some packages of this group. Every time I see myself starting pacman twice. First without and then with "--needed".
I mean whenever I explicit say "pacman install foo" and I already have foo, I expect pacman to just install foo, as I know what I'm doing. Or maybe it should say "You already have foo, do you really want (Y/N)?". But when I install a group and there are single packages already installed, then I want pacman to just install the rest of the group, not the packages that I already have.
I see that this is a break in consistency, but maybe its more that what the user wants. At least its more what I want
Maybe it could just be solved with the silly question "foo, bar and something other are already installed, do you want do install them again (Y/N)?"

  • Installing other packages may have broken Oracle InstantClient

    Hi Folks,
I had the oracle instant client installed and working okay and also the oci8 php module. It looks like it's stopped working, though, and I'm not sure how to troubleshoot it. The symptoms are that my php page just hangs and doesn't produce any output, and from the commandline sqlplus just hangs, leaving no output.
I have it installed on another machine (a test machine, slightly different specs), and it's still working fine, so I think it must be something that's changed on the server. The only thing I can think of is that I've installed some packages recently (mod_python, postgresql), but I don't see how that would have made a difference, or how I can troubleshoot. Is there a debug mode for sqlplus??
    Thanks, Tom

I've reinstalled the new 20060331 version and things seem to be okay.
    Thanks, Tom

  • Quick Q: Installing all packages?

Quick question really.  For the main installation, do you guys install all base/lib/support and extra or just the base and a few other selected ones and does installing them all make any real world difference?

I only install base, no special reason actually. If your internet is slow, it'll be quicker to install some packages you need from the CD, afaik that's the only difference.

    Hello!
When installing some packages, one of them gdm (pacman -S gdm) I get the message

This line is showing that your Auto-Anchor (mobility) is not completing:
Tue Jul 10 13:43:21 2012: 74:e1:b6:e5:68:5f DHCP dropping packet due to ongoing mobility handshake exchange, (siaddr 0.0.0.0, mobility state = 'apfMsMmAnchorExportRequested'
This would imply that for some reason your mobility handoff is either being rejected by your anchor or isnt making it through the network. My suggestion would be to run the same debug on both the foreign and any potential anchors without changing ssids to see what it shows..
In addition to the client debug, a "debug mobility handoff enable"  might show a reason of the handoff being rejected. But I'd wait to see the basic client debug on all wLCs first.
Are you anchoring to multiple WLCs?

  • How to install/add packages to org.apache

    hi everyone!
i'm pretty new with Java and i wanted to know how to install a package i downloaded from "http://www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/". the package name is poi and i have no clue how to do it so i'll be able to import some classes from it in my code... (i tried to just paste it the file src.zip at the location org/apache but it didn't worked)
    thanks for you help,
    shimon ;)

"install" isn't really the right word. You'll have to learn to think differently about JARs in Java. because you don't "install" them and your apps don't get access to them via the operating system. They're more like dynamic link libraries or DLLs in Windows parlance.
What you should do is figure out what a standard directory structure for all your applications will be, maybe something like this:
    application
    +
+------source (put your .java source files in their package structure under here)
+------lib (put your 3rd party JAF files under here)
+------classes (compile your .class files to this directory)
So in this case you'd put the POI JAR under /lib for your project. Tell Eclipse that /source is where it should expect to find all the .java file, that /class is the output directory for all compilations. Right click on the project folder, select "Properties", and add all the JARs to the build class path. Then you'll be all set with Eclipse.
Tell Eclipse that application is the root of your project. Tell

  • Installing repository packages offline

I am working on a Solaris 10 system not connected to Internet. Is there any means to download packages along with their dependencies to some other system connected to Internet and then install downloaded packages offline?

Alan explained that Solaris 10 doesn't use a pkg repository but you can create a pkg server
to serve pkgs or a JumpStart server to install systems.
I never download images because we have internal pkg servers so I don't do these steps,
but they should give you some ideas, The biggest factor is the system that is connected to
the Internet. Does it have a DVD burner? Is it a UNIX system? I hope so.
    1. Download the sol-10-u10-ga2-sparc-dvd.iso image and either burn it to a DVD or save
    it as a file.
    2. You can make the DVD contents available over NFS or you can lofi mount the ISO file
and make it available over NFS.
    3. When the pkg location is available over NFS, then you can point the pkg add command
    to that path, like this:
    # pkgadd -d /net/cyberman/export/s10u10/combined.s10s_u10wos/17b/Solaris_10/Product SUNWman
    Thanks, Cindy

  • Install a package from Solaris 10 cd

    Hello,
I accidentaly removed a package (namely SUNWgcc) from the system. I have the Solaris 10 CDs. Is it possible to install this package for the CD? I check the CD and it looks like SUNWgcc on it is not a package that I can install with pkgadd -d.
    Thank You,
    PN.

This does not seem to work from the Solaris 10 CD 1 -
the CD directory structure is different.
Specifically I am trying to install SUNWmfrun which
is in the /cdrom/tmp/root/var/sadm/pkg directory.Don't go there.
Stay in the Product directories on the CDs. You'll find the package there.
However this directory doesn't have a pkgmap file in
it so running the pkgadd command fails. No, that's not a package. /var/sadm/pkg contains information about the package database, so some of the files and directories there have the same name as packages (but they're not packages).
    Further investigation shows another directory,
    /cdrom/tmp/root/var/sadm/pkg/SUNWmfrun/save/pspool/SUN
Wmfrun which does have that file, but running pkgadd
against that directory fails completely.Still not a package.
How can I use pkgadd to add packages from the first
CD in the Solaris 10 installation? The packages are in the 'Product' directory.
Your paths seem odd. You have a normally booted host and you're just inserting the CD? What are the contents of /cdrom?

You are mixing redhat provided packages with OEL. Generally, it's not a good idea to mix packages of different distributions.
The media you've used to install OEL contains these packages. Use these.

  • Xvidcore, fbpanel - had a try on ABS: made some packages

Since I'm getting really comfortable about this distro, I decided to try the ABS way of compiling. To my surprise this was  quite an easy thing to do. After a few tries I managed to create some packages, which I miss or aren't up-to-date in the arch linux database.
    I made packages for
    - xvid-1.0.1 (MPEG4 codec with better compression than divx)
    - fbpanel (windows-like lightweight panel)
    - libdts (decode dts-streams from dvd)
    - leafpad (gtk notepad clone, lean and mean)
    - guiTAR (gtk gui archive program)
Only fbpanel was a bit tricky: had to edit the Makefiles myself, for neither prefix and DESTDIR worked. Anyway I thought that maybe someone finds those usefull. <edit> This is fixed now see further down the page</edit>

Yes, but it's still using a release candidate. While this one is stable version 1.0.1 already.
Also, what changes did you need to do to the makefile? Could you either include them in the PKGBUILD or perhaps an install file?
As I said in the original post. Change the lines from all three Makefiles at the sections install to the prefix you'd like to use. In my case this was something like /var/abs/local/fbpanel/pkg/usr .
I'm quite new to all this, but I'll look into this install file thing.
<edit>I have looked at the .install possibilities, but as far as I can see, there isn't a way to modify the source before compiling. Only after compiling. Correct me if I'm wrong.</edit>
You could use some sed scripting, I had to do that for a program I was trying to get to compile, check out the PKGBUILD at: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … highlight=
All I was doing is inserting a "0;" after a certain line in one of the source files.
