Internet sharing: connected but no data

Using MB Air 10.6.8 as host to share a USB Mobile Modem Internet connection.
Connected a MB 10.7 as client via Airport to use the shared, working USB connection of the host.
When making the network diagnosis on the client every light is "green", but no data is transferred from the web, the Safari screens remain empty.
Its not the first time that I am making a internet sharing setup, but first time unsuccessfully.
Any hint is appreciated

For what it's worth, I'm having the exact same problem. I have been using the same setup for almost two years, Mini with Internet Sharing turned on, sharing over wifi, but suddenly this morning it just stopped working. Full bars on all devices (iPad's, iPhone's, etc.), but no Internet connection. I have tried restarting, resetting, etc., but nothing works. Not a happy camper right now.

  • Keeping Internet Sharing connections off Bonjour subnet

    Hi,
I have my Mac Mini connected to my home lan via ethernet. I have set its Airport for Internet Sharing. Despite connections to the Airport being on a different subnet than my lan, any device using that Internet Sharing connected can "see" and access any Bonjour services (like Screen Sharing or AFP for example) on the lan.
Now I understand that those Internet Sharing connections connect to the router via NAT provided through my Airport on the Mini. But what I'd like to do is use ipfw or whatever to prevent the Internet Sharing subnet from accessing any IP on the lan with the exception of the router itself. With iptables I could probably figure this out (or get close), but I am not familiar with ipfw. Can anyone help me with setting up ipfw to do this?
    Thanks,
    Doug

I'm no expert but usually the router lets you share one ip address (assigned by your ISP) between several computers on an internal network and the computers can each connect via the router - they don't need to connect to each other. For example, I've got a set up with two computers (one is mine, one is my parents') and two airport base stations. One of the base stations acts as a router (the other just boosts the range so the signal is stronger upstairs) and it distributes internal ips between the other base station and the two computers. We share the internet connexion but neither computer is set up to share its own internet connexion.
So if you're asking what I think you're asking, I don't think you need to enable internet connexion sharing at all - you could just have the computers connect via the router. The only reason I can think not to do this would be if maybe the router doesn't allow wireless connexions and you needed to connect one of the computers using this method. Otherwise, I'd think you'd just connect both through the router.
If that doesn't help, it is probably because I have no idea what I'm talking about - or, rather, very little idea which is worse because it means sometimes I think I understand something a little bit!

Firefox works fine on Windows 2000 SP4 for me.
Any chance you have a dial-up connection that uses a web accelerator to speed the loading of content?

  • Internet not connected - but AirPort is

My Airport, Airport Settings, and ISP are all green in my Network Diagonstics, but my Newtwork Settings is yellow and my Internet and Sever are red. It says in my Network that I have a Self-Assigned IP and "will not be able to connect to the Internet" I've tried EVERYTHING to make my internet work, I've tried deleting my Network's password in my Keychain Access, changing the DHCP to my iPhone's Network IPv4 (it works on my iPhone fine), putting in 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 into the DNS, deleting any proxies, restarting my computer after turning my Airport off and then restarting my compurt after turning it on, restarting my router, deleting the files com.apple.airport.preferences.plist, com.apple.network.identification.plist, and NeworkInterfaces.plist, turning my firewall off to accept all incoming connections, trying the "Assist Me..." and "Dianostics...", trying "Repair Disk Permissions' through the Disk Utility, turning on Internet Sharing then turning it off.
I can't think of anything else to do. PLEASE help me. (Also, this has happened to me before and doing the keychain access thing DID work, but it won't this time)
(And I accidently posted this in the Desktop threads, sorry!)

Head to Network and on Locations > Edit Location and add a new one. "+"
BTW adding Googles DNS into it isn't going to help and depending where the DNS server is (like far way from your ISP server) could make your Akamai based downloads (from Apple) much slower.
The New Location should clear everything, now just set your Wifi to conenct in the upper right hand corner and save into KeyChain when it asks.
If you have a modem your going to need to power it off/on to get a new DCHP lease from the ISP.
Check your date and time in System Preference is correct and updating via Apple's time server for your area or your DCHP lease will fail.

  • Rp-pppoe connected but no data transfer

    hi,
i installed arch on 27th . Post installation i setup internet connection using rp-pppoe, which was a straight forward setup. I also got connected to net and downloaded data upon a system upgrade. Except this one instance, thereafter last two days if connected i am getting no data transfer after a connection is established.
Upon ping of 8.8.8.8  i am getting this error of destination net unreachable & if you ping google.com i get the error unknown host.
when i checked the pppoe status i get this message:
link is up and running on interface ppp0 and no packet errors both RX and TX.
The system upgrade did not happen on 27th due to the TZselec tconflicting files error.
    It is a fresh system.
i am pasting below the lines from the messages.log of 27th when i got the data transfer happened for the first time and next of 29th with the same system but nothing happening except i am connected.

Now in both the cases i got connected but as i said before except twice on  27th i am not able to have data transfer of any type either through ping or pacman upgrade.
Upon the same time i cross checked on my other systems, ubuntu and windows and i had no problems with the same, to confirm any issue with my isp. As of now i am typing one of those systems only.
I have googled a lot, read the other options of pppd, etc, but upon similar queries by other users found no viable solution to this problem.
My hostname is also proper in the config files. I also once used static ip for a change to see if things go working
but nothing is sucessful so far.
The only viable solution i read so far upon google search where there was a success was a fresh installation of arch by an user and he got the same working. But definitely i wont go with that. As i said above i got connected twice on the day of the installation and post that also i am now getting connected but with no data transfer.
Pls suggest what to do to get the connection working.
    regards

Upon a search on the forums yesterday
i read one user query on this forums who was advised the same and he had the same problem like me and it did not got solved with either methodds.
Last his query was still open. I did not save that link.
So i did not give that method a try so far, waiting for a solution for this method without going for new developments thinking a search for a day or two might get some viable results.
i guess you are mentioning the topic of this link
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pppd [This article explains how to set up a point-ti-point connections using pppd and the kernel PPPoE driver. ]
Further in my case the connection is happening and also getting disconnected. You can very well see the same in the  log file which i pasted.
    Jun 27 13:16:48 localhost pppd[888]: Connect time 18.8 minutes.
    Jun 27 13:16:48 localhost pppd[888]: Sent 411268 bytes, received 16885685 bytes.
    Jun 29 18:04:04 localhost pppd[811]: Connect time 9.3 minutes.
    Jun 29 18:04:04 localhost pppd[811]: Sent 0 bytes, received 926 bytes.
So same thing but different results on 2 different days. So what the problem really is i dont understand. Infact what the problem is the system is also not giving out, except that a connection happens, no data transfer takes place and the connection is cut and the stats are also show. Just diving to implement some new method or a reinstall, without resolving this which looks sensible yet senseless too, simply does not appeal here. If really there is some bug or issue with that rp-pppoe package then there is some point to jump to another method.
This must be solvable some way or other.

  • Internet sharing works but the DNS part doesn't

I'm posting this message because I believe it is a bit different from other 'Lion internet sharing' posts in terms of the source of sharing and also the results I get.
Similar to other users experiencing the same problem, my internet sharing setup stopped working as expected after upgrading to Lion. However, I can't say it stopped working completely. It still does work but the DNS part doesn't. This means I can still perform pings, ssh and socket connections from computers using the shared connection. But I cannot browse the internet because web site names can't be resolved.
For example, my MacPro has two Ethernet interfaces. On one of them (en0) I vpn when connecting to work using a VPN service I created via System Preferences => Network. I used to share that VPN connection to computers using the 2nd one (en1). The other computers are linked to (en1) through a multiport hub. This setup used to work flawlessly in Snow Leopard and multiple users could use the shared vpn internet connection.
After the upgrade to Lion I can still see other computers on the local network and also ping any external internet site. I can even use Safari and navigate my ISP's home page using its IP address only. However, DNS doesn't work and internet domains cannot be resolved by name so internet browsing is not possible.
Furthermore, when I don't VPN to work but simply share the connection to the internet from (en0) to computers using (en1) everything works as it used to in Snow Leopard. The difference here is that the same DNS servers are used by both network services.
So far I'm stuck with these findings and I don't know where else to look for answers. Any input or feedback is greatly appreciated.

I've to admit that i don't even know what VPN means.. but..
I have an 27" iMac (mid 2010), a iPhone 4 and a Macbook Pro 13" (mid 2009) .. and i used to share my ethernet connection to wi-fi on Snow Leopard. Since i upgraded to Lion (i'm using it since the first DP, and i think the internet sharing was working under the 1st DP .. i'm not pretty sure), it just doesn't work.
Just like solongpc, it does activate the internet sharing, my other devices can see and connect but neither of then (my iMac - host or my mbp and iphone) can navigate on the internet. And when i turn off my internet sharing (on my iMac), it still not acessing any website.. and i've to restart my moden.

  • Internet not connected - but AiPort is

My Airport, airport Settins, and ISP are all green in my Newtork Diagonstics, but my Newtwork Settings is yellow and my Internet and Sever are red. (Also, this has happened to me before and doing the keychain access thing DID work, but it won't this time)

a Self-Assigned IP and "will not be able to connect to the Internet"
That is a failure to connect to the Router using your current settings. Everyone uses a self-assigned IP Address (for a moment when they first start up) but it is quickly replaced by a good local IP Address once you contact the Router and get a good local IP Address using DHCP.
    System preferences > Network > WiFi/Airport
use the ( Asssist me ) button, but choose ( Assistant ) to set up again from scratch, using a new name for "Location" (not "Automatic"). Be sure to  close the window and Save Changes when you are done setting up.

  • Internet appears connected but pages fail to load after 3-5 minutes!  HELP!

I purchased my Macbook three weeks ago and it immediately found my network and connected. A few days later my computer failed to load internet pages (both in firefox and safari). The connection would not disconnect, or seem to slow. I diagnosed and found no problems. To get it to work for small amounts of time I turn off airport and then turn it back on and get a few minutes before I get "Problem Loading Page".
I have updated the firmware in my router. I use a D-Link Router WBR-1310 and a D-Link Cable Modem DCM-202. I have called my cable provider, Comcast, and they tested the connection saying it was strong. I connected directly to the modem and it never failed to stop loading pages the full 20 minutes I was connected.
My computer has no problem connecting to other connections: The Library, neighbors, my parents' home. There are no time outs and it automatically connects through Airport, no problem.
I have called D-Link about the router. They're a bit confusing in troubleshooting the problem. They told me to connect my Ethernet cable to the computer and manually put in IP address, subnet mask, router address, and name server address. First, I don't know where to find any of that except for the IP address. Secondly, do they expect me to connect and leave the ethernet cable in my computer?
Have there been any problems with Macs and this router? What am I doing wrong and has D-Link given me good steps to take? My experience with them hasn't been so great so I'm skeptical. All of this is very upsetting, I can't enjoy my new Macbook at home.

Yes I had read about this. The point is, especially with something such as wireless, it has to inter-operate with everyone else out there. You would think Apple would do some testing before going to some "recommended" standard that obviously is not widely used in the real world. To someone who just bought a new MacBook, it doesn't matter that Apple is using the "new" recommended way. They just want to be able to connect everywhere they go.
No, networking is a world of standards and recommended procedures. This all used to be a lot easier when there were actual engineers who understood the RFCs running most networks.
You seem to think Apple just throws software over the wall. If that's true, you should swing by Cupertino some time and see if you can meet with a member of their software test groups; I'm sure they'd love to know that you think they don't do anything.
Or perhaps Apple is supposed to test their software with every ISP on the planet first.
And how many people posting in these forums have said when they turn Airport off and back on, then things work again for a while. If the issues are on the other side, why would that make any difference?
Did I or anyone else here say that changing to OpenDNS' servers would solve every issue with every person in each and every one of these threads?
But there have been many cases where switching to OpenDNS' servers does solve people's network delay issues. Hmmm, I guess Apple's cluelessness doesn't apply in those cases.
Come on. He connected directly to the modem and was loading Web pages for 20 minutes without any problem. He goes back to using Airport and the problem reappears. And you think it's reasonable to assume it was just a coincidence that the supposed DNS issue went away while he was connected to the modem and reappeared when he went back to Airport?
It depends now, doesn't it, as I just said.
Perhaps he tried "surfing to a few sites" while connected directly, and when that worked he went back to AirPort. Did he try going to the same sites? Different ones? We don't know.
In fact, even if he did visit the same sites, that wouldn't tell us anything either way as the DNS resolutions for those sites would have been cached when he was connected to the wired network.
This is the same thing that has happened to me since upgrading to Leopard. My wireless started going bad after some minutes of accessing Web sites. If I rebooted the machine, it would be fine again for a while. I finally just turned Airport off and plugged in an Ethernet cable. I have not had any trouble with accessing Web sites since - same ISP (Comcast), same DNS servers.
Tell me there is no Airport issue.
I never said there weren't issues. No one did. Except you implied I did.
Your approach to troubleshooting seems to be "Ah, Apple's software is broken, why bother."
    1) There are many people whose problems have been solved by switching to OpenDNS' servers. That's fact.
    2) There are many ISPs who have broken DNS servers. That's also fact.
    3) Comcast has a variety of DNS servers spread across the country, so your results in Colorado may differ from those of a Comcast subscriber in a different state. Fact again.
    4) You asked for reasons, I gave them, you don't like them. Obviously I must be an Apple shill. Funny, I'll have to ask why I haven't received a paycheck from Cupertino. Ever.
I understand your frustrations if AirPort isn't working for you, but don't turn around and drop into troubleshooting threads and tell people why suggestions we're making can't possibly address their issues just because they haven't solved your particular issue.
That would be just as silly as me assuming that because I haven't seen an AirPort drop since 2007, all of those posting in threads here are simply delusional or incompetent.
The only way to find out what's wrong in each case is to be methodical, and step one in diagnosing network delays is to see if DNS is at fault.
If it is, great, problem solved. If not, on to step two of a nearly infinite sequence.
    One step at a time.

  • Connected, but no data entry in table

Everything works fine on my live site, but using my local testing server I am unable to get data into my mySQL table based on a simple form. Configurations and code have been changed in both locations, and there is a connection to localhost. Are there Dreamweaver or PHP settings that might be causing this? Thanks for your help.

Have you installed MySQL and phpMyInfo on your system? Have you created the database on your local server? Can you edit the tables in your database using the Mysql control panel.  If the answer to these questions is yes, then perhaps a sample of your code might give an idea of what is happening?

  • Ipod internet not connecting but shows a wi-fi connection

Hey guys, my ipod touch has been fine up until now. My ipod shows positive connection to the internet, but it cannot connect because "the server cannot be found." Someone please help me. Thank you.

Tap the blue > next to your network name. What are your IP settings showing?
If everything looks normal, ie. 192.168.x.x for your IP address and the routers IP address, you might have a DNS problem. This kind of depends on how well your internet connection is and if you have any problems with your computer getting to web sites.
If you are getting a 169.x.x.x address, then your touch is not getting an IP address from the router. This might depend on your router settings or it might be related to your touch. You can try tapping "Renew Lease" of turning WiFi off and back on. You may even want to power cycle your router if the two previous steps don't help.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Open DNS and internet sharing

I am seeing strange behavior, and wondering if anyone has a thought about what is going on.
I am at a hotel with fast internet service over ethernet, but, for whatever reason, DNS seems very slow if I use DHCP to connect (timeouts of 5-10 secs to get to a new site). If I switch to DHCP with fixed DNS, and use the Open DNS servers (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220) the latency issues go away.
The interesting thing is that I am sharing the internet connection over Airport to my wife's computer (she connecting thru DHCP). If I use a fixed DNS for MY computer, then her computer cannot connect thru internet sharing. But if I use the (slow) DHCP connection, then she can connect through mine. I have not tried setting up her computer with a fixed DNS, as she really doesn't like me to change settings on her computer
Is this a known limitation of internet sharing, or is there something I should know?
    TIA

In more detail, if my ethernet (the computer that is doing the sharing), is set up with Configure: Using DHCP, and DNS Server: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220 (in Network Panel for Ethernet), then the computer connecting thru Internet Sharing in Sharing Panel is not able to access some or all resources thru http (ie, pages fail to load, or do not fully load).
However, if I clear the DNS Server part in the Network Panel, thereby using the the DNS Servers supplied by the hotel, then my computer's connection to the internet is slower, with long waits (presumably due to a slow DNS server), but computers accessing the internet via Airport thru my shared connection are able to browse the internet successfully.
I suspect that when I have a fixed DNS server in my computer, that fact is not broadcast to computers using the shared connection. But I am not an expert in TCP/IP, and may well be confused about how DHCP, DNS, and Apple's Internet Sharing work together.
Thanks for any ideas you have

  • Repeating a keyframe

I need to make a layer's opacity flicker on and off.  If I were doing this in LightWave 3D I would set a frame to 100%, then the next frame to 0% and set the 2nd frames post behavior to "repeat".  Is there a way to do this in AfterFX?  Thanks.
