Internal temperature monitoring utility?

Is there any monitoring software (similar to Activity Monitor) that detects whether key components such as the CPU and hard-drive are running at a reasonable temperature or are overheating?
I believe that temperature-monitoring sensors are present inside the casing so in theory what I am asking about should be possible.

Hi, KDS-KDS. My experience has been that temperature-reporting utilities such as the one linked by roam above (which I've tested) are only able to find a single sensor in my Tibook, the same generation as yours. That sensor watches only the hard drive, which is normally one of the cooler parts of a Tibook. Though there clearly are additional sensors in the machine, it appears that their output is unavailable to (or perhaps isn't readable by) such reporting software, for some reason. Owners of other Mac models have reported quite varied results, from highly satisfactory (several sensors detected) to no sensors detected at all.
This question came up several times in the Tibook discussion forums a while back, and my recollection is that no Tibook owner, regardless of which of the four generations his machine belonged to, ever found any temp-reporting software that could provide a readout on the CPU. If you do find one, please post in over there and let us know.

  • Temperature monitoring utility - QUESTION

Has anyone else out there run both TempMonitor and CoreDuoTemp at the same time on an (Intel, duh) MacBook? The reason I ask is because I am, and I get drastically different readings from each. Like 64F versus 84F. The same disparity occurs when switching to Celcius units too.
Is there something about running both at the same time that can cuase one (or the other, or both) to not function properly?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Where are temperature monitoring components on K9N Platinum?

Where are temperature monitoring components on K9N Platinum?

Ok it appears that with current systems there is no mbrd mounted CPU temperature thermistor.  There are two thermal sensors inside a K8 CPU: one is a simple thermal diode for use by external circuitry, e.g. a hardware monitor or Super I/O chip and this is the temperature you will see as measured through that monitor chip; the second is used internally by the CPU for software and hardware thermal management so includes the circuitry to translate to a temperature reading.  This second sensor is associated with the THERMTRIP Status register where the diode measured "current temperature" is stored in bits 23-16 (23-14 for Rev G); now in pre-Rev F CPUs that field is documented as "reserved" but it does appear to have the temperature stored in it since Speedfan reads it and reports a valid(-looking) temperature.  So with Speedfan you can get two CPU temperatures reported which behave somewhat differently, probably due to different calibrations of the sensor circuitry.  One is read through the hardware monitor chip; the other is read directly from a CPU register.
What I'd like to know is if there is anything at all under the CoreCell box?  In my system it is certainly not the Winbond hardware monitoring chip which is clearly visible in another area of the mbrd.  Does anyone have a dead mbrd they could rip the CoreCell box off, just so we know what is hidden there?

  • Is my temperature monitor working correctly?

i've downloaded the marcel bresink temperature monitor for my macbook.
before the firmware update, it ran at 67 degrees celsius. after the firmware update, it runs at 40's.
when i restarted my computer few hours later, and loaded up the temperature monitor, it gave me a reading of 29 degrees and even with intensive work (where i can feel the heat and the fan working) the temperature monitor still remained at 29 degrees. right now, it seems to be stuck on 25 degrees. i've changed the preferences so that the sensors are updating the temperatures regularly. i've also tried reinstalling it. is there something wrong or am i not noticing something here?
    thanks guy!
btw, my new macbook is working great!

It's an Intel processor design fault. I got this info from the Hardware Monitor developer.
Q: I have a Mac with an Intel Core Solo or Core Duo processor.
Sometimes, the temperature readings seems to "hang" and are no longer
being refreshed. Is this a problem with the application?
A: No, this problem is caused by an internal design flaw of current
versions of Intel Core processors. The Digital Thermal Sensors may
stop working when the processor returns from a C3/C4 power saving
state. Intel plans to correct this hardware bug for future steppings
    of the CPU.
Intel refers to this hardware problem as Erratum AE18. For detailed

  • Question for anyone who uses temperature monitor

i think my temperature monitor is broken..i had it on my last macbook and it worked fine..but this one says my computer is constantly at 21*Celcius...and i've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it..what is the best temperature monitor?

None of these these temperature monitors are going to work right with the current Intel Duo Core chips. It's an Intel processor design fault. I got this info from the Hardware Monitor developer.

  • Any Temperature Monitor apps working on MBP yet?

I've got a hot MBP like a lot of people here.
Before I call Apple, I wanted to quantify just "how hot" it is, but Temperature Monitor 3.3 "can't find a sensor" when it launches. Their product page states that they don't "fully support" MBP yet but will soon.
So. Any other way to get the internal temp reading until Temperature Monitor gets updated?
    Thanks

Hardware monitor 3.4 (Marcel Bresnik Software
Systeme) is a Universal Binary. It gives me pretty
accurate temperatures. At the hottest, my MBP
records temperatures at about 117 degree Fahrenheit.
It is pretty hot to the touch, but since I survived
summer temperatures that hot as a kid, it isn't
extreme. Don't know how this compares to a PB; my
    other machines are iBooks.
Do you consider this very hot or normal operations. After about 2 hours of continuous use (mostly web surfing) my wife's 12" PB is showing 113degF processor topside and 133degF graphics processor temps. It does not appear to be running any more than normal temps to me. Just trying to get a benchmark for my comtemplated MBP purchase.

  • Is it possible to transfer the temperature readings through "Serial I/O" port of Lakeshore temperature monitor?

With this monitor, you can have 2 analog outputs that you can transfer to the computer by using DAQ boards. In my case, I need temperature measurements at 3 different locations so I need 3 analog outputs, which is not possible with this device.
However, the monitor can also store temperature data in its memory and print the data. What I need is not to print the data but send the data to the computer somehow in digital form and postprocess it. I am using the "serial I/O" port to connect the device to the computer. I think I can do some configurations on the temperature monitor with the drivers in the link (http://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/niid_web_display.download_page?p_id_guid=0241DD1B3AAF0341E0440003BA7CCD... ) but I am not sure if the device recognize the commands that I send through the I/O port.
Any advice on how to transfer (in digital form) the stored data on the monitor to the computer?

    http://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/niid_web_display.download_page?p_id_guid=0241DD1B3AAF0341E0440003BA7CCD...
and the temperature monitor is the one in this link: http://www.lakeshore.com/products/cryogenic-temperature-monitors/model-218/Pages/Overview.aspx
Actually, it says in the manual that the stored data can be send to either printer or they can be retrieved by the computer interface. However, there is not enough information about how to perform this task.
I am using labview to read the data for the analog outputs and the drivers in the first link are also in labview language. But with those drivers, I cannot retrieve the data to the computer.
I will check MAX to test the communication with the device, though. Thanks for the advice!

I need an application or console command that will show me the temperature of my CPU.
I'm running a Beige G3 that is using a G4 processor. It's running OS 10.3.9 through the use of the application xPostFacto. I've found the apps "Temperature Monitor 4.8" and "Hardware Monitor 4.8," but those don't support any Mac OSs below 10.4.x. Temperature Monitor 4.7 supports Mac OS 10.3.9, but I can't find a download of it for the life of me. All of the links redirect to version 4.8.
Please, any help would be much appreciated, my project is at a stand still until I can find something that works.
    Thanks!

Click on my TMM name at left & send me an email. I'll send you the 10.3 version. Don't know if your Mac has the sensors to monitor the temps.

  • Temperature Monitor Alert:Memory controller heatsink Results!!!

    Hello all...
I have a question about the Memory Controller Heatsink sensor in the temparature monitor and I would appreciate it if you could shed any light in my problem.
Well it was long time since I checked my temperatures on my G5 DP 2.3 so yesterday while I was into some MP3 encoding I heard the fans making alot of noise ,not something unbearable but not the usual silence behaviour I was used to even under heavy load and with the nap off.
So because of that noise I decide to check it with the temperature monitor but nothing unusual came up except...yes you guess it the Memory Controller heatsink.
An alert came up and inform me that the temp was over 75 C/167 F.
The threshold was by default at 75 C/167 F.
Let me add that it's summer here and a hot one at 37 C and the room is not airconditioning, but it was exactly the same one year ago(June 2005)and I never came up with an alert.
Also I have no problem with the rest indications.
So what do you think is it normal or may I have a broken fan?
And finally what is the Memory Controller Heatsink?
    Thanx in advance!

The memory controller heatsink is shown, with the associated cooling tubes and fins, in the right-hand photo of the 'back' of the main logic board here
    http://homepage.mac.com/jerrycube/jerrycubepix/22601bluebord.jpg
Air is pulled over the back of the main logic board and through the cooling fins, by the fan in a plastic housing, at 90deg to all the other fans, behind the hard drives.
This fan is called "Main Logic Board Backside" by Hardware Monitor in this ancient DP2.0 - and is showing "20%" in 22deg C room temperature. "Memory Controller Heatsink" is at 54deg C.
37deg C is above the specified max. 'Operating Temperature' of 35deg C shown here
    http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G5_Late2005.html
I think it would probably be advisable to find some way of lowering the temperature of the room the G5 is in...

  • Temperature monitor lite

temperature monitor lite has detected the SMART sensor on my 1.83 mbp... can anyone tell me what temperature range is "normal" for my machine?
    thanks in advance.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

i know the whole heat thing has been done to death, but i was still hoping somone would humor me. i couldn't find a "normal" range listed in any other thread, or i wouldn't have posted.
and actually, sadly, my mbp isn't running just fine. among other issues, when it runs hot, my fan spins up and then down right away... i know, i know... the infamous "moo" has also been done to death. but before i send my machine away for service for two weeks (two weeks! an eternity) i thought a comparison with other users' experiences would be prudent...
    anyone?

  • New MacPro: Good temperature Monitor Application for the nMP?

Can anyone suggest a good temperature monitoring application they have used for the new Mac Pro?
    Thanks

I would recommend iStat Menus (http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/). I switched to it when I got the Mac Pro 2013 because Hardware Monitor doesn't work with the new Mac Pro. It's pretty good, although the history is only visual with graphs showing the evolution of the different sensors temperature. With Harware Monitor it was possible to read the temperature that were recorded at a certain point in time.
