Installing XFree86 4.1.0

I've tried to install XFree86 4.1.0 to have my geforce256 working properly. I've passed all the steps listed in the SolarisX86-FAQ (How do you install XFree86?). The test of the X-Server shows the normal X-startup background, mouse moves - seems to work. After I've set the link in /etc/dt/config/XServers to /usr/X11R6/bin/X (as explained in the FAQ) and a reboot, solaris couldn't boot into dtlogin (unable to run x-server on ...)
Has anyone else experienced the same problem? Does anyone know about other step-by-step installation guides for XFree86 (especially for Version 4.1.0 on Solaris 8)?
Thanks, Andreas

I have xfree86 4.1 running on my Intel box. I don't know all the steps you did but isn't there a file that needs to be copied from "/usr/dt/XXX/xservers" to "/etc/dt/XXX/xservers. After the copy you need to edit it and tell it to use the xfree version of the xserver.
Hope this helps.

  • Installing S3trio64

does anyone have any advice on installing an S3trio64v on solaris 2.6? I chose that card and the monitor and no matter what I cannot get the video to work. I also have had the same problem with an ATI Rage IIC.

Check out www.xfree86.org and install the Solaris version of Xfree on your system. Read the Solaris x86 FAQ , it has some extra information on installing Xfree86 on Solaris.

  • Getting XFREE86 4.3.0

What is the PKGBUILD for XFree86 4.3.0?  Radeon will not work with the new version yet.  Anyone have a PKGBUILD or a pkg.tar.gz?

You want to know what I did?  Here's a mini HOWTO.
    Getting XFree 4.3.0
    1)  First, download the XFree86 4.3.0 package from
    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/current/xfree86 … pkg.tar.gz.
    2)  Remove the XFree86 4.4.0 package with:
    pacman -Rd xfree86
    3)  Install XFree86 4.3.0 using this command:
    pacman -A /path/to/downloades/files/xfree86-4.3.0-7.pkg.tar.gz
    4)  To prevent pacman upgrades from upgrading XFree, add this to the [Options] section of your /etc/pacman.conf
    IgnorePkg = xfree86
There you go!!  You're good to go until ATI releases new 4.4.0 drivers, then you can remove the addition to your pacman.conf, pacman -Syu, and live happily ever after

  • X11 on macbook pro does not open an xterm

I recently installed X11 on my new core 2 duo macbook pro from the DVD that came with it. When I start it and select Applications -> Terminal, nothing happens. I downloaded the X11 1.1.2 update from support.apple.com and this does not seem to fix it either.
Anyone else see this or have any ideas?

Hi Tim. I'm aware of the distinction between Terminal and X11. I compiled gobby using MacPorts and realized I hadn't installed X11 yet. It turns out MacPorts installed XFree86 due to some dependency, my guess is there's a conflict between that and X11.
I haven't had time to dig further into the old DarwinPorts mailing list archives, I imagine the answer is in there. Thanks for your help.

This is not really a Swing question. You should install the library which satisfies the lookup of libXp.so.6 .
I quess the jre for this platform is compiled against this version. Looks to me like some X related library, maybe google can resolve a solution/package to install?

Well, anything with "Demo" or "Source" in the title you can delete usually without any problems.
It looks like everything in your list is X11 related. Its really a question for you. If you plan to perform TOTAL CLI type administration on this machine, you can delete the X11 stuff completely. This of course assumes there in nothing in the SunONE application software suite which doesn't require X11 capabilities for configuration. I've never used the SunONE app server but I SERIOUSLY doubt it does. More then likely its administration is browser based.
BUT, if you want to perform some limited X11 display back stuff from time to time, you're going to need the X11 stuff.

  • Solaris 8 on IBM Thinkpad T20 - Display Problem!

    Hi Forum,
I have Solaris 8 07/01 installed on this IBM Tninkpad T20. The problem has been the display. It has S3 Savage IX 8. I need help to resolve this issue. Here's what I have done.
After installation of OS, latest patches were applied. Installed XFree86 without any problems. Configured and generated a /XF86Config.new file from /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 -configure. The XF86Config.new was copied as /XFConfig and /etc/X11/XFConfig. This file looks good detecting the Savage driver with this sentence in it: "Savage(0): VESA VBE DDC Support". I understand that this adapter has been picked up with correct configuration.
When I run XFree86, it just displays a grey screen with the mouse cursor in the middle of the screen, and no other action after that. No cursor movement or any response from the keyboard. Leading to cold boot of the system. in short, XFree86, did'nt quite work as it should have.
As an alternative, I have installed these two packages and patches for extended XSun support, which uses this existing XFree86 drivers. I downloaded and "pkgadd"ed the SUNWxf86u & SUNWxf86r and the patches, 109401-10 and 108653-30. Afterwhich, I did find additional adapters showing up in "kdmconfig". I did find Savage IX and other drivers which were'nt found earlier. Selected this driver, with various montitor types in the next scrreen, was unsuccessful in displaying the screen. I have tried the same with VESA and VGA compatible drivers too and different monitor types. Not getting the right display. I have to try the Xig patch. But the existing XFree86 and XSun should still do the work. Any Suggestions & help appreciated.

Regarding T20 laptops with Solaris8. See www.egroups.com Solaris on Intel archive. You can see that Solaris 8 can boot from this kind of hardware. One solution would be:
-Install from the network. Jumpstart installation if your model of laptop has a builtin NIC.
-See more details about this on Jumpstart installation.

  • Optical wheel mouse (USB) on Solaris 8

After following the instruction given in the "Solaris for Intel X86 FAQ" to install XFree86 4.0.2, my Microsoft WheelMouse Optical (on a USB port) doesn't work at all. Furthermore, after adding the CDE fonts in "/usr/openwin/lib/fonts/F3bitmaps/" to XF86Config, the fonts that appear on the CDE login screen look like those bitmap figures that are stretched like craps. What should I do to make my mouse work and how can I configure the CDE so that I see the original fonts that originally comes with SUN? Please advice.

I have the same problem with my mouse. First I installed Solaris 8 - the mouse worked just fine. Then I installed Xfree86 drivers and after reconfiguring and rebooting my system my mouse doesn't work at all. I use XF86Config utility to configure the new X server. At the beginning it asks you about your mouse, so I choose "Microsoft compatible" or "Microsoft IntelliMouse" - it doesn't work. It also asks to point to the mouse driver but I'm not sure what to choose so I use the default /dev/mouse. Please advise.

  • PCMCIA on Compaq Armada M700

    Hi
I have installed Solaris 8 x86 on my Compaq Armada M700 laptop. Everything works fine including video which I installed XFree86 for, except that Solaris does not see my PCMCIA controller.
Does anyone have any sugegstions ?
    Best Regards / Gareth

Does PCMCIA come with a Solaris driver ? I believe it needs a driver
which can recognize the pcmcia card when inserted or to talk to it.
You can look through these sites to find the hardware compatibility
list for your pcmcia card, and there are other driver related
information on these sites, which may help.

  • My laptop display problem - IBM R32

    Sir
I have installed solaris 8 OS on my i86 laptop (IBM-Thinkpad - R32/2656BAG), installation is okey.
but problem is my display setting (graphically) in not looking well. I also tried too many ways to
configure it, like I installed the "Solaris XFree86 video drivers and porting Kit" and run the too many times
"kdmconfig" command for configure but result is NULL (Fail). My laptop use the ATI display.
Please could you help me for the better result.
    Thanks
    Mohammed Tanvir

AFAIK, Thinkpad R32 series should work with procedure below
    1. Install XFree86 Video Driver and Porting Kit
    2. Type kdmconfig
    2-1. "XF86-ATI VGAWonder, Mach8, Mach32, Mach64, Rage128, Radeon" as graphic driver
    2-2. "Notebook LCD XGA 48kHz (1024x768 @ 60Hz)" as monitor
    2-3. "14-inch" for monitor size
    2-4. "1024x768 - 16777216 colors @ 60Hz"
Did you try with these setting and it didn't work?

  • Hanging all over the place

    PLEASE HELP!!!
I've tried to install Solaris 8 on Intel a number of times. Sometimes I get the whole way through the install without a hitch, but then everything hangs once I get into the CDE (I can just sit and stare at it for 5 minutes and it hangs). Other times, it hangs while I'm trying to create a Solaris partition using the install CD and/or while I'm in the CDE finishing the installation from the 2 application CD's.
At first, I read through these threads and thought it was a CDE problem. I got the latest patch and went to install Solaris 8 again, but now I can't even get past creating the partition (which I don't think has any relation to the CDE). I'm dying over here...

I had the same problem and it is in fact got a lot to do with CDE.
It could be that you do not have the right video-card/Monitor combination set but it could also be that you have made the wrong choice for your mouse. It may be that you can NOT get it to set up correctly though in which case you had better read the Solaris x86 FAQ section about using XFree86 as an X-server.
Mind you : you SHOULD be able to bypass the black screen by booting the system with
b -s           (during the 5 second wait that comes before autoboot)
I installed XFree86 version 3.3.5 (couldnt get the latest version 4.0.1 to work) , you will be able to find a pre-compiled version on the net (approx 25MB download) but be aware that in the pre-compilded version I found on the net the program "extract" was missing so I had to take the "extract" version from Xfree4.0.1 which worked just as well.
Remember that you will need Xfree86 but also a server, you will be able to find info on www.xfree86.org telling you which server you need for your type of video hardware. You will need to create a directory /usr/X11R6. Then you need to run preinst.sh followed by "extract" of all the binaries you downloaded (*.tgz files) and to end up you need to run postinst.sh. Also remember to add /usr/X11R6/bin to your PATH variable after which you can run xf86config which will help you onward. The Solaris FAQ holds the missing finishing details.
In a nutshell : IF you CAN boot with b -s then you probably need to install XFree86 as an X-server

  • Driver for Creative graphics blaster 3D CLGD5464 pci vga card

Can anyone tell me from where to find the driver for Creative graphics blaster 3D CLGD 5464 pci vga card. The driver in Solaris8 is for CLGD 5465 which is not compatible with my card. The solaris detects my card as CLGD 5465 but it doesent work. Can anyone tell me what should I do about it?
    thanks, Kashif ([email protected])

If it is not supported by the Xserver under Solaris you may find you can get it to work by installing XFree86 (www.xfree86.org), there are compiled binaries for Solaris Intel that will make the transition easier (personally I found the 3.3.5 version works well). First check at www.xfree86.org if your videa-card IS supported under XFree though. There are some tweaks you need to add to get it all to work in the Solaris x86 FAQ. Since you probably have to do all of this in non-gui its not easy but can be done.

    Yes, you're right.
To solve (until a next release) I done:
    pacman -Rcd gtk2
    pacman -A /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gtk2-2.4.0-1.pkg.tar.gz
And avoid to do pacman -Su ...
    Thanks and bye.
