Intel High Definition Audio

Is the built in sound card capable of handling 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound? I've been thinking of installing one of those two in my room but I'm not sure if I would have the surround sound effect.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 GHz; 2 Gb memory; 100 Gb, 5400 rpm hard drive.

The actual D/A inthe mbp is mediocre by any standard. However the integrity of the digital signal is of course fine. If a good D/A is attached to it in the form of a decent sound interface then the quality can be much better.
I read somewhere this morning that the optical out will support DTS (digital theatre system) which in it's basic format is a 5.1 system. It has 6.1 and 7.1 varients as well which may or may not have been included.
Sorry I can't for the life of me remember where I read that.
Personally I am starting to believe that the optical out can carry a surround signal for decoding by a suitable surround amp.
OSX can handle as many physical outputs as you have hardware. But surround systems such as 5.1 need decoding first.

  • System Preferences not detecting intel high definition audio

I have tried researching as much as possible before posting and I just can't find a solution.
I have a 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 Macbook Pro late 2011 running Mavericks 10.9.4 (13E28) on 8 GB RAM and Intel HD Graphincs 3000 512 MB, and my audio devices are not identified in audio MIDI setup or system preferences. Looking at system information the audio hardware is recognized (but there is no "built-in" beside 'audio' in the navigation pane).
    I've tried reinstalling Mavericks, 10.9.0, 10.9.2, 9.3 and 9.4.
I've tried installing the combo pack for 10.9.4
After each install I've reset the PRAM and SMC for each reinstall.
I know my speakers work because I hear the chime when i start up. My internal microphone and line-in are also part of this problem with the audio devices. They don't show up in sound preferences either. To my knowledge the only issue seems to be with the audio.
My direct question is: How do i make my system preferences recognize my internal microphone, my internal speakers, and my built-in line?
I'd appreciate any input, this is my first posting to the community. Thank you all for viewing.

I looked into the community and saw that someone had the exact same problem. Their solution was to backup valuable data and clean install the operating system. I have followed through on this and have sound =). Just waiting now for my backups to complete.
I'm being cautious what I put back into the settings because I believe that's where some files my have been corrupted. Not sure. For the most part, thanks for viewing to those who did.

  • HP ENVY TS 15 Notebook PC: Problems installing audio driver (High Definition Audio device)

    Hello all,
My product is the HP ENVY TS 15 Notebook PC.
    Product number: E3B65PA#AR6
    OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit
A few days ago, I  upgraded my windows from windows 8 to windows 8.1 and found that no sound coming from the HDTV when connecting my HDMI cable however video is perfectly fine. I was completely baffled because the audio was working perfectly fine before upgrading to Windows 8.1. I have tried several solutions posted on other forums, such as installing other drivers, and uninstalling the IDT High Definition Audio Driver and then scanning for a hardware change. I have checked the HDMI cable and it is working fine with other laptop.
Device manager is showing 2 device :
High Definition audio device ( Showing yellow traingle)
      IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
When I am opening the properties of High Definition audio device it is showing :
This device cannot start (code 10)

    The requested operation was unsuccessful.
If anyone knows how to fix the problem, please help me
    thanks in advance

    Hi:
The IDT audio driver (notebook speakers) appears to be working fine.
The problem is probably with the Intel graphics driver which  controls the HDMI audio.
My recommendation would be to install the latest Intel graphics driver from the link below and see if that fixes the problem.

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59001-59500/sp59291.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow thisand then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Start the notebook and let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.

  • ATI high definition audio device driver

Same problem as aldwellangel (04-30-2014): failed attempt to install device driver.  The error message was preceded by a message box entitled "Installing device driver software" which said it was "Searching preconfigured driver folders ...".  Problem started some months ago for no apparent reason, but its only effect seems to be to delay startup.  At the same time a similar problem occurred with "IDT High Definition Audio Codec"; this was solved by installing the driver from the hp site.
I downloaded and installed the 64 bit driver in accordance with the posted Solution, but that made no difference. I then downloaded the 32 bit driver.  It would not install, the installation program reported "No driver was supported in this driver package".
I am running an hp Pavilion dv7 with Win7 up to date.

    Hey hgfr,
Try updating the chipset drivers. You can find these here: Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver.
Also, try reinstalling the GPU which controls the HDMI audio: AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver
If the pop-up is more of an annoyance it is possible to disable the popup from showing, but it's still going to search for new drivers each time you boot and will also hide other new hardware from showing up when connected. To do this:
    Press Windows Key + R.
    Type gpedit.msc and click OK.
Expand the Computer Configuration section on the left.
    Expand the Administrative Templates section.
    Expand the System section.
    Click on Device Installation.
On the right you should see a list of settings. Double click on Turn off "Found New Hardware" balloons during device installation.
Click Enabled in the upper left area. (Yes, enabled. Not disabled. You are enabling the turn off feature.)
    Click OK.
    Close the Group Policy Editor.
Let me know if updating the chipset or GPU helps or if disabling the popup is OK.
Please click the "Kudos, Thumbs Up" at the bottom of this post if you want to say "Thanks" for helping!

  • "AMD HDMI Output -AMD High Definition Audio Device not plugged in

i have an HP Pavilion dv6-6110us laptop. i have had this laptop for less than 1 month and the sound is not working at all. I checked to make sure nothing was muted, i uninstalled the soundcard and reinstalled it on Device Manager, and still, I cannot manage to get the sound back on. the audio settings says "AMD HDMI Output -AMD High Definition Audio Device not plugged in) ..but i have no clue how to "plug it in". Help!!!?

Hey! You essentially have two sound cards, including the HDMI. First, make sure you're using the ATI graphics card, and not the Intel, when you want to use the HDMI.
Next, go to Windows Control Panel\Sound
On the playback tab (which shows by default), WHEN YOUR HDMI IS PLUGGED IN AND WORKING, you should see two playback devices: Your internal sound card/speakers, and the AMD HDMI. All you need to do is switch between the playback device you want the sound to be channelled to. You can switch this at any time. I do this when watching in the other room via my projector, or in my comp. room. Just select the HDMI sound device and choose the button on bottom-middle "Set Default". This will change the "default device" tag to below the HDMI playback device. To reset, either unplug the HDMI, or switch it here. This is always the first place you should look when you have sound issues.
Because I switch quite often, I have a shortcut link on my desktop to this sound menu, for quick switching.
If this doesn't work, make sure you have drivers for your ATI video card installed. Check you exact model and make sure your bios is up to date. They have made for switchable graphics now, which is much preferable to the previous auto-detect switch. The drivers are updated, as well. The latest HP drivers for the ATI were released in November. You can install these, then install the latest AMD/ATI Mobility Video Driver package over the top to make sure you have the latest video drivers. Either of these packages includes the HDMI audio driver, which you may not have installed.

    Hey,
Try installing this driver: IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver
If that fails, try using the HP Recovery Manager to roll back to the factory installed driver.
Test after both. Let me know if either option worked.

  • MSI P4M900M2-L ~Realtek High Definition Audio Driver Issue Resolved In XP!

Realtek High Definition Audio Driver Issue Resolved!  MSI P4M900M2-L Intel Dual Core VIA P4M900 Chipset 8 CH Azalia Audio.
There is an issue w/ the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver for the MSI P4M900M2-L Intel Based Dual Core Via P4M900 Chipset based Motherboard w/ MS XP Home Premium Installed (Vista driver installs fine as I have built 4 of these in the last week, but the XP Audio driver doesn't).
I could not get either Audio driver from the CD driver disk nor the MSI site to install w/ Win XP Home installed. Live Update for that Motherboard does not contain the Audio Driver either.
After 3 days and multiple attempts to use MSI's very wanting (in my opinion), Technical Support forms and call-in line, I hunted, and hunted and found the driver(s) on CNET. They not only work great but as designed. I had almost given up and I actually installed an add-in sound card....But this is a machine for a customer. Then I searched again and found a real solution.

Good luck to everyone, this will save you RMA'ing those boards over a stupid Audio driver issue, as they are great w/ the Intel Dual Core 775 CPU's from 2.0~3.0Ghz. Can't really tell the difference between the 2 CPU's w/ the Dual Core Program running (a utility supplied on the driver disk or on the Driver site!) I have built both..2 of each.
