Internet download speed slows to 20% of normal every night at about 8:30 P.M. Pacific Time

My internet download speed, which averages just over  5 Mb/s most of the day, slows to about 1 Mb/s every night at about 8:30-9:00 P.M. Pacific Time and lasts for a few hours.  It is consistent and constant so random equipment or line problems are unlikely.  I've saved the results of my speed tests (speedtest.net) as to evidence the problem and posted them below.
Please help.

Looks and sounds like the usual case of congestion during prime time hours. Have you tried asking Verizon to change the circuit or edge router your DSL line connects to, in order to solve the problem? Often times there seems to be an imbalance in how circuits are loaded on Verizon's DSL network. It's a rather typical experience for a shared medium (such as DSL, Cable) but steps can be taken to try and balance off load periodically. Verizon should have some free circuits available that will allow you to reach your speeds during the night time hours.

  • My macbook internet download speed is extremely slow. I have tried other computers both windows and mac on the same line and speeds are normal. What is the problem?

My macbook internet download speed is extremely slow. I have tried 2 other computers, another mac and windows and the download speed is over 10mb but with this macbook pro it is less than 1mb. What is causing this and how to fix?

To find out how much space you have & what is left, open up Disk Utility/Machintosh HD/First Aid.  The info will be at the bottom of the window.
Sluggish Finder - Bunch of icons on your desktop?  An overcrowded desktop slows down your Mac.
Get rid of needless Finder calculations - Open a window in Finder/View/Show View Options:  ensure "Calculate All Sizes" option is unchecked.
Internet related - It's likely that your broadband connection is the bottleneck.  You can check your speed on http://www.speedtest.net to see how fast your connection is.  If your web browser specifically performs slowly, quit and relaunch it.
If browser remains sluggish, empty its cache.
    Safari/Empty Cache
Firefox/Preferences - select the Network tab of the Advanced preferences and click the "Clear Now" button in the "Offline Storage" area.
Application related - Launch "Activity Monitor" - Applications/Utilities - click the CPU heading and see what float to the top.  If an application takes up a large chunk of CPU and won't let it go, it could be dragging down your Mac's performance.  Quit it by clicking the Quit Process button at the top of the Activity Monitor window.
Too little ram - max out your ram.
Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

Even the 'respected' tools like Onyx, if you look at what (each and every update) states in the "what is new" and changes will be to improve compatibility.
Never use or install anything (and I include OS X updates in that category) without cloning your system and having TimeMachine that is current, and backup(s) that will be off line.
Some cannot be trashed or deleted or removed without using an "uninstall app" or the installer, doing so without can mean having to reinstall first.
Or wipe the drive and restore from a known good backup set.

  • My internet download speeds very slow

Dear Sir or Madam:I changed my cable service plan on 3/6/2015. Internet download speeds should be 25Mbp/s.   Unfortunately, Comcast never support this kind of download speeds rate to my service requested rate. I checked the download speeds rate ever day, without 3/6/2015—3/9/2015, the download speeds rate reached 5Mbp/s, otherwise, until now, there are no any one day , the download speeds rate up to 2mbp/s,   sometime even download speeds is zero 0 bp/s ; most time download speeds only around 100Kbp/s. or under 100kbps.I bought new Gateway model Motorola SBG6580 that is working perfectly. I checked cable connection is good.I paid for 25mbps download speeds rate. Comcast given me only at 100kbps download speeds rate. This is too much overly fault service, I can’t accepted.I hope Comcast fix the problem immediately.  Thank you.

    I am getting 1.2MB currently.
    Sometimes I get lot more.
    I understand technically why you
    think Apple resolution would put
    more demands on bandwidth.
    1080P for my TV.
As I said this worked for other
    apple movie rentals in past.
I have been using same Dsl
    service for many years.
I know you are going to say that
    my bandwidth is too slow.
    Which Dsl customer gets 6MB?
How much do they pay each month
to get that kind of bandwidth.
I pay $80/mo and get 5 IPs which
    I need.

  • Low internet download speed when on battery (have tried previously given fix)

There is a drastic fall in internet download speeds when laptop is running on battery power. As soon as I plug it in, the internet speeds return to normal.I have already changed the wireless settings to high performance in the power management profile. How do I solve this problem?Any help is appreciated. Also, my laptop is only a couple days old.

Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. I have looked into the issue you are having with Battery Performance and I found a couple of documents for you to try.  The first document I found is called HP Notebook PCs - Managing Power Options (Windows 8). In this document it shows you how to create your own Power Plan.  The second document I found is called HP Notebook PCs - Testing and Calibrating the Battery (Windows 8). You can test and calibrate the battery to make sure that it is not an issue with the battery itself.  Please follow these provided troubleshooting steps, re-post and let me know how everything went. Thank you! Have a great day!

I started downloading a rental movie on apple tv, but I live in a rural area with terrible Internet download speed...is there anyway to stop the download, and resume downloading, onto my iPad when I have access in an urban setting with high speed Internet?

Yes, to be honest I was a little surprised myself. But it absolutely didn't connect when plugged into the test socket (I even tried to force a connection from the Home Hub manager but it wasn't having it). It is definitely the master socket. The only extension is a small piece of (engineer installed) phone cable to link the hub and the master socket (because the socket and mains power are unhelpfully on opposite walls of the hallway).
I ran the Java download for Google anyway and it only took about an hour. The speedtester results are as follows:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 109 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :2560 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
I don't as a rule disconnect / reboot the hub; today it has been dropping off on its own, while several days ago I tried a few reboots just to try and get a connection.
Additional info - my exchange is actually called Claypole Fenton (or vice versa). Whatever, my profile has probably been welded to 135k for days and days.
    Cheers
    Nick

  • IPhone 4s internet download speed super slow after iOS 7.1

I've been experiencing very slow download speed over wifi on my iPhone 4s and my iPad 2 after installing iOS 7.1 It's very frustrating because all other wireless enabled devices at home are working fine. My internet speed is 10Mbps download and my iPhone and iPad are only getting 0.01Mbps on average after iOS 7.1, which is really stupid. I've never experienced anything this frustrating with my iOS devices. Can anyone suggest a fix for this? I really need your help guys...

Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)
If this doesn't help, back up and restore via iTunes. If the problem continues, restore as a new device and test. If the problem is solved, there is some kind of corruption in your backup file or maybe it's one of your apps causing problems. If it continues, take it to an Apple Store for evaluation of a possible hardware problem.

  • Using Speedtest, all my iOS 7.1 devices are showing slow internet download speeds on my home WiFi network.

I have four iOS devices, an iPad Air, an iPhone 5S, an iPhone 4, and an iPad2.  All but the iPad2 are running iOS 7.1.  The iPad2 is still iOS 7.0.4.  I am only getting 1mbs download speeds with the iOS 7.1 devices.  The iPad2, as well as my Windows 7 laptop on the same WiFi network, are getting a full 15mbs download speed using the Ookla Speedtest.  I have tried resetting the wireless router, as well as resetting the network configurations on the iOS devices, rebooting the devices, etc., but the slow speeds persist.  While I can't definitively tie the issue to the iOS 7.1 upgrade, I distinctly recall running speedtests on the iPad Air in the past, and getting 15mbs.
    Any troubleshooting suggestions?

Thanks for the reply, Jim.  I double-checked my wireless router settings against the recommendations in the link you provided.  Only one setting was different.  I had the 2.4GHz channel width set to auto, and the recommendation is 20MHz.  I made this change.  The 5GHz channel is disabled on my router.
After the change, I got mixed results.  My iPhone 5S now gets over 15Mbs, but my iPad Air gets less than 1Mbs.  My iPad2, as well as my laptop, continue to get over 15Mbs.  I don't think the issue is with the router configuration at this time.  Any other suggestions?

  • Airport download speed SLOW!

I am having what I have found to be a common issue (from searching Mac forums)with Airport speeds on my Mac Pro. I am getting very slow download speeds with on my Airport Express network, however my upload speed is normal. I have 2 Mac laptops on the network, both receiving 2.5 to 2.8 mbps download speeds while the Mac Pro, 3 feet from the Airport, downloads between 300 and 1000 kbps. All computers are configured the same, and everything is working fine on the network, including the 2 laptops and an Xbox 360. Only the Mac Pro is experiencing problems.
Upon first hooking up the computer, it worked fine, but later in the day developed a problem with connecting to the network. A clean re-install fixed the problem, however, after a week or so, I am having the speed issue. While I was once able to stream music and video and use wireless printing from the Mac Pro, it is now too slow.
Furthermore, when selecting the airport icon from the menu bar, the computer hangs for a couple of seconds before opening the menu. Is there a solution to this problem? I have been unable to find a solution on the internet, yet I have read of several similar and identical problems with Intel-Macs.

After a lengthy walk-through with an Apple Tech, we were able to fix the problem by power-cycling the Airport and Modem, erasing my network (in the Airport settings in Network Preferences) on the Mac Pro and re-adding it to the Preferred Networks, removing all cables from the Mac Pro, waiting 20 seconds, reattaching cables and then zapping the PRAM (apple, option, P, R) after the chime on start-up. Seems to be working fine now, hope it lasts!

  • Internet Connection Speed SLOW!

    My Set-up...
2012 MacPro 3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon running Mavericks 10.9.5
    Airport Extreme Base Station -  Card Type: AirPort Extreme  (0x14E4, 0x8E) - Supported PHY Modes: 802.11 a/b/g/n - Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.106.98.100.22)
    Modem - NEW Arris DOCSIS 3 CM820
Suddenlink High-Spped Cable (up to 50Mbps advertised in my area)
MackBook Pro 17" 2011 Model running Yosemite 10.10.2
Here is my problem. Last week Suddenlink increased the minimum bandwidth in my area to 50Mbps from 15Mmbps. They said I would need to upgrade to a DOCSIS 3 Modem to be able to take advantage of that speed increase however, so they sold me a new modem (Arris CM820) which I hooked up today.
I ran a Speed-Test at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ both with my old Motorola Modem just before I disconnected it, then ran the test again after I upgraded the modem. I am connected to BOTH my PowerMac 2012 and my MacBook Pro 2011 via the SAME WiFi Network Base Station (Airport Extreme). My older MacBook Pro immediately showed a HUGH Speed Gain when running the speed-test, but the MacPro "download speed" actually went DOWN??? What could cause this?
    Mac Pro:
Before: 17.48 Mbps Download | 1.59 Mbps Upload
After: 3.32 Mbps Download | 5.37 Mpbs Upload
    MacBook Pro:
Before: 17.32 Mbps Download | 1.52 Mbps Upload
After: 49.36 Mbps Download | 5.58 Mbps Upload

As far as your configuration goes, I do not see anything strongly out of whack. You may want to set IPv6 to link-local only (both here and on your Macs) since it is not yet used for most Home Networks (but may be used by Bonjour Service Discovery). It seems unusual that your Airport Admin port (50.27.113.156) is set to a "real" Internet address, and not just a 10.0.xxx.yyy "strictly-local" Address, such as Manually  10.0.1.201 (just beyond the range you are using for your Macs). Do not set anything to 10.0.1.254 -- that is reserved for Broadcast your local network.
The way it is set now, I can ping that Admin address from across the Internet. It is showing about a 75 msec answer time at this writing, and no lost packets.
In the 2.4GHz band, there are at most three clear channels at higher speeds (where the channels were originally created for older 11Mbits/sec.) You are showing at least six other Routers in range. Using the 2.4GHz range means you are trying to shout over those other Networks. This will work for a while, but when they are active, you will slow way down.
Slowing down appears to be what is showing with your updated Option-WiFi screenshot. Your signal strength is still very good, but your Transmit rate had to be reduced from 130 to 104 due to inability to send without errors at highest speeds. You may still be getting errors, which would cause re-transmissions and slow your speed test results, but may not be so slow that the Transmit speed would downshift again (yet).
As an experiment, try running your Router at 5GHz n-mode only. Use it for a while that way. Maybe even run the speed Test. Then capture that Option-Wi-Fi data again and post it here. I would expect it to show a consistent higher speed (like 300), and not give you other problems. But if it cannot attain a higher speed, that may indicate a Hardware Problem.
I do not understand why your Mac does not move to the 5GHz band automatically.

  • Internet downlaod speed slow...

    Hi,
Is there a reason why my desktop pc has a faster internet connection speed than my mac? When I test my speeds on 2wire.com, the PC clocks at 345 kbps through internet explorer (winxp pro) and the mac at 165 kbps through safari, and firefox browsers. I tested them first with my internet cat5 plug into each computer separately, and then both hooked up to my linksys router, testing at separate intervals with one powered off while the other tests. Even my wife's Dell laptop wireless connection clocks faster 20 feet away. The PC has a PCI ethernet adapter, and for the mac, i use the internal 100 base tx it came with. I don't know much about this, so if I am leaving something out here please let me know what I should be asking..
    Thanks!

I too, have a similar problem. My problem is with upload speed. I have a 1.9 Mbps Download and 384 Mbps minimum upload DSL connection. When using SBC's (AT&T) speedtest, My actual download speeds are 1.5-1.7 Mbps. But, my G5 2 GHz dual w/1.5 Gb RAM, consistently gets less than 200 Mbps (usually in the 150 Mbps range) upload speed. In addition, I have four G3 PowerMacs (one of which is a Pismo Powerbook connected via Airport) and a HP running Windows XP that all get at least 400 Mbps upload speed. All of these computers are connected on my network and share the same DSL Modem.
Can anyone tell me why the G5 gets slower uploads than any of the other computers on my network?

  • Download speed slow on Mac Pro but fast on MacBook Pro

I have an early 2008 8-core Mac pro, 6 GB RAM, running 10.6.8. I'm connected via ethernet to the HITRON CGN3 modem/WiFi router from Rogers. I'm only getting about 20Mbps download, and 10 Mbps upload. However, when I connect my 13" 2011 MacBook Pro (8 GB RAM) to the modem, also running 10.6.8 and using ethernet into the same port, I get about 80Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. Even using WiFi, my MacBook Pro is able to get about 80Mbps download.
My network settings are the same in both my Mac Pro and my MacBook Pro. I should be getting around 60-80Mbps download on my internet plan, but my Mac Pro is underperforming.
Anyone know the solution, or have experienced a similar issue?
    Thanks in advance.

Grant, you sir are a mega genius.
The culprit was the ethernet cable. I plugged the cable I was using for the Mac Pro into my MacBook and experienced a drop in download speed. Upon inspection, the cable had 6 wires. Who knew? This cable worked with my previous modem, and my speeds were pretty good. I just upgraded my internet package, and got this new modem, so I guess the cable is no longer incompatible.
Now that I've replaced the ethernet cable to my Mac Pro, my download speeds are smokin'.
Thanks, man, you saved the day!

I've recently purchased a new macbook retina 2014 13". What I've noticed is that the download speed is extremely slow, I get 500 kb/s, this is really slow for me and I actually bought this laptop for downloading and watching movies ... I've done a speedtest and it tells me

  • 38mbs download speed, slow browsing bur fast downl...

    Hi,
I currently get 38meg download speed from BT however my general browsing is not very fast at all. In fact standard broadband I have about 6 months ago was faster!!
My actual downloads are very fast I am happy with that but its the browsing nternet that is really getting frustrating.
I phoned BT and they checked all the settings of the router and checked the line etc and reported no problems but my problems still persist.
MY laptop has 6gb ram and a dual processor, there has never been any problems before in fact its the same laptop when I had standard broadband which ran fine. I use Google chrome too for browsing and run regular virus scans with BT net prtector (or whatever its called)
Anybody have any idea why this may be, as at present I think I am going to cancel my contract in light of the price increase all beacause of this and go else where?
