Intel Xserves Crash only on weekends

We have 10 Intel XServes that we received in early December. For some reason anywhere between 2-6 of the 10 crash and become unresponsive, only on the weekends, usually Saturdays. Very odd.
I've been checking them every weekend since we've purchased them and it has been consistent for the last 5+ weeks. They crash only on weekends.
I found this in the crashreporter log on one of the servers, they all have similar logs:
Sat Dec 23 14:28:50 2006 crashdump[120]: crashdump invoked as panicdump
Sun Dec 24 02:11:08 2006 crashdump[1814]: crashdump started

Does anyone have any ideas? What other logs should I be checking?
Quad G5s, Intel XServes   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Xsans, XServe RAIDs, oh my...

The "drone" is our encoding software. That may be the cause, but i'm not entirely sure of course.
Here is the panic log:

  • New Intel Xserve crashing.

    Hi
My College bought a new Intel Xserve last month.
I have set it up and configured all the iMacs in the art department to access it and created user accounts for all the students. The server has been happily working for around three weeks now, however over the last two days the server has locked up twice. Users can't authenticate and I cant us ARD to remote control it. If I go to the server room and physically control the server I can use the mouse but all input doesn't seem to register. For example if I try and click on Server Admin the app doesn't launch, I can click on force quit and get the same results, if I press applealtescape force quit doesn't appear.
Has anyone else experienced these kinds of problems with their Xserve or could give any indication of what the problem might be? I can provide dumps of any server log you request.
    Thanks
    Phil

This sound like it could be related to the networking hardware. Any chance that you have a defective switch or router?

  • Firefox crashes only on weekends, has anyone else had similiar problem during past months?

From Monday to Friday system works fine but when I try to open Firefox browser on Saturday or Sunday there is a text on the top "no response" and it is totally jammed. I have Windows vista os and other browsers works fine at the same time. If someone have had similiar problems and succeeded to solve them, please inform. I have reinstalled browser several times but it doesn't help and same phenomen has occured every weekend since last May.

I just paid my Verizon bill on line but the only problem this time is that for some reason, I never received an email notification of my bill.  I just happened to stumble on my bill on line while I was reading about other information.
I always received the email notification before and I never delete emails like that.
    What's going on?
Interesting......I did receive a notification on 11/11 for my bill due 12/2. I have not received a notification for my bill due 1/1 and I received the 1/1 paper bill today. Just checked my Account Profile and found that the Bill Notifications box was not checked and I think that is the setting that controls the bill notification email (and/or SMS). I have been getting notifications each month for quite a while, so I am guessing some Verizon maintenance update caused the check to be removed. I have activated Bill Notification again so now I guess I just have to wait and see if I get one next month.
I suggest you check your account profile to see if the Bill Notifications setting has somehow been turned off.
Edit: I See you edited your post while I was writing mine.  I do not use paper-free billing so that is one difference.

  • Intel xServe fans run at max only when connected to Netgear JGS524 switch

The fans will slowly ramp up to 11k - 16k rpm when either one (or both) of the network connections are plugged into the NETGEAR JGS524 switch. When unplugged, the fans will reduce to a normal 6k - 7k rpm. This wasn't an issue before the server was upgraded to Leopard server from Tiger server.
Swapped out the Ethernet cables, swapped out the switch with a brand new one, removed all other connections from switch--no dice. The server can be connected directly to a NETGEAR FVS318 router with no problem and the fans will run normally.
Does anyone know of any firmware issues or software issues--or any other issues--that affect Leopard server and NETGEAR JGS524?

Swapping the Netgear switch out for a different brand would be something to try. I can't do that right now, but it's on the list.
The temporary solution is to leave the connections set to 100BaseTX to keep the fans in check.
I tried to update the firmware, but it won't update to either version I have.
The machine is an xServe (Late 2006). It's firmware is at XS11.0080.B03 --which I can find no information about whatsoever.
The updater packages for EFI 1.0 and 1.1 complain: 'Alert This computer does not need this update.' Also, the 'xServe EFI Firmware Update.app' is not in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder as the firmware installation instructions on Apple's site mention. Is this an issue? Or do the EFI firmware packages contain the necessary installer?
The latest firmware for any Intel xServe is XS11.0080.B06 (EFI 1.1)--for Early 2008 models. The only previous update I can find is XS11.0080.B01 (EFI 1.0)--for Late 2006. But that's actually lower than what I have.
This site show the only info I can find about xServe EFI firmware: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Has anyone ever heard of the XS11.0080.B03 firmware? Or know how I can force my machine to update or revert the firmware?

  • Intel Xserve will NOT boot from hard disk drive

I have two Intel Xserves 2.0 QC machines
I have tried to re-install version 10.4.11 OS (don't ask) onto a Hard disk drive that is in a Disk drive caddy and inserted in the machine.
When booting from The installation DVD media
The disk is seen by the "Disk Utility" (the disk is partitioned as GUID boot) and the installation proceeds to the disk.
Once the first pass of the installation is complete and the system reboots, the system shows the folder and ? mark.
If I boot and hold "ALT" key to view all avaialble boot options the Hard Disk Drive does NOT appear as valid boot disk.
It does show, the still inserted Installation DVD.
I CAN boot from an external firewire drive and the Hard disk drive is visible to the OS once logged in.
I have tried different caddy postions (left, middle and right)
I have tried bona fide Apple supplied Disk drives
I have tried various different caddies
I have tried installing Operating System 10.5.*  and  10.6.8 server
I have run SMC reset and system reset
But still I cannot boot off from any Hard Disk Drive inserted in a caddy at the front of the system.
    Has anyone seen this behaviour?
    Is it fixable?
Do I have replace something like the Hard Disk Drive back plane circuit board? Or even the main logic board?
I have now run out of ideas and cannot find any help in discussions or just googling.
ANY help would be very appreciated
    Regards
    Tony

    Antonio Hi !
QC = Quad core  or  QX as it is written on the "pull out" serial number tab at rear of system
    I have 3 late 2006 Intel xserves
On my intial posting I declared 2 were 2.0 machines - when I was trying to be concise
2 of the macines are 2.66 systems and 1 is 2.0 system - all are QX machines
the 2.0 and 1 of the 2.66 will NOT boot from the ADM and disk inside the system - whereas the other 2.66 system will.
I have many different Caddies and these have different product/model number labels
    603-9965
    603-9545
    603-9796
    these are marked "intel SATA"
The 80Gb was only one of the drives tested - I have used Seagate 400Gb 750Gb and 1Tb  -  all of which have been used in systems at one time or another
and as I said the drives ARE visible once the operating system (either installation DVD or external firewire are booted from) - they are just NOT visible when the system is searching for boot media.
Thanks for the guide - I will look through that and continue to try and find an answer

  • Intel Xserve and Apple Xserve Diagnostics

Has anyone figured out how to run the Apple Xserve Diagnostics (AXD) that is included with the new servers? The documentation is very poor to say the least, in once instance the user guide says to see the user guide for more information. Another pdf says to refer to www.apple.com/server/documentation for information on AXD yet this site has no mention of the intel Xserve yet. I've searched the service manual and got much of the same run around.
I've managed to install the AXD on another Mac OS X server and activated the netboot image but it does not appear to run in the same manor as the Apple Remote Diagnostics for the Xserve G5s. Any help is appreciated!

Unless someone knows different the only place I know of is here:
    https://gsx.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/GSXAppServer.woa
You need an Apple ID. To access the Service Source you'll probably need a Tech ID. Alternatively you could apply for the CD from Apple directly? Or from an Apple Authorized Repair Specialist. You could take the XServe directly to either of those locations and see if they can run the Diagnostic tools for you?

  • Intel Xserve + Xserve RAID + SCSI

I have a requirement for an Intel Xserve system that I can connect an Xserve RAID and SCSI tape autoloader to. It seems that Apple won't let me configure a system with a SCSI card and a fibre channel card in it at the same time, and repeated phone calls to them have yielded precisely nothing (very disappointed with the lack of professionalism and knowledge displayed by the Apple sales and tech staff on this matter).
Can I have such a configuration? It seems that I can only fit a fibre channel PCIe card in expansion slot 1 as it is too long to fit in slot 2 which is limited to 6" long cards. I've seen that Atto do PCIe SCSI cards but there is no mention on their site about whether they will fit/work in slot 2 of an Xserve and emails to them have gone unanswered.
If anyone has any info on this, or could point me in the direction of the info, I would be very grateful. Or if what I want isn't possible, ideas on how to back up a 7TB array without direct attached tape storage would also be appreciated.

Actually, having just looked at the store, Apple
don't seem to offer any PCIe SCSI cards, just a PCI-X
one with a PCI-X riser. Would this configuration stop
me using a PCIe card in slot 2?
Avoid the Apple BTO SCSI card like the plague. It's junk.
It's really a rebranded LSI Logic 22320. Ours never worked
right in our Xserve G5; we replaced it with an ATTO UL4D and
all of our problems went away. The right card for the intel
Xserve is the ATTO UL5D or UL5D low profile (both are PCIe).

The Apple-rebranded LSI Logic 22320 sits on a shelf gathering
    dust.

  • Xserver crashes intermittently after a recent (yesterday?) upgrade

I am running arch stable on thinkpad x61s, with
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)
Since yesterday or, so my Xserver crashes every half an hour or so, usually when I do something with keyboard.  I guess that this means that there is some problem with the keyboard driver, or with the graphics driver (as whenever I do something with keyboard, stuff is drawn/redrawn usually).
I believe I have started sufferring from this problem a day or two ago, after a series of upgrades to xorg related packages.  Can anybody give me some hints how to debug it ?  Are there any log files I should check first? This makes my machine essentially unusable.

I am using the intel driver:
    Driver "intel"
    VendorName "Intel Corporation"
BoardName "Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller"
    BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
    EndSection
thanks a lot - then I know what is the reason, and will keep an eye on this.  Perhaps I should revert. Today no crash has happened, though.  Let me see how this develops.  At least I am not giving any presentations in this laptop within a week or so.

  • Intel Xserve and kernel panic on high I/O load

    Hi everyone,
Having added our 1st Intel Xserve to our server farm for test purposes we have encoutered several kernel panics on high I/O loads to Xsan volumes and standalone Xraid's.
Below is a portion of the system.log after restart.
The amusing part of this is that the crash reporter that suposed to log the reason for the crash crashed itself.
I was trying to use the new Xserve as a backup server but even with about 20% load on all 4 processors it will panic and restart.
Verdict: absolutley unreliable and useless if you need your Xserve to shuffle a lot of data around. The kernel drivers for the Apple FC card has also been changed which caused problems with our Archiware Presstore backup software.(kernel panic)
Looks like Apple is tampering with the multi core kernel of 10.4.8 on the Intel Xenon Processors at the moment and hasn't got it right yet. Well, we got one revision left to get this fixed before 10.5 comes out and that's still miles away from being usuable to say the least.
Thank you Apple, for selling your latest products that don't work as usual.
Any comments of similar experiences are welcome.

While I have found a few problems as well, I have gotten the intel xserve fairly stable (it did take a while and a lot of apple support calling)
I haven't had kernal panics, but I haven't been able to get the processors above 45% when doing compression. Also, I had some nasty lun masking problems with the fibre card which did result in corrpution of a HFS raid volume.
On the topic of xsan and the intel xserve, it is a BAD idea to try to install anything prior to 1.4.0. Had hangs, crashes and even corruption of the serial licensing daemon. Installing 1.4 and upgrading to 1.4.1 was a huge fix to those issues.
Overall, after a lot of work, it is working well, and does play back 100MB/s video extremely well off an xsan volume. Although, I would be fully content if I could get compressor's utilization of the CPU from 40 to 100%.

  • Intel Xserve not using full CPU

When submitting a batch to qmaster, I notice my other g5 machines utilize almost all the processor, and on the intel xserve, all 4 CPUs usually max out at 40% tops. Is this a limitation, to be expected, etc?

Things do look clean - not familiar with all of the Processes, but some of the common "culprits" do not appear. Nice job in keeping these to a minimum. Most people have 60-80 going. Maybe someone else can look down your list and find something that can be eliminated easily for NLE work. I just don't see any potential problems, but remember I do not recognize some of those.
I like the Virtual Memory setting, with only one question: you mention a partition on the RAID 0. Why a partition? The reason that I ask is that Windows first sees your 2 HDD's as one (the RAID), then it sees your partitions as several. If accessing what it now thinks are 2, or more, physical HDD's, it's telling the controller to get the heads in a couple of places at the same time. You probably have a good reason for doing it this way, but it does throw up a yellow flag to me. Having the RAID managed by the MoBo chip is not the fastest/best, but is usually more than adequate. It does save on a US$400 RAID card with multiple channels/chips.
You have provided me, and others, with food for thought. I'll keep looking over your data, but just see nothing, except for the Page File on a partition, that might affect performance.
One test that I'd run would be a slight re-config on your Scratch Disks. I'd do a Save_As, or a Save_As_a_Copy for your Project. Leave your original totally alone. Do a test with the Scratch Disks set to "Same as Project." This will put them on the RAID 0. Then, perform the same operations and monitor the time. Unfortunately, you're investing hours into this, but you might get enough of a performance increase to justify it for future Projects. One way around the time, would be to do a "test" Project with shorter versions of similar Assets. Do all processing on that Project, as configured, and time the results. Do the Save_As, make the changes to the Scratch Disks, and process again. Any difference?
Good luck, and thanks for gathering the data,
    Hunt

  • Intel Xserve Lights Out Management Config Question

When setting up my Intel Xserve I was confused and still am about the way LOM is set up.
Ethernet port 1 uses IP XXX.XXX.XXX.50 for web
Then LOM asked for another IP address on port 1 so I gave it XXX.XXX.XXX.51
How can one port have 2 different IP addresses?
Server monitor connects to XXX.XXX.XXX.51 and all of the other server tools connect to XXX.XXX.XXX.50
    Is this correct?
I use port 2 for internal use. Should I use port 2 for LOM?

    >Thank you and I did read it before. So what I doing is correct?
What you did is valid, yes. correct? maybe not.
Specifically, I'm concerned by the statement:
    >Then LOM asked for another IP address on port 1 so I gave it XXX.XXX.XXX.51
I use port 2 for internal use. Should I use port 2 for LOM?
From your description it sounds like ethernet 1 is used for your public network. This means you've configured LOM in your public network, meaning (firewall aside) anyone can hit your LOM from outside the network, shutdown your machine etc., etc.
I would only ever configure LOM on an private/internal network. There should be no reason to manage LOM from the public network.

  • Intel Xserve panics with 667Mhz RAM

I have an 2x dual core 2.66Ghz Intel Xserve running 10.4.9
    Currently it is running with 2 x 2Gb "533Mhz" ECC DDR2 FB-DIMMs
This it has been stable with and has been running for 5days without any problems.
However if I install into the machine 667Mhz ECC DDR2 FB-DIMMs, then the server panics approx every other day or more. I have tried running with Apple supplied RAM and Kingston (who I believe are a supplier to Apple).
I only fitted the 533Mhz RAM out of desperation to try to get the system stable and it seems to have worked.
Does anyone know if there any issues with running 667Mhz RAM in the Intel Xserves.

Is the RAM module "known good"?
At least before you handled it?
Does it do it with ALL 667s or is this the only one you've tried?
Will it pass a Memory Test when installed? Even when warm?
    My $.02,

  • Mail Crashing only when opening Attachments

I have a friend on the white intel imac, 17" screen, all updated to 10.5.7. Her mail keeps crashing only when opening any email with attachments. I have delete the apple.com stuff and reloaded everything. So that is not the problem. Any other solutions ?

The upgrade to 10.5.7 results in a new version of Mail (version 3.6). It is possible that the upgrade process has resulted in a problem with Mail. To determine if the problem is machine wide or isolated to your current login, try creating another user account with the same permissions as that which you are currently using. Login to that account, open Mail, set up your email account, send yourself an email with an attachment and see when you open it without Mail crashing.
If it does crash then the problem is system wide and I recommend that you download the [Mac OS X 10.5.7 Combo Update|http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_7_ComboUpdate] and install that. It is a large file (730Mb).
If it does not crash then the issue is with the other user account rather than being system wide. A possible solution is to do the following:
    1. Open finder and Move the folder ~/Library/Mail to the desktop
    2. Launch Mail and re-create your email accounts.
    3. Import your old messages via the menu option "File" then "Import Mailboxes".
    4. Select "Mail for Mac OS X", click Continue.
    5. Select the Mail folder from the desktop and navigate to the folder Mailboxes within that folder then click Choose.
    6. You will be presented with a list of pre-selected items to import so click Continue and the import will proceed.
If that works and you can successfully open and view messages with attachments then you can delete the Mail folder that you moved to the desktop in step 1.

  • Intel XServe first impressions

So my first Intel XServes have arrived to to mixed reaction, not all of it good.
To answer other questions that have been banded around, there doesn't look like any option for an internal hardware RAID card. The daughtercard in the XServe G5 to which the RAID card attaches does not seem to be present, at least not with easy connectors to attach the RAID card to, so that one is out.
The next bad news is that the XServe is no longer tool-less. You used to be able to do just about anything a reasonable person would expect just by using thumbscrews. This is no longer the case. The PCIe card slots have vented faceplate in place which are held in by small screws. Therefore you need a screwdriver to add or remove a PCI card. To add insult to injury the screw is not readily accessible, can only be accessed by tilting the screwdriver at an angle, and has a tendency to drop as you remove it, potentially getting lost in the case. Bad move, Apple.
Next comes rails. What a PITA they are. I was hoping that the new rail system would be an improvement over the last. It's not. It is actually impossible for me to rack my Intel XServes in my industry-standard rails. I cannot believe Apple messed this one up so badly. I now need to get a grinder to re-tool the rails so that they will work. Bad, bad move Apple.
What about the plusses? Well, redundant power is nice. Actually including power cables and cable clips for the redundant power supply would have been nicer, though.
Well, that's the first 5 minutes out of the box. Hopefully it gets better from here.

    Next comes rails...
Not sure what kind of rack you have but I found the rails to be some of the best I have worked with. I have spent the last 3 months rebuilding our server room. We use standard round hole racks. I racked 5 XServes in about 30 minutes. The only thing I noticed is there are 2 types of screws that ship with the round screw rail kit. Thread count is the same, but one set is a bit wider.
I did notice that our Dell rails won't fit in the round hole racks as they have a "Tab" that sticks out.
As for the noise I coulnd't tell, we have a ton of the new Supermicro 1U servers and they are so loud I couldn't even hear the XServers Start up.
    For Camelot:
Did your's not ship with power cables? All of ours had both clips and cables. One a standard length and a 12" cable.
I will post more as I get them configured.
