Iomega external HDD - Should you eject them or just switch macbook off?

Greetings
I have an Iomega eGo HDD (Mac Edition) which I connect to my macbook via Firewire 400 and backup using Time Machine. It doesn't have a power switch on the HDD. When I want to switch my macbook off should I right-click on the Iomega icon on the desktop and click on Eject "Iomega_HDD" and then unplug the firewire cable and power the macbook off? Or can I just turn the power off on the macbook and leave the HDD connected?
Any help appreciated as the online support for the HDD doesn't mention this? I know the mac sometimes gives error messages if you disconnect devices without exiting them properly, so I just want to make sure I'm doing it right and not damaging the HDD. Can anyone help please?

You can just shut down the computer (as long as the HDD stays plugged in till it's done shutting off). Finder will automatically eject all disks before shutting down.
Just make sure to eject if you're unplugging, that's all!

  • My Iomega external HDD can no longer be read by my Macbook Pro *Please Help*

The day before my problem began my external was working fine then the next day I plugged it into my mac and now it can't be read. I get a message that says it can't be read with the options to eject, ignore, and initialize. When I click initialize it sends me to disk utility where I see the HDD but it doesn't say Iomega like it usually does instead it says External Raid Media. To make things worse it says it's not partitioned. I can't even verify or repair disk because the options are greyed out. I tried restarting, opening it up to see if it was a physical problem. I don't know what to do any assistance will be appreciated.

Do a reset.. power off the TC..
Hold in reset and power on.. keep holding in reset until it flashes rapidly.. if it turns on at all.
If you bought it in June.. take it back today.. it is broken.. at a guess.
Some Gen4 are failing this way.. get Apple to replace it.. even if it is a few days out of warranty it won't be much.

  • Help please: iOmega external HDD not mounting

    Hello,
I hope someone can help me 1) solve this problem and 2) give me some tips on how to avoid if it was self induced.
My iOmega external HDD won't automatically mount. It does not display in Disk Profiler. In System Profiler I can see an unknown Firewire device which I believe is it. It has data on it currently so I'd prefer not to have to format it! I tried searching some other threads but they tend to be very specific.
    Thanks!

Hi, za_. Is this a bus-powered portable USB2 drive? If so, it probably demands a little more power than the port it's connected to can provide. In that case, the problem can be resolved by supplying power to it from (a) an auxiliary power cable that draws additional power from your Powerbook's second USB port, or (b) its own AC adapter, if it came with one, or if one is available as an option for it. If the drive enclosure has no port on it for an auxiliary power input, then (c) you'll have to interpose an AC-powered USB hub between the computer and the drive. Option A is the best, because it isn't bulky and preserves the portability of the drive. Option C is the worst, because it's the bulkiest of the three.
If your drive isn't a 2.5" portable unit, please supply exact details about what model it is and how it's powered, and we'll see about other explanations for the problem.

  • How do you use templates from external hdd? (without copying them over)

When I installed DVD Studio Pro 4, I had to install the Templates, Styles, Transitions, etc... into an external for lack of space in my MBP. Now comes the time when I need to use those templates, so how do I access them without having to reimport them? Importing them copies the template files over from the external to the internal and I can't afford the space.

How did you install them onto an external? If you did it via the FCS installer, then DVDSP should automatically link to them. If you just copied them over, it would probably be easiest to jus reinstall from the original discs, this time telling it to put the additional content on your external.

  • External HDD: Shows not ejected properly when the drive is still present

    Hi,
I have a Seagate 500 GB external HD, the big one with power adapter. I connect to my MBP with a USB cable. Recently, every now and then, I am seeing the message "Your external disk was not ejected properly. Always make sure you eject blah blah..." even when the disk is firmly planted onto the Mac. I can see the disk in my desktop and finder. But keep getting this message nevertheless.
Another observation is - If I have Picasa open, Picasa fails to load the pictures in the external HDD when this happens. Pictures that has been earlier added to Picasa library, that is, which should ideally show up when the HDD is connected.
    Any ideas?

Try a different USB cable. If that doesn't work, go to Seagate's web site and open a tech support request with them. If a new USB cable doesn't help, there is probably a problem with that disk drive such as outdated firmware.

  • What size external HDD do you need for TM?

I have a new 500gb drive in my iMac, do I need a 1TB external HDD for TM to work. I have heard that you need a drive that is twice the space for the TM to work. Thanks for all the help I recieve.

Rather than thinking of it in terms of twice the size of your hard drive, I think it best to think in terms of 2 to 3 times the size of the data you are backing up. If your computer's hard drive is 500GB but you are only using 35GB of it, a 1TB drive is just overkill.

  • I have an old macbook that I'm trying to get photos off of.  When I save them on an external hard drive to move them over, my new macbook can't read the files.

I am thinking about buying iPhoto 9.5.1, but I'm wondering if that will replace my old photo library completely?  Will I lose my photos and will I be able to convert them to my newer macbook pro?  Thank you for your help!

It will not replace your Library. It will need to be updated to run with the newer version, which iPhoto will do automatically when you run it first time. Thereafter you continue to use iPhoto as always.
Of course, before updating anything on a computer back up first

  • Drivers for an old iomega external HDD

I can not get my Macbook Pro running OS X 10.9.4 to recognize a 5 year old external hard drive from iomega. The product code is 31759000 RDHD-U. The hard drive powers up, all cables have been checked to work on other devices, and yet nothing happens when connected.

What interface does your model use? Firewire and USB interfaces are supported in OS X. Drivers should not be needed. SCSI, on the other hand, do require drivers.
Do you know what sort of interface is on the drive itself? You may be able to relocate it into an enclosure that supports USB, Firewire, etc. and also supports the drive's native interface. I'm afraid I'm not too much help here because I have not used an Iomega device in years, and those I used were the bare drives.

  • If you have movies in iPhoto, should you move them to iMovie?

I'm new to Mac so still trying to figure out how things work.
The movies I had on my PC got imported into iphoto..They also seem to appear in IMovie.  Can I delete them from iphoto?  or will that affect imovie?  I dont really want dupes.
Also today I was playing with the Photo Booth app and took a short video and saw there was an app to save it to iphoto but not to imovie?  Is there a way to save it to imovie?  Do I need to save it to iphoto first and then somehow move it to imovie?  Do videos reside in both places?  (I never really got a clear answer from the Apple Store employee).
If I record a video with Photo Booth and send it to someone, will they be able to view it even if they dont use Macs?  Im assuming the answer is yes.
I just am unclear as to where videos go on a Mac - iphoto/imovie/both?  I dont want to delete something from iphoto and then find it disappeared from imovie...And I dont want to create an extra step by saving something to iphoto and then having to movie it to imovie.

First i erase in Iphoto but i notice that still appear in Finder so i erased in finder to , now after a while of time apper again and i can see all the pictures but just in the mini display .. the backup to that photos damage so now that i saw again i want it ... but i can find from where iphoto get the image : (

  • I have a complaint about my mac book pro being slippery. Why do these expensive computers that we as consumers purchase if you set them on a couch slip off no matter where you place them on the couch?

Hi, my Mac Book Pro 15 inch lap top if i set it on the couch no matter where I place it slips off and luckily so far I have caught it before it falls onto the floor and gets ruined, of which I am super afraid of, due to what I initially paid for it as the consumer. Also, the couch is not made of slippery material at all. Also, when using it on my lap while watching tv, and multi tasking while doing my college homework, it even slides off of my lap at times. Why is it called a lap top then when it's not working as one? Are we to wear rubber pants that grip your products? Also, Why do you place on your Apple website that in one area a satin cover is available in the teal color, and then in another area it's discontinued? I believe it would be simpler if Apple would just remove the product all together from the purchasing website once any product becomes discontinued. Also, I was sitting here at home waiting for a reply about the satin cover in teal no longer being available period or that it has shipped, but yet I ended up calling Apple altogether myself and finding this all out that the only available color is the black. It would've been nice to have recieved an e-mail or a phone call on why it wasn't going to be shipped, or shipping instead of having to do customer services job and doing the leg work myself. Also, why is it that no one also even tells a consumer about the classes that were offered to a new consumer for 14 days after purchase of paying the $99.00s to learn about their macs of any kind? If I had known about such a program, I surely would've signed right up for it. Now I am being told that I can only take one clas at a time or something?!? I seriously wish I was told about this as a consumer of the Mac Book Pro 15 inch, because I would've purchased that offer right away, and now I am stuck and can no longer do it. Also I have had my computer since October of last year. So, I am in college as becoming a graphic designer within a degree of an Associates of Science and am now still struggling to learn the computer, and the programs I pruchased as well at the time of purchase, along with an Epson printer, the magic mouse, and the one year warranty. As for this all, I do believe that Apple needs to make a better bottom to the Mac Book Pro's within a much better quality for the price we pay as consumers, and all other lap tops and/or Notebooks in making them slide proof. The tiny rubber spots on the bottom of the lap tops or any Apple computer similar to mine just needs a better quality improvement to us consumers I spent good money on this purchase, I think now I deserve a rubberised protective cover for free for the slipperyness, and also since I was never told about the program for the classes of which a consumer  was to pay $99.00s for, I think as a good paying quality consumer for Apple's products, I now deserve these classes for free as well.
    Sincerely,
    Kim

    Hi shldr2thewheel,
it has been a while since we have last spoke, I would like to let you know, I am still working on getting used to the switch from windows to a Mac/Apple system. I do have a new question for you, I did purchase In Design CS5.5 through journeyed.com through Cuyahoga Community College of which I attend as a student, is there a way to purchase an online book through iTunes to learn that as well? Also, you know me, the struggling student, I would also, when and if the book can be purchased through the iTunes, would need to know if you do know of a much easier book for struggling students like myself and at a reasonable price as well for the In Design CS5.5 program. Our campus bookstore had closed early, and, so did the colleges library and our local library here where I do live, so, I cannot go to either place to purchase a book or to take out a book, plus cash funds are low at this moment as well but, I do have money left on the iTunes account to use, if it can be used. So, can it be used, the iTunes money, towards finding a low priced online book? I am in great need of assistance as I have a project due for my one course for this Tuesday, September 4, 2012.
Sincerely in need of help once again,
    Kim

  • Should I eject when not using extHDD? Or let in plugged?

    Hi,
I am wondering, if I am currently not using my external hdd, should I eject it? Cuz I might be using it later. Or should i just let it plugged in? Will letting it plugged in damage the hdd in anyway? Will ejecting it when not using damaged it in anyway? Please help guys thanks!
    Ala.

If you're not using the external for a while, it's perfectly OK to eject it and turn off it's power.
Leaving it mounted should pose no problems either, unless your mains power supply is a bit iffy, but in that case the Mac is just as vulnerable to power outages or spikes.
PS; don't expect instant responses in this forum - most of the contributors are in a different time zone and probably still asleep when you first posted.

  • How to avoid TM to back up entire external HDD to TC again after eject/reconnect to MacBook Air?

I back up my MacBook Air internal HDD and an additional external HDD plugged into the USB port of the MacBook Air to my Time Capsule using Time Machine. However, if I remove/eject the external HDD and then reconnect it TM tries to backup the entire contents of the external HDD again.
Is this known/expected behaviour, or is there some config trick to avoid this?

TM will back up entire external HDD if it was connected to a different system between ejecting and reconnecting to the MacBook Air.
It shouldn't, unless that system does something really bizarre, like assigning a new UUID to the drive.
That was my thought as well. When an external drive has not been connected during recent backups (potentially 25 or more if a whole day went by), TM may not have as much cached data about changed files, so while it may appear that TM is backing up the entire drive anew, when all data is updated only new data is retained.
Kanitsky, what messages or status are you seeing that sugges the entire external HD is being backed up when reconnected?

  • When I back up to my iomega external drive is this creating a bootable backup?

I recently noticed in disc utility that my HDD was in red and when I click on it I see the text that reads "this drive has a hard ware problem that can't be repaired". This is a replacement hard drive that I had installed just about a year ago. I guess I will be taking it in to get replaced. I am wondering though, are the backups I am doing on my iomega external hdd "bootable" backups? Will I and how will I be able to get this on to my new hard drive?

Your fear was wise! NEVER EVER use the same external HD for redundant backups. It is extremely wise to use both a Bootable Clone and TM backup however they should be on separate EHDs. The reason being is if the HD crashes  you have lost all of your backup. EHD's are very cheap these days so just get yourself another and then use both TM and CCC. This is what I (and many many others) do.
Also here are some articles from MacWorld that discuss different backup strategies. One common thread you will see in each article is using redundant backups.

You are so correct, Marcus, this isn't a question you posed, so there is no "complete" answer, but I wanted to highlight an especially articulate one.  You have generated a very stimulating discussion thread, here, by the way, so thanks.  Anyone answering so fully and well (of course complete is subjective) should be rewarded.  Another way to have that happen, is for a post, which has so much content, to "evolve" into a blog or an article.

  • Mounting partition and external hdds in xmonad

    Hi all,
Recently i ditched DE in favor of tiling windows( XMonad in particular) and now I want to know which is the best file manager for it.
I have thunar installed but it doesn't automatically mount my external hard disks and my partitions.
I am able to do so only if I run
    dbus-launch thunar
some one in irc suggested that doing that is not a good way.
So I want to know filemanager that mounts external hdd and partitions automatically.
    Thanks,

Did you start it? If you did, you should see an icon in your tray/notification icon area (if you have one) and it should automount external disks when you plug them in.
    start as in ?
