Instant Client SQL*Plus License Question
Can anyone shed some light on a license question for me? (I know that most license questions are for Oracle Sales to handle, but this involves a supposedly free product.)
I want to use SQL*Plus with the Instant Client in a production environment, but I am not sure whether I am entitled to. Does Instant Client "support" SQL*Plus only in the sense that if I already own a license for SQL*Plus I can use it with the Instant Client, or is the Instant Client SQL*Plus package also truly free to deploy and use?
The download page has links to download a basic Instant Client, plus several optional packages, one of which is SQL*Plus. However, the FAQ does not tell me whether the optional packages (specifically SQL*Plus) is also free to deploy and use in a production environment, and I could not find any other helpful document.
The FAQ says that "Instant Client is FREE for anyone to use in a development or production environment." It also says immediately following that "Instant Client can be used to run your OCI, OCCI, Pro*C, JDBC, and ODBC applications without installing a full Oracle Client. In addition, Instant Client supports SQL*Plus." [emphasis mine]
I would appreciate any help on this.
Thanks in advance,
Anthony
Why don't you call Oracle sales? I guess they'll be happy to answer your question.

Opening multiple sessions in SQL*Plus - Basic Question
Hi All,
I'm trying to issue an update on a table consists of 100 million rows.(update is done on every row). I have queries that updates this table in chunks of 20 million rows. So, if I open 5 sessions in SQL*Plus and run these 5 queries, does that mean Oracle opens up 5 processes in parallel for me ?
If yes, can I use parallel hint in each of these 5 queries and make the update even faster ? How does the above 2 differ ?
I'll be very glad if I hear from anyone,
Thanks,
Madhu.For every client session there is a server session associated with it. Such as, when you open five session you will have five server session and it serve queires.
Regarding paralle queries, depends whether your table is defined as parallel, how many cpu do you have and also parallel parameters.

SQL*Plus Worksheet Question
I just upgraded to 8.1.6 and started using SQLPlus worksheet. Is there away to set output screen to display horizontal instead of vertical?
Thank you in Advance
nullIn some client version (8.1.5 or 8.1.6), I remember I had the same problem. I think that the solution is to use or not the semi-column at th end of the command.
But, remember that Java SQL*Plus Worksheet is using SQL*Plus. Then if U have a lot of results to display, it's longer with the worksheet version. -
SQL*Plus Upgrade Questions [Help!!]
Hello,
Our project is using Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.3.0 database and Oracle Dev Tools 6i Patch 3 (Form/Report Builder 6.0.8.12.1).
The SQL*Plus version that comes with this version is 8.0.6.0.0. We would like to upgrade to version 8.1.7.0.0. without having to upgrade the entire tool set [don't ask me why- politics ;)]. How can I do this? Is it even possible? I found some documentation that said all that was required for SQL Plus version 8.1.7.0.0 was Oracle 8i 8.1.7.0.0 database, which we have.
I grabbed Dev Tools 6i Patch 10 from MetaLink and installed in a seperate directory from one that our developers use as a test [for other unrelated issues]. Well, Patch 10 also comes with SQL Plus verison 8.0.6.0.0, even though it came out in early 2002, well after version 8.1.7.0.0 was released.
One of our test boxes has Oracle 9i iSuite installed, which does have SQL Plus 8.1.7.0.0. As a lark, I tried various was of simply moving its version (the .exe) and related .dlls to our existing test Dev 6i bin directory. No luck- all sorts of bizarre error messages. After I got through all the .dlls errors, I now get a
"The procedure entry point OCIUserCallbackRegister could not be located in the dll OCI.dll", even though the updated OCI.dll is in the bin.
I assume this all means that to upgrade from SQL Plus 8.0.6.0.0 to 8.1.7.0.0 it has to be installed [and not simply dropped]. Since the latest version of our tools [Dev 6i Patch 10] only has version 8.0.6.0.0, how can I install it?

WCS base upgrade to PLUS license question
I have a 50 AP base WCS running. What kind if license do I need to order to be able to do location? These two have the same price, but can I upgrade to 100 WPLUS from 50 BASE by ordering the second one?
L-LIC-WPLUS-50
50 AP WPLUS license (Delivery via Email)
L-LIC-WPLUS-100U
50 to 100 AP WPLUS upgrade license (Delivery via Email)
Thanks,

CISCO BASE-TO-CISCO PLUS UPGRADE FOR EXISTING CUSTOMERS (WCS-PLUS-UPG-K9)
• If you are an EXISTING customer who wants to upgrade from a Cisco Base to Cisco PLUS license, order WCS-PLUS-UPG-K9 and select one of the Cisco WCS PLUS upgrade options below:
WCS-PLUS-UPG-50: License supports up to 50 access points. <---------------------
WCS-PLUS-UPG-100: License supports up to 100 access points.
WCS-PLUS-UPG-500: License supports up to 500 access points.
Note: The number of WCS-PLUS-UPG-K9 licenses purchased must equal or exceed the number of installed WCS Base licenses for the Cisco WCS to register as a Cisco WCS PLUS system. Thereafter, additional capacity is added by ordering PLUS licenses.

Instant Client Lite Charactet set question
Hello.
I just wanted to ask if Instant Client Lite supports the WE8ISO8859P1 character set.
Some parts of the documentation says It does and others says It does not..... What is the reality??
thanksI am setting NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1 before calling my OCCI app that uploads a blob to a remote DB.
However - it doesn't work:
ORA-12737 - Instant Client Light - Unsupported Character Set EE8ISO8859P2
On my test DB it works, this is on client's db. So does the setting on the server db matter?
What is the work-around?
thank you!

Good Day to ALL!
I have a script of SQLPlus that creates a report. I have 8/9 numeric columns which are 'SUM'ed up thru 'COMPUTE' command. It works for all BUT 2 columns. If I put these two columns, compute does not take affect. If I remove these two columns ( just cut) 'COMPUTE' works fine!!! These two coulumns use DB Function. But I have other column that also use DB Function. These two columns has some extra additions. Any thing wrong with the script/column defn.
Thanks - Pradip (Pradip Biswas @Singapore) Could you pl. reply to [email protected]
Here is bit of script. Sorry about the length of the cut and paste.

/Hi Barry and All: This indeed is a bug in SQLPLUS ! Version 9.2.0.1.0 as well.
Thanks for asking the version no of SQLLPLUs. I was working thru Oracle Apps 11i.10 (concurrent program). So I did not get any message from SQLPLUS.
I tested independently in SQLPLUS and got the message! Thanks Oracle!!!
The Bug is in the name of COLUMN NAME or ALIAS Name. I renamed the columns from ON_HAND_QTY and ON_HAND_VALUE to CLOSE_QTY and CLOSE_QTY_VALUE. It worked!! The string 'ON' in the column/alias name is taken as 'ON' keyword/clause for 'compute' statement for SQLPLUS.
Here is the message from SQLPLUS

Can't get instant client to work on Win XP
This is driving me nuts. I'm trying to get instantclient10_1 (10.1.0.4) to work reliably on Win XP so I can use it in deploying a Python app I'm writing. I have one XP system on which I have the instant client installed and working. By this I mean that it works with the appropriate of sqlplus. It also works with cx_Oracle. However, I do need to set ORACLE_HOME in order to achieve this (contra the documentation). I do not seem to need to set SQLPATH.
But I can't get it to work on any other system. I copy my instantclient10_1 directory over and use the same batch file that works on the "good" system, but I get "invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified". I'm using a command of the form
sqlplus user_name/[email protected]:1521/db_name
I've also tried a "fresh" install on that machine. Same story. I've tried it on another machine as well. Same story. It only works on this one machine!
It actually took me quite a while to get it to work on that machine, involving installing and uninstalling the full client, the instant client, both, etc. But it does work there.
Another odd "feature": On the "good" machine, if I fail to set ORACLE_HOME, it errors and suggests I do this. On the "bad" machine, I just get the "invalid or unknown NLS" error.
There are other ORACLE directories on these machines (e.g., ORA17). But I get the same results if I hide these and take all reference to them out of environment variables.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Why is it working on the one system? Why isn't it working on the others?There's one more way that the previously-existing Oracle directories on the other machines might be tripping you up - with registry settings. In particular, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\(some home)NLS_LANG registry key may be associated with the "invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified" error you're getting.
Of course, the Instant Client isn't supposed to have to mess with the registry, so that makes me suspicious. And I got Instant Client SQL*PLUS on a clean XP machine to work without setting an ORACLE_HOME. All this makes me suspicious that some stuff from outside your Instant Client is being run. I know you said you cleaned your environment variables, but double-check that the other Oracle directories are out of your PATH.
If you have permission to, you might want to thoroughly scrub the old Oracles from the other machines (starting with running the Oracle Installer, then hand-cleaning the registry, the c:\Ora92 or whatever directory, and then c:\Program Files\Oracle). If you have MetaLink, Document 74790.1 is a dated but good guide to cleanly de-installing an old Oracle installation from Windows. It's much more difficult than it ought to be; sometimes it feels like an Oracle home is never truly gone. If you can't do that, perhaps save a copy of your registry and then temporarily rename HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE to ORACLE_HIDDEN, or something - something to keep any existing registry settings from distracting your Instant Client.
Good luck! -
The problem still remain:
I've installed oracle 10g instant client
SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.3.0 - Production on Wed Jan 10 12:43:40 20
PHP VERSION: php-5.2.0 for Win32
APACHE VERSION: apache_2.0.59 for WIN32
But I've the same old error when I try to restart Apache:
The procedure entry point OCILobRead2 could not be located in the dinamic link library OCI.dll
Is there anyone who can help me to solve this kind of problem?
Thanks in advance.The solution is that you need to have Oracle 10g client side libraries
installed (or you have to recompile PHP yourself). The oci8 extension
has some version dependent code and the person who builds Windows PHP
builds it with the latest version of Oracle. I was discussing the
impact of this just this week.
Luckily Oracle Instant Client can be downloaded and used for free from
http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/index.html

Problem using Instant Client 10g with PHP4.3.10-16 on Debian Sarge
Hello,
My current email is [email protected]
I am trying to use PHP on Debian box using Oracle 10gR2 on a RH 4 server. Everything works fine individually, but I cannot get PHP4 to use InstantClient to connect to the Oracle Server. This is what I've done:
Oracle 10gR2 works fine on the RH 4 server. Listener is running and all required OS security is in place and works (TCP_wrappers, etc.).
Client machine runs Debian 3.1 (Sarge). It works fine and SSH connectivity to RH4 server works.
Instant Client 10gR2 installed on Debian client and works fine. Tested SQL*Plus connection to the RH server. I installed Instant Client from the zip file.
I did have to add libclntsh.so to /etc/ld.so.conf and run ldconfig to get Debian to use it, though.
Apache2.0.54-5 on Debian client works fine. Web pages on it can be opened in browsers from other machines.
Installed PHP4.3.10-16 on Debian client using following:
./configure --with-oci8-instant-client=<dir of my choice>
--enable-sigchild
I first checked ./configure help and the option with-oci8-instant-client was there.
Configure went well. Log showed checking for Instant Client files.
Ran make. Saw numerous Instant Client message as words scrolled.
Ran make install. Successful.
Restarted Apache2 with following env variables:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=<my Instant Client directory)
TNS_ADMIN=<same directory where I put my sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora files).
SQLPATH=<same directory>
I know this is correct because Instant Client SQL*Plus can connect.
Browsers on other machines can view simple php scripts run from the Debian box.
BUT, phpinfo does NOT show an OCI8 section.
phpinfo does show the correct extension directory, though.
Somehow, my PHP4 configure and make is not using the --with-oci8-instant-client option.
I checked $PHP4HOME/ext/oci8/config.m4 file and the verbiage IS in there to use the --with-oci8-instant-client option, either with the default location or the extension_dir location.
I tried using the new ZendCore product, even though it is not certified for Debian. It installed okay but I could not get PHP5 to work. I uninstalled it successfully and redid all of the above.
So, any ideas as to what else I can do here? Other than not use Debian (which is probably the wisest thing to do). And I suppose I could install a thick Oracle client, assuming that Debian would take it. But I prefer the Instant Client.
I tried the PHP ./configure syntax I've seen several places on this forum.
./configure --with-oci8=instantclient,<directory>
This syntax may work on Red Hat machines but it throws a syntax error on Debian and aborts the configure.
Thanks for any help.Thanks, but that did not work. Configure aborts because it cannot find the required OCI8 libraries. The --with-oci8 option is for the Oracle "thick" client. I have only the Instant Client...and am not interested in loading the older client.
I may have my own solution next week, though. I will be loading RH4 on a new server and will then install ZendCore and forget all about using Oracle with Debian.
Update on trying ZendCore on Debian Sarge:
I tried installing it again yesterday. The install seemed go to well, and said it was successful.
It did NOT load PHP5, however. Nor did it load the Instant Client. My previously installed PHP4 and Instant Client remained in my original directories. -
Can SQL*Plus connect via ODBC to NON-Oracle data source?????
I am struggling to understand something. I downloaded Oracle instance client, SQL*Plus and ODBC components with the hopes of being able to connect via SQL*Plus to a non-Oracle/ODBC compliant database.
Is this possible? Or is SQL*Plus ability to connect via ODBC only to an Oracle data source??
Thanks...sqlplus only connects to oracle. you can use the odbc driver from instant client to allow other applications to access oracle via odbc (e.g. excel). if you need to connect to non-oracle odbc database (ms-access, foxpro, etc.) you need odbc driver for those sources.
you can use sqldeveloper to connect to oracle and non-oracle databases. check otn product info for sqldeveloper for more details. -
Hi, i have recently started a new course where i am required to learn sql using the sql*plus program and several books. I have downloaded the instant client and the sql*plus program so that i can run them on my computer at home so i can learn at home. However i get a problem where i cannot logon to sql*plus.
I believe this may be because i do not have an oracle server running on my pc, i am however not sure, would be gratefull for any help.Yes, you will need an Oracle Server to connect to. On your personal system, you can download Oracle XE (Express Edition) from OTN and use that. It contains both the server and client (SQL*Plus) components.

I have a script file(.sql) which contains Chinese characters ....
I have saved the file in unicode Format.

My database is Oracle 10g...
Can anyone suggest anything???
Thanks In Advance

Edited by: Devarsh on Oct 21, 2009 8:16 AMI think you may need to set your local NLS_LANG setting for your client (SQL*Plus) to recognize the characters.

Maximum length of SQL*Plus Command?
I'm typing a long query into SQL*Plus (Linux, version 9.2.0.1... yes, I know it's ancient).
If I run this query, all works fine:
select 'update myauditing_table set test_details='''||grantee||''' where myaudit_refno=''A.FE'';' from (select case when upper(value) in ('DBO','TRUE') then (select agg_concat(grantee) from dba_tab_privs where table_name='AUD$')
else (select 'AUDIT_TRAIL is set to: '||value from dual) end as grantee from v$parameter where upper(name)='AUDIT_TRAIL' order by grantee);
'UPDATEMYAUDITING_TABLESETTEST_DETAILS='''||GRANTEE||'''WHEREMYAUDIT_REFNO=''A.F
update myauditing_table set test_details='AUDIT_TRAIL is set to: DB' where myaud
it_refno='A.FE';(In other words, is SQL that generates other SQL: if AUDIT_TRAIL is set to something interesting, tell me who has access to the AUD$ table. And it's working fine... the agg_concat function mentioned is simply Tom Kyte's stragg function under another name, as lifted word-for-word from http://www.sqlsnippets.com/en/topic-11591.html)
Now this is what happens if I take out the linebreak after the mention of AUD$, so that the command is submitted as one single line of code:
SQL> select 'update myauditing_table set test_details='''||grantee||''' where myaudit_refno=''A.FE'';' from (select case when upper(value) in ('DBO','TRUE') then (select agg_concat(grantee) from dba_tab_privs where table_name='AUD$') else (select 'AUDIT_TRAIL is set to: '||value from dual) end as grantee from v$parameter where upper(name)='AUDIT_TRAIL' order by grantee);
SP2-0734: unknown command beginning "s set to: ..." - rest of line ignored.The error message indicates that the text has been 'split' at the 'AUDIT_TRAIL is set to...' bit, so that "s set to" is being treated as a new command, which is of course syntactically invalid. There is definitely no other change in text between the two versions, apart from the removal of a carriage return before the "else" statement.
Possibly a coincidence, but the first "s" in "s set to" appears at position 258 in the entire text... close to a possible 255 or 256 character limit, perhaps?
The same problem happens whether I run the command as a script (@mysql.sql) or typed in directly into a client SQL*Plus session. Is there some inherent limit to the length of commands that SQL*Plus can process in this version? My code runs fine on 10g and 11g databases/clients, whether it's on one line or two. Anyone know of a bug in 9i regarding this? And if there's a workaround (other than the obvious one of upgrading, of course!)As mentioned, it's choking at the 258th character, not the 240th. Also, it's a SELECT statement, not a COPY command (one relates to the database, the other is an internal SQL*Plus feature). And someone else also kindly pointed out that SQL*Plus has a command limit length (i.e., database-related commands) of 2500 characters. So I don't think that's the issue.
I can be a bit more specific about this one now, though. I've a sequence of Solaris boxes running 9.2.0.1 up, and the results are that 9.2.0.1 is affected; and it's a problem for 9.2.0.7:
SQL> select * from v$version;

PL/SQL Release 9.2.0.1.0 - Production

SP2-0734: unknown command beginning "s set to: ..." - rest of line ignored.And...
SQL> select * from v$version;
BANNER
Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.7.0 - 64bit Production
PL/SQL Release 9.2.0.7.0 - Production
CORE 9.2.0.7.0 Production

NLSRTL Version 9.2.0.7.0 - Production
SQL> select 'update myauditing_table set test_details='''||grantee||''' where myaudit_refno=''A.FE'';' from (select case when upper(value) in ('DBO','TRUE') then (select agg_concat(grantee) from dba_tab_privs where table_name='AUD$') else (select 'AUDIT_TRAIL is set to: '||value from dual) end as grantee from v$parameter where upper(name)='AUDIT_TRAIL' order by grantee);
SP2-0734: unknown command beginning "s set to: ..." - rest of line ignored.But in 10.2.0.1, the problem disappears.
I am not sure, but it is perhaps related to metalink note 285913.1, since we did get some ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [qernsRowP], [1] errors in the alert log with a slightly different version of the above query. Changing the query obviously alters the test, though, so it may be completely unrelated.
Either way, I think it's definitely a version-specific SQL*Plus bug (though it would be nice if any other 9i owners out there could try it and report back!)
Anyway, the workaround is simply to submit the command on two separate lines, wherever possible. And of course... to upgrade. -
TNSPING failure and but surprising connecting through SQL*PLUS
I have Oracle 9i and Oracle 10g express edition installed on my local machine.But since in the path i specified path of Oracle10g first so always tnsnames.ora got picked up from Oracl10g directory which is
C:\softwares\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
Following are the contents of my sqlnet.ora :--->
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
Following are the contents of my tnsnames.ora:-->
CCTD91 =(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = cctdev91.jankoc.com)(PORT = 1521)))(CONNECT_DATA =(SERVICE_NAME = CCTD91)))
Now when i am doing tnsping to this i got the error as:
C:\>tnsping cctd91
TNS Ping Utility for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on 23-APR-2011 16:08:52

Used parameter files:
C:\softwares\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
TNS-03505: Failed to resolve name
But when i connect through Oracle 9i client(SQL*Plus) like peter/devworks@CCTD91, then i am able to connect successfully to Oracle 11g.
Could someone let me know why TNSPING is failing for this and then still why i am able to connect thru SQL*PLUS using the name defined in TNSNAMES.ORA. ?sqlnet.ora is having just one line:
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
I tried by adding another line: NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH=(TNSNAMES) but did not make any difference so i removed.
