Internet connectivity trashed by AirPort 5.5.3 update?

We have two Macs at home. First one (used by my son) lost all connectivity some 2 weeks ago and now my MacBook Pro lost all connectivity after updating to airport 5.5.3. All connectivity means WiFi, Ethernet cable and 3G via a modem dongle do not work. We tried with 3 different WiFi networks (Internet working fine with other computers, different modem manufacturers) and various wired networks but no luck. I spend two days trying to rectify the problem (removal of the AirPort, cleaning passwords from key-chain, making sure com.apple.mDNSResponder files are OK, tracing problem with tools available on Mac, resets to all h/w components). I now reached a point where router and DNS IP addresses are correctly set via DHCP, Network Diagnostics shows green lights across all (AirPort, AP Settings, Network Settings, IPS, Internet and Server) and says that "Internet appears to be working correctly". However, no Internet can be reached by any application. I can ping the router OK, but no response from outside world.....(switching firewall does not help either).
This looks like a major failure from apple and I am surprised that no information, even acknowledgement is given, not to mention some infomormation on how to fix it or when a fix might be available.
Does anybody has experienced similar problem and perhaps has a solution that works?

All connectivity means WiFi, Ethernet cable and 3G via a modem dongle do not work.
Airport Utility is used only to configure an Airport base station. If your 3G modem isn't working, that has nothing to with Airport or your network.
I suggest you start by deleting the file /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist. Then reboot and recreate your network settings.

  • Internet connection loss using Airport Extreme and Netgear DG843

    Hello,
I am accessing internet via a Netgear DG834 router (not wifi), connected to an Airport Extreme base station. Most of the time, I can access internet through the Wifi network of the AEB without any problem. But around once a day I am experiencing connection loss and the only way I found to restore it is to reset the Netgear Router by physically unplungging it.
Both the Netgear and the AEB have up to date firmware, so I suspect some kind of problem in my setup, as I am not an expert in setting up networks.
Is it possible that using a Netgear Router connected to the AE (which is also a router if I understand correctly) could cause connection problems ?
I am at a loss, and do not even know how to describe the relevant informations of my current setup. If a kind soul could help me nonetheless, I would be very gratefull.

    Yes.
Ensure that that the AEBS is configured to not distribute IP addresses.
Also ensure that the AEBS is on a different channel to the DG834G.

  • Sharing my internet connection TO an airport extreme? How can I do this..

    Hi,
My Mac Pro is connected directly to my modem on Ethernet port 1 (Eth-1).
The connection is solid and my Mac Pro can browse the internet.
What I am now trying to accomplish is to share my internet connection with my family who is using an Airport Extreme Base Station.
    My setup is as follows:
Modem --> Mac Pro on Ethernet 01.
Inet Sharing on Mac Pro via build-in airport card == Wifi, works.
Inet Sharing on Mac Pro via Ethernet 02 --> AEBS WAN Port == Wifi & cabled connections do not work.
How can I get my AEBS to accept this shared connection, using this shared connection as the source for the internet that is being shared from the AEBS to both, Wifi and Cable, connected clients?
The reason for this setup is that normally my family has their own modem & isp which connects to the AEBS but the modem has broken and it will be a week until the replacement arrives so I need to share my connection with them until then.
The distance between my shared wifi and their AEBS is too far, which is why only having the working wifi is not good enough.
Any help would be much appreciated as I have spend the last 2 hours trying all kinds of configurations to no avail.
    Thanks for reading,
    Jannis

    Hi,
I currenly have a DSL modem that is a router as well and is WiFi able.
This gives me one LAN with no subnets as there is no other routing device.
Previously I had DSL modem that did DHCP (Issued IPs) but did not do WiFi so I had a Wifi Router, which also did DHCP by default. This is two overlapping subnets (modem > Router > Computers(s) AND Router > Computer)
Because the WiFi router is effectively fairly dumb it passes on any routing info from the modem.
This means the computer(s) get two IPs although System Preferences > Network can only show one.
What I did was set the DSL Modem to not do DHCP.
The Router then needs the IP of the Modem (Gateway), the DNS servers, the Subnet Mask entered in the boxes that usually appear for Static Routing. You also need to tell the Router to use on IP that is in the range the Modem is using.
This stops the overlapping subnets and makes the LAN more Linear.
Modem > router followed by Router to Computers(s)
Now your Mac Pro is taking the place of a Router and arguably a WiFi Base Station.
    Re 1)
If Internet Sharing is set to do Ethernet (from Modem to Mac Pro) to Wifi I can't see that it can be set to do Ethernet (1 as you call it) to Ethernet (2) to get to the Airport Base Station.
I take it the Airport Base Station cannot "See" the Mac Pro's Wifi ?
Ideally it should be set to Bridge (Off) Mode - Not doing DHCP) so that it extends the range of the Mac Pro's WiFi network.
    Re 2)
If the Base Station was in Bridge Mode then all the other house's computers would get IPs from the Mac Pro's subnet.
If it is Sharing an IP then they get their own Subnet from the Base Station.
Depending on what range the Mac Pro Uses and the Base Station is set to, you may get conflicting IP addresses.
To a certain extent Subnets can be useful as long as they are separated properly and Linear.
    Consider it this way.
The Postal Service uses House numbers and street names in overlapping subnets to deliver mail.
The White House (as computer) is in Washington (router) which is in the USA
Now think of a house on a corner plot. Before city planners or postal service gets their hands on it it possibly could be considered to be house 30 Main Street as well as house 1 Side Avenue. Technically a letter could be addressed to either 1, Side Ave or 30, Main Street, Imaginary Little Town.
On the other hand the upstairs of you house is part of that house (in the same LAN) However it can only be accessed by the stairs (Separate, linear Subnet).
Certain apps can deal with/ignore overlapping subnets but others need the set up to be more linear. (iChat and other IM apps are one sort)
I hope this helps some more.

  • Wireless connections drops after AirPort Extreme 2007-001 Update

Hello, I am getting a lot of wireless connection drops since I installed the AirPort Extreme 2007-001 Update. Anyone has similar issue? Any fix?

Well, I was conneting to the University's wireless server (which is maintained and huge) flawlessly prior to the update. My friend has a macbook pro and didn't apply the update and he has no problem. I installed the update and since then I'm having a hard time connecting to ANY wireless server/router.
I came across the following, looks like a lot of other persons are having the same issue:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070202141024604
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070126190822382
Looks like my solution would be to perform an Archive & Install and to not reinstall the AE 2007-001 update.

  • Internet Connection Not via Airport Express

I have a iMac connected to the internet via a DSL modem upstairs and an airport express downstairs connected to the stereo with the ethernet port turned off. It works fine for itunes. The airport express is configured as a base station and is using the 10.0.1. subnet. When I use an ibook to connect to the wireless network, I can see the iMac and transfer files, mount locations etc. fine, but I cannot get to the internet from the ibook. How do I configure the base station so that the ibook can get to the internet via the iMac, which uses a different IP assigned by the ISP.?

I have a iMac connected to the internet via a DSL
    modem upstairs
I assume an ethernet cable from modem to iMac, right?
    and an airport express downstairs
connected wirelessly to the iMac on the different network created by the Express, right?
    How do I configure the
base station so that the ibook can get to the
internet via the iMac, which uses a different IP
    assigned by the ISP.?
The Internet IP can be shared from iMac's ethernet to it's Airport via System Preferences/Sharing/Internet. Then the Express would need to connect to the iMac as a client which would continue to work for AirTunes but since the iMac sharing can't be a WDS Main Station the iBook wouldn't work.
The best strategy is to connect the DSL modem to the Express and then connect both the iMac and iBook wirelessly. That probably re-arranges where your stereo gets AirTunes so buy another Express or better yet an Extreme Base Station!

  • Internet Connection Issues between Airport & Cable Modem

I'm posting this because I couldn't find a similar answered question here, and I hope to save someone else the grief I went through trying to get my wireless network working.
Bought an Airport Extreme to connect to my non-wifi cable modem. The Airport had no difficulty setting up the network, and all of our computers and wireless devices were able to connect to the network. Unfortunately, none of them could connect to the internet.
The problem turned out to be that you need to edit the default network configuration to add the DNS server addresses of your cable provider. As soon as I did that, all the devices had internet. As far as I can tell, the settings live on the modem, but are not picked up by the Airport in quick setup process.
I hope this saves someone else a trip to the Apple store or a long support call.
    Ricka

Bypass the router and connect your computer directly to the modem.
Make sure that you can access the Internet when you connect the computer directly to the modem.
If you can access the Internet through the modem then try to configure the router manually.
Connect the modem to the Internet port and computer to Ethernet port on the router. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Now try to reconfigure the router manually.
Follow this link to configure the router with CABLE Internet service.

  • Shared internet connection (PC to AirPort) is verrry slow and erratic

I have a 2.4GHZ iMAC (10.5.6) with a PPPoE connection to a DSL modem. I've set up internet sharing with AirPort. When I go to a nearby PC laptop I can connect (wirelessly, of course) to the internet, but the connection status is very erratic.
Speeds vary from 1Mbs to 36 Mbps, signal strength from "poor" to "excellent". (The laptop is stationary).
I can't believe that the AirPort "hotspot" would be so poor, so I'm thinking there must be something wrong on the PC side (Dell 1525, Vista). Any suggestions??
Until recently, I had a Netgear router connected on the WAN side to the DSL modem, and the iMAC on a LAN connection. And the PC connection to and through the router was excellent. Why should AirPort be so poor relative to the router? (Incidentally, it's an old dumb modem: Westell InfospeedDSL.)
At my (limited) wit's end ....

Hi & a warm welcome to the forums!
Quite often getting them direct is far better than SU, this works on my Dialup asccount most times...

  • Is is possible to use a netgear wireless router to share a cable internet connection between an airport express and a Sony BD player?

    Hi,
I have a couple of netgear wireless routers (WGR614, WPN824 v3) as well as a Belkin wireless router (F5D8233-4v3) lying around, and was wondering if it is possible to use any of these to share the internet feed from a cable modem to both an airport express and a Sony Blu-Ray Player?  I connected the WPN824 router between the cable modem and the airport express but the airport express will only give an orange light then as if it does not have internet access.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Many thanks.

What you are basically attempting to do is extend the Belkin router with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) via a wireless connection between them. This method is known as a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Unfortunately, WDS is not a standard and router manufacturers implemented, in most part, to only work with their products ... so it will be very unlikely that you can create a WDS between your Belkin and the AX. There have been a few Belkin model that have been updated by third-party firmware that support WDS, but the models you listed are not any of them.

  • Loss of Internet Connectivity when Using Airport

I have my Airport Express talking to my wireless Dlink DI514 router for iTunes. This worked great for several months, but all of a sudden I am having problems connecting to the internet.
I spoke to comcast, and they see no problems in my area - they said it could be a router issue. Later I noticed that I only have problems connecting to the internet when I am using my Airport express to play music on my stereo system (which is most of the time).
Has anyone had this kind of problem before? Could it be that my router has gotten sick and can't handle iTunes and connecting to the internet simultaneously? I'd have posted this question on the Dlink site, but I don't see any message boards there. Any ideas?
    Dell   Windows XP

Ensure that your AirPort Express (AX) is configured as a wireless client of the D-Link. The instructions are in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • I lost my internet connection on my airport extreme and can't reconnect

After a power outage I lost my network connection and my base station  and I can't reconnect. I don't know what to do. I went to airport utility but it can't find my devise. What am I doing wrong?

Temporarily, connect a spare Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme.
Power down both the Mac and AirPort Extreme, then restart them.
Open AirPort Utility to see if communciation has been re-established.
Once  you have made any adjustments and Updated,  you can disconnect the Ethernet cable.

  • Slow or NO internet connectivity after Mac OS 10.5.6 update

    Hello,
I have a regular home network, i am using a 2WIRE modem, to connect to my internet. Ever since i installed this update, my internet has been running very slow, i have tried using different browsers, and i also contacted my ISP.
This is becoming really frustrating, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Noah

    Hi Noah,
Is your connection slow, or is web browsing slow? I would try downloading a file from a prominent website. if the download goes quickly, but web browsing remains slow, that will help pinpoint the problem.
i recently had a very slow time browsing myself. each web browser i tried, safari, firefox, opera, would take a long time to "Contacting..." or "Looking up..." in the status bar. If this is what you're experiencing, you may want to look into your DNS settings. Use the following link and add the 208... DNS to your airport settings:

  • Internet connection via Airport Extreme/router thats not working, why?

I have been having problems with the internet connection via Airport Extreme which I find it a bit unusual and its still driving me nuts! This is what happened:
I have lost my internet connection last Sunday evening upon my return from a weekend away from home. The last time I have used the internet connection on my macbook was the previous Friday morning. Prior to the apparent disconnection on Sunday, I have always used my internet connection wirelessly through Airport Extreme (that is connected via ethernet cable to the NETGEAR DG834v2 ADSL modem which had worked beautifully until the problem arose on my return). This wireless internet connection allowed me to surf the internet anywhere in my home.
However, upon the successful re-connection to the internet via the modem router, I have discovered several new problems. I have tried to set up the internet connection wirelessly again but instead the following happened:
    1. Router (Netgear) drops ADSL connection and cannot reconnect when connected to airport via Ethernet. (which is the case when using airport wireless).
    2. Router connects to ADSL fine when computer is connected to it via Ethernet. (However, router disconnects when magsafe power adapter is taken out for some inexplicable reason!)
    3. Router connects to ADSL fine when nothing is connected to the router (ie. No Ethernet connections)
    4. Router connects to ADSL fine when connected to airport via Ethernet and computer is connected to airport via Ethernet.
So from the above, I cannot connect to the internet properly whether wirelessly or not so I suspect it could be faulty router or could it be airport extreme? I have asked my ISP for an explanation and all they have said is that it cannot be the mis-configuration but could be to do with the power adaptors or the way plugs are set up and suggested I take out all the power plugs (and power surge protector) out to switch everything off, the macbook, router, printer and airport extreme. However, when I have re-plugged them all back in, the problems I have described above still persists!
Would appreciate any help if anyone here recognises why this is the case and what seems to be the cause of this. If so, what should I do? Though I have written back to my ISP again yesterday for more help so im waiting to hear from them...
    Thanks

  • Airport network and sharing Internet connection

    Hello all,
I have hit this problem with sharing an internet connection on an airport network. Maybe its a simple fix, maybe it a "can not be done", answer.
My set up may be a little hard to describe. To explain, completely wireless set up in my network, 1 x imac and 1 x powerbook, all on airport and using an airport express. This includes my new printer. All connected through airport express network, call it network A.
Up till now i had a modem with an ether net cable plugged into the airport express. All was fine.
I am in jakarta, the cable internet providers here are hopeless, slow connection speed.
Last month a new wireless internet service was released. Called 3.5 G. Its lightning fast and reliable. Basically you get a wireless USB modem attach it to your computer and you are always connected to the internet wirelessly. You can travel anywhere with it. The 3.5G is primarily for mobile phones but i use it just for internet. This modem is connected to my powerbook and works great.
Now, the useless cable internet connected to my airport express is still connected for my Imac to use.
My problem is that i would like to share my high speed internet connection from my laptop to my imac. Problem is that when i allow sharing from my laptop, the intenet works fine on both machines but on the powerbook, which is doing the sharing you get an arrow symbol through the airport icon at the top.
The laptop can NOT access the local airport express network A. Hence i cannot use the printer or see the imac. That is my problem, i cannot print from the powerbook unless i stop sharing. When you share an internet connection the sharing computer seems to create another computer to computer network and does not join the existing arirport network.
This is probably a little confusing. Hopefully, someone may have some ideas. My alternative is to buy a new fixed position modem/router for the 3.5G system. Its about $600. Ouch.
    Any ideas
    thanks for the interest.
    joe

    Selamat Phil Smith,
Actually do we know each other, cause i know a phil smith.
Actually an ether net cable is OK for the short term. But if i get another computer it may get complex. Spent a lot removing cables too.... Looks like i will have to buy the special modem router... Painful $600.
This share internet thing over airport looks like a great idea till you realise it disables access to the ariport network for the computer doing the sharing.
Cheers and thanks for the idea
    joe
