Interlaced DVD on (Progressive) HDTV....

I recently (finally) upgraded to an HDTV, and maybe I'm just looking for things, or things are simply more noticable, but......
You know how if you export to DV-AVI, and then watch it in Windows Media Player, it looks all horrible because the file is interlaced and WMP doesn't de-interlace it for display on an LCD monitor?
Well, I could swear I'm seeing the same thing on my HDTV. It's nowhere near as bad, and really only appears to happen in areas where there's motion, but it really does look interlac-y in parts.
Am I hallucinating? Seeing things that aren't there? Are my college years finally catching up to me? Or am I seeing something that's similar to, but different, from interlaced video on a progressive screen?
Everything I can find on the net refers to the NTSC standard and regular TVs (i.e. interlaced), and I can't find anything on the fact that HDTVs are progressive, but accept progressive (480p, 720p, 1080p) and interlaced(1080i)? What a rabbit hole.
If details matter:
*Source video is DV-AVI (BFF interlaced)
*I export project pieces to DV-AVI (also BFF interlaced)
*Exported DV-AVI now becomes source for final project
*From PRE, I burn the DVD to a folder (VOB shows MPEG-2, BFF interlaced)
*I burn the folder to DVD using imgBurn
*I play the DVD on a normal, non-upscaling DVD player
*DVD player is connected via Component cable to my HDTV (480p input???)
At some point, I'm assuming the MPGEG-2 interlaced video is de-interlaced, by not sure by whom (DVD player, HDTV?)???

Thanks. I have a Vizio, for whatever that's worth. So basically there's nothing I can do that will affect the de-interlacing quality one way or another.
Just for educational sake... does my DVD player put out 480p (which would mean the DVD player is de-interlacing?), or does it still put out interlaced... what... 480i? It's a low-end, non-upscaling model.
An experiment I haven't tried is playing the DVD through my Xbox. I thought I read somewhere the Xbox would upscale a normal DVD to 720p. But my HDMI Xbox connection is 1080i. So I get a headache thinking what would happen there! :)

Question - What is the best (PAL) workflow to convert HDV interlaced to DV progressive?
Software: Pr, En and Ae - all CS4.
My Camera: (Sony Z1) shoots HDV 1080i.
When capturing and editing, I keep everything HDV and interlaced.
Premiere Pro:
Capture HDV - mpeg 1440 x 1080 (1.3333)
Sequence - 1440 x 1080 (1.3333) HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333) Upper Field First - (HDV 1080i25 Preset)
Once edit is complete, I dynamically link sequences into Encore.
Question - Should I dynamically link to Encore or export sequence from Pro?
If you aren't a fan of dynamically linking the sequences and believe exporting the sequences from Premiere Pro is the way to go, please advise of best export settings. I assume during the export (from Pr) is when the converting from HDV interlaced to DV progressive takes place?
At present, I dynamically link the sequences into Encore. This means Encore handles the conversion to DV progressive.
Question - What are the best (Encore) transcode settings to transcode HDV 1080i25 to DV progressive widescreen?
I've tried numerous workflows but as yet, I've not been 100% happy with any of them.
I'm finding it quite a challenge to take HDV 1080i and produce a good looking DVD i.e minimal artifacts and no interlaced jaggies.
I used to downconvert to DV in-camera during the capture process, but I'm finding I'm getting much better results by editing in HDV and downconverting during post. This is what my post is really all about i.e. finding the best workflow to do this.
I would be very keen to hear of how others are shooting and editing in HDV to then produce best/high quality DVDs.

I have exported the media in DVD MPG (.m2v) from Premiere and Build the final DVD from that .m2v into Encore.
I have to say that I am not very happy with the final result when I convert into PAL Widescreen.
I can see little artefacts, flikers and jaggies...
- Do you think that this "double" DVD MPG export could lower the quality?
- Could it be the FullHD screen (1080x1920) on which I display the final result (PAL 720x572) that interprates the video?

Can you convert Interlaced video to Progressive?

Does anyone know if there is a way to simply convert interlaced video to progressive video? I don't have Apple Compressor, and don't know of any other way to convert interlaced to progressive. Any ideas?

I am clearly not the best person to answer this question...but.
Depending on why you want to change interlaced to progressive, there are several ways to approach this.
There is 3rd party software like the previous offered, and a few others, but if you are simply going to upload to the web or show it on other computers I would just export the movie in a progressive format, using export> Quicktime Conversion. Then select the settings you would like to use.

if you have Final Cut Studio, you can export to Compressor 2 and do your deinterlacing there for higher quality results. it will take much, much longer though.
the settings that have worked best for me are setting the frame controls to "custom" and then:
resizing: fast
output: progressive
deinterlace: best (motion compensated)
check adaptive details
set anti-alias and details levels to 50
rate conversion: best (high quality motion compensation)

How to export HDV interlaced project as progressive?

I have finished my video. It is sitting on my interlaced timeline waiting for export.
The video was shot and edited in HDV 1440 x 1080 i 60. Timeline settings are the same as video settings.
If I export it using Quick Time movie, I will end up with HDV 1440 x 1080 i 60 file with .mov file.
But how can I obtain HDV 1440 x 1080 30 progressive .mov file?

When you Export to QuickTime Movie, you don't have to use Current Settings. You can export to anything, including HDV 1080p30. However, this will merely set the field dominance of the exported movie to "None".
To get a progressive result you'll need to de-interlace your sequence with the "De-Interlace" filter. To avoid filtering every clip in your sequence, Nest your sequence first, then apply the filter to the nested sequence. Option-double-click the nested sequence to load it in the Viewer, then access the Filter tab and try the different de-interlacing options. Flicker Filter (max) gives the smoothest (but a slightly softer) result.
Finally, Export to QuickTime Movie, choosing a 1440x1080p30 preset. ProRes and HDV are your options here. However, only go back to HDV if you're:
a) Exporting back to HDV tape
b) Producing an HD-DVD disc with DVD Studio Pro
c) Needing to keep a relatively small file for archiving purposes
d) Not applying many effects or colour correction filters
If you're going to recompress or treat your sequence further, you'll probably want to export to ProRes 422 as an intermediate format. You'll probably also want to look at the Render settings under Sequence Settings and set the render codec to ProRes 422 for the same reason.
HDV native editing is great for most purposes. However, if you're colour correcting or using heavy effects (like a De-Interlace on every frame!) you can avoid recompression artifacts by rendering and exporting in ProRes.
If you really want the progressive look, try to shoot progressive in the first place. The Canon HV40 will do a great job if you're on a tight budget.

Poweredge R730XD - unable to install Windows Server 2012 standard via DVD - limit progress via USB

Hi all,
hoping someone has encountered and sorted this problem. I've had troubles installing W2012 on our newest batch of server - 4x R730XDs. Either by deployment or booting directly by DVD I encounter the following message:
"windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause"
So I wrote the iso for Windows to USB and booted off that which yielded this message:
"We couldn’t create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files."
A colleague recognised the message and directed me these instructions:
Start DISKPART.
TypeLIST DISK and identify your SSD disk number (from 0 to n disks).
Type SELECT DISK whatever disk number you have.
Type CLEAN.
Type CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY.
Type ACTIVE.
Type FORMAT FS=NTFS QUICK.
Type ASSIGN.
Type EXIT twice (one to get out of DiskPart, the other to exit the command line tool).
It didn't work - the next and final message I have is:
"An Operating System wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system"
As a last resort measure I pulled those disks out but no change to outcome.
I've encountered these issues with 3 out 4 of the servers (I haven't bothered to install the 4th and last).
To summarise the spec of the servers, R730XD - front drives fully populated with 24x 600GB SAS (currently not setup in an array) with additional 2x 300GB in a flex bay at the rear set to RAID1 for OS.
Any suggestions or experiences appreciated.

Hi all,
an update of sorts - we were able to progress futher by setting up a the RAID array for the boot drive inside of the Lifecycle controller (that aspect of LC I have avoided using for a few years due to lack of flexibility in creating multiple arrays). Windows then installed as normal via deployment on 2 of 3 servers. the third still exhibits the same issue. We thought to perform a factory reset, if there such a thing, but am struggling to find such an option in the LC.

Interlacing artifacts on progressive footage in FCP but not when exported?

Hey everyone! Thanks so much to everyone here who has helped me before!
I am trying to edit a music video on my 2GHz Core2 Duo Macbook. I can do everything just fine, but with one little hitch.
The video I am editing was shot DVCPro 1080p 30.
When playing back the raw footage, or playing back my edits in FCP, the video has interlacing artifacts during periods of quick movement, even though the footage was shot progressive. However, when the video is exported, *there are no artifacts upon playback.*
Also, if I open the video in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended, and look at the video one frame at a time, the interlacing artifacts are there!
Anyone have any idea about why this is happening?

To make things more interesting, the interlacing follows a pattern. Three frames of non-interlaced shots, and then two frames of interlaced shots. Consistently.
Could this have something to do with my integrated graphics card?
Like I said, when the video is exported to a different format, the interlacing is gone, even though no deinterlacing was applied...

So... I cannot watch movie on DVD on my HDTV?

With a cable from my MacBook to my HDTV, I can watch a movie on DVD or anything that I to pull up the MacBook. Now, unless I am wrong, I cannot use the setup Apple TV instead of the cable? Reading over what Apple says about the Apple TV, I thought it would be possible to do this, but now, with the Apple TV setup, it looks like I am limited to what Apple wants me to see - YouTube, NetFlix, movies rented from iTunes and not too much more. Especially not TV shows that are on the Internet pages of TV stationss or DVDs. That is a so big a surprise and disappointment because the cable is a a nuisance and did not carry the audio, which I had to use another cable or to speakers or use the MacBooks speakers. Did I read the product information completely wrong or what?
If I am all wrong with this, please tell me how to do this. Thanks.

Yes and no.
AppleTV is limited in the formats it can play natively but very recent Macs (post 2011) running Montain Lion have the ability to Airplay the screen to the AppleTV - that still doesn't work for Apple's DVD player though as it won't mirror protected content.
You could try Airparrot (which has mixed reviews) to do Airplay in software.
VLC might allow Airplay of a DVD.
If you have non-protected video you could convert it to h264 format and add to iTunes, but we cannot discuss circumventing commerical DVD protection.

Urgent! QT conversion automatically turn HD interlace video to Progressive

I try to use quicktime to convert a HD clip to SD. I'm sure the HD clip was interlaced. But after using quicktime conversion to make a SD version, it turn out deinterlaced. I didn't click on the "Deinterlace" option in the QT conversion window. And then I use a SD clip convert again it came out normal. I'm using QT 7.5.5. Is there any ideas? Thanks.

Frankly, the converted one looks better! But this is just a static shot! I think you'll know when it has quick pan, it will look a bit jerky. Especially when the director shot the video by 50i instead of 25p.
My procedure was setup a ProPes 1440x1080 50i project, capture HDV 1080-50i footages via firewire with playback deck setup also 50i. Edit sequence is 50i upper field. After finish editing, output a dvd by the usually way (Upper field, 16:9 Aspect). Found out the dvd was not interlaced and double check field order setting is upper field. Then tried output a upper field SD qt to check still become de-interlaced. Trashed my preferences and no effect. Then I use videos from other old projects still the same. At this moment, I realize its not my capture setting but its the quicktime conversion cause the problem. But ONLY in HD file not SD. SD video is fine and its interlaced.
I have no clue at all. Did Apple has any direct support for users??

Converting Interlaced HDV to Progressive

Hi All,
Am currently preparing a short film for distribution e.t.c. and will need to have the final cut in various formats for different audiences and mediums.
The film was shot using HDV-1080i-60. So it's Interlaced HD Video with a frame rate of 29.97. It's been captured and edited using the HDV1080i60 codec.
I'm having a hard time getting a satisfactory result when converting the video to Progressive HDV with a frame rate of 23.94. I've tried a couple different routes for this, such as
* Creating a HDV-1080p24 sequence in FCP and re-rendering footage with these settings. Resulted in "jerky" motion in final export.
* Converting via JES Deinterlacer. Better results - generally OK, but some shots with camera pans/movement in still seem far too jerky.
I realise that it's going to be incredibly difficult to get smooth motion with the shots that have camera moves in them - since I'm deinterlacing AND changing the frame rate, but at the moment I'm not getting an acceptable result.
Does anyone have any tips for me on this? Any work-arounds or optimum settings I should be aware of? I will continue doing tests and experiment with settings e.t.c. but I could do with some advice!

It's always best to shoot the format you want to deliver in. Changing standards from 29.97 to 23.98 is a risky business. Might want to google for STANDARDS CONVERSION and NATTRESS. Not as good as shooting 24 at the first go 'round, but might be helpful now.
But DON'T just drop it in a 24 sequence and hope for the best. There are better ways. I think even compressor will do a standards conversion for you.

Burning DVD, no progress...

HI, I'm trying to burn a DVD in DVD studio pro 4, it starts, and in the log tab I'm seeing It does Complier initializing pass, Precompiling Project pass, Parsing Assets.
.. and It stops at Encoding Assets... forever. Is it normal?
Why is encoding again my assets when I did it in the Compressor?
All my assets are ac3 and m2v files, already encoded in compressor. Do I have to encode them differently?
My material is 3.1 GB, how long usually takes to encode that in DVD studio pro 4? This is confusing me, I had my compressor encoding the material all night.... and now again...

Man I Installed it on my laptop just to check if it is going to work after I reinstalled it 2-3 times on my G5. I'm audio recording engineer, and since I bought the bundle 2 years ago for the project, used it only for that project. Now I'm trying to do some home video, and I already spent so much time trying to fix what is supposed to work worry free...
No, I'm not using it on two machines, I'm not using it even on one!
Thanks for your response, but that did not help me resolve the issue here. I've been with macs since the quadra NU- BUS, and nowdays they look more and more like a PC. I'm a heavy Pro tools user, with a huge Pro Tools HD 3 accel system, and happens ho have a glitches once in a whille after all that money spent,....

Easiest way of changing ProRes interlaced to ProRes progressive

Hello,
I have captured HDV ( 1080i ) as ProRes to edit it within Final Cut.
Now, when video is done, I would like to leave it in ProRes, but would like to have it in progressive mode.
So I am wondering, what would be the effective way of doing this?

Export a Quicktime Movie from FCP. Take that file to Compressor. Find a ProRes preset that matches what you'd like, duplicate it, then in the Frame Controls tab in the Inspector, change the Output Fields setting to Progressive.

Progressive video into DVD SP

Can you add progressive video to a DVD SP4 project?
I changed a 29.97 NTSC interlaced DV video to progressive video with Compressor 2 and I can't import it in a project in DVD SP 4. The accompanying .ac3 file imports OK.
I'm presuming it won't import because it is progressive video vs interlaced.
Does the DVD spec require interlaced video?

Here is a quick and dirty explanation of why not to make your DVD with progressive video.
This from Jeff Bellune author of:

"The video that is stored on an NTSC DVD-Video disc is stored as 29.97 fps interlaced video. To view the interlaced fields as progressive frames (like through the component outputs of a DVD player that supports progressive playback), the player has to internally de-interlace the video before sending it out. So there is no advantage to rendering or transcoding interlaced source video as progressive if you are going to DVD-Video."

Export QT: Interlaced or Progressive

Hi all,
Wonder if you can help me. When I do an export QT from FCP in DV PAL, I have the option to choose Interlaced or Progressive. Now I 've tried both and both files play OK on my computer. My question is when would you use Interlaced and when would you use Progressive, and why?

Should I de-interlace my DVCPRO HD 1080i timeline before I export to progressive DVD? Should this eliminate the "noise" artifacts in some images? Does this kill my resolution?

Well, if you want a progressive DVD from an interlaced source then some form of deinterlacing is required.

I seriously doubt it... maybe I don't fully understand your meaning here.

Yes. Premiere's deinterlacer sucks. You should have a look at my
HD -> DVD Workflow. Although the "basic" example outlined on the page is for 1080i -> interlaced DVD, the "advanced" workflow referenced at the bottom of the page can do progressive output also -- and will get you much better quality in general.
