Internet speed impacted when router connected

I have been keeping a constant check on our internet speed, primarily because our Bell Sympatico service peaks and troughs .. my speed without the router is 5600kbps .. when I connect the router however my speed drops to 2,200 .. why is that .... and can it be fixed .. because before I switched to this router, I had a d-link which recorded the same speed with or without the router connected.
I've been giving Bell grief and have a service ticket out, which I may not need it seem to be the router ?
Router is the WRT320N

1)  When you said your speed drops to 2200 kbps, I assume you mean your speed when your computer is wired to the router  -- is that correct?
2)  And I assume by "kbps", you do mean "kilobits per second", not "kilobytes per second"  --  is that correct?
3)  If the answer to both 1 and 2 is yes, then the first thing to do is simply reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
4)  There are several other things that can give you slow speed when wired to the router including:
a)  using point-to-point (P2P) software.  This is a known cause for router slow downs and disconnections.  It can cause problems for several days after use.  Stop the P2P.
b)  unnecessarily adding a "Domain name" to your router.  If your ISP does not require a domain name, erase the domain name from your router.
c)  turning on "logging" in the router.  Logging is only for diagnostic purposes, otherwise, turn logging off.
d)  Sometimes Linksys routers seem to have trouble synching to some very old modems.  The solution is to get a new modem.
e)  Some computers will slow if you are using a wired and a wireless connection at the same time.  Turn off your wireless adapter.
f)   Improper setup of modem and/or router  ---  to fix this, we will need more info:
5)  Please state your ISP
6)  Please state the make and exact model number of your modem (not the WRT320N).
7)  Please do the following test:
Power down your entire network.  Using an ethernet cable, connect your modem directly to your computer.  (Do not use the WRT320N for this test.)  Power up the modem and computer.  Verify that you have a working Internet connection, then proceed with the following:  (Even if your Internet connection does not work, state this, and proceed.)
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key.   Copy all the results to your next post.  To do the copy, highlight the results, then use the copy (Ctrl-c) keys and the paste (Ctrl-v) keys.  If your "IP address" does not start with 192.168 , then for security reasons, erase the last half of your IP address.

  • Slow Internet Speed on Linksys router

I have an ibook that I use for work and when I am at work the inter speed is just fine (we're on an Airport). When I take it home and try to get on the net it is very slow. The crazy thing is, we have an Imac at home and connect via wreless to it and have no problems what so ever. Have any suggestions?

Mass market routers like Linksys are not very efficient with high speed broadband. I really don't think there's much you can do to improve the Linksys performance.
Just to be sure its the router you might want to check your cable modem signal strength; and the connectors from the street to your cable modem. Sometimes a bad splitter can cause very bad signal strength. You might want to test your speed by hooking up your iBook directly to the cable modem without a router. Run a speed test from somewhere like http://speakeasy.net. Be sure to pick a test location close to your home. If you get really fast speeds without the router than with the router then you know its the Linksys.
I had similar problems with Linksys. I upgraded it with the dd-wrt firmware. This improved reliability but not performance. You might want to buy a ZyXEL router which is very fast and very efficient. Also, its much more reliable than your Linksys router.

  • Internet speed issues when macbook pro joins Airport Network

I have an apple tv, two iphones, a PC and a macbook sharing a Airport Extreme internet connection.
The problem is that all devices are working on full internet speed until i connect my macbook pro late 2009.
Normaly i have a download speed at 650kb/s but when the macbook connects to the Airport extreme the internet speed is jumping between 20kb/s and 200kb/s
The unusual thing are the jumps and drops of the speed.
When i shut down the Macbook all other devices are running on normal internet speed and the internet connection is not jumping anymore.
What the **** is going on?

SOLUTION FOUND to MacBook Pro poor Wi-Fi wireless signal.
First, let's talk about the actual problem: too much signal noise. There is a hidden app in OSX called "Wi-Fi Diagnostics" This will tell you everything you need to know why your Wi-Fi is not working!
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5606
HINT: It is included in 10.7, just look for it.
    The solution!
Turn off your wi-fi and run your internet through your home's electrical wires. Power-line adapters are devices that turn a home's electrical wiring into network cables for a computer network.

I purchased TP-LINK TL-PA511 and for the first time I'm downloading with ALL my internet speed (30mb down / 5mb up) tested via www.speedtest.net. I'M SOOOOO HAPPY!!!!

  • I am connected to a time capsule both wirelessly and through ethernet...and state of the time capsule is solid green...the internet however doesn't work...The internet works fine when directly connected to my macbook pro but it won't work through the tc

I have deleted time machine preferences...restarted the modem a bunch of times, restored time capsule to it's original settings...after I first set it up in Airport Ulitity its shows a page quickly that states there is a internet problem, but the page quickly goes away before I can read what it says exaclty and states the internet connection problem is resolved...
However it's not resolved, I'm also having trouble doing a back up to my time capsule...I recently purchased a new macbook and retrieved/restore what was on the time capsule to the new computer...that worked fine...wireless worked fine...however when I tried to back up the new macbook...it would faii stating that there isn't enough room on the TC to do a back up...
I didn't end up keeping the new macbook, I was just using it/trying it out while my current macbook pro was being repaired (logic board)
Ever since I got my current macbook back from repair...my backups have failed due to their not being enough space to perform the back up...in the past the back ups would happen and old back ups would be replaced...
I think this has to do with my current computer having a new name after the repair..."Adam's macbook pro 2" vs "Adam's macbook pro"
The internet was working fine wirelessly through the TC a day ago, but it wasn't allowing my other laptop that was connected via ethernet access to the internet...I had a self assigned IP address error then...I don't have that problem now, but it's not transmitting internet at all...even though it's in a solid green state.
I have no problem completely wiping out my TC including the previous back ups on it...just don't know how to go about it...I have restored it to factory settings a bunch of times and created the network from scratch...just hasn't fixed the issue
Is there more prefences files I should delete

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

  • My macbook won't connect to the internet even though my router/connection is fine

Two days ago my computer was fine. Since yesterday it won't connect to the internet. I've been in touch with my service provider and determined that my router is fine and everything is correctly connected. I've rebooted my modem, restarted my computer, taken dhcp offline and put it back on, repaired disk permissions... Not necessarily in that order but nothing had work. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We've determined, then, that you use your cable rather than wifi for your signal. Approach this in an organized way:
    1. ISP. Check your ISP's webmail to make sure you can send and mail email using the webmail interface. If you can, that means your ISP can still send and receive emails - if only on webmail. Useful if your normal email is malfuctioning, like now.
    2. Modem. Unplug and reconnect your modem, and make sure the connection is snug.
    3. Cables. Make sure all of your cables and plugs are connected; it's easy to disconnect an ethernet cable while cleaning, or after random kicking.
    4. Connection wizard. Go to Mail/Window/Connection Doctor, and take down the results.
Most of the time, you can trace the problem after following these steps. If there's still no luck, provide detailed info on your results.

  • Will signal strength or internet speed suffer when using a Generation 1 Time Capsule and wireless extending a network with a Generation 5 Airport Extreme

I have a wireless network in my home and I have a Time Capsule 1st generation and a Airport Extreme 5th Generation, will this cause my internet to be slow or have glitches with signal strength?

We've gone over this in the other thread.
If the Time Capsule will be connecting using wireless only, everything depends on the quality of the connection between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule.
The quality of the connection will be affected by the distance that the Time Capsule is located from the AirPort Extreme and any obstructions in the signal path.
If you have a ceiling between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule, then you should expect the signal arriving at the Time Capsule to have lost 30-40% of its bandwidth (speed). So, the Time Capsule can only repeat the weaker signal that it receives.
Other walls or other obstructions like heavy furniture, large mirrors, etc will also affect the wireless signal as well as cordless phones and other wireless networks around you.
If you are lucky enough to have line-of-sight between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule, then the wireless connection between those devices can work quite well. Few of us have this luxury, and must settle for significant compromises in performance.
If the wireless connection between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule does the job for you reliably, then you can leave things as is.  If you are not getting the reliable performance that you need, then you will need to establish a wired Ethernet connection between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule.
As you might imagine, there is virtually no signal loss in a wire, even up to 300+ feet or 100 meters.

  • How Can I Regulate Internet Speed Thru The Router

I have a E3000 router and I want to slow the upload and download speed to my Xbox is there any way to do this thru the router settings. I have internet that is about 20-30mbps down and 2-3mbps up I want to slow it to about 5-6mbps down and 1-2 mbps up.

You can set the priority level of your Xbox. Here are the steps:
    Open the web interface,
Go the Applications and Gaming> QoS
Enable Internet Access Priority, under Category select Ethernet(for wired) or MAC add (if it's wireless)
    Set your preferred priority level.
Setting up QoS on a Linksys Wireless-N router

  • Getting slow wifi speeds on wireless router connected to the same LAN

I have a main router/firewall with two wireless routers(linksys E2500 and TP link) connected to it.I want to configure them to all be on the same LAN (192.168.19.0) so i experimented with the TP link first by removing the ethernet cable from the WAN port and inserting it in the LAN port then I disabled DHCP and it worked perfectly. The only downside is that i am getting slower speeds on the TP link compared to the linksys which is still on the 192.168.1.0 network.Ethernet also works fine though i've observed that the TPlink name displays on the ethernet NIC. Can the speed be increased one way or the other or i have to change my setup?

  • Will the iPad Mini or Air allow me to insert a pre-paid Internet mini chip when not connected to WiFi

I have a pre-paid Internet chip for my current tablet (not Apple). I use this when I am travelling. I do not want to go onto a plan

yes, if you had a micro sim and had got some data plans in it, then go head---your ipad can use the cellular internet.

  • The 3G on my iPhone is not working, the only way the internet works is when its connected through wifi. What do I do?

I've tried turning my Phone on and off but the 3G still doesn't work.

The last two steps of user troubleshooting are restore from a backup and restore as new. If after a restore as new the device still is not operating correctly, then the next thing would be an appointment with the Genius Bar at Apple.
However, if it was me, before I tried all of this, I would contact my carrier, have them check my account and if necessary, replace the SIM card before I went to Apple. They supply the connection and the data.

  • Slow internet speeds and dropping connection

hello, I am making this post on behalf of my dad, for a good few months (5-6 maybe even longer) we have been experiencing slow internet speeds and a dropping connection when ever the phone is picked up. when an incoming call is answered some or all devices connected to the internet drop out for a second then come back online, the connection does not completly disapear but causes any voice chat, streaming or gaming to disconect. We have BT wireless phones (not sure what exact type) which we have had for a few years. they are connected through an ADSL filter which as far i can remember has been there for years. We have a netgear DG834GT router which has also been there for a few years. I went onto its settings and got this information, not sure if its usefull or not.
    System Up Time 42:18:47
    ADSL Link
    Downstream
    Upstream
    Connection Speed
    1760 kbps
    448 kbps
    Line Attenuation
    61.0 db
    31.5 db
    Noise Margin
    13.1 db
    13.0 db
I also got this from the BTW speed tester
    1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
    Download  Speed
    1.24 Mbps
    0 Mbps
    2 Mbps
    Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 1.24 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.4 Mbps-2 Mbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :1.76 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1.25 Mbps
I hope this is enough information to figure out what is going on with it.

put everything back as it was and this is what it looks like now:
    ADSL Link
    Downstream
    Upstream
    Connection Speed
    160 kbps
    448 kbps
    Line Attenuation
    61.5 db
    31.5 db
    Noise Margin
    19.9 db
    12.0 db
also while i was doing that i did i quiet line test and both myself and my brother listened to it and agreed that there was buzzing/static

  • Slow Internet Speed out of NO WHERE

Well I have a decent Internet Speed... Until about a week ago I started noticing that my downloads were going at a 30-60kb/s speed when normally they go at 80-100kb/s (Hey, if I was an adult, I'd been buy way faster Internet, but come on, I'm only 14). So yeah I don't know if its something with my settings or Verizon is just down for a while... but yeah I'm going to try my Internet with out my router connected and see how that goes...because it might be something in the router's settings.

you really shouldn't use the internet without a router between you and the modem...   your just asking to get a virus....
its likely that you have spyware/adware due to the porn sites you've been visiting...
download and run "adaware" and remove any infections...
you might also run "hijack this" it will tell you anything that is having any effect on your computer...   if you post a read out of the hijack this results, i can tell you what you should remove...

  • E4200 Internet Speed Test

I have slow internet speed with certain websites so I tried running a internet speed test with Cisco Connect version 3 with my E4200 router.   It did not run, but responded with a "website not found" message.  How can I correct this?  Is this an indication that something else is wrong?

Hi! Do you have an updated firmware on that router? Based on my readings, firmware version 1.0.02 (build 13) supports IPV6. Higher than that is much better. You may check for the latest firmware from this link, http://support.linksys.com/en-us/support/routers/E4200
