Interactive question DVD creation?

My client wants an interactive dvd produced ie: who wants to be a millionaire - for training use.
Part of the DVD will be a multiple question session with say 3 answer choices - you choose an answer nd it tells you - say a tick with correct and a happy sound or wrong and a unhappy bong!... then advance to the next question.
Can this be done in DVDSP or would it have to be created in a another program such as director (is it still around?) then brought in as a separate part?
Many thanks

quick and easy way (if there isnt hundreds of questions) is have the question in text with the three answer choices as buttons each linked to a separate menu, one for correct answer another for the inncorect answer. A next button will navigate to the next question menu.
Director and Authorware is still very much around, not as popular as Flash these days but you would create a CD ROM not a DVD-Video. Computer based systems provide far better control and authoring opportunities than DVD-Video; point displayed at each stage, final scores given tracking system allows more that one playe and logging in to multiple sessions.

  • Software To Create Interactive Training DVD

I have a new project I am working on. A interactive training DVD. I invision a split screen. One side text or still photos. The other side a video demonstration on the subject matter. There needs to be 2 controllers. The 1st would allow the viewer to advance to the previous or next slide. The second controller would allow the viewer to pause, start, stop rewind the video in the second screen. Additionally, there needs to be a "quiz" at the end of each section. The viewer would be asked several questions. Depending on their response, they would advance to the next section or be taken back to a previous section where the correct response is located.
I think I can do it in FCP & DVDSP. Does anyone have any recommendations or better software suggestions.
Oh yeah, I need to release the final product for use on windows machines.
    Thank you
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

You mentioned DVD is your goal, so your options are extremely limited.
DVDSP or Spruce (which is Windows only and recently aquired by Apple) are really your only choices sub $10k as far as I know.
DVDSP could handle the project, but it would require very good planning and mastery of the scripting environment. You can't save files from DVD, or print pages, or have any serious interactivity beyond navigation scripts. Remember, DVDSP produces DVD's and only DVD's so make sure this is your only delivery medium before moving forward.
Personally, I think this is the kind of thing best suited for an authoring program which is most likely a CD-ROM or Web-based delivery platform. You might see if the DVD thing is set in stone, or if other platforms would be OK.
Macromedia Director is my favorite authoring program. It produces Mac and Windows executable files, not DVD's. Users will have to install Quicktime for Director to display video clips. It's a very powerful program which I use for all of my CD-ROM authoring. I've authored 20+ major CDROM titles including some very nice educational games with this software. It's sort of a container application that holds and displays your content which is often created elsewhere. For instance, I make video clips and fancy transitions in FCP or Motion and place them into the Director Timeline as media assets. Director "directs' the footage and makes everything interactive. I also design the interfaces and graphics in Photoshop, then place them and make them interactive or animated in Director, hence it's designation as the "container". Director 2004 has a very advanced way of communicating with DVD projects and "directing" the DVD footage in ways that DVDSP can't, but I can't recommend this to a novice. It's very advanced workflow.
Macromedia Flash is a more common program, and the latest version has a very nice Video codec so your user will not need to have QuickTime. It makes swf files for the web as well as Mac and Windows Projectors that run off CDROM. In my opinion, Flash is not quite as robust as Director for video and large project management, but that's mostly my own bias. Many people have been able to get amazing work out of Flash.
Macromedia Authorware is another platform similar to Director. I have no experience with this and don't recommend it to a novice.
LiveStage Pro is an older program that uses QuickTime's Authoring language so it's files are actually QuickTime Movs with basic interactivity. It's nice, but the user base is very small and you might have trouble even finding the software.
You could also build the project using Web pages with QuickTime content embeded in a table next to your active text and links. Just load a new page with each section. I use Adobe GoLive to make HTML and recommend it for it's superior workflow with Adobe Applications.
If you don't get a lot more of replies to this topic, you might try the DVDSP forum. Hope this helps.

  • What is the best program for editing and DVD creation?

I am looking for a software that allows me to create a DVD with menus, etc.   I would prerfer to edit in iMovie and export my video to a DVD software.  But if anyone knows of a better editing system with DVD creation possibilities please let me know!

Better is a very subjective term when it comes to editing and personal preferences play an important role. In any case on the Mac you have these choices:
    • Buy iLife with iMovie and iDVD (Amazon, Ebay). This should be able to fulfill most needs.
    • Get Adobe CS 6 with Premiere Pro and Encore DVD. Professional software with a learning curve if you come from iMovie
    • Get Final Cut Pro X. Shouldn't be too difficult to learn for iMovie users but with very limited DVD authoring
Both have trial versions that you can check out. The cost for FCP X is much lower than that for CS 6.
On a side note, there is also Avid but I can't really say much about it having never used it.

  • FCPX DVD export to Compressor: error burning disc; video file incompatible for DVD creation

I've been working on a project for months now (feature film) in Final Cut Pro X. Therefor I have done about 20 exports already from within FCPX to Compressor for DVD. Did the same process last night as always.
From within project timeline I go to SHARE -> DVD -> setup a basic menu then select USING COMPRESSOR
Compressor opens. I click submit and after the progress indicator fills up way too fast, I get this error:
"there was an error burning your disc the video file is incompatible for DVD creation"
DVD spits out and that's it. Compressor and FCPX are both still running and haven't crashed but I'm confused. I have burned since the recent 10.0.3 upgrades (and whichever upgrade just came out for Compressor as well) so I can't imagine it's the upgrade.
    Any ideas?
I tried making a duplicate of the project and renaming and exporting and had the same results.
At this moment I am trying to export to DVD directly from FCPX with default settings and it has bee "processing" with no movemtn on the progress bar for an hour (it's a 2 hour video so this may not be abnormal).

  • IDVD can't process audio - freezes DVD creation

I have created alot of DVDs before with iDVD, but now, during the DVD creation process, it freezes during the 'Processing Audio' stage and won't go onto the burn stage
Any ideas what is happening here?
    Thanks very much
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2 Gig Ram

t freezes during the 'Processing Audio' stage
1st just try waiting. iDVD can appear to hang (spinning beachball) at "audio encoding" but if you wait long enough everything finishes fine. With a MacBook Pro - I think 30 minutes should do it, but wait a few hours just to be sure.
If that still doesn't work make sure you have 16 bit audio, and look back here and search for "audio encoding hang."
Use "Save as Disk Image" to avoid making coasters, and to test your encoded DVD before buring with the Apple DVD player.

  • Best application for Standard Def DVD creation?

I have a bunch of MiniDV tapes shot in standard def that I want to make into DVDs for my family. I want to preserve as much picture quality as possible during the process and will be using transitions, overlays, and credits.
I have used iMovie 08 and abandoned it because I needed dynamic chapter markers. I am now ready to edit the next DVD in the 'series', and with the advent of iMovie 09 and the availability of Final Cut Express at a reasonable price, I am trying to decide which way to go. I also have a copy of iMovie HD 6 which I used for my previous DVD.
From reading the reviews of iMovie 09 I am pretty confident that I would be happy with it functionally, but not if it costs me in picture quality. I noticed on my first effort using iMovie HD 6 and iDVD, that the DVD picture was not as sharp as the video viewed directly from the camera. Did I do something wrong, or is that a "feature" of iMovie? Would FCE be better?
My only concern with FCE apart from spending money that I may not need to spend, is the talk of a steep learning curve. With two little kids at home I don't have a lot of spare time. That said, I'd rather spend the time and get a sharp looking DVD than get a mediocre one quickly.
    Thanks for any advice.

What do you mean by "dynamic chapter markers"?
I meant the ability to define the precise location of the chapter within the movie, such that when exported to iDVD the menu allows you to jump to any point you have defined in the movie. By "dynamic" I mean they may be placed at random locations, rather than fixed intervals. iMovie 08 deleted the ability to add chapter markers, iDVD allows only fixed interval chapters (which seems useless to me), as does Toast. I tried the work-around of using Garage Band, but it fails on larger projects. I've read that iMovie 09 has restored the ability to add chapter markers where you want, but if I'm going to shell out more cash I might as well get the package that will get me the best picture too (within reason).
In any video application, for Chapter markers you simply place them in the application, then edit them in iDVD, DVD Studio Pro, etc.
Not in iMovie 08/iDVD, but now that you mention it, how does DVD Studio Pro compare to iDVD? I'm mostly focused on picture quality.
Do you mean better animated titles that you could use within the program? For this FCE is much better, because you don't need to work with the premade things, you can create and animate your own from the ground up.
That will be fun. Not what I was talking about, but a nice feature. I know that FCE will have lots of capability that iMovie doesn't (by design), that's just gravy.
I have used iMovie HD 6 to place chapters where I wanted them in my last DVD project, I didn't have much trouble working with it although it is a bit more "professional grade" than iMovie (I know, not saying much). How do the two compare for learning curve/user friendliness? I would like to say that I'd get a book to read on FCE but the truth is that on an average day I don't have time to watch the news let alone read a book.
In my opinion, FCE is definitely worth the investment and once you learn it you will never want to go back to iMovie!
Thanks, just the fact that the output is higher quality is a big pull for me. I think I'm going to take the plunge.
Now for the next question: FCE 4 or 3.5?

  • Newbie Question DVD usage

    Hi everyone,
This is my first Apple. So this is a whole new world for me.
I am having some difficulty using the the DVD player in that it won't play them. The error message comes as being an unsupported DVD yet they are store bought DVD's. Titles tried so far: Hackers and Alien vs. Predator.
    Any solutions?

The real question is, in the future, can I take a completed iDVD disc and extract video/audio from it to create a new project or do I need to have the original 8mm tape?
Yes you can with an app like:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.products.htm
but it will lose significant quality. Best to hold on to all source footage /mini dv and hi8 tapes.
Keep the original tapes or move your iMovie to mini dv tape and keep those for future edits. But you will likely lose your chapter markers. Or save your iDVD's in the form of a disc image to an ext. FW HD (less desireable due to the fact you cannot make future edits unless you opt for the above mentioned app).

  • Interactive questions using IP/TV

I am interested in how users can post questions using IP/TV while the presentation is ongoing. What is the process behind this as I don't really see how it works, any kind of insight would be useful.
    Many thanks Alex

When you set up the program, you can (or not) enable interactive "from the field" questions.
The client provide a button that can be pressed to flag the presenter that a field question is pending.
The presenter can then address the questions as possible.
Depending on the scope and location of the audience, you may also consider bringing up a conference bridge for voice-based questions.
    Good Luck

  • JSF Backing bean / JSP interaction questions

A few questions about JSF beans and JSP page interactions. Bear in mind that I'm new to both JSP and JSF, so a solution that might be obvious to the rest of the world may be new to me.
    1. Can I pass a parameter to the backing bean method from an "action" attribute:
    <h:commandLink action="#{TableData.SortRec}">
    <h:outputText value="#{msgs.selectedHeader}"/>
    </h:commandLink>
I'd like to call the same method from several controls, but pass it a parameter to determine which field to sort on.
    2) Is there a way for a backing bean method to determine which control invoked it?
    3) Is there a way to access JSF backing bean methods from JSP tags. I'd like to do some conditional page assembly based on a JSF bean property... JSF doesn't appear to have a conditional like JSP's <c:if>, but I could use JSP's if it could access the JSF bean.

Could you pl tell me how to pass parameter thru CommandButton
    I have the following situation
    1) greetingList.faces which list the Ids & greeting Text
    Id Text
    1 Hello World
    2 Hello World
    2) Pl note Ids are h:commandLink. A click on the Id will render greetingForm.faces with data pertaining to that Id and with Update h:CommandButton
    3) When i click Update button it results in the following error
javax.faces.FacesException: Error calling action method of component with id greetingForm:_id4
    Caused by: javax.faces.el.EvaluationException: Exception while invoking expression #{greetingForm.update}
    Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException
So i verified with h:message that Id is passed as Null when click on Update button. I also checked greetingForm.faces has a not null value by printing <h:outputText value="#{greetingForm.message.id}"/>
So i guess the Id value is overwriteen with null. Also i have defined Id as property in managed bean
    <managed-bean-name>greetingForm</managed-bean-name>
    <managed-bean-class>com.mycompany.GreetingForm</managed-bean-class>
    <managed-bean-scope>request</managed-bean-scope>
    <managed-property>
    <property-name>id</property-name>
    <value>#{param.id}</value>
    </managed-property>
Any pointers/suggestions at the earliest on how to pass the value of Id on a click of update button from greetingForm.faces to greetingForm.java will be highly appreciated
I am willing to upload my war file

  • Newbie Question - DVD Authoring

I am brand new to the Mac and DVD authoring, but so far love it and won't go back to a PC!!!
I have approx. 150+ 8mm/Hi8/Digital 8 tapes to edit and create DVDs from. Do I need to keep the original analog or digital tapes for future projects?
The real question is, in the future, can I take a completed iDVD disc and extract video/audio from it to create a new project or do I need to have the original 8mm tape?
If I can extract from an iDVD disc, how?

  • Captivate 8 - Slide timing & interaction questions

I used to work somewhat with Captivate 3 & 4, and now just got access to Captivate 8 and am currently in the process of evaluating it.  I am hoping someone in the community could help me with the following questions:
    1. Is there a way to add more than 1 action to an interaction?  In other words, I have a button which, when clicked, changes a graphic on the slide using the "Show" action on success.  However, I want to repeat that action to also show a video.  Is this possible?
    2. On the same slide above, I have a total of 5 buttons.  4 of the buttons do what I mentioned in #1, but the fifth button acts more as a navigation button to move to the next slide.  I have a click box inserted for this 5th button with the option "Pause project until user clicks".  However, if any of the 5 buttons are clicked, the slide advances.  Any advice?
    3. I've noticed that "Allow Mouse Click" is greyed out on all actions I've reviewed.  How can I enable this option?
    Thanks!

Thank you, Lilybiri!  Regarding #1, the actions should execute at the same time, rather than in a timed sequence.
Regarding my question 3, I figured it out.  I just have to click into the text field and then hit the key I want on my keyboard (the "Allow Mouse Click" option is no longer greyed out following that).
I see what you mean regarding executing more than one action under Advanced Actions, but I'm having a slight issue.  When I select "Show" for my action and then go to choose what I want to display, I am not seeing the images I want as options (the images are both in the Library and currently on the slide, themselves).  Alternatively, perhaps I am seeing them, but I see options like "Image_15", "Image_16", etc... but I'm not finding those image names anywhere else, including the library.
    Am I missing something?

  • DVD Creation Using Flash

Hi, is it possible to create an interactive DVD/CD using
Flash? I want to be able to insert a DVD/CD into a machine (MAC or
PC), double click the icon and launch a mini program with buttons
such as play, next, etc. Can this be done using Flash only or do I
    require different software?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

Create your working FLASH file as an AIR type...otherwise it
    would require a
browser to see the flash file. Also, for PC users you would
    probably want
a .ini file to launch it.

  • Applet interaction questions

    Howdy.
I'm generating a map in an applet using a library based on swing classes.
I need to be able to:
    -- query the db on the host server from within the applet to alter the map;
    -- save a snapshot of the map to the server (I've got code that saves a snapshot, but I need to be able to save that on the host server);
-- if possible, receive messages from javascript controls on the browser page where the applet resides, and respond to them.
It seems like I may need to sign the applet, but I'm not trying to do anything on the client machine; just to interact with the host server.
Can someone point me in the right direction? I've been out of the java world for a bit, so all the details are slow coming back...
    Thanks much.

    Hi,
I have some questions regarding to the
    HttpURLConnection implementation used in Applet.
    1. Is the connection made when I do
    URL.openConnection or when I flush/close the
OutputStream? The local resources are taken when the openCOnnection is called. The request is made to the server when the getInputStream getContent getResponseCode or the one of the other input methods is called.
    2. Will the binaray data in content be chunked if I
    set the Content-Type to application/octet-stream
    along with Content-Length?Don't know.
    >
    3. After the OutputStream been closed can I still use
the Connection for read?Yup (note you will have to do this to actually send the request to the server...)
    >
    4. Is it possible for me to lose any data in the Http
request I send through the HttpURLConnection? Not sure, but my thought has always been any data sent across HTTP can be lost en route. There will be some effort from the server to recover lost packets, but I do not know the details...

  • Question regarding creation of xml-elements with numerical values

When i create xml-documents from xml stored in the database (xmltype table based on an xml-schema), i find that numerical values which were stored as 0.395 (with the "." as the decimal separator) are retrieved as .395.
Is it possible to apply a format mask so that the numerical value is retrieved as 0.395?
    thanks, Bart
N.b. Note that i select a complete xml-fragment. So my problem seems related to the storage or retreival of 'schredded' XML. I do not use SQL/XML-functions with relational data, in which case i know how to apply a format mask.

I don't use XSLT, i just query the XML-documents stored in an XMLType column with a simple SQL-statement.
I have posted a simple example over here Re: Is it possible to influence the creation of empty elements?
